Unit 5 Period 4 Apply for a summer job
FAFSC(Friends of Animals and Safari Camp)招暑期营员助手的广告、Kelly Xu的求职信、Kelly Xu的简历。
Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Part Ⅰ Lead-in — A Summer Job in Wuhan (5 minutes)(铺垫难点②)
Teacher's Activity: Ask students: 'If you could take any summer job in Wuhan, what would it be?' Collect 3-4 answers. Then show the Yellow Crane Tower volunteer ad and say: 'This is a real ad. Today we'll learn to write a cover letter that gets you the interview.'
Part Ⅰ Lead-in: A Summer Job in Wuhan
Talk with your partner: if you could take any summer job in Wuhan, what would it be? Why?
Job
Who might want it?
What does it need?
English guide at Yellow Crane Tower
Museum volunteer at Hubei Museum
Camp counsellor at a summer camp in Wuhan
Step 2: Part Ⅱ While-reading — Read the three texts (10 minutes)(铺垫重点①)
Teacher's Activity: Give 6 minutes to read the three texts (FAFSC ad, Kelly's letter, Kelly's CV) silently. Then fill in the tables in Activity 2 together.
Part Ⅱ While-reading
Read the three textbook texts and finish the tasks.
Activity 1 What type of texts are they?
Text 1 is a ______. Text 2 is a ______. Text 3 is a ______.
Activity 2 Read for information.
Text 1 — the FAFSC job ad:
Item
Your notes
Job name
Responsibilities
Requirements
How to apply
Text 2 — Kelly's cover letter. Divide into 3 parts:
Part
Main idea
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Text 3 — Kelly's CV. Make a quick mind map on skills / experience / personality.
Step 3: Part Ⅱ While-reading (continued) — Analysing why Kelly fits (12 minutes)(突破重点①)
Teacher's Activity: Walk through Activity 3 (discussion) and Activity 4 (language features). On the board, list the sentence frames students can steal.
Activity 3 Discussion: Is Kelly a good match? Why?
Tick the requirements Kelly meets:
FAFSC requires…
Kelly has it? (✓/✗)
Good English
Organised & teamwork
Love Chinese & international culture
Experience with animals
Friendly, outgoing
Like young people from other countries
Activity 4 Language features of a cover letter.
Part
Purpose
Useful sentences
Part 1: Opening
Show you want the job
I'm writing to apply for… / I'm writing in response to…
Part 2: Body
Show why you fit and why you want this job
My English is at… level. / I have experience in… / I'm… (personality).
Part 3: Closing
Ask for reply
I look forward to hearing from you. / Thank you for your consideration.
Step 4: Part Ⅲ Practice — Write your own cover letter (15 minutes)(运用重点②,检验难点①②)
Teacher's Activity: Show the Yellow Crane Tower ad again. Give students 3 minutes to brainstorm their own Wuhan experiences, then 10 minutes to draft, then 2 minutes peer review.
Part Ⅲ Practice: Apply for the Yellow Crane Tower summer guide
Volunteers Wanted — Yellow Crane Tower Summer English Guide
Item
Detail
Job
Summer English guide at Yellow Crane Tower
Responsibilities
Give English tours to foreign visitors; help with cultural events
Requirements
Good spoken English; outgoing; love Chinese poetry; know Wuhan well; available 2+ weeks in July/August
Apply by
Send CV + cover letter to hr@yellowcranetower.com by June 30
Task: Write a cover letter of about 80-100 words. Follow the 3-part structure.
• Part 1: say you want the job.
• Part 2: give 2-3 reasons that match the requirements above.
• Part 3: thank them and ask for a reply.
Use a real Wuhan story — Hubu Alley, Hubei Museum, your grandma's poem recitation, your exchange-student tour, your English corner — don't invent a CV you don't have.
Activity 1 Draft (10 min).
Dear Hiring Manager,
I'm Li Hua, a Senior 2 student from Wuhan. I'm writing to apply for ______.
I believe I'm a good fit. ______
I would appreciate an interview. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Activity 2 Peer review (2 min). Exchange letters. Tick what your partner did:
Item
☐ done?
Opening states the job clearly
Body matches 2+ job requirements
Uses at least one real Wuhan detail
Closing is polite and asks for reply
Self-check after class: ☐ Used short, clear sentences ☐ No "I am a good student" filler ☐ No grammar mistakes
(3 minutes)
Teacher's Activity: Ask students to list 3 bullet points for their CV (skills / experience / personality). Full CV is homework.
Part Ⅳ
Pick up your own CV in 3 bullet points (one for skills, one for experience, one for personality). We'll assemble the full CV after class.
五、Homework
1. Polish your cover letter based on peer review.
2. Write a one-page CV (name, contact, education, skills, experience, personality).
3. Be ready to role-play a job interview in the next lesson.
六、Blackboard Design
UNIT 5 APPLY FOR A SUMMER JOB
COVER LETTER: Open (I want the job) → Body (why I fit) → Close (thank you)
GOLDEN RULE: Match the job, don't just talk about yourself.
MATCHING CHECKLIST: ☐ What does the job want? ☐ What do I have?
2. 有学生把求职信写成了作文——"Nowadays more and more students take summer jobs…"
Part Ⅰ Lead-in
Part Ⅱ While-reading

A job advertisement.
A cover letter (application letter).
A CV (résumé).
Activity 2 — Text 1:
Job name: Summer camp helpers (FAFSC)
Responsibilities: attend to hundreds of students from all over the world; supervise and help in activities.

Part Ⅲ Practice
Sample A(优秀范文 · 江城视角)
Dear Hiring Manager,
I'm Li Hua, a Senior 2 student from Wuhan. I'm writing to apply for the summer English guide volunteer at Yellow Crane Tower.
I believe I'm a good fit. My English is at intermediate-advanced level. I passed the FCE exam and host our school's English corner. I live in Wuchang, ten minutes' walk from the Tower, and I grew up listening to my grandfather reciting Cui Hao's poem. Last summer, I showed a group of exchange students from London around Hubu Alley and the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, and they loved it. I'm outgoing, patient, and genuinely enjoy meeting people from other countries.
I would greatly appreciate an interview. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Sample B(待提升范文)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I'm writing to apply for the job. I think I am a good student. I study hard and I like English. I have many friends. I hope you can give me the job. Thank you.
Yours,
Li Hua
问题:没说申请什么岗位、没对应任何JD要求、空泛"I am a good student"、结尾没有期待回复。 I'm writing to apply for…";Body补1-2条具体经历;结尾加"Thank you for your consideration.")
Part Ⅳ
参考:Skills — English (FCE), calligraphy, PowerPoint; Experience — Hubei Museum volunteer 2024, English corner host; Personality — outgoing, patient, organised.)
