Standing at the top of the Eiffel Tower, almost everyone looks down. Tourists push their way to peer at Paris’s famous landmarks. Yet those in the know gaze upwards: they climb to the highest public platform to view not the metropolis, but a mosaic (镶嵌画).
Invader, the Frenchman behind the mosaic, is one of the most productive street artists in the world. He has planted more than 1,500 works across Paris alone. There are thousands more such “invasions” in over 80 cities around the world, from New York to Tokyo. His works have been attached to the Hollywood sign and a ski lift in the Swiss Alps; they lie at the bottom of the ocean near Cancún and orbit Earth in the International Space Station.
Like any successful intruder and serious street artist, his identity is a secret. That hasn’t stopped him from gaining fans. If you know a child in a city that has been invaded, chances are you’ve heard of FlashInvaders, an app on which you score points for finding the mosaics. The game has more than 550,000 players.
Invader uses the ancient practice of mosaic to create figures inspired by video games. Each piece acts as a “perfect pixel (像素)”, which makes the mosaics look like digital images. The pixels also mean the images can be scanned on a phone, a bit like a QR code, to play FlashInvaders. The aim of the game is not only to interact with fans, but also to spark curiosity and urban exploration. Searching for the mosaics takes you to parts of cities you wouldn’t normally see.
The app stands out because it encourages people to “look at their environment in a different way”. Mobile games are often criticised for gluing people to their phones, but this one teaches you to take notice of the world around you. Whether on a little-known street or at the top of the Eiffel Tower, it’s always worth looking up.
4. Why does the author mention tourists looking down from the Eiffel Tower?
A. To introduce an artwork. B. To judge tourists’ behavior.
C. To describe a common sight. D. To explain the tower’s design.
5. What do the locations in paragraph 2 show about Invader’s works?
A. They have varied patterns. B. They focus on landmarks.
C. They stay within city streets. D. They enjoy great popularity.
6. What role do the “pixels” play in Invader’s art?
A. They blend art with interaction.
B. They make the mosaics hard to recognize.
C. They are mainly used to save time.
D. They imitate QR codes in appearance.
7. What can the app contribute to according to the last paragraph?
A. Personalized guided tours. B. Proper use of mobile games.
C. Better knowledge of architecture. D. Sharpened real-world awareness.

What do social climbers and gossipers (爱说闲话的人) have in common? My mother believes that both are morally suspect, a lesson we readily pass on to our children: avoid the cheater and the whisperer.
But stories simplify reality. The most effective social climbers and gossipers possess a remarkable grasp of social structure to navigate (导航) their social worlds. This skill isn’t a moral failing; it’s a cognitive (认知的) skill.
Recent work from my laboratory shows that cognitive maps — mental representations of the social world — shape our critical social skills. Social success depends not just on whom you know but also on how well you understand the invisible architecture of your social world. Mapping this is no small task, as social networks are large and dynamic. Yet building such cognitive maps offers great advantages.
To better understand social navigation, my collaborator and I developed studies to investigate how people build cognitive maps. Across a year we tracked about 200 freshmen’s friendships and asked them to report their understanding of others’ connections.
In one study, we discovered that those who rise to the top of the social structure aren’t the most charming or outgoing — they’re the best social mapmakers. The most influential people quickly build mental maps of their peers’ connection; those initially influential but without accurate mental maps of the network did not stay influential for long.
In a second paper, we examined whether mapmaking aids gossiping — a behavior that, despite its poor reputation, can be an efficient way to quickly learn about the ins and outs of the community. To understand how humans pull off this remarkable task, we wondered whether mapmaking helps predict where information will spread. Mental maps become quite useful in this case, as they reveal two key network features: someone’s popularity and their distance from the gossip target. They help find a good friend — someone far enough from the target yet well-connected to spread information.
How does the brain build these maps? In one of our recent studies, we discovered that the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex — a neural (神经的) center known for navigating physical space — also carries a map of connections among people. The more strongly these maps are embedded in the brain, the better we are at brokering community ties. If the brain needs to quickly figure out where gossip might spread, knowing where the popular people are positioned or the key relationships that bridge the otherwise disconnected communities allows us to chart the sequence of ties that can efficiently cross the network.
Strategic wayfinding isn’t only for physical space. It is just as necessary to be able to effectively move through our social landscapes. Armed with a deliberately unclear map of their social community, skilled social navigators can do what no GPS can. They see the bridges before they’re built, avoid the storms of gossip, and map out a course to common ground.
8. As for his mother’s belief, the author is ________.
A. disapproving B. supportive C. puzzled D. unconcerned
9. According to the passage, social cognitive maps can help ________.
A. control the wide spread of gossip storms
B. memorize others’ connections in social groups
C. gain long-lasting social influence among peers
D. choose well-connected people as gossip targets
10. What does the underlined word “brokering” in Paragraph 7 probably mean?
A. Breaking. B. Managing. C. Experiencing. D. Recording.
11. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. How to Interpret Social Skills
B. Navigating Our Social Worlds
C. What Lies Behind People’s Social Behaviors
D. Brain Structures Shaping Social Relationships
D
AI systems are often described as “brain-like” because they can predict activity in parts of the brain that help us recognize objects. Until now, scientists mostly tested this in one direction. Researchers from York University wanted to determine whether these systems truly operate like biological vision.
The researchers reversed (反向开展) that familiar test. If AI genuinely reflects the brain, they reasoned, then recorded brain activity should also predict the model’s internal responses.
The researchers tested the models with 1,320 natural photographs and realistic synthetic (合成的) images. The set included bears, elephants, faces, apples, cars, dogs, chairs, planes, birds, and zebras shown against indoor, outdoor, and other natural backgrounds. They also used 300 additional images describing the same objects in changed forms, including outlines, drawings, simplified representations, and artistic variations. This broader range helped test whether the relationship between brain activity and AI features held across different visual styles.
“The results were striking. While AI models can predict the neurons (神经元) we recorded in the brain fairly well, the reverse is not true. Interestingly, this is not the case when neurons from one brain are compared against ones from another brain, and the one-sided imbalance disappears,” says York University Assistant Professor Kohitij Kar.
This imbalance suggests that AI models may reach correct visual answers through processes that differ from those used by the brain. Kar warns that the mismatch could widen as models become more complex. If an AI model predicts neurons but its own internal features cannot be predicted from neural activity, it may not provide a reliable explanation of how the brain works.
Researchers increasingly use AI models to design studies of human behavior, including clinical research. Much of that work assumes the systems process the world like the brain.
More accurate brain-like models could eventually support research involving conditions related to the brain. For now, however, using systems that do not match brain function well to interpret human behavior carries risks. Comparable models are also being applied to hearing, language and movement, making reliable testing important across several fields.
12. What did most previous studies focus on concerning AI models?
A. How the brain genuinely reflected them. B. How they were integrated into the brain.
C. Whether they could predict brain activity. D. Whether they took control of the neurons.
13. What does the brain fail to do in the reverse test?
A. Recognize objects in natural photographs. B. Process visual information like AI models.
C. Forecast neurons from another similar brain. D. Equally predict AI models’ internal features.
14. Why is clinical research mentioned in paragraph 6?
A. To doubt the reliability of current AI models. B. To highlight the significance of the reverse test.
C. To sing high praises for technological advances. D. To prove the similarity between AI and the brain.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Novel Test on Advanced AI Models B. Brain-Like AI Models Matter in Research
C. AI Models May Not Think Like the Brain D. A Way to Improve AI’s Prediction Accuracy

Inspire Yourself: Simple Steps to Creative Renewal
Oftentimes, people find themselves waiting for inspiration to strike like lightning from some external force. But this kind of waiting is useless, because true inspiration does not live outside of us. It comes from within. ____16____
The word “inspire” comes from a Latin word meaning “to breathe or blow into”. Each inhale (吸入) draws in vitality; each exhale (呼出) releases what we no longer need. ____17____ When we breathe with intention, we nourish all the neglected (被忽视的) corners of our inner and outer worlds.
Nature has been a source of inspiration for people throughout time. ____18____ The important key here is that to be inspired by nature, you have to be in nature. Notice the weather, the feel of the air, or any smells. Inspiration is always around us, the key is to stay tuned in enough to become sensitive and aware of it.
Furthermore, every time we have a new experience, we become more inspired. When we fall into routines, we are going through daily tasks without thinking. ____19____ Instead, you can listen to a new song, or visit a new place. This practice will stimulate different parts of your brain, and have you seeing and thinking in new ways.
Finally, we often draw inspiration from observing and engaging in creative expression. Watching a play in person can be extremely rewarding. This kind of experience reaches deep within us, touching the core of what it truly means to be human. Observing others as they express themselves puts us more in touch with our own creative nature. ____20____
It is not uncommon to feel resistance before beginning any one of these things. However, once you take the first step and start, you will find that in that moment inspiration will bloom inside you.
A. It is the first thing we do when we enter this world.
B. Although this can be comforting, it can also be boring.
C. As Van Gogh put it, “The sight of stars makes me dream.”
D. In this way, inspiration is a cycle of receiving and releasing.
E. It begins the moment we turn inward and choose to awaken it.
F. This may mean writing a poem or story, drawing, painting, or dancing.
G. As Mountain Dreamer says, “It’s unfamiliar things that stimulate my imagination.”

My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway. Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait—and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother—we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order. More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean (断奶) him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding “Squirt.” Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong. Within a few weeks he became more active. He would chatter (吱吱叫) for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny. Just like a child, he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety. Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

根据原文第一段“My mother believes that both are morally suspect, a lesson we readily pass on to our children: avoid the cheater and the whisperer. (我母亲认为,二者在品行上都令人存疑。我们也轻易把这种观念传给下一代:远离投机钻营者,远离私下说闲话的人。)”及第二段“But stories simplify reality. The most effective social climbers and gossipers possess a remarkable grasp of social structure to navigate their social worlds. This skill isn’t a moral failing; it’s a cognitive skill. (但世俗说法简化了现实。那些擅长社交攀附与闲聊八卦的人,对社交结构有着极强的把控力,能从容游走在社交圈中。这种能力并非道德缺陷,而是一种认知技能。)” 可知,作者并不认同母亲单纯从道德层面否定这类人的观点,对母亲的观点持不赞同的态度。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据原文第五段“In one study, we discovered that those who rise to the top of the social structure aren’t the most charming or outgoing — they’re the best social mapmakers. (在一项研究中我们发现,那些跻身社交顶层的人,并不是最有魅力或最外向的人,而是最擅长绘制社交认知图谱的人。)”及“The most influential people quickly build mental maps of their peers’ connection; those initially influential but without accurate mental maps of the network did not stay influential for long. (最具影响力的人能快速构建同龄人社交关系的心理图谱;那些起初有影响力却没有精准社交网络心理图谱的人,无法长久保持影响力。)” 可知,社交认知图谱有助于人们在同龄人中获得持久的社交影响力。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据原文第七段“The more strongly these maps are embedded in the brain, the better we are at brokering community ties. (这些社交图谱在大脑中扎根越深刻,我们就越擅长brokering社群人际关系。)” 及原文第五段“In one study, we discovered that those who rise to the top of the social structure aren’t the most charming or outgoing — they’re the best social mapmakers. (在一项研究中我们发现,那些跻身社交顶层的人,并不是最有魅力或最外向的人,而是最擅长绘制社交认知图谱的人。)”可知,社交认知图谱构建得越完善,就越能处理好人际关系,故此处brokering意为 “打理、维系、经营”,与Managing同义。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据原文第四段“To better understand social navigation, my collaborator and I developed studies to investigate how people build cognitive maps. (为了更好地理解社交处世这一行为,我和合作伙伴开展了多项研究,探究人们是如何构建社交认知图谱的。)”及最后一段“Strategic wayfinding isn’t only for physical space. It is just as necessary to be able to effectively move through our social landscapes. (策略性的寻路不只适用于物理空间,在社交图景中从容周旋同样至关重要。)” 以及全文围绕社交认知图谱、社交处世与布局展开论述可知,全文核心主题是“经营我们的社交世界”。

C 13. D 14. B 15. C

Until now, scientists mostly tested this in one direction.(人工智能系统常被描述为“类脑”的,因为它们能够预测大脑中帮助我们识别物体的区域活动。
根据第四段“While AI models can predict the neurons (神经元) we recorded in the brain fairly well, the reverse is not true.(虽然AI模型可以相当准确地预测我们记录到的大脑神经元,但反过来则不然)”可知,反向测试中大脑无法同等预测AI模型的内部特征。
根据倒数第二段“Researchers increasingly use AI models to design studies of human behavior, including clinical research. Much of that work assumes the systems process the world like the brain.(研究人员越来越多地使用人工智能模型来设计人类行为研究,包括临床研究。其中大部分工作都假设这些系统像大脑一样处理世界)”可知,举临床研究例子,凸显反向测试的重要意义。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合倒数第三段“This imbalance suggests that AI models may reach correct visual answers through processes that differ from those used by the brain.(这种失衡表明,AI模型可能通过不同于大脑所采用的机制来获得正确的视觉答案)”可知,本文核心是介绍研究发现AI模型的运行机制可能和生物大脑并不相同。

Dear Peter,
Thank you for your great interest in our school’s Mental Health Week themed “Caring for Our Minds, Growing in Sunshine”.
A wide range of activities were held last week. We attended expert lectures, learning practical methods to manage stress. We also had group sharing sessions in which we talked about our feelings and troubles with classmates. What’s more, some relaxing games were organized to help us lighten our burden.
Through these events, we have realized the importance of mental health and learned to care for our inner world.
Do you have similar activities in your school? Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels. But the family was none too happy about his visit. They scolded and swatted at him. At first Squirt was so unhappy that he avoided them. And then he quickly learned some social skills. He would take some snacks to meet them. For several days he played all day in the trees surrounding our house but came down at bedtime.
One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained hard. Our girls fretted. They wanted to seek Squirt. We prevented them because it was too dangerous. But when the sun rose the next day, there was Squirt, begging for food. And that remained the pattern for weeks. The experience was entertaining and heartwarming for our family. In the wild and somewhat silly moments of raising an orphaned baby squirrel, our children learned to value and appreciate life.
