I can discover comparison patterns, choose the correct form, and check whether two comparable things are being compared.
Focus: Compare the same aspect; keep the base form between as … as.
核心问题 Inquiry question
What makes a comparison clear and fair?
G1 拆开一个比较句 Take a comparison apart 8 min
Read Grammar Focus on p. 25. Begin with these examples. Underline the people or things compared, circle the comparison words, and note the aspect, such as height or dancing.
1. Emma is taller than Ella, but her hair is shorter than Ella’s.
2. Ella dances better than Emma, but Emma sings louder than her.
3. Emma always gets up earlier than me, but I work as hard as her!

Different: be + comparative + than
Ella dances better than Emma.
I work as hard as her.
What changes when a sentence compares an action rather than a description?
G2 归纳暂定规则 Make a first rule 7 min
Sort tall, late, slim, funny, early, colourful, outgoing, well, much, hard by the change they need. Write each comparative. Group words that change in the same way. Keep a separate group for a word that does not fit your first rule.

Try 3b in the textbook. Compare a question beginning with Is and one beginning with Does. What follows each? Why does an equal comparison not use the comparative form?
G4 给句子做诊断 Repair and explain 7 min
Improve the learner’s notes. Explain one repair to a partner. Do not just say “It sounds wrong.”
a. Emma is more taller than Ella.
b. I work as harder as my sister.
c. Emma’s hair is shorter than Ella.
d. Does Tom more outgoing than Sam?
Challenge: Can than me and than I am both follow “She is taller”? What does the second version make explicit?

用数据作出有依据的选择 Decide with data
G5 城市比较有边界 Read the data carefully 10 min
Use this textbook chart. Population figures refer to 2024; temperature and rainfall figures are averages. Complete 3c, then answer the travellers.
指标 Fact
广州 Guangzhou
温哥华 Vancouver
Population (2024)
18.978 million
0.76 million
Area
7,436 square km
115 square km
Average rainfall per year
1,923 mm
1,475 mm
Average January temperature
16°C
5°C
Average July temperature
31°C
18°C
Alex wants a warmer January. Jamie wants a cooler July. Recommend a city to each, using an average as evidence. An average is not a promise about the weather on one day.
Can the chart tell us which city has a rainier January? What extra information would you need?
G6 带走一条规则 Exit transfer 5 min
Write a new comparison about two familiar objects and an equal comparison. Make the aspect clear. Ask a partner to check the word form and whether you compared like with like.

G1–G4
句子中的关系 Meaning and form G1
The first example compares height and hair length. Ella’s means Ella’s hair. The second compares dancing and singing. The third compares getting-up time and effort. In “Ella dances better”, better describes how she dances. In “I work as hard as her”, the base form hard expresses equal effort in the as … as pattern.
A description often uses be + an adjective: Emma is taller. An action uses a meaningful verb: Ella dances better. A comparative adjective and adverb can look similar, but their jobs differ.
由例子归纳规则 Word forms and rules G2–G3
归纳类别 Pattern
本课例子 Examples
Add -er
tall → taller; hard → harder
End in silent e: add -r
late → later
Double the final consonant here
slim → slimmer
Consonant + y: change y to i and add -er
funny → funnier; early → earlier
Use more with these longer adjectives
colourful → more colourful; outgoing → more outgoing
Irregular forms
well → better; much → more
Equal comparison
as + base adjective / adverb + as: as slim as; as fast as
Do not infer that every short or two-syllable word behaves identically. Slim doubles its final consonant after a short stressed vowel. These examples give the patterns needed here.
Textbook 3b: 1 “Is Julie slimmer than you?” “No, she isn’t. She is as slim as me.” 2 “Are you more serious than your cousin?” “No, I’m not. I am less serious than he is.” 3 “Is Tom smarter than Sam?” “No, I don’t think so. I think Sam is as smart as Tom.” 4 “Does Jack swim faster than Sally?” “No, he doesn’t. He swims as fast as Sally.”
Is begins a be + description question; Does needs a base-form verb such as swim. Equality uses the base form between as and as.
修订与解释 Repair and explain G4
a. Emma is taller than Ella. Do not combine more and taller.
b. I work as hard as my sister. Use the base form.
c. Emma’s hair is shorter than Ella’s. Compare hair with hair.
d. Is Tom more outgoing than Sam? Use be with the adjective.
“She is taller than me” and “She is taller than I am” are both standard. The second makes the comparison clause explicit. Do not reject the first just for using me.

G5–G6
用数据支持建议 Use data to support a recommendation G5
Textbook 3c, in order: smaller than; larger than; more … than; warmer than; cooler than.
比较内容 Aspect
数据支持 What the data show
Population
Vancouver’s 2024 population was smaller: 0.76 million compared with 18.978 million.
Area
Guangzhou is larger in area: 7,436 square km compared with 115 square km.
Annual rainfall
Guangzhou has more rain per year on average: 1,923 mm compared with 1,475 mm.
Alex: “I suggest Guangzhou for a warmer January. Its average January temperature is 16°C, while Vancouver’s is 5°C.”
Jamie: “I suggest Vancouver for a cooler July. Its average July temperature is 18°C, compared with 31°C in Guangzhou.”
These answers fit the stated temperature preferences. They do not guarantee a particular day’s weather or establish a better city overall. A different recommendation needs an explicitly added preference and must still interpret the data correctly.
The chart cannot tell us which city has a rainier January. A larger annual total does not show how rain is spread through the year. We need comparable January rainfall figures, preferably averages for the same period.
在新情境中检查比较 Transfer the rule G6
A teacher-made example: two bags weigh 400 g and 600 g and both cost 80 yuan. “The first bag is lighter than the second. It is as expensive as the second.” Each aspect matches its evidence. Other familiar objects are fine; learners need not invent exact measurements.
A useful check: identify both things; name one aspect; choose the adjective or adverb; check its form; read for meaning. “Guangzhou’s population is larger than that of Vancouver” also compares like with like.
教学追问 Prompts for further thinking
For “Guangzhou is better”, ask “Better for whom and in what way?” For a correct word form but mismatched objects, ask students to name what appears on each side of than. Keep the discussion on what the evidence can support.
