Peter loves baseball. Last summer, he helped to coach a school baseball team. When he first watched the team of 12-year-olds play baseball, his first impressions (印象) were not really positive.
Some players often left as soon as they started losing. Other players paid too much attention to all their mistakes during the game or preferred to dig up the grass when they weren’t in the play. A lot of boys threw their baseball bats when they lost the catch.
While their baseball skills improved over time with more practice, there were still problems. The team had a long way to go. For example, some boys were hard on those who made mistakes. Instead of being supportive or encouraging, they blamed (责怪) each other.
Peter started one-on-one talks with each player to discuss things that he had noticed. Some were about skills like holding the bat up higher or opening their eyes when they were making a catch. But most were about staying positive and supporting each other.
Things began to change slowly. The boys began to take the duties for their play instead of blaming others for mistakes. They stayed positive even when losing. The team culture was improving.
Players began encouraging each other, high-fiving and supporting teammates. Peter was especially pleased to see some of the boys taking leadership (领导) roles and having their own one-on-one talks with their teammates.
Peter didn’t think he made huge progress in teaching the boys how to throw, catch or hit better, but he was pleased that their conversations around the character led to something positive. Although the team still lost games, their character became stronger. Next season, their character will be tested again.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale.
Researchers said in the study some of the results were expected. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who did not take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growth of teenagers.” the study said, “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic development, the new study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
8. What were the students asked to do first in the study?
A. They drew pictures to show their daily life at school.
B. They talked about their mental health with researchers.
C. They reported how often they joined after-school activities.
D. They answered questions about their after-school screen time.
9. According to the study, which of the following is true about teenage girls?
A. They were more likely to feel satisfied with their daily life.
B. They showed a very low rate of joining after-school activities.
C. They were less likely to have higher levels of anxiety than boys.
D. They were more seriously affected by too much screen time mentally.
10. What is the purpose of the numbers (46% and 67%) used in paragraph 4?
A. To prove that students with no activities have no screen time.
B. To challenge the accuracy of previous research on screen time.
C. To support the claim that high screen time is widespread among teens.
D. To argue that screens are more engaging than after-school activities.
11. What can we learn from the findings of the study?
A. Screen time should be completely avoided.
B. After-school activities are important for teenagers’ mental health.
C. Most Canadian teenagers spend too much time on sports.
D. Girls are more mentally unhealthy than boys.
D
May I have your attention, please? I’ll try and be quick, as I probably only have about 47 seconds before your mind starts wandering (走神). That, according to psychologist Dr Gloria Mark, is now your average attention span (注意力持续时间), based on her latest study of people’s use of screens in the workplace. Of course, this figure has its limits. As other psychologists have argued, your concentration can vary so much, the very idea of an “average” attention span is almost meaningless. Because of this, there isn’t even scientific agreement on how to measure focus.
Nevertheless, it’s likely your attention span is decreasing. As one recent survey suggests, nearly half the population nowadays feels as if theirs is worse than it was. With the ever-present pull of our emails and social media, it’s easy to see why.
Of course, we can silence our phone notifications (通知) and put ton noise-canceling headphones. However, even when we have done all that, there’s still the enemy within to deal with. Unknowingly, you are “interrupting” yourself all day long, according to Mark. Even while reading this, you may have gotten the sudden desire to look something up online, check your emails or do something else. “It’s something we do without realizing,” said Mark.
One solution to this is to pay attention to your body clock. Lining up your most mentally taxing tasks with your natural peaks (顶峰) of focus is key to concentration, says Mark. Her research has found that, on average, these high points occur around 10 a.m. in the morning and around 2-3 p.m. in the afternoon. There are differences around these times, depending on whether you are more of a morning person or a night person. “If a person is an early type, their peak focus would be earlier—before 10 a.m.,” explains Mark. “And if they are a late type, their peak focus will be later.”
12. What is some psychologists’ attitude toward the 47-second average attention span figure?
A. It is of little significance.
B. It provides strong evidence for their study.
C. It helps measure people’s focus scientifically.
D. It proves people’s minds wander very easily.
13. Why do many people feel their attention span is becoming shorter nowadays?
A. They spend too much time doing surveys at work.
B. Electronic messages and social media keep drawing them.
C. They often keep silent when using their mobile phones.
D. They refuse to wear noise-canceling headphones at home.
14. The underlined phrase “mentally taxing” in the last paragraph probably means .
A. bringing great joy B. causing serious physical pain
C. taking little thinking time D. requiring much mental effort
15. What can we learn from Dr Gloria Mark’s research findings?
A. People’s focus peaks vary with their personal living habits.
B. Night-type people have no obvious focus peaks in the daytime.
C. Morning people’s focus peaks fall after 10 a.m.
D. People share exactly the same focus peak time.

Last summer, I joined a two-week long art camp. At first, I was nervous as I didn’t know anyone there. Among the students, there was a girl named Maya. She was always surrounded by a group of friends, chatting and laughing loudly. I was too shy to approach her.
One day during a painting class, I was struggling with my brushwork. Maya happened to pass by and noticed my trouble. She pulled up a chair beside me and patiently showed me some painting techniques. Her kind smile and warm words made me feel at ease immediately. From then on, we became good friends. We spent every day at the camp together, sharing our dreams and secrets.
As the end of the art camp approached, everyone was busy preparing for the final exhibition. Maya and I decided to create a joint painting that combined our different styles. However, just two days before the exhibition, a huge argument broke out between us. We had different ideas about how to complete the painting and neither of us was willing to compromise (妥协). We ended up storming off in anger, leaving the half-finished painting on the painting stand.
That night, I lay in bed, tossing and turning I kept thinking about our friendship and how stupid our argument was. I realized that friendship was more important than winning an argument.

根据第二段第一句“Some players often left as soon as they started losing.(一些球员一输就开始退出)”可知,有一些球员一开始输就会放弃。故选A。
根据第四段中的“But most were about staying positive and supporting each other.(但大多数都是关于保持积极和相互支持)”可知,Peter的一对一对话主要重点是保持积极的态度。
根据第六段“Players began encouraging each other, high-fiving and supporting teammates. Peter was especially pleased to see some of the boys taking leadership (领导) roles and having their own one-on-one talks with their teammates.(球员们开始互相鼓励,击掌并支持队友。彼得特别高兴地看到一些男孩扮演了领导角色,并与队友进行了一对一的交谈)”可知,为了提高球队表现,球员互相鼓励支持彼此。故选C。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第四段“Peter started one-on-one talks with each player to discuss things that he had noticed. Some were about skills like holding the bat up higher or opening their eyes when they were making a catch. But most were about staying positive and supporting each other.(彼得开始与每个球员进行一对一的谈话,讨论他注意到的事情。有些是关于技巧,比如把球棒举得更高,或者在接球时睁开眼睛。但大多数都是关于保持积极和相互支持)”和第五段“Things began to change slowly. The boys began to take the duties for their play instead of blaming others for mistakes. They stayed positive even when losing. The team culture was improving.(事情开始慢慢地发生变化。男孩们开始为自己的比赛负起责任,而不是因为错误而责备别人。即使输了,他们也保持乐观。团队文化正在改善)”可知,本文主要讲的是彼得(Peter)去年夏天协助指导一支学校棒球队的经历,核心在于展现他如何通过关注球员的性格品质与心态,而非单纯提升球技,推动球队文化发生积极转变,因此B选项“The Real Progress: Stronger Character(真正的进步:更坚强的性格)”可作为最好的标题,故选B。
C
D 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第二段中的“The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV or something else.(学生们首先回答了关于课后屏幕使用时间的问题,包括他们看电视或做其他事情的时长)”可知,在这项研究中,学生首先被要求完成课后屏幕时间使用情况的相关作答。
根据第三段中的“And girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.(女生在心理健康消极指标上的得分会更高,因为此前的研究已发现,与男生相比,女生的焦虑水平往往更高)”可知,女生本身的心理健康消极水平更高,结合研究“屏幕时间过长与消极心理健康状态相关”的核心结论,过多的屏幕时间会对女生的心理健康造成更严重的影响。
根据第四段中的“What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who did not take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.(研究人员表示,值得关注的是,即便在参加课外活动的学生群体中,仍有46%的人使用电子屏幕时长超过建议的两小时。与此同时,没有参加课外活动的学生里,67%的人屏幕使用时间也超过两小时。综合来看,这表明青少年群体普遍存在屏幕使用时长偏高的问题)”可知,文中列出这两组百分比数据,是为了通过不同群体的屏幕时长超标占比,支撑青少年中屏幕时间过长现象十分普遍这一结论。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段““The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growth of teenagers.” the study said, “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic development, the new study shows their importance for good mental health results.”(研究指出:“研究结果表明,课后活动对青少年的快乐成长具有重要价值。虽然以往的研究已证实课后活动对社交和学业发展的重要性,但这项新研究显示了其对良好心理健康结果的重要作用。”)”可知,课后活动对青少年的心理健康至关重要。
A 13. B 14. D 15. A
根据第一段中“Of course, this figure has its limits. As other psychologists have argued your concentration can vary so much, the very idea of an “average” attention span is almost meaningless.(当然,这个数字也有其局限性。正如其他心理学家所主张的,你的专注力差异如此之大,所谓“平均”注意力持续时间这一概念几乎毫无意义。)”可知,其他心理学家认为47秒这一平均注意力持续时间数据意义甚微。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“As one recent survey suggests, nearly half the population nowadays feels as if theirs is worse than it was. With the ever-present pull of our emails and social media, it’s easy to see why.(正如最近一项调查所表明的,如今近一半的人感觉自己的注意力比过去更差。由于电子邮件和社交媒体无时无刻的吸引,原因不难理解。)”可知,许多人感觉注意力变短是因为电子信息和社交媒体不断吸引他们。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“One solution to this is to pay attention to your body clock. Lining up your most mentally taxing tasks with your natural peaks (顶峰) of focus is key to concentration, says Mark.(解决这一问题的一个方法是关注你的生物钟。马克说,把你最mentally taxing的任务与你注意力的自然高峰对齐,是集中注意力的关键。)”可知,画线短语“mentally taxing”与“natural peaks of focus(注意力的自然高峰)”相搭配,说明这类任务需要消耗大量脑力,应安排在专注力最强时完成,故其意为“需要大量脑力劳动的”。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“There are differences around these times, depending on whether you are more of a morning person or a night person. “If a person is an early type, their peak focus would be earlier—before 10a.m.,” explains Mark. “And if they are a late type, their peak focus will be later.”(这些时间点存在差异,取决于你更像早起型还是晚睡型的人。马克解释说:“如果一个人是早起型,他们的专注力高峰会更早——在上午10点之前。而如果他们是晚睡型,他们的专注力高峰会更晚。”)”可知,人们的专注力高峰随个人生活习惯而变化。
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,共12.5分)

Taking notes is important. You don’t need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he or she writes on the blackboard, or any special fact you think you might need for a test. ____17____. This way it will help you learn more effectively by actually thinking about what you are writing.
Don’t skip school. You will be missing out on stuff. ____18____. However, you will have more work and you have missed lectures and in-class movies. Also, try not to be late for class. It’s most likely that your teacher won’t appreciate it and you will get yourself behind.

C. Write in your own words
D. When you do poorly in your study
E. It is true that you could make up the work

G 17. C 18. E 19. F 20. B
上文“Pay attention to everything the teacher says. I can’t stress how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you. Take part in class discussions if you have something worthwhile to add.(要专心听老师讲的每一句话。
上文“You don’t need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he or she writes on the blackboard, or any special fact you think you might need for a test.(你不需要把老师说的每一个字都记下来,但要记下老师写在黑板上的内容,以及任何你认为考试可能会用到的重要知识点)”提到无需记下老师说的每一个字,只需记录黑板内容和考点,后文“This way it will help you learn more effectively by actually thinking about what you are writing.(这样一来,通过主动思考自己所写的内容,你能更高效地学习)”则说明这样做能通过思考所写内容更高效学习。
前文“You will be missing out on stuff.(翘课会让你错过很多重要内容)”指出翘课会错过内容,后文“However, you will have more work and you have missed lectures and in-class movies.(但你会面临更多的学习任务,而且还错过了老师的讲课内容和课堂播放的影片)”用“However”转折,强调翘课后会有更多作业,且错过讲课和课堂影片。
下文“then teachers will be less willing to help you with problems or offer you extra credit. The same goes for the lazy attitude.(那么老师可能就不太愿意帮你解决问题,也不会给你额外的加分机会。懒惰的态度也是如此)”提到老师会不太愿意帮助你,且补充说明懒惰态度。选项F“如果你抱着“我不在乎学习”的态度”是对不良态度的具体举例:不在乎学习属于负面态度,与后文“老师不愿帮忙”构成因果关系,同时与后文“lazy attitude”形成并列,共同说明不良态度的危害,符合逻辑。
【20题详解】
空处为段首句,为本段主要内容。根据本段内容“There is no shame in needing some help. If you don’t understand, ask someone. Read your textbook and notes, and then if that fails, seek help.

此处考查固定结构find it +形容词+to do sth.,it作形式宾语,真正的宾语是后面的动词不定式,所以此处为to keep。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, I decided to apologize to Maya. With a pounding heart, I walked towards the studio where she was. When I opened the door, I saw Maya sitting in front of our unfinished painting, looking sad. Her eyes were red as if she had been crying. Seeing me, she stood up nervously. Before she could say anything, I blurted out, “Maya, I’m so sorry about yesterday. Our friendship means everything to me, and I don’t want a silly argument to ruin it.”
Paragraph 2:
Tears filled Maya’s eyes as she rushed towards me and gave me a big hug. “I’m sorry too,” she sobbed. “I was just being stubborn. Our friendship is far more precious than any painting.” We both laughed through our tears. Then, side by side, we sat down and started working on the painting again. This time, we listened to each other’s ideas, compromised, and added our unique touches. When the exhibition opened, our painting received high praise. But more importantly, our friendship became even stronger, and we knew that true friendship could overcome any obstacle.
