Unit 4 Sharing — Period 4 Make a speech about China's aid to other countries Teaching Plan Unit 4 Sharing Period 4 Make a speech about China's aid to other countries (What if…? / Today, I want to…)。 2. Teaching Procedures Step 1: Lead-in — From Wuhan to the World (5 minutes)(铺垫难点②) Teacher's Activity: Show two photos on PPT — 2020 medical workers from across China marching into Wuhan at the height of the lockdown, and the 2022 opening of the Padma Bridge in Bangladesh built by engineers from China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group (Wuhan). Ask the class: "In 2020, the whole country helped Wuhan. Today, Wuhan helps the world. What Wuhan-to-the-world stories do you know?" Collect two or three answers on the board. Part Ⅰ Lead-in: From Wuhan to the World Look at the two photos. Talk with your partner: what do you know about Wuhan reaching out to the world? 2020: China helped Wuhan Today: Wuhan helps the world 42,000+ medical workers from across China came to Wuhan Wuhan engineers built the Padma Bridge in Bangladesh (opened June 2022) Medical supplies and support poured in Hubei medical teams (from Tongji / Xiehe hospitals) have worked in Algeria since 1963 Wuhan-made ventilators, test kits went abroad during COVID 【设计说明】两张照片对撞——一张是2020年全国援汉,一张是武汉人在孟加拉建桥。 Step 2: Part Ⅱ While-reading (8 minutes)(铺垫重点①) Teacher's Activity: Tell students to turn to the speech transcript. Give 5 minutes to read Zhang Bingbing's speech silently. Then check the five questions orally. Part Ⅱ While-reading Read the speech transcript and answer the questions. 1. What are some examples of the work that Chinese people do to help others overseas? 2. Why was Bingbing upset when her mother went to Tanzania? 3. What are some of the problems people face in Tanzania? 4. What are two things that Bingbing's mother is helping with? 5. Why is this work worth it? Step 3: Part Ⅲ Analysing speech features (12 minutes)(突破重点①) Teacher's Activity: Ask students to reread the transcript in 6 minutes, focusing on how Bingbing opens, supports and ends her speech. Walk through Activity 1-4 together. Part Ⅲ Analysing: Features of the speech Activity 1 Fill in the blanks. The speech is about Chinese people in other countries. The writer's main question is: "Is her work ?" Her mother is working as a in Tanzania, Africa. Activity 2 Figure out the structure of the speech. Part What does Bingbing do here? Opening (1st para.) Body (middle paras.) Ending (last para.) Activity 3 Answer the questions. 1. What is the key rhetorical question in this speech? 2. What is the answer? 3. Which does the speaker use to make her point? (tick all that apply) ☐ a case study ☐ a hypothetical example ☐ a joke ☐ a personal story ☐ facts and data ☐ analysis of causes 4. How did Bingbing's feelings change, and what caused the change? 5. How does the speech end? Activity 4 Summarise the speech pattern. Structure Language feature Way of writing Function Rhetorical questions What if…? / Does it really matter? / Why should…? Describe a familiar phenomenon, then ask an attention-grabbing question Hook the audience Answers to the questions I had the same question myself. / But for me… Personal story / examples / data / citations Answer the question with evidence Ending Today, I want to relay to you that… 要跟学生交个底:教材范文结尾严格说不是祈使句的call to action,是"答案+愿景"("Yes, it is worth it. We are global citizens…"),我们写的时候可以往"Let us…" Step 4: Part Ⅳ Writing — Preparing (5 minutes)(突破重点②,铺垫难点①②) Teacher's Activity: Brainstorm Wuhan-to-the-world stories on the board. Ask students to pick one story they can connect to, and find the rhetorical question, the personal story and the call to action. Part Ⅳ Writing task — Preparing In groups, pick ONE Wuhan-to-the-world story and fill in the planner. Element Your notes Rhetorical question opening What if we told you a bridge in Bangladesh was built by engineers from Wuhan? / ? Personal story (yours or someone you know) Fact / data to support it Padma Bridge opened June 2022; cut crossing from hours to minutes. / Hubei medical teams in Algeria since 1963. / 42,000+ medical workers came to Wuhan in 2020. Step 5: Part Ⅳ Writing — Draft & Peer review (12 minutes)(运用重点②,检验难点①②) Teacher's Activity: Give 8 minutes to draft. Walk around and help stuck students. Then 4 minutes peer review using the tick checklist. Collect 2-3 drafts to read aloud in class. Part Ⅳ Writing task — Draft Task: Write a short speech "From Wuhan, with love" (about 100-120 words). Use a rhetorical question to open, include one Wuhan-to-the-world story, end with a call to action, and make sure your Wuhan story is clearly connected to your point. Activity 1 Draft (8 min). Use a real personal memory — don't invent a walk across the Padma Bridge; use a Wuhan moment you actually know. • Opening: Rhetorical question — What if …? / Did you know …? • Body: Personal story + one fact / number • Ending: Call to action — So let us … / Today, I want to say … What if I told you that ? I still remember . Today, I want to call on all of us to . Activity 2 Peer review (4 min). Exchange drafts. Tick what your partner did: Item ☐ done? Rhetorical question opening Personal story / fact Call to action ending Wuhan story clearly told Self-check after class: ☐ Used short, spoken sentences (not written-long ones) ☐ Read it aloud — does it sound like a speech? (3 minutes) Teacher's Activity: Ask students to read the prompt and outline the email in 3 minutes. The full email is for homework. Homework 1. Polish your speech based on peer review. Read it aloud to yourself — if you run out of breath, the sentence is too long. 2. Finish the Li Hua email to Jim (80 words). 3. Be ready to deliver your speech in the next lesson. 六、Blackboard Design Unit 4 Sharing — A speech about China's aid SPEECH STRUCTURE: Hook (rhetorical Q) → Story + Evidence → Call to action KEY SENTENCE: We received bridges; now we help build them. Today, I want to ask every one of us to ______." 2. Part Ⅱ While-reading 1. Chinese workers building roads in the Congo, a port in Pakistan, railways in Panama, an airport in Sri Lanka; Chinese miners, oil workers, agricultural experts, mechanics and doctors in nearly every corner of the world. 2. Because Bingbing's mother was also her best friend. They talked and spent leisure time together, and except for school and work, they were never apart. 3. Dangerous diseases and the lack of a cardiac (heart) hospital. 4. Helping build a cardiac hospital; doing circuit visits to rural villages to provide medical treatment. 5. Because it shows we are global citizens interested in world stability, feel responsible for others, and are ready to build a community with a shared future for mankind. Everyone deserves a fair chance in life. Part Ⅲ Analysing Activity 1: volunteering in other countries; worth; volunteer consultant Activity 2: Part What does Bingbing do here? Opening Uses a rhetorical question — "Is her work worth it?" — to hook the audience. Body Tells a personal story about her mother; lists problems in Tanzania; describes the two projects (cardiac hospital, rural visits); uses data and contrast. Ending Declares the answer (yes, it is worth it) and states a shared vision of global citizenship — we are global citizens, we share a future. Activity 3: 1. Is her work worth it? 2. Yes — to the people she helps, and to us as well, because it shows we are global citizens ready to build a community with a shared future for mankind. 3. A personal story (her mother) + facts and data (projects in Tanzania). 4. She changed from upset/upset-about-her-mother-leaving to proud and convinced, after seeing the difference her mother made. 5. A declaration of the answer plus a shared vision of global citizenship. What if I told you the busiest new bridge in Bangladesh was built by engineers from Wuhan? The Padma Bridge opened in 2022. Before that, people and goods crossed the river by ferry, sometimes waiting for days. Now the crossing takes ten minutes. I once walked across the Wuhan Yangtze Bridge on a windy spring night, never imagining that engineers from my city were laying a second "lifeline" half a world away. China's aid is not just money on a table — it is a bridge, a hospital, a doctor staying two years in a village far from home. So the next time you cross the Yangtze, think of the Padma. We once received bridges; today we help build them. Thank you. We once received bridges; today we help build them.") Sample B(待提升范文) Good morning. China gives a lot of money to other countries. We build roads and schools. It is good to help people. Some countries need our help. I think we should keep helping. Thank you. 建议:加一个"What if…?" Teacher's comments & rubric(教师评语量规) Sample A:修辞问题"What if…?" We once received bridges; today we help build them." China helps…it is good",没有修辞问题、没有具体数据、没有结尾号召。 Today, I want to…"。 Dear Jim, Glad to receive your email. I'd like to share one volunteer experience of mine. Last summer, our class went to a nearby primary school in rural Huangpi to teach English to left-behind children. We prepared picture books and games, and spent three Saturday mornings with them. The kids could not speak a word of English at first, but by the end they were singing "You are my sunshine" with us. The experience set me thinking. A few hours a week may seem small, but for those children it means someone cares. I will keep volunteering. What about you? Looking forward to your reply.
