Food is like a magical bridge and it connects people from different places and backgrounds. Let me tell you a story about my friend Li Rong.
Last year, Li went to America to study. The food there was very different from that in China. She missed the warm soups, spicy (辛辣的) noodles, and fresh dumplings from China. At school, Li felt a bit lonely because she didn’t know anyone. One day, during lunchtime, a girl named Olivia saw Li sitting at the table by herself. So she invited Li to join her and her friends for lunch.
Olivia’s friends all had brought different kinds of food from their countries. There was pizza from Italy, sushi from Japan, and hamburgers from America. Li felt a little nervous at first, but when she sampled the different foods, she said, “How delicious they are!” She also shared her dumplings with everyone, and they all loved them.
From that day on, Li and Olivia became good friends. They started sharing and cooking together after school. Li learned so much about the culture of Olivia’s country through the food they shared. This experience with Olivia showed Li that food and friendship could cross borders (边界).
So you see, food can bring people together, help them learn about each other, and make new friends, no matter where they come from.
29. How did Li Rong feel when she first arrived in America?
A. Excited. B. Nervous. C. Lonely. D. Shy.
30. What did Olivia invite Li to do during lunchtime?
A. To share some food. B. To join them for lunch.
C. To cook together. D. To share Chinese stories.
31. The underlined word “sampled” in Paragraph 3 means “________”.
A. tried B. threw C. punished D. shook
32. The writer told Li Rong’s story to ________.
A. explain how to get on well with others

C. describe how Li Rong learned to cook American food
D. show how foods connect people from different places

There has long been a discussion: Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Some say a morning shower helps wake you up, while others believe a night shower helps you relax. As a microbiologist, I have a clear answer.
Showering helps remove dirt, oil and sweat (汗). It keeps you clean and reduces body smell. Different from popular ideas, sweat itself has no smell. The bad smell comes from bacteria (细菌) on your skin when they feed on sweat.
Showering at night washes away sweat, oil and bacteria, so you leave less on your bed sheets. But you still sweat at night, feeding bacteria. You may wake up a little smelly, and sheets get dirty again. Bacteria on sheets can also return to your clean skin while you sleep. Besides, you lose dead skin cells (细胞) at night, and dust mites (尘螨) eat them and produce waste, which may cause health problems.
Morning showers wash off night sweat, dead cells and bacteria from sheets. They leave you cleaner when you put on fresh clothes and reduce sweat for bacteria. In this way, you stay clean and energetic longer during the day.
Shower time is a personal choice, but I care about bacteria—the fewer, the better. Remember to wash your sheets at least once a week, or the cleaning effect will be mostly lost.
33. What makes the body smell?
A. The skin cells. B. The sweat. C. The dust mites. D. The bacteria.
34. What can we infer about showering at night from Paragraph 3?
A. It might kill dust mites in the morning. B. It stops you from losing dead skin cells.
C. It makes you sweat less when you sleep. D. It helps keep bed sheets clean at the beginning.
35. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Hot or Cold: Secret of Taking Showers B. How Showers Keep People Healthy
C. Morning or Night: The Best Shower Time D. Why Showers Keep Your Body Clean

when“当……时候”、until“直到……”、because“因为”均逻辑不对。
【9题详解】
句意:更重要的是,自从听从你的建议我变得更积极了。
“since”引导时间状语从句时,主句要用现在完成时;主语是“I”,用have become。
【10题详解】
句意:我为我的进步感到自豪,真心很感谢你的耐心和善意。
“and”前后连接名词,空格和patience“耐心”并列,应用名词kindness。

A. Excited. B. Nervous. C. Lonely. D. Shy.

D 34. D 35. C
根据第二段“Different from popular ideas, sweat itself has no smell. The bad smell comes from bacteria on your skin when they feed on sweat.”,因此,身体气味是由细菌引起的,而非汗液本身。
根据第三段“Showering at night washes away sweat, oil and bacteria, so you leave less on your bed sheets.”,因此晚上洗澡能洗去汗液、油脂和细菌,床单最初会比较干净。
全文围绕两种淋浴时间对比展开,从细菌学角度分析利弊,所以“Morning or Night: The Best Shower Time”最适合做标题。

Dear Peter,
I’m glad to hear that you are interested in Chinese culture. Let me tell you something about Chinese food culture.
In China, we eat with chopsticks instead of knives and forks. We often eat baozi, eggs or porridge for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, we usually eat rice, meat, vegetables or soup. It’s very important to learn about some of our table manners. First, you should let the old people eat first. Second, it’s impolite to stick your chopsticks into your food. Besides, you shouldn’t talk with a full mouth. In a word, watch the Chinese and do as they do!
I hope the above is helpful. Please feel free to ask for more information.
Yours,
Li Hua
