Unit 3 Project 4a–4d
Project and exploration
Name __________________ Class __________ Date __________
Textbook: pp. 30 | Time: 45 minutes
Learning goals
I can compare my past and present with evidence, check a partner’s view, and describe growth without an unfair overall ranking.
Focus: Use the same area and measure when comparing change.
Inquiry question
How can we show growth with evidence?
Before class: spend 10 minutes finding a past piece of work, a dated record or a specific observation. Bring notes; photos are optional. After class: check one small goal for a week.
Compare two meanings 8 min
In this classroom example, each student took 10 basketball shots from the same spot before and after practice. Conditions were the same.
学生 Student
Before
After
Increase
Kai
2 successful shots
6 successful shots
Mei
5 successful shots
8 successful shots
Bo
4 successful shots
6 successful shots
A classmate says, “Mei improved the most because she scored 8.” What does 8 show? Who made the largest increase in successful shots? Does this show the most growth in every area?
Collect your evidence 10 min
Use 4a. Choose two areas: physical growth, confidence, study, sports or another area. Note an earlier and a recent example for each. Without earlier evidence, write “I do not know yet” and plan what to collect.
My two areas and the evidence I brought:
项目探究学案 Project and exploration
Make growth visible
Compare observations 9 min
Use 4b. Tell a partner about a change. Ask what they have noticed and request an example. Check whether you agree. Different observations may come from different situations.
My view
Partner’s example
What I will keep or change
Build a growth chart 12 min
Use 4c. Make a chart for your two areas. Include dates or time periods. Use numbers only if you have them; a dated example can also be evidence.

A small next step
Partner check: Are “then” and “now” about the same skill? Is the evidence strong enough? Mark a claim that needs more evidence.

Share and plan a next step
Share your growth 6 min
Use 4d. In groups of four, give a 45-second talk with your chart. Include a comparison, evidence and a next step. Use “as … as” if it fits the evidence.
Speaking notes
A change I can support, the evidence and what helped:
Listeners ask: “What makes you say that?” Give feedback on evidence and clarity. A decorated chart is not stronger evidence than a plain one.
A question I received and my response:
公平比较 A fair comparison
Discuss “Who changed the most?” only within one agreed area and measure. For different areas, describe each person’s progress. If evidence is missing or not comparable, explain why you cannot decide.
Our conclusion and its limit:
一周后回看 One-week follow-up
My goal
Action and time
How I will check
After one week, add a dated note: What changed? What stayed the same? Which part of the plan needs adjusting?
Project and exploration answers
J1–J5
Distinguish result from improvement J1
Kai: 6 − 2 = 4 more successful shots. Mei: 8 − 5 = 3 more. Bo: 6 − 4 = 2 more. Mei has the highest final score; Kai has the largest increase. The number of shots, place and conditions match, so comparison within this task is fair.
This measure concerns one shooting task. It cannot prove who improved most in every sport or part of life. If learners suggest another measure, ask them to define it clearly. This question specifies the increase in successful shots.
Select and check evidence J2–J3
Useful evidence includes dated work, records from the same practice task or specific observations from two periods. “I am much better now” is not enough. Missing evidence is a reason to begin recording, not to invent a past result.
A partner may see confidence in small groups while a student still finds whole-class speaking hard. Both can be true. A more precise claim: “I speak more confidently in small groups than last term; I am still practising whole-class speaking.”

Reading habit
Then
In September, I gave only a one-word answer in our group.
In the first week of September, my log shows one evening of reading.
Now
In October, I explained a character’s choice in three sentences.
In the latest full week, my log shows four evenings of reading.
Evidence
Dated group notes and a partner’s account of both occasions.
Two dated weekly reading logs.
What helped
Preparing an idea and rehearsing with a partner.
A book beside my bed and a regular reading time.
Next step
Give a reason without reading all my notes.
Keep the routine and note an interesting idea each time.
These are invented examples. The log shows reading frequency; it does not alone prove a higher reading level. The speaking example supports a claim about one kind of participation.
Evaluate the presentation J5
Look for a clear comparison, evidence, an explanation and an achievable step. Accept “We cannot decide who changed most overall” with a reason about different measures. The one-week follow-up should report what happened and adjust the plan as needed.
