David had long been troubled by the litter covering his block on 171st Street between Broadway and Fort Washington Avenue. Trash gathered around dustbins, filled sidewalk tree plots, and left him feeling “powerless” to improve the place he called home. Rather than passively receiving that, he chose to begin with one simple act. Armed with trash bags and a grabber, David announced online that he would clean one New York City block every day for 100 days.
He started the project without knowing how others might respond. By the time he reached his 100th day, however, his individual effort had grown into something much larger. David discovered that his neighbors already cared deeply about their surroundings. They simply needed to see that positive change was possible. As his videos reached wider audiences, residents began joining him on the sidewalks. Together, they collected litter, encouraged city officials to devote more attention to street cleanliness, and improved the planting areas around neighborhood trees. Local businesses also made the effort, contributing plants and equipment.
David then expanded his mission from cleaning to beautification. He built small fences around tree plots, added fresh soil, and planted flowers. These colorful spaces gave residents something lovely to protect while providing a natural reminder to keep the sidewalks clean. “Litter can kill plants, but plants can also teach people not to litter,” David says.
His interest in gardening has even taken him into the mountains of upstate New York in search of native plants suitable for the neighborhood beds. David has invested about $ 2,000 of his own money in fencing, plants, and gardening materials for the tree plots on his block. Yet the project’s greatest resource has been the generosity it awakened in others. Neighbors, volunteers, and business owners have all offered their time, supplies, and encouragement.
The renewed sidewalks now represent more than a successful cleanup. They show what can happen when one person acts with hope and gives an entire community an opportunity to participate.
4. What drove David to start his cleaning project?
A. The influence of online communities. B. The desire to care for his neighborhood.
C. The determination to influence others. D. The invisible pressure from his neighbors.
5. Why did David commit himself to beautifying the sidewalks?
A. To develop the interest in gardening. B. To expand the use of gardening materials.
C. To teach people how to tend gardens. D. To remind people to keep the place clean.
6. Which words can best describe David?
A. Dedicated and generous. B. Active and modest.
C. Sensitive and ambitious. D. Cautious and strict.
7. What message does the text mainly convey?
A. Gardening is an effective way to reduce litter.
B. City officials should take more responsibilities.
C. Individual acts can inspire a community movement.
D. Social media is the key to solving city problems.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. C

The human hand is often regarded as the “peak of dexterity (灵巧)”, but there’s always room for improvement. In a new study, scientists have developed a flexible-fingered robotic device that puts human hand to shame.
The robot is the work of researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Set around a 16-centimeter palm, it’s armed with up to six fingers that can master 33 types of grasp actions to hold objects weighing up to 2 kilograms.
Unlike the human hand, the robotic hand is able to grasp objects from both sides of its palm. Equipped with highly flexible, multi-jointed fingers, the device can hold multiple objects at the same time. “There is no real limitation in the number of objects it can hold; if we need to hold more objects, we simply add more fingers,” Aude Billard, study author and head of the Learning Algorithms and Systems Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, said in a statement.
Most strikingly, it’s able to detach from its arm and move around. The hand can drop to the floor and move across surfaces, using its fingers as legs to walk like a spider, all while maintaining its ability to carry objects.
Although the robot may look like a high-tech vision from the future, the researchers say its form was actually inspired by the natural world. “Many organisms have evolved multifunctional arms and legs that smoothly switch between different functionalities like grasping and movement. For example, the octopus (章鱼) uses its flexible arms both to move across the seafloor and open shells, while in the insect world, the mantis (螳螂) use specialized arms and legs for movement and hunting,” Billard said.
The researchers expect a wide range of applications, from autonomous industrial robots to scientific exploration in challenging environments. Perhaps most interestingly, the design could even influence the next generation of artificial arms and legs.
8. What can we infer about the robotic hand from paragraph 3?
A. It can bear unlimited object weight. B. Its grasping capacity can be upgraded.
C. It finishes tasks with the same action. D. The maximum number of its fingers is 6.
9. What does the underlined word “detach” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Separate. B. Stretch. C. Distinguish. D. Hang.
10. Why does the author mention the octopus and mantis?
A. To prove that animals are more flexible. B. To compare their intelligence with robots’.
C. To explain the prospect of the new device. D. To show the inspiration source of the robot.
11. What do researchers think of the robotic hand’s future?
A. It will get rid of human control. B. It will be simplified for easier use.
C. It will be applied in multiple fields. D. It will replace human hands in daily life.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. C

On January 15, 2022, the undersea volcano Hunga Tonga in the South Pacific blew its top. The massive eruption — the largest and highest underwater eruption ever recorded by modern instruments — could be heard 1,200 miles away in New Zealand and sent ash an extremely unusual 36 miles into the air. In many, many ways, the eruption was extraordinary.
Now, more than four years after that impressive volcanic display, a new study in the journal Nature Communications details a completely surprising new fact about Hunga Tonga eruption: It cleaned up after itself. Well, at least a little bit.
Typically, volcanoes spill tons of methane (甲烷) during an eruption. Methane is 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas, so you really don’t want this stuff reaching the atmosphere. But it turns out that the volcano did a good thing by cleaning up at least some of its methane emissions (排放) itself. Scientists discovered this rare phenomenon using data gathered from a satellite.
What they discovered is that the rising black smoke contained a lot of formaldehyde (甲醛) — a gas that forms when methane is destroyed in the atmosphere. “Because formaldehyde only exists for a few hours, this showed that the cloud must have been destroying methane continuously for more than a week,” Maarten van Herpen, lead author of the study, said.
The engine behind this natural clean-up process is sea water, which was lifted into the sky during the eruption. Once in the atmosphere, this salt — along with plentiful volcanic ash — interacted with sunlight, turning the mixture into a chemical substance that effectively broke down methane.
The natural process shows that humans might attempt to remove methane from the atmosphere using a similar method. “It’s an obvious idea for industry to try to copy this natural phenomenon — but only if it can be proven to be safe and effective,” Johnson, a co-author of the study, said. “Above all, our satellite method could offer a way to help figure out how humans might slow global warming.”
12. What amazed scientists about Hunga Tonga eruption?
A. It released methane during eruption. B. It produced massive ash clouds worldwide.
C. It removed part of the methane it released. D. Its explosion could be heard in distant lands.
13. What can we know about formaldehyde?
A. It is a short-lived gas. B. It can destroy methane.
C. It can clean the smoke. D. It is rare in the atmosphere.
14. What is the most important value of the study according to Johnson?
A. Improving the industrial production. B. Saving human resource for research.
C. Preventing air pollution in advance. D. Helping to reduce greenhouse gases.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Methane: A Powerful Greenhouse Gas B. A New Method to Slow Global Warming
C. This Volcano Is Cleaning up Its Own Mess D. The Largest Underwater Eruption in History
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. C

We all have seen a student athlete before: a student who also plays a sport. Some people admire them; others judge them. There are so many stereotypes (刻板印象) that come with being a student athlete. ____16____
One of the biggest stereotypes is that student athletes are just “stupid players” rather than serious students. This stereotype often sees us as people who should only focus on our sport and not have other passions, much like Troy from “High School Musical.” ____17____ While that can be true for some, there is so much more to a student athlete than just playing a sport.
____18____ Coaches pressure us to be better than their expectations within the sport. Parents expect us to succeed both academically and athletically. And we put expectations on ourselves for trying to build a future beyond sports. Between academic priorities, outside expectations, demanding schedules, and plans for a future career, student athletes can easily feel overwhelmed (不知所措的).
Although we choose to play a sport in college, it’s also an opportunity for many of us that we can’t easily pass. Playing a sport can provide scholarships and personal growth. ____19____ Actually, many care about their education and future goals outside of sports.
So, the stereotype that student athletes only care about their sport is unfair and often untrue. Sports are a major part of our lives, but many of us still work hard academically and personally every day. I cannot speak for every student athlete. ____20____ So, the next time you see a student athlete maintaining a 4.0 GPA, understand that those accomplishments required an enormous amount of discipline, sacrifice, and hard work.
A. They perform well under pressure.
B. Not every student athlete only focuses on athletics.
C. This is not to say that non-athletes don’t struggle, either.
D. Student athletes often face more pressure than people realize.
E. As a student athlete myself, I know how damaging that can be.
F. But I know many of them put in an incredible amount of effort.
G. Some people also believe that sports are an easy way to get through school.
【答案】16. E 17. G 18. D 19. B 20. F

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Nathan had been a runner since he was ten, his legs carrying him through every hallway, every field, every dream he’d ever had. By senior year, he was the fastest boy in his school, and the regional championship was only three weeks away. He trained every morning before sunrise, his breath forming clouds in the cold air, his footsteps echoing against the empty track.
One afternoon, during a practice, Nathan felt a sharp pain shoot through his right knee. He collapsed, and the pain didn’t fade. The school doctor examined him and shook his head. “Stress fracture (骨折),” he said. “No running for at least two months.” Nathan’s chest tightened. The championship would be long gone by then.
For days, Nathan sat in the stands, watching his teammates train. He felt useless, like a car with no engine. One evening, as he was leaving the track, he noticed a freshman boy sitting alone on the bench, staring at his own shoes. The boy, Marcus, had joined the team only a month earlier, but he’d never spoken to anyone. Nathan remembered his own first year — how lost he’d felt, how much he’d wanted someone to notice him.
The next morning, Nathan arrived at the track before sunrise, not to run, but to sit beside Marcus. “You’re here early,” he said. Marcus looked up, surprised. “I … I don’t know if I’m doing it right,” he admitted. Nathan smiled, “Let me watch.”
Over the next two weeks, Nathan became Marcus’s unofficial coach. He corrected his steps, encouraged him, and celebrated every small improvement. Marcus grew faster, more confident, and the team began to notice. Nathan felt a strange satisfaction — not the thrill of winning, but something quieter, deeper.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The day of the championship arrived.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After the race, Marcus found Nathan in the stands.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The day of the championship arrived. Nathan sat in the stands, watching Marcus line up at the starting blocks. The gun fired, and Marcus took off. Nathan held his breath. Marcus ran like he had something to prove. Nathan watched, his heart pounding as if he were the one racing. Marcus crossed the finish line in second place, his face shining with disbelief. The crowd cheered. Nathan jumped to his feet, cheering louder than anyone. He hadn’t won a medal, but he felt a pride he’d never known before.
After the race, Marcus found Nathan in the stands. “I couldn’t have done it without you,” he said, breathless. Nathan shook his head, “You did it yourself. I just … showed up.” Marcus smiled, “That’s exactly what I needed.” Nathan looked down at his knee, then back at Marcus’s shining face. He realized that running wasn’t just about crossing the finish line first — it was about who you brought with you. And sometimes, helping someone else win felt better than winning yourself.

D

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
