In 2026, Wang Hong became one of the first mathematicians from China and the third female (女性的) mathematician in the world to win the Fields Medal, also known as the Nobel Prize of Mathematics. It is given every four years to young mathematicians under 40 years old around the world. Wang received the award with her university classmate Deng Yu at the International Congress of Mathematicians.
Wang Hong was born in 1991 in Guilin, Guangxi. She showed great interest in learning from an early age. At 16, she entered Peking University, where she first studied earth science before changing her major to mathematics. However, her journey was not always easy. Surrounded by many excellent classmates, she sometimes doubted herself. She even spent half a year learning architecture (建筑学) before finally returning to mathematics.
After university, she studied in France and the United States. In 2019, she received her PhD in mathematics from MIT. Her greatest achievement was proving the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture (三维挂谷猜想), a famous maths problem that mathematicians believed might be true but could not prove for more than 100 years. Together with Joshua Zahl, she developed a new method and finally proved it. Her work has helped mathematicians and scientists explore other difficult problems in mathematics and physics.
Although Wang Hong is a famous mathematician, she has a balanced lifestyle. She believes that people cannot learn well by forcing themselves to study all the time. She once said, “Rest when you feel tired; study when you have energy.” She exercises regularly and takes breaks when facing difficult problems.

Sydney McLaughlin was perhaps born to be an athlete. Sydney’s father tried out for the 1984 Olympics in the 400-metre race, while her mother was also a runner. She met Sydney’s father in college when she was training with the men’s track team (田径队) because there was no women’s team. Following their parents’ footsteps, Sydney McLaughlin and three other children in her family started running at an early age. Her father finally had to give up the sport because of a serious heart problem.
So how did Sydney get into running as a young child? It was the promise of a chocolate bar at the age of 6 that inspired her in the beginning. Sydney’s dad told her that if she won a kids’ race, she would get a chocolate bar. When she was 7, she did just that. She said she stayed with running after that so that she could continue to get chocolate!
At 16, Sydney qualified (取得资格) for the Rio 2016 Olympics. At that time, she was the youngest to run for the USA track team in 36 years. Sadly, she didn’t make it to the final. Three years later at the World Championship, the young athlete won gold in the 4×100-metre relay (接力赛) and silver in the 400-metre hurdles (跨栏). Then in the 2020 Olympics, she won gold medals in both races. In the 2024 Olympics, she won gold medals in the two events again.
Sydney said, “Everyone has their own hurdles, and you don’t know who’s getting over them faster than anybody else. It’s really about devoting (献身于) yourself to what you have control of.” Her ability to do that is considered one of her greatest strengths (力量).
In 2024, Sydney lowered her time to 50.37 seconds in the 400-metre hurdles, breaking the world record! When asked how she had achieved it, she replied that her faith (信念) had given her the strength to achieve that much.
Although Sydney has achieved a lot, she never stops looking for ways to improve. And what about her performance at the 2028 Olympics? Let’s look forward to it.
33. What do we know about Sydney’s family?

Golden apples hanging on the backyard tree finally made me understand my father’s silent love. But three years ago, when I was a 13-year-old boy, I thought adults knew nothing about life.
That warm spring day, Dad came home holding a small apple sapling (树苗). “Let’s plant it together,” he said. I shook my head. “Why do we waste time? The store sells apples ready to eat!” But he just smiled.
For weeks, I complained (抱怨) as we watered the weak tree. “It’ll never grow!” I said angrily when the heavy summer storms nearly made it fall over. Father simply saved it with bamboo sticks, saying, “Good things take time, just like building a strong house.” At that time, I didn’t get what he meant.
Our final exams were at the end of the term. Since I failed Maths, I tore (撕) my test paper angrily, saying, “I’m done!” Father found me sitting next to our knee-high tree. Instead of giving long speeches, he pointed at its new leaves. “Do you remember when it almost didn’t make it through the storm? Now it’s standing tall, because it refused to give up!”
I realized it all of a sudden. I began to study just as the tree grew, slowly but surely. My father quietly cheered me on. During late-night studying, he’d put some water beside my books. Even without saying anything, his strong hand on my shoulder said it all.
This morning, I found the first red apple shining among the leaves. Dad gently handed it to me after picking it. “Hard work makes it sweet,” he smiled. The apple tasted like someone had poured patience and love into it.

Lila joined her neighbourhood library's helper team last month, hoping to get a community service paper for school. At first, she only did the easiest task: putting returned books on the front desk and staying away from the “messy corner”—a pile of old children’s books with broken pages and pale covers.
One afternoon, Mrs Hale, a librarian, asked Lila to sort (整理) that messy corner. Lila complained, looking through a picture book with a missing page. “Why do we waste time on them?” Mrs Hale smiled and gave her a glue and a tape. “Just try fixing one. See how it feels.”
Lila didn’t want to, but she picked a storybook about a little bear. She taped the cover back on, glued a broken page, and used a marker to fix a dirty picture of the bear’s paw. An hour later, a girl named Mia walked in, looking at the fixed book in Lila’s hand. “I loved that bear story when I was little!” Mia said, eyes lighting up. “My mum used to read it to me, but I thought it was gone forever.” Lila gave her the book. Mia sat down and read the book gently.
That day, Lila fixed three more books. She didn’t just get hours for her paper—she realized small “unimportant” work could bring joy to someone else. Later, Mrs Hale told her, “Most helpful things in life aren’t flashy. They’re the glue that puts broken things back together, for someone who needs them.”

七、书面表达参考范文
The person who has helped me grow
My deskmate is a warmhearted girl. She is patient and always ready to give others a hand.
Once I doubted myself because of my poor grades. I felt upset and wanted to give up. She noticed my trouble. She encouraged me and shared her learning ways with me. Whenever I met hard problems, she explained them to me clearly. Little by little, I made great progress.
From this experience, I learn that help can bring us courage. When people are in trouble, we should try our best to give them a hand.
