Most people think that personality is something you are born with. However, a new study shows that the job you choose can actually change your personality over time.
Researchers at a university in the UK followed 4,500 people for more than ten years. They found that people who worked in jobs that required a lot of social interaction became more outgoing and confident. On the other hand, people who worked alone for long periods became quieter and less interested in meeting new people.
The study also found that people who worked in creative jobs, such as designers and writers, became more open to new experiences. They were more willing to try different foods, visit new places, and learn new skills. In contrast, people in highly structured jobs, such as accountants and factory workers, became more organized but less creative.
Dr. Helen Smith, who led the research, said, “We used to believe that our personality was fixed by the age of 30. But this study proves that our jobs can shape who we are. If you want to change something about yourself, choosing the right job might be a good place to start.”
However, not everyone agrees. Some psychologists argue that people usually choose jobs that match their existing personality. They believe that a person who is naturally outgoing will choose a social job, rather than the job making them outgoing.
25. According to the study, how many people were followed?
A. About 450. B. About 4,500. C. About 45,000. D. About 450,000.
26. What happened to people who worked alone for a long time?
A. They became more confident. B. They became more creative.
C. They became quieter. D. They became more organized.
27. Which type of job made people more open to new experiences?
A. Teaching. B. Accounting. C. Factory work. D. Designing.
28. What did Dr. Helen Smith say about personality?
A. It is fixed by age 30. B. It cannot be changed.
C. Jobs can help shape it. D. Only education can change it.
29. What do some psychologists argue in the last paragraph?
A. That personality can change at all.
B. That the study’s method was scientific.
C. That jobs are chosen to match personality.
D. That 4,500 people is a large enough sample.

Did you know that vocabulary is more important than grammar? If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if the grammar is not completely perfect.
However, one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them. So when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can’t remember it at that moment. Does this often happen to you? The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don’t have a very good memory
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. Every time you learn a new word, for example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition (定义).
You should write the word, the definition in English or translation, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create.
Imagine you just learn the word “generous”. Write in your vocabulary notebook: generous (adjective), definition—giving or willing to give freely. Example one, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner. You’re very generous. Example two, my example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. It’s best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It’s helpful for you to remember it. These two simple steps —writing the word and using it at once—help you remember and use new words
Do you have a vocabulary notebook? If not, start now.
30. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The problem. B. The new word. C. The conversation. D. The dictionary.
31. What’s the correct order of the following steps of taking vocabulary notes?
①Make your own example sentence.
②Write the word its English definition or translation.
③Copy an example sentence from the article or dictionary.
④Read your notebook again and add one more example sentence.
A. ②③①④ B. ②③④① C. ③④②① D. ③②①④
32. How can we make the best example sentences according to the writer?
A. By asking for help from friends. B. By explaining words’ definitions.
C. By connecting them with our life. D. By adding words from the article.
33. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Reading is more active than just writing a definition.
B. You can’t communicate successfully if you are not good at grammar.
C. To learn and remember new words, it is important to use them at once.
D. Without a good memory, it is impossible for you to remember a new word.
34. What’s the best title for the passage?

Recently, a video of “Xiang Yu” became very popular on Chinese social media. During a “Su Chao” (Jiangsu City Football League) match in Suqian, an actor dressed as the ancient warrior Xiang Yu appeared on the field riding a war cart. He shouted, “I, Xiang Yu, have returned!” Thousands of fans cheered loudly. Suqian is Xiang Yu’s real hometown, so many people were moved. The videos were watched over 800 million times online.
So, who was the real Xiang Yu? He was a great warrior who lived more than 2,000 years ago. He came from a noble (贵族的) family in the State of Chu. He was very tall and very strong. It was said that he could lift a heavy bronze pot with his own hands. In a famous battle, Xiang Yu led his soldiers across a river to help an ally (盟友). After they crossed, he ordered his men to destroy (摧毁) all their cooking pots and boats. He told them, “We will either win or die. There is no way back!” His soldiers fought with all their strength, and they won a great victory.
However, Xiang Yu was sometimes too proud to take good advice. In the end, Xiang Yu lost the war. At his saddest moment, he chose to end his own life by the Wu River.
Today, many people still respect Xiang as a true hero. They think highly of his courage and truthfulness. People call him the “Hegemon King of Western Chu (西楚霸王)”. His spirit and story make people feel strong, just as the crowds in Suqian showed when they welcomed their hero home.

阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Most people think that personality is something you are born with.
【答案】25. B 26. C 27. D 28. C 29. C

A. Reading is more active than just writing a definition.

D. Without a good memory, it is impossible for you to remember a new word.
