I can connect opinions with examples, notice useful differences within a similar friendship, and give an honest but respectful response.
Focus: Follow the link from a friend’s action to its effect.

Must good friends be alike?
R1 暂定一个观点 Take a first position 5 min
Use 1a to compare yourself with a friend. Then read Tom’s forum question on p. 26. Choose a first position: friends should be similar / different / either can work. Give a reason. You may keep or change your position later.
R2 读出观点与依据 Trace the writers’ thinking 8 min
Read Matt’s and Diana’s posts. Complete 1c in your textbook. Choose one useful example from each post. Explain its effect rather than copying a long sentence.

Compare with a partner. Underline the words that support your notes. If your partner chose another example, check whether it works too.

相似之中有不同 Notice differences inside similarity
R3 镜子意味着一模一样吗 Explore the mirror 10 min
Matt calls a good friend a mirror. Does Stephen have to be exactly like Matt? Investigate the two interests below.
兴趣 Interest
共同之处 What they share
不同之处 A difference
友谊的作用 How it helps
Badminton
Reading
Test this statement: “Matt’s example shows that differences have no place in a good friendship.” Find a detail that makes the statement too strong.
Explain the mirror in your own words. Use “similar” carefully; it need not mean “the same in every way”.
R4 坦率怎样帮助朋友 Infer and respond 9 min
Read the lines about Zhang Yong. What does straightforward probably mean? Name the action that helps you work it out.
A friend’s story has an unclear ending. Compare: “Your story is bad” and “I like your opening, but I cannot tell why the boy leaves.” Which comment helps more? Add a respectful suggestion the writer can act on.

Work in groups of four. Prepare your own view. Use two text clues: one from Matt and one from Diana. You need not agree with either writer completely.

I think … because … / In Matt’s post, … This shows … / Diana’s example suggests … / I agree about …, but … / Does this prove that every friend should …?
Give a 20–30-second reply. A listener asks how your clue supports your opinion. Improve one sentence. In a second round, speak without the sentence support.

R6 保留或修正观点 Reflect on your reasoning 3 min
Return to R1: “I changed my view because …” or “I still think …, but I would now add …”. Name the evidence that mattered.

R1–R6
观点与文本证据 Positions and evidence R1–R2
R1. Any of the three positions can work with a reason. Personal preference is not a rule for everyone. R2. Matt values shared interests: Stephen’s skill encourages badminton practice, and sharing books expands their reading choices. Diana values helpful differences: Yuan Lei helps her become more outgoing; Zhang Yong gives honest opinions about mistakes. Record an effect as well as an action.
Textbook 1c: Matt—B; Stephen—A; Diana—D; Yuan Lei—E; Zhang Yong—C.
透过镜子看差异 The mirror and its limits R3
Both Matt and Stephen enjoy sports and reading and are serious. Stephen is better at badminton and wins their games, so Matt practises harder and improves. Matt reads more history books; Stephen reads many novels. They share books. Shared interests bring them together, while differences in skill and reading choices also help.
A mirror suggests familiar interests or qualities, not identical skills or opinions. Stephen’s stronger badminton is a counterexample to “differences have no place”: it motivates Matt’s practice. Matt values similarity, yet his example contains a useful difference.
坦率与尊重 Directness and respect R4
Straightforward means direct and honest here. The clue is Zhang Yong’s willingness to give an opinion when Diana makes a mistake. The second story comment helps more because it identifies a problem the writer can fix. Add: “Could you include a sentence explaining why he decides to leave?” Honest feedback can be kind; a harsh general judgement offers little guidance.
表达有根据的立场 A reasoned response R5–R6
R5 model: “Both kinds of friendship can work. Matt and Stephen share interests, but Stephen’s stronger badminton also helps Matt improve. Diana learns to meet people from the more outgoing Yuan Lei. These examples show that helping each other matters. A difference alone does not make every friendship good.”
R6 model: “I still prefer similar interests, but we can have different strengths. Matt and Stephen both enjoy badminton, yet their skill difference encourages Matt to practise harder.” Look for a position, evidence and a clearer reason or limit.
教材问答补充 Textbook 1d reference
1 A good friend can reflect similar interests and qualities, as Stephen does. 2 Stephen always wins, so Matt tries harder in practice; practice helps him improve. 3 Both enjoy sports and reading and are serious. 4 Yuan Lei is outgoing and has a great sense of humour; Diana is shy but becoming more outgoing. 5 An honest friend can point out mistakes and help Diana improve. 6 Respect differences, learn from each other and give considerate, specific feedback. Accept supported alternatives to open questions.
