Thomas Hardy was born at Higher Bockhampton, Dorset, on June 2, 1840, where his father worked as a builder. From his father he gained an appreciation of music, and from his mother an appetite for learning and the delights of the countryside about his rural home.
Due to his poor health, Hardy did not start school until he was eight. At 16, Hardy helped his father with architectural drawings and then started to work for architects. Later he moved to London and began writing poems, but his works were rejected by publishers. In 1870, he was sent to work in Cornwall. There he met his future wife Emma Gifford, who encouraged him in his writing.
Hardy published his first novel Desperate Remedies in 1871, to universal disinterest. But the following year Under the Greenwood Tree brought Hardy popular praise for the first time. As with most of his fictional works, this novel incorporated real places around Dorset into the plot, including the village school that Hardy attended. After Under the Greenwood Tree came a serialized novel A Pair of Blue Eves. Once more Hardy drew upon real life, and the novel mirrors his romance with Emma.
Hardy followed this with Far From the Madding Crowd, set in Puddletown, near his birthplace. This novel finally netted Hardy the success that enabled him to give up his architectural practice and concentrate only on writing.
The Hardys lived in London for a short time, then in Yeovil, then in Sturminster Newton, which Hardy described as “idyllic (田园诗般的)”. It was at Sturminster Newton that he penned Return of the Native, one of his most enduring (持久的) works.
In 1887, Hardy published The Woodlander, a story concerning an honest woodsman in a small village. Then in 1891 one of his best works, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, came out, which was set primarily in the English countryside during the 19th century.
Tess excited interest, but his next work, Jude the Obscure (1896), threw Hardy into a storm of controversy (争议), which made him turn away from fiction and focused on poetry for the rest of his life.
4. What do we know about Hardy?
A. He was into drawing as a young man. B. He got fame at first attempt of writing.
C. His writing career started with poems. D. His wife Emma shared his interest.
5. What does the underlined word “incorporated” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Integrated. B. Changed. C. Developed. D. Forced.
6. After which novel was Hardy fully devoted to writing?
A. A Pair of Blue Eyes. B. Far From the Madding Crowd.
C. Tess of the d’Urbervilles. D. Jude the Obscure.
7. What is the common element in most of Hardy’s novels?
A. Campus life. B. Life in London.
C. Marriage life. D. Life in the countryside.
C 5. A 6. B 7. D

根据第三段第三句中的“real places around Dorset into the plot(……多塞特郡的真实场景进入情节)”可知,此处是指在小说中把多塞特郡周围的真实场景融入了情节,所以incorporated意为“包含,合并”。故选A。

Then in 1891 one of his best works, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, came out, which was set primarily in the English countryside during the 19th century.(1887年,哈代出版了《樵夫》,讲述了一个小村庄里一个诚实的樵夫的故事。

Can you imagine there being a community where boys and girls growing up together can finally speak different languages? In Ubang Nigeria, it really happens. It’s not exactly clear what percentage of the words in the men’s and women’s languages are different, but there are enough examples to make sentences sound different when spoken by the opposite sex. For “clothing”, men use the word “nki”, while women say “ariga”; “kitchi” means tree for men, while women say “okweng”. These are not just some slight pronunciation differences, but totally different words. “It’s almost like two different lexicons (词汇集),” a language expert, Chi Chi Undle said. “There are a lot of words that men and women share in common, but there are others which are totally different depending on your sex. They don’t sound alike, and don’t have the same letters. They are completely different words.”
Interestingly, both men and women are able to understand each other perfectly in Ubang, as both boys and girls grow up around their parents and get to learn both languages, but by the age of 10, boys are expected to speak in the male tongue. It seems that there is a stage the male will reach and he discovers he is not using the rightful language. When he starts speaking the men’s language, you know the maturity is coming into him.
No one really knows how or why the double-language tradition of Ubang began. Chi Chi Undie believes the two languages are the result of a “double-sex culture” where men and women operate in two separate spheres (范围) and live in separate worlds that rarely come together. However, she admits this is a weak theory, as the double-sex culture is present in many parts of Africa, where there are no different languages for men and women.
Today, with English words constantly entering the lexicon of young Nigerians, Ubang’s two languages are in danger of being lost forever. Worse still, neither the male nor female language is written down, so they both rely on young people passing them down to the next generation.
8. What do we know about languages in Ubang?
A. Word differences account for a high percentage.
B. Men and women speak totally different languages.
C. Word differences partly exist between the opposite sex.
D. Men and women pronounce differently on the same word.
9. Why can me and women understand each other easily in Ubang?
A. Their lexicons sound alike.
B. They learn both languages at school.
C. The men can speak two different languages.
D. They are exposed to both languages in their childhood.
10. What does Chi Chi Undie want to explore in Paragraph 3?
A. The change of double-sex culture.
B. The theory of doube-sex culture.
C. The origin of double-language tradition.
D. The sphere of double-language tradition.
11. How does the author feel about the disappearing languages in Ubang?
A. Frightened. B. Concerned.
C. Confused. D. Stressed.
C 9. D 10. C 11. B

They don’t sound alike, and don’t have the same letters. They are completely different words.”(“有很多男人和女人共用的词汇,但根据你的性别,有些词完全不同。

根据第三段第一句话“No one really knows how or why the double-language tradition of Ubang began. (没有人真正知道乌邦的双语传统是如何或为什么开始的)”可推知,Chi Chi Undie想在第三段中探讨乌邦双语传统的起源。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Worse still, neither the male nor female language is written down, so they both rely on young people passing them down to the next generation.(更糟糕的是,男性和女性语言都没有被记录下来,因此他们都依赖年轻人将其传给下一代)”可推知,作者担心乌邦的双语传统会消失。故选B。

If electric bikes haven’t caught your attention yet, here’s one that might. Okapi, a Boston-based start-up, is producing a unique e-bike that bridges the gap between motorcycles and ordinary bikes.
These aren’t normal bikes. If the futuristic appearance doesn’t give them away, the specs (规格) will: Okapi’s bikes have an all-electric range of up to 40 miles and a top speed of around 30 mph. Those aren’t crazy numbers, but they are more than adequate for an ordinary bike. The company’s selling its bikes for just under $3,000. That’s in line with other e-bikes’ pricing, but Okapi’s bikes look more appealing than the others, which try (with varying degrees of success) to look like normal bicycles.
The bikes’ full suspension, hidden storage, and 1,000-watt motor all add up to a fun ride. Okapi’s design appears to be stronger and more able to handle the bumps (碰撞) than many other electric bikes, some of which appear to be modeled after old models. The main downside to Okapi’s design is that it supports a maximum of 280 pounds, which may stop some riders enjoying the bike.
Okapi’s approach to the e-bike is a little different from others’. While more than one company tries to hide their electric powertrain (动力系统) underneath slim bodywork, Okapi puts it all out for the world to see in a big, square battery pack. There’s almost a futuristic dirt bike look to the bike, which is less awkward than it sounds.
Electric bikes are getting cheaper, almost every day, but Okapi’s product charges a high price: The Starter Edition bike costs $2,989.98. The good news is that Okapi’s bike looks better and stronger than many offerings on the market today.
Though they’re not the most mainstream product out there, e-bikes are worth the coin at almost any price. If you’re considering buying an electric bike, do it. E-bikes absolutely offer you an enjoyable and exciting experience, even on the cheaper end.
12. What do we know about Okapi’s new bike?
A. Its look is normal. B. Its speed is steady.
C. It has a lower price. D. It has a limited load.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The battery pack. B. Slim bodywork.
C. The electric powertrain. D. Okapi’s approach.
14. What is the author’s attitude toward e-bikes?
A. Objective. B. Unclear.
C. Conservative. D. Supportive.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. E-bikes: Cooler than You Think
B. E-bikes: a Future Leader of Bikes
C. E-bikes: a Better Replacement for Cars
D. E-bikes: a Mainstream Way of Transportation
D 13. C 14. D 15. A
根据第三段中的“The main downside to Okapi’s design is that it supports a maximum of 280 pounds, which may stop some riders enjoying the bike.(Okapi设计的主要缺点是,它最多支持280磅,这可能会阻止一些享受自行车的骑手。)”
根据第四段中的“While more than one company tries to hide their electric powertrain (动力系统) underneath slim bodywork, Okapi puts it all out for the world to see in a big, square battery pack(当不止一家公司试图将他们的电动动力系统隐藏在纤细的车身之下时,Okapi将其全部展现在一个巨大的方形电池组中,让世界看到。)”
根据第一段的“If electric bikes haven’t caught your attention yet, here’s one that might. Okapi, a Boston-based start-up, is producing a unique e-bike that bridges the gap between motorcycles and ordinary bikes.(如果电动自行车还没有引起你的注意,这里有一种可能。总部位于波士顿的初创公司Okapi正在生产一种独特的电动自行车,它可以弥合摩托车和普通自行车之间的差距。)”以及下文内容可知,本文主要介绍了Okapi研发的一款新型电动自行车,包括其独特的外观、隐藏的贮存空间等,总的来说,这是一款比人们见到的普通电动自行车更好的电动自行车。因此A项适合作文章的标题。故选A。

One particularly cold Saturday in January, I was supposed to take our dog out for a walk, but it was so cold that I didn’t want to go outside. Instead, I just opened the door and let the dog out by himself. I kept an eye on him to make sure he would come back inside.
However, another neighborhood dog quickly ran past our house, and our dog sped after to catch him. I hurriedly went to grab my coat so I could follow my dog, and then I rushed outside. Unfortunately, I was already too late, and my dog was nowhere in sight. I walked a few blocks, but I was unable to find him.
Depressed, I returned home. My mother was standing at the door waiting, and she asked me what had happened. “I know I was supposed to walk our dog,” I admitted, “but I thought he would be able to go outside and come back by himself. Now he’s gone and I can’t find him anywhere.”
My mother was very angry with me; she said I should have been more responsible. She decided to help by making some signs. The signs read, “Lost: A big black dog. Please call us right away” and she printed our phone number on the bottom. “Okay, Darrell,” she said, as she handed over those signs, “now go post these on all the street posts.”
My sister and I grabbed the signs and we posted them along our street as well as along the surrounding streets. The whole time, I was incredibly sad and worried about our dog. All I could think about was how cold it was and how cold our dog must be. My sister wanted to go home, so I told her I’d walk her home, but then keep looking for the dog myself.
注意:

I took my sister home and continued my search alone. I walked along the streets and called my dog’s name. Shivering with cold, I felt worried and guilty. Suddenly, I heard a weak bark from behind a bush. Running towards it, I found my dog shaking in the corner. Seeing me , he jumped into my arms. I held him tightly and took him home.
I took my sister home and continued my search alone. With my heart pounding with anxiety , I searched every corner of the neighborhood. The cold wind cut my face like a knife. Just when I was about to give up , a familiar bark came from a dark garage. It was there that I found him, cold and frightened. What mattered most was that he was safe. I hugged him tightly, realizing I must be a responsible owner.

A. Integrated. B. Changed. C. Developed. D. Forced.

A. Frightened. B. Concerned.
C. Confused. D. Stressed.
