What does it mean to travel somewhere new but not be able to see it? That question led me on a 10-day journey through northern India with Traveleyes, a British tour company that pairs blind travelers with normal tourists. I was paired with Candie, a woman from Seattle.
“Please tell me whatever you see, even if it’s just someone sleeping on the sidewalk,” Candie told me when we first met.
So I looked around along the way and tried my best to do what I was told to do. To my surprise, I began to notice how describing things aloud made me more observant. Things I might have otherwise overlooked became more visible to me the moment I put them into words.
“Candie, I see hairdressers shaving customers on low chairs on the sidewalk. They hang their mirrors on the trees along the roadside,” I described to Candie. “I also see cars here driving on the left, and the drivers almost universally ignore the clearly marked road lines!”
We eventually arrived in Ranthambore, one of the best places in India to spot wild tigers. Touring the park in an open-topped bus, we spotted no tigers. Most tourists were disappointed. But Candie and I weren’t, since I discovered tiger footprints on the ground and shared with Candie what I saw and thought about the creature.
“What an amazing journey!” Candie said by the end of the trip. “Thank you very much!”
Candie’s response suddenly reminded me of the difference between how blind and sighted people experience a travel: For sighted travelers, it’s more like watching a film as they tend to rely on immediate visual cues to form quick impressions. For the visually impaired ones, the world reveals itself more slowly, through layers of sound, touch and smell. It’s more like reading a novel, where the story unfolds through detail and imagination.
24. What was special about the journey organized by Traveleyes?
A. It tried to highlight the challenges faced by the blind.
B. Each sighted tourist had to travel with a blind partner.
C. Most of the participants were scientists and researchers.
D. Tourists were encouraged to describe aloud what they saw.
25. What does the underlined word “observant” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Sharp-eyed. B. Intelligent. C. Broad-minded. D. Cautious.
26. What did the author and Candie do in Ranthambore?
A. They shared funny stories. B. They spotted tiger footprints.
C. They tracked tigers on foot. D. They had meaningful discussions.
27. What message does the author most probably want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Actions speak louder than words.
B. Every small act of kindness counts.
C. Travel is feeling, imaging and sharing.
D. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

As heat waves in Western Europe pushed temperatures this summer to punishing levels, the traditional Spanish folding hand fan, or abanico, became an essential tool for cooling, favored by the young and old, women and men from Spain and elsewhere.
But how did this humble thing evolve over centuries? Let’s take a journey through time, tracing the rise, fall and rebirth of the folding hand fan.
It’s believed that China introduced the folding fan, while Japan perfected its design and integrated it deeply into art and social structure. These early fans weren’t just functional-they were works of art made of bamboo and silk, and painted with beautiful scenes.
In Europe, fans were initially imported as luxury goods. By the 1500s, they had become trendy accessories among the nobles. But it wasn’t until the 1800s that fans truly found their golden era in Western fashion and society. Women never left the house without one. Fans weren’t just tools for cooling- they were luxury items and status symbols. Some fans were so artistic that they were displayed more than used. The craftsmanship during this era was second to none. Fanmakers, particularly in France and Spain, were respected by the society.
As the world stepped into the 20th century, everything began to change- including the production of folding hand fans. Industrialization hit hard, and handcrafts gave way to machine-made goods. What once took days to make could now be mass-produced in hours.
With faster production came lower costs, which made fans more accessible to the middle and lower classes. However, the trade-off was a noticeable drop in craftsmanship and artistry. Many traditional fanmakers couldn’t compete with factories, and most of them were forced out of the trade.
On the fashion front, fan use declined as women’s clothing became more and more practical. The shift to simpler styles meant accessories like fans were seen as outdated.
28. Why did the folding hand fan regain popularity in Europe this summer?
A. It was in short supply. B. It was cool to carry it around.
C. It was very hot in Europe. D. It became a symbol of wealth.
29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about regarding the folding hand fan?
A. Its rise. B. Its origin. C. Its fall. D. Its rebirth.
30. What can we know about the traditional European fanmakers in the 20th century?
A. They improved their skills. B. Most of them lost their well-paid jobs.
C. They became factory owners. D. Their products remained competitive.
31. What eventually led to the decline of folding hand fans on the fashion front?
A. Outdated design. B. Shifted artistic taste.
C. Reduced functionality. D. Changed styles of clothing.
D
Climate change is making El Niño stronger and more dangerous than ever before, scientists warn in a new study published in Science. They reveal that El Niño events have become nearly 40% stronger over the past four decades than they were in the preindustrial era.
“We don’t see a time in the past where El Ninos have been as strong as today,” one of the authors, Julia Cole, says in a statement. “Our findings tell us that the big El Niño events of the last 40 years are not normal in the context of the last thousand years.”
El Nino events occur every two to seven years as part of the Pacific Ocean’s El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) natural climate cycle. The ENSO cycle shifts between the warmer El Niño phase and the cooler La Niña phase, with neutral periods in between. Earth’s last El Nino ran from June 2023 to April 2024, delivering a huge amount of heat to our already warming world that made 2024 the hottest year on record.
The study comes as the world is in the grips of a historic “super” El Nino. While daily average sea surface temperatures rose to record highs, forecasters have become almost certain that the 2026 to 2027 El Niño will be an all-time record event.
“The question is not whether the current El Niño is going to happen, but how bad it is going to be, and how bad the impacts will be.” Cole writes. “Previous studies have shown that El Niño is a really big source of climate extremes which may lead to droughts, floods, wildfire and food insecurity.”
The researchers further stress the urgent need to slow down further global warming and note that no country has the resources to be fully protected from these impacts. “This is one more reason we need to move away from fossil fuels, the root cause of the problem,” Cole adds.
32. What did Julia Cole’s team find about El Nino events?
A. They became stronger when they lasted longer.
B. They grew more dangerous in the past 40 years.
C. They started happening shortly after the industrial era.
D. They only occurred every 2 to 7 years 1,000 years ago.
33. Which of the following best describes La Niña?
A. It brings the temperature down. B. It occurs less frequently than El Niños.
C. It is much more dangerous than El Ninos. D. It happens in the middle of the ENSO cycle.
34. How does Julia Cole feel about the current El Niño?
A. Unbothered. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
35. What is required to keep El Niño from worsening according to Julia Cole?
A. Punishing big polluters. B. More and more advanced technologies.
C. Relying less on fossil fuels. D. Commitment from wealthy countries.

Our family just moved to Alaska, and we wanted to spend every possible hour in this beautiful land. Shortly after settling down, we began preparing for our first camping trip. My wife and our two children spent days sorting equipment and food, while I devoted every spare moment to studying maps and reading online tips. We dreamed of a perfect weekend. We had no idea that it would become a fight for survival.
We arrived at the campsite late in the afternoon and set up our tents beside a stream. A few meters away, Matt, a friendly man from Alberta, was camping alone. We chatted briefly, sharing advice about the area. Matt warned us that bears sometimes wandered near campsites, and then proudly recalled how he had once scared off a hungry black bear by shouting and waving sticks. “If bears show up, call me,” he said, giving me his phone number. “I’d be happy to do it again.” I laughed and treated it as nothing more than an amusing camping tale.
By midnight, everyone was asleep. The forest was silent except for the occasional hoot of an owl echoing in the distance. Half-asleep, I vaguely remembered Matt’s bear story, but I brushed it off as pointless nonsense. Suddenly, I heard a strange sound outside the tent. I woke up instantly, my heart pounding wildly.
I unzipped the tent a little and looked out cautiously. Our fire had died down, and pale moonlight passed through the dense branches, casting long shadows across the ground. To my horror, a black bear stood at the edge of our campsite, its eyes shining in the dim light. Two cubs were nosing through a bag of sausages we had carelessly left beside the tent. “Bears!” I whispered, panic flooding my mind.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Then I remembered Matt’s words.

M: That’s right — I started with a couple called Meg and Tyler. They had a stand, piled high with hundreds of pairs of trainers, all styles and colors. But what drew me to them was the fact that they were a couple in their thirties, and almost everyone else are teenagers.
W: And I know so many shoes are thrown away. Why is that?
M: There are lots of reasons. Shoes can look worn or a new style comes out. But above all, it’s that there are so many cheap styles that start to fall apart in no time.

M: Good morning. Well, as you know, the community gardens at Hadley Park aren’t in the best shape, and although the local government has a budget to deal with some of the problems, we do need volunteers for other tasks.
Um, first of all, don’t worry about any litter you see lying about — one of the local schools has offered to help out with that as part of their own environmental project. The priority for you will be to give us a hand with the new wooden fencing — it needs constructing along parts of the bicycle track.
You’ve probably also noticed that the pathways that come from the bicycle track are quite narrow, but the government will widen them later in the year.
The other thing we’re doing is getting rid of some of the foreign species that are growing in the gardens and putting back some native plants and trees. So, you’ll be doing some digging for us and getting those into the ground. So, wear strong, waterproof boots. It’s quite muddy at the moment, and your own gloves would also be advisable. Tools will be available and we’ll also provide food and drink.

B 25. A 26. D 27. C
根据第一段中的“That question led me on a 10-day journey through northern India with Traveleyes, a British tour company that pairs blind travelers with normal tourists.(那个问题让我跟随英国旅游公司Traveleyes开启了一段为期十天的印度北部之旅,这家公司会将失明游客与普通游客结伴同行。)”
根据第三段画线词“observant”后面的“Things I might have otherwise overlooked became more visible to me the moment I put them into words.(当我把它们用语言表述出来时,那些我原本可能忽略的事物变得清晰可见。)”
根据第五段中的“But Candie and I weren’t, since I discovered tiger footprints on the ground and shared with Candie what I saw and thought about the creature.(但坎迪和我却没有,因为我在地上发现了老虎脚印,并把我的所见以及对这只老虎的想法告诉了坎迪。)”
根据最后一段中的“For sighted travelers, it’s more like watching a film as they tend to rely on immediate visual cues to form quick impressions. For the visually impaired ones, the world reveals itself more slowly, through layers of sound, touch and smell. It’s more like reading a novel, where the story unfolds through detail and imagination.(对于视力正常的旅行者而言,旅行更像是看一场电影,他们往往依靠即时的视觉信号快速形成印象。而视障人士感知世界的过程更为缓慢,依靠层层叠叠的声音、触感与气味来认识周遭。这更像是阅读一本小说,故事依靠细节与想象缓缓铺展。)”可知,本段通过对比两类旅行者的不同体验,点明旅行不局限于视觉观赏,更是多感官的感受与细节中的想象。由此推知作者意在传达:旅行的本质是感受、想象与分享。
C
C 29. A 30. B 31. D
根据第一段“As heat waves in Western Europe pushed temperatures this summer to punishing levels, the traditional Spanish folding hand fan, or abanico, became an essential tool for cooling, favored by the young and old, women and men from Spain and elsewhere.(今年夏天,西欧的热浪使气温飙升至令人难以忍受的水平,传统的西班牙折叠手扇因此成为人们降温的必备工具,深受西班牙及世界各地的男女老少喜爱)”可知,今年夏天折叠手扇在欧洲重新流行起来是因为欧洲天气非常炎热。
根据第四段“In Europe, fans were initially imported as luxury goods. Fanmakers, particularly in France and Spain, were respected by the society.(在欧洲,扇子最初是作为奢侈品进口的。
根据倒数第二段“Many traditional fanmakers couldn’t compete with factories, and most of them were forced out of the trade.(许多传统制扇人无法与工厂竞争,其中大多数人被迫退出了这一行业)”可知,20世纪大多数欧洲传统制扇工匠失去了高薪工作。
根据最后一段“On the fashion front, fan use declined as women’s clothing became more and more practical. The shift to simpler styles meant accessories like fans were seen as outdated.(在时尚领域,随着女装变得越来越实用,扇子的使用逐渐减少。更简约的设计趋势使得像扇子这样的配饰被视为过时)”可知,最终导致折叠手扇在时尚界衰落的原因是服装风格的改变。
B 33. A 34. D 35. C

根据第一段“They reveal that El Niño events have become nearly 40% stronger over the past four decades than they were in the preindustrial era.(他们指出,过去四十年间,厄尔尼诺现象的强度比工业革命前时期强了近40%)”可知,朱莉娅·科尔的团队发现过去40年里,厄尔尼诺现象变得更加危险。
根据第三段“The ENSO cycle shifts between the warmer El Niño phase and the cooler La Niña phase, with neutral periods in between.(厄尔尼诺-南方涛动(ENSO)周期在较暖的厄尔尼诺阶段和较冷的拉尼娜阶段之间交替,中间为中性阶段)”可知,拉尼娜现象会降低气温。
根据倒数第二段“The question is not whether the current El Niño is going to happen, but how bad it is going to be, and how bad the impacts will be.(问题不在于当前的厄尔尼诺现象是否会发生,而在于它会有多严重,以及其带来的影响有多恶劣)”可知,朱莉娅·科尔对当前的厄尔尼诺现象感到担心。
根据最后一段““This is one more reason we need to move away from fossil fuels, the root cause of the problem,” Cole adds.(“这又是一个我们需要摆脱化石燃料的理由,而化石燃料正是问题的根源,”科尔补充道)”可知,根据朱莉娅·科尔的观点,要防止厄尔尼诺现象恶化需要减少对化石燃料的依赖。

Nowadays, when we are hungry, we can place orders just with a few taps on our phones. ____36____. With such instant access to meals from a wide range of restaurants, food delivery platforms offer unmatched convenience. But behind this pleasant experience lie many unseen side effects.
____37____. Online restaurants may offer more food options, but we may enjoy much less socialization: Workers simply drop off food, perhaps ring the doorbell, and leave. Without the need for human contact, we may gradually isolate (孤立) ourselves.
Health risks are another overlooked negative effect. Compared to meals made in traditional restaurants, online restaurants often prioritize taste and appearance. They frequently come at the expense of nutrition. ____38____.
Furthermore, the environmental cost cannot be ignored. A recent report found that an increasing percentage of plastic waste discovered in the ocean came from takeout packaging. ____39____. Additionally, the plastic waste contributes significantly to carbon emissions and climate change.
Though the rise of food delivery may feed our society’s hunger for convenience, it will ultimately starve our communities of connection, health, and sustainability. ____40____. Once we choose home cooking or dining out more often, we can rebuild the social bonds and live in a healthier and greener way.
A. They bring more convenience to busy people
B. Very soon, our meals will arrive at our doorsteps
C. As a result, delivered food tends to be less healthy
D. So it is high time that we reflected on our eating habits
E. It has already become a serious threat to the sea creatures
F. On top of that, the rise in delivery food worsens the situation
G. To begin with, the convenience often comes at the cost of connection
B 37. G 38. C 39. E 40. D

根据上文“Nowadays, when we are hungry, we can place orders just with a few taps on our phones.(如今,饿了的时候,我们只需在手机上轻点几下就能下单)”可知,此处讲述点外卖这一事实,结合上下文点单后可快速获得餐食的逻辑,下单之后外卖很快会送到家门口。
根据下文“Online restaurants may offer more food options, but we may enjoy much less socialization: Workers simply drop off food, perhaps ring the doorbell, and leave. Without the need for human contact, we may gradually isolate
根据前文“A recent report found that an increasing percentage of plastic waste discovered in the ocean came from takeout packaging.(最近一份报告发现,海洋里越来越多的塑料垃圾来自外卖包装)”可知,此处讲述外卖带来的环境污染,海洋里有越来越多的塑料垃圾,因此推断E项“它已经对海洋生物构成严重威胁。”
根据下文“Once we choose home cooking or dining out more often, we can rebuild the social bonds and live in a healthier and greener way.(一旦我们更多选择在家做饭或者外出就餐,我们就能重建社交纽带,以更健康、环保的方式生活)”可知,此处呼吁大家反思饮食习惯。

分析句子可知,would rather do sth. than do sth.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Then I remembered Matt’s words.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After what felt like ages, the bears finally left.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then I remembered Matt’s words. I zipped the tent as quietly as possible and woke my wife up. She pulled the trembling children into her arms and covered their mouths in case they cried. I called Matt. Seconds later, he rushed out of his tent with a metal pot. He banged it violently and shouted at the top of his lungs, exactly as he had described to me in the afternoon. I grabbed a pan and joined him, yelling until my throat burned.
After what felt like ages, the bears finally left. Watching the last bear vanish into the forest, I collapsed onto the wet grass, trembling all over. It suddenly dawned on me that I had laughed off Matt’s advice hours earlier. Without his practical outdoor skills and calm courage, we might never have survived the encounter. That frightening night taught me a lesson I will never forget: In the wild, never take another person’s experience lightly, and never leave food near your tent.
