Passage1
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a very long history. One important part of it is the four methods doctors use: looking, listening and smelling, asking, and feeling the pulse (脉搏).
Looking means doctors look at patients with great care. They check the face colour. If the face is yellowish, it might mean there’s a problem with the spleen (脾). The tongue is also important. They look at the tongue coating, how thick it is and its colour. For example, a thick, white tongue coating may show there’s too much dampness (湿气) in the body.
Listening and smelling mean two parts. Doctors listen to patients’ voices. Are they weak or strong? They also listen to coughs to see if it’s a dry cough or a cough with phlegm (痰). And they smell patients’ breath and body smell. A bad-smelling breath might mean there are problems with digestion (消化).
Asking means that doctors ask patients lots of questions. They want to know about the symptoms (症状) patients have. They also ask about past illnesses, daily habits like how well they sleep and how often they exercise and what they usually eat. This helps doctors understand the patient’s overall (全面的) health condition.
Feeling is a skill. Doctors feel patients’ pulses. A fast pulse can mean the body is too hot or the patient is stressed. They also feel parts of the body, like the stomach, to see if there’s any pain or strange lumps.
These four diagnostic (诊断的) ways work together. They help doctors find out what illnesses patients have and make good treatment plans. They are a very important part of Chinese medical culture. They show how smart our ancestors were in understanding and treating the human body.

Passage2
Fan Jinshi, born in 1938, is widely known as the “Daughter of Dunhuang”. After graduating from Peking University in 1963, she volunteered to work at the Dunhuang Academy in Gansu Province, despite the extremely harsh living conditions—there was no running water, no electricity, and sandstorms hit the area almost every week.
At first, many people doubted whether a young woman from Beijing could stick to such a tough life. But Fan stayed. Over the past 60 years, she has devoted all her time and energy to protecting and studying the Mogao Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses over 2,000 colored sculptures (雕塑) and 45,000 square meters of ancient murals (壁画).
In the 1980s, Fan noticed that the growing number of tourists was causing damage (损坏) to the fragile murals. She led a team to launch a digital preservation (保护) project, scanning every mural and sculpture to build a complete digital archive (档案). Thanks to her efforts, people can now enjoy the beauty of Dunhuang art online without touching or harming the original works.
In 2019, Fan was awarded the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest state honor. When asked why she spent her whole life in the desert, she simply said, “Dunhuang is not just a historical site—it’s a treasure of Chinese civilization. I just did what I was supposed to do.”

Passage1
Nujiang, Yunnan Province, was once one of China’s poorest areas. Now thousands of people live in better houses, and children study in modern schools. Roads that once took days to travel now take minutes, and the internet reaches homes with no power.
The people of Nujiang still practise their traditions and customs even with great changes in the development of their area. Embroidery (刺绣), weaving (编织) and dance remain part of daily life. This connection between the old and the new is not accidental — it shows an understanding that development does not mean abandoning traditions.
In a Lisu village, it’s very common to see a woman weaving textiles (纺织品). The patterns (图形) and styles show their history and connection to the land. These textiles are a very important part of their traditions, worn during festivals. ▲ They are not old things of the past but living traditions that continue to develop in today’s world.
Tourism has become a main source of income (收入), with visitors attracted to Nujiang by its amazing natural views and lively culture. Local business owners have also found new ways to sell traditional handmade products, creating jobs that both keep their special culture alive and provide income.
As China continues to get modern, it is necessary to protect traditional culture. It means progress doesn’t come at the cost of cultural values. Nujiang offers a clear example. It shows that protecting traditional culture is not just about looking back, but also about building a future that respects the past.

A.By telling stories. B.By describing reasons. C.By comparing differences.

Inkstones are usually made from stone or clay. They have a flat surface for rubbing (磨) the ink and a small hole to hold the ink. Besides its cultural role, the inkstone also carries personal and emotional meaning. It is often given as a thoughtful gift, especially to students or friends who love writing. 4 Many people also collect inkstones as beautiful artworks to keep at home or in the office, because they can bring peace and inspiration to everyday life.
Nowadays, people are finding new ways to keep this tradition alive. Workshops and culture parks are opened to teach young people about inkstones. 5 This helps more young Chinese understand and love their own culture.
