Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,” she added. After she studied fire statistics, Shanya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring. With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype was difficult and the hardest part was the programming. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed,” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors. “Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage in all young people,” said Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM(science, technology, engineering and maths) fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas. 4. What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system? A. Her experience of a destructive fire. B. Her desire to win the science award. C. Her interest in computer programming. D. Her goal to improve STEM education for girls. 5. What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention? A. It consists of two parts that are easier to conduct. B. It can send out a warning against a potential fire. C. It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air. D. It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes. 6. Which of the following can best describe Shanya’s inventing work? A. Thrilling. B. Smooth. C. Supported. D. Rough. 7. What’s the best title for this article? A. Shanya Gill inspires the discriminated B. Fire detection system is upgraded C. TFSJIC ends with glory and promise D. Middle schooler stands out in TFSJIC 【答案】4. A 5. B 6. D 7. 根据第二段“Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. (据《华盛顿邮报》报道,Shanya的灵感来自2022年夏天她所在社区的一家餐馆被大火烧毁。)”以及她所说的“I had never really experienced something like that before (我以前从未真正经历过这样的事情)”可知,一场破坏性的火灾激发了她开发火灾探测系统的动机。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning.(该设备利用热成像相机与微型计算机树莓派,能检测到热源无人看管十分钟的情况,并发送短信警告。)” 根据第四段“Creating the prototype was difficult and the hardest part was the programming. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed,” she said. (制作原型很困难,最难的部分是编程。“我有两个设计,第一个设计完全失败了,”她说。)”可知,Shanya的发明过程并不顺利,经历了失败和困难,因此用“Rough(艰难的)”来描述最为恰当。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (TFSJIC) for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release. (据新闻稿称,来自加利福尼亚州圣何塞的中学生Shanya Gill因设计了一种优于现有系统的火灾探测系统,在赛默飞世尔科技少年创新者挑战赛中获得最高奖项。)”可知,全文围绕一位中学生在TFSJIC中脱颖而出展开,D选项“初中生在TFSJIC中脱颖而出”符合题意,适合作标题。 C Botanists have known that plants can communicate via chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). When plants are attacked by pests, the composition of the VOCs they release changes. Previous work has shown that this drives nearby plants to raise their own defences in anticipation of being attacked in turn. What has gone unexplored is whether plants detect VOCs released by their neighbours when they are healthy. So ecologist Velemir Ninkovic decided to run an experiment. Dr. Ninkovic and his colleagues planted three varieties of barley (大麦) that grow at different rates — one quick, one slow, and one middling. The plants were put in growing containers next to one another, but with no way for them to shade their neighbours. The only connection that the plants had to one another was through one-way air channels that connected their growing containers. These allowed the researchers to blow air from one container to the next, and to monitor the effect that this had on the plants over 25 days. The results were striking. The slow-growing barley grew more quickly when it was exposed to air from the containers of its fast-growing cousins, producing 20% more biomass than when it was placed next to slower-growing plants. This, Dr. Ninkovic believes, is because the slow-growing plants were detecting the compounds released by their neighbours and realising that, in the wild at least, they would be at risk of getting shaded out if they did not get a shift on. Fast-growing plants exposed to air from the containers of their slow-growing cousins reacted in the opposite way. With less need to race for the sun, they cut their growth rates notably. While the slow growers were switching resources towards growth, the speedsters were able to spend more of theirs on resource-intensive defensive measures. Barley, in other words, can chemically detect their competitors, and adjust their own growing strategies accordingly. Farmers are already experimenting with using VOCs to boost productivity. Dr. Ninkovic’s results suggest VOCs could be used to stimulate protective compounds when pests are expected, or to accelerate growth when risk is low. 8. What role did the one-way air channels play in the experiment? A. They allowed sharing nutrients. B. They helped defend against pests. C. They regulated experiment conditions. D. They prevented plants’ overshadowing. 9. What does the underlined phrase “get a shift on” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Give in. B. Speed up. C. Move away. D. Watch out. 10. What happened to the fast-growing barley when exposed to air from its rivals? A. They invested more in self-protection. B. They stopped growing to avoid competition. C. They grew faster to maintain their advantage. D. They released more VOCs to warn their rivals. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. The role of VOCs in plant defense. B. Why plants grow at different rates. C. How plants keep spying on the competition. D. The benefits of planting crops in different places. C 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第二段中“The only connection that the plants had to one another was through one-way air channels that connected their growing containers. These allowed the researchers to blow air from one container to the next, and to monitor the effect that this had on the plants over 25 days. (植株之间唯一的联系是通过连接种植容器的单向空气通道。研究人员可以通过这些通道将空气从一个容器吹到另一个容器,并在25天的时间里监测这对植株产生的影响。)”可知,单向空气通道用于控制实验环境,实现气体传递,方便科研人员开展实验、监测实验效果。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段“The slow-growing barley grew more quickly when it was exposed to air from the containers of its fast-growing cousins, producing 20% more biomass than when it was placed next to slower-growing plants. This, Dr. Ninkovic believes, is because the slow-growing plants were detecting the compounds released by their neighbours and realising that, in the wild at least, they would be at risk of getting shaded out if they did not get a shift on. 根据第四段中“While the slow growers were switching resources towards growth, the speedsters were able to spend more of theirs on resource‑intensive defensive measures. (当生长缓慢的植株把资源转向生长时,这些生长迅速的植株就能够把更多资源投入到耗费大量资源的防御机制上。)”可知,接触到慢生大麦释放气体的快生大麦会将更多资源用于自我保护。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据全文内容,尤其是最后一段“Barley, in other words, can chemically detect their competitors, and adjust their own growing strategies accordingly. (换句话说,大麦可以通过化学方式察觉竞争对手,并相应调整自身生长策略。)”可知,文章主要讲述植物能够通过化学信号感知竞争对手,调整自身生长模式。 D From live speech translation in video calls to auto-dubbing on TikTok, real-time translation powered by artificial intelligence(AI) is now embedded in everyday life. All this raises a vital question. If machines can do this faster and more accurately than humans, is investing years in learning another language still worth it? Our recent study examined cognitive performance in 94 adults aged 18 to 83, using both visuospatial and auditory tasks across working memory, attention and inhibition. Put simply, we looked at how people process and respond to information they see or mentally map out in space(visuospatial) and information they hear(auditory). Examples include remembering sounds, focusing on visual patterns, or ignoring distractions. Our study measured multilingualism as a spectrum, not a category. This allowed us to capture diverse language backgrounds and experiences. Multilingual participants spoke a range of languages with varying levels of proficiency and daily use, reflecting the linguistic diversity common within multicultural communities. Across most tasks, multilinguals and monolinguals performed similarly. However, one pattern was striking. Individuals with richer, more diverse multilingual experience showed markedly better performance in visuospatial working memory. These effects were most pronounced in older people. This suggests that multilingual experience doesn’t broadly enhance cognition, like some headlines claim. Instead, it may help preserve specific functions over time. Separate population-level research has also linked multilingualism to later onset of Alzheimer’s disease and better overall ageing outcomes, though the mechanisms continue to be debated. Overall, however, it appears that sustained use of multiple languages represents a form of mental activity with effects that accumulate across a lifetime. AI translation excels at speed and accessibility. For many practical purposes, it works remarkably well. AI will continue to change how we engage with language learning. It can personalize instruction, minimize barriers and provide feedback at scale. But it can’t replace the cognitive work that comes from learning a language. This work builds and preserves the mental sharpness that sustains us across a lifetime. And this difference still matters. 12. Why does the author mention “live speech translation” and “auto-dubbing” in paragraph 1? A. To choose one as the topic. B. To invite further reflection. C. To recommend translation apps. D. To praise technological advances. 13. What do we know about the recent study? A. Its method is totally traditional. B. Its process is very time-consuming. C. Its subjects are distributed across ages. D. Its results match most previous claims. 14. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. AI translation excels in a wide range of aspects. B. AI will not shake the value of language learning. C. AI era greatly changes how people use a language. D. AI has a long way to go before doing cognitive work. 15. Where is the article most probably taken from? A. A science magazine. B. A local news update. C. A technological brochure. D. An English-learning guide. B 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第一段“From live speech translation in video calls to auto-dubbing on TikTok, real-time translation powered by artificial intelligence(AI) is now embedded in everyday life. All this raises a vital question. If machines can do this faster and more accurately than humans, is investing years in learning another language still worth it? (从视频通话中的实时语音翻译到TikTok上的自动配音,由人工智能驱动的实时翻译如今已融入日常生活。这一切提出了一个至关重要的问题。如果机器能够比人类更快、更准确地完成这些任务,那么投入数年时间学习另一门语言是否还值得呢?)”可知,作者提及这两个例子是为了引出“机器翻译如此高效,学习外语是否还值得”这一值得深思的问题,即邀请读者进一步思考。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Our recent study examined cognitive performance in 94 adults aged 18 to 83, using both visuospatial and auditory tasks across working memory, attention and inhibition. (我们最近的研究考察了94名18至83岁成年人的认知表现,使用了涉及工作记忆、注意力和抑制的视觉空间和听觉任务。)”可知,该研究的受试对象年龄跨度从18岁到83岁,涵盖了不同年龄段。 【14题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“AI translation excels at speed and accessibility. At a glance, a career in science can bring great rewards, yet it seems a challenging and demanding path. ____16____ It is wise to explore diverse scientific disciplines early on. The village was beautiful — green hills, clean streams, air so fresh you could taste it. As a boy, Oren woke to the chirping of robins and the smell of damp earth. He spent afternoons wading in the creek, picking blackberries, and catching fireflies in old jam jars at dusk. But Hollow Creek had a problem. The only road out was narrow and full of pits. No bus came through. And one by one, the young people left, leaving the elderly behind and letting the fields go unused. Oren was raised by his grandmother, and like so many from the village, he left for college and never planned to move back. After graduation, Oren landed a job at a marketing firm in Clarksville, four hours away. He learned social media advertising, email campaigns, and his specialty — live selling. The pay was decent, his apartment had central air, and his coworkers thought he was funny. By all accounts, he was doing fine. Still, every time he called his grandmother, she had the same story. “The peaches are beautiful this year,” she’d say. “But nobody to sell them to. We’re just watching them rot!” The old folks still farmed, but without a way to reach customers, their harvest went to waste. One August, Oren drove back for a long weekend. On the dirt path to his grandmother’s house, he passed table after table of unsold produce: peaches so ripe they almost glowed, crisp heads of lettuce, jars of wild berry jam. Old men sat on upturned buckets, saying nothing, their gazes empty. Women fanned themselves on porches, their tired eyes betraying a quiet despair. A few cars passed, but no one stopped. Oren stood there for a minute, staring at a rotting peach on the ground. Then, without any dramatic flash of light, he knew what he had to do. He had the skills. They had the goods. The only thing missing was a bridge. With a clear plan in mind, Oren quit his job and started his work to help the villagers. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As Oren’s efforts paid off, great changes took place in the village. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文: With a clear plan in mind, Oren quit his job and started his work to help the villagers. He converted his grandmother’s unused room into a simple live-streaming studio and patiently taught elderly farmers to showcase their fresh peaches, crisp lettuce and fragrant wild berry jam in a natural way. Drawing on his professional marketing skills, he optimized vivid online posts, built a reliable local delivery network and hosted night live streams to match urban customers’ schedules. Though some villagers doubted his new method at first, his continuous efforts and promising results gradually won their trust, turning their previously rotting harvests into steady income. As Oren’s efforts paid off, great changes took place in the village. The lonely dirt path was improved, and a regular bus route finally ended the village’s long-time isolation. Many young villagers chose to return home, bringing new ideas to develop various value-added local products. Abandoned fields were fully reclaimed and covered with thriving crops. The once quiet village turned warm and lively. Oren’s grandmother often watched the vibrant scene joyfully, deeply thankful that Oren had built a solid bridge between traditional village farming and modern digital sales. 词汇激活 行为类 ①改造:convert/transform ②展示:showcase/display/present 情绪类 ①喜悦地:joyfully/happily/delightedly/cheerfully ②感激的:thankful/grateful/appreciative 【点睛】【高分句型1】Drawing on his professional marketing skills, he optimized vivid online posts, built a reliable local delivery network and hosted night live streams to match urban customers’ schedules. B Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge(TFSJIC) for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release. Middle schooler stands out in TFSJIC C Botanists have known that plants can communicate via chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). D From live speech translation in video calls to auto-dubbing on TikTok, real-time translation powered by artificial intelligence(AI) is now embedded in everyday life. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
