For whoever wants an exciting and challenging road trip, we came up with our list of the world’s most dangerous roads that would test even the best road trip cars. Read on to discover routes that promise unmatched thrills!
Col du Chaussy, France
At 1,532 metres above sea level, Col du Chaussy is a high mountain pass in south-eastern France. This stretch is only about 3.2 km long but features 17 sharp turns. There’s a small concrete barrier as you zigzag upward but this road, while impossibly picturesque, is still one of the most dangerous roads in the world.
Taroko Gorge Road, China
Taroko Gorge Road is framed by rock on one side and sheer cliff drops on the other. The popular 19 km stretch is so impressive that it draws a constant parade of tour buses, cars, scooters, bicyclists and pedestrians, all sharing the same narrow road. If you want to hit this road, you’d better hope the weather is fair, otherwise, you might suffer through landslides and floods that make sections impassable.
Commonwealth Avenue, Philippines
Commonwealth Avenue isn’t situated on the edge of a mountain. In fact, it’s a wide urban highway that’s just 12 km long. Due to poor drainage (排水) which brings floods on the avenue, this road has earned the tragic nickname “Killer Highway”.

As more people travel to destinations that may soon disappear because of climate change, experts and guides weigh in on how this practice could help protect these places — if done right.
Known as last-chance tourism, this “see-it-before-it’s-gone” practice is controversial. Research shows that the amount of fuel (燃料量) it takes to travel to these faraway destinations could speed up their very damage. But supporters say that, done responsibly, it can also inspire travellers to protect the very places they came to see.
As more people travel to see disappearing destinations like coral reefs (珊瑚礁), Robin Kundis Craig, a professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, warns that without education and careful limits, “millions of people are stepping on an already fragile (脆弱的) landscape that’s trying to deal with climate change”.
The negative effects of visitors travelling together to fragile ecosystems are well documented. As the seas warm and gas-powered boats bring more people to the Great Barrier Reef, the huge ecosystem recently experienced its worst environmental event, coral bleaching (白化), on record. Coral reefs in Indonesia and Hawaii have also been damaged by tourists, and seafloors can take years to return to normal after being damaged by the anchors (锚) of tourist boats. Venice has been suffering under the weight of over-tourism for ten years. And as more tourists now travel to Antarctica every year, they risk introducing invasive species (入侵物种) that harm fragile ecosystems.
In 2024, Craig published a paper showing that those who manage many “last-chance” destinations aren’t prepared for the changing feelings travellers often experience when they visit — from joy to sadness. Craig argues that guides and park managers should direct travellers’ feelings into action to help protect these sites.
Ashley Perrin is a guide with Aurora Expeditions. For Perrin, each trip is an opportunity to share — and protect — some of the places she loves. “People won’t protect what they don’t know,” she said. “We need people to go and see these environments in order to fall in love with them — in order to protect them.”
4.What does the underlined word “controversial” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Widely accepted. B.Quite unexpected.
C.Attracting attention. D.Causing disagreement.
5.How is paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A.By giving examples. B.By describing a process.
C.By making comparisons. D.By following space order.
6.What should last-chance tourism lead to according to Craig?
A.Deep admiration of nature. B.Memorable travel experiences.
C.Action to care for fragile ecosystems. D.Opportunities to educate younger people.
7.What is Perrin’s attitude towards last-chance tourism?
A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Curious. D.Unclear.
In my mid-twenties, I boarded a plane to Istanbul with a vague unease I was too embarrassed to name. My thoughts about the city had been shaped by what I saw in the news and heard from others: crowded streets, unfriendly locals, strange customs. Stepping out of the airport, I waited for the discomfort to settle. 8 Instead, I found shopkeepers offering tea to strangers, teenagers practicing English while playing games, and a grandmother motioning me to join her family’s dinner simply because I looked lost. 9
Psychologist Gordon Allport’s “contact theory” explains this. He said that when people from different groups meet as equals and work toward common goals, prejudice can break down. In my case, a local and I tried together to read a broken public transit map. 10 Small moments like these change us. Watching a grandmother buy vegetables in a Moroccan market, or listening to a taxi driver in Hanoi talk about his daughter’s college dreams — these moments turn strangers into real people. The “foreigner” stops being an idea and becomes a neighbor. As one traveler once said, “the more we travel authentically, the more we see our shared human experiences.”
11 If you stay inside a resort and never talk to locals, you might actually keep your old prejudices. Travel does not always make things better right away. Sometimes it feels uncomfortable at first. But each honest conversation — sharing a meal, laughing at a language mistake, watching daily life happen — breaks down the prejudices.
When I left that dinner table in Istanbul, we still couldn’t fully understand each other’s language. 12 I had learned something important: what unites us is much bigger than what separates us. The world feels less foreign when we finally sit at its tables.
A.It never came.
B.But that didn’t matter.
C.Of course, not every trip will open your mind.
D.In one week, my old prejudices disappeared.
E.These moments revealed why traveling light mattered.
F.We were both confused and both trying to help each other.
G.I admit overcoming language barriers is key to cultural exchange.

Taroko Gorge Road is framed by rock on one side and sheer cliff drops on the other. The popular 19 km stretch is so impressive that it draws a constant parade of tour buses, cars, scooters, bicyclists and pedestrians, all sharing the same narrow road.
A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Curious. D.Unclear.
【答案】4.D 5.A 6.C 7.B

根据第二段中的“Known as last-chance tourism, this “see-it-before-it’s-gone” practice is controversial. Research shows that the amount of fuel (燃料量) it takes to travel to these faraway destinations could speed up their very damage. But supporters say that, done responsibly, it can also inspire travellers to protect the very places they came to see.(这种被称为末日旅游、在消失前一睹其风貌的旅行方式是controversial。研究表明,前往这些遥远目的地所消耗的燃料会加速它们的破坏。但支持者称,如果负责任地开展,它也能激励游客保护他们前来观赏的地方。)”可知,一部分人认为末日旅游会加速景点破坏,另一部分人认为它可以促进保护,这件事引发争议,由此可知,划线单词的意思为“有争议的”,与D项“引发不同意见”意义相近。
5.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“The negative effects of visitors travelling together to fragile ecosystems are well documented. And as more tourists now travel to Antarctica every year, they risk introducing invasive species (入侵物种) that harm fragile ecosystems.(游客一同前往脆弱生态系统所带来的负面影响已有充分记录。
根据第五段中的“Craig argues that guides and park managers should direct travellers’ feelings into action to help protect these sites.(克雷格认为导游和园区管理者应当引导游客的情绪转化为行动,来帮助保护这些地点。)”
根据第六段中的“People won’t protect what they don’t know,” she said. “We need people to go and see these environments in order to fall in love with them — in order to protect them.(“人们不会保护自己所不了解的东西,”她说。“我们需要人们前去看见这些环境,从而爱上它们——从而保护它们。”)”可知,Perrin认为末日旅游能让人们了解并保护自然,她对此持积极态度。
二.七选五:
