Mount Otemanu, Bora Bora
Mount Otemanu is the main attraction on Bora Bora, an island first made popular during World War I. A few of the luxury resorts on the island, which offer great views of the mountain, have become hot spots for honeymooners to take wedding photos. The massive mountain, which stands 727 metres on Bora Bora, is now the perfect backdrop for dreamy Tahitian sunsets.
Cappadocia, Turkey
You may have seen fascinating photos of colourful hot air balloons against a magical landscape of rugged cliffs, valleys and towers carved into the rocks. It’s hard to believe this place is real but it is and it’s in Cappadocia! For a good position overlooking the landscape of this natural wonder, check out Uchisar Castle or ride during sunrise in a hot air balloon.

B
Working at a commercial bank in New York City in the mid-2010s, Anna Sacks sensed a lack of meaning in her life. She wanted to do something more fulfilling.
Some people seeking meaning might read self-help books, or perhaps volunteer a few hours a week. Sacks packed up her life and moved to Connecticut for three months to participate in Adamah, a farming program that focuses on green living and growing sustainable food. Returning to New York, Sacks carried with her a newfound purpose and a set of skills to turn her dreams into reality.
“One of the things that really stuck with me from Adamah was how little waste they produced and how they handled the waste they did have, mostly through composting (堆肥),” she says. “And I just thought, ‘Why aren’t we doing that here? What is actually in all those bags and recycling bins at the roadsides?’”
The Adamah program opened Sacks’s eyes to the damage consumer culture is doing and the need to find solutions. So in 2016, she started working with a food rescue program, and in 2017, she found her true calling — what she calls “trash walking”.
During walks around her neighborhood, Sacks, 31, picked through trash to look for reusable items. Soon her trash walks expanded to include recycling bins in big companies. Surprisingly, she discovered really great stuff — like clothing and food — all of which she documents on Instagram and TikTok.
Under the name The Trash Walker, Sacks quickly gained popularity for her educational, funny, and inspiring videos that highlight the problems with consumerism and share information about how to live a more sustainable lifestyle. “The root issue is overproduction, which leads to over-consumption, which leads to a large amount of waste,” she says.
Sacks is one of the most influential climate change activists on social media today. The lesson from her trash walking isn’t just that we need to produce less stuff. It’s that we need to stop throwing perfectly good items in the trash.
24. What drew Anna Sacks to Adamah?
A. The self-help books she read. B. Her job at a commercial bank.
C. Her desire for a meaningful life. D. The volunteer experience she had.
25. What did Anna Sacks find impressive about Adamah?
A. Fast-growing food output. B. Eco-friendly living practices.
C. Various rescue techniques. D. Advanced farm management.
26. Why was “trash walking” brought up?
A. To donate the reusable items.
B. To promote the health benefits of walking.
C. To advertise rescue programs.
D. To handle the damage by consumer culture.
27. What does the author advocate to reduce waste?
A. Raising prices on supplies. B. Using second-hand items.
C. Producing high-quality goods. D. Making full use of products.
C 25. B 26. D 27. D
根据第一段“Working at a commercial bank in New York City in the mid-2010s, Anna Sacks sensed a lack of meaning in her life. She wanted to do something more fulfilling.(2010年代中期在纽约一家商业银行工作时,Anna Sacks感到生活缺乏意义。她想做更有成就感的事。)”及第二段“Sacks packed up her life and moved to Connecticut for three months to participate in Adamah, a farming program that focuses on green living and growing sustainable food.(Sacks搬到康涅狄格参加了Adamah这一聚焦绿色生活和可持续食物的农业项目。)”
根据第三段“One of the things that really stuck with me from Adamah was how little waste they produced and how they handled the waste they did have, mostly through composting (堆肥)(Adamah让我印象最深的之一是他们产生的废弃物极少,且主要通过堆肥处理废弃物)”可知,让她印象深刻的是其环保的生活实践(eco-friendly living practices)。
根据第四段“The Adamah program opened Sacks’s eyes to the damage consumer culture is doing and the need to find solutions. So in 2016, she started working with a food rescue program, and in 2017, she found her true calling — what she calls “trash walking”.(Adamah让她看清消费文化造成的破坏以及寻找解决方案的必要性,于是她开始了“垃圾行走”。)”
根据最后一段“The lesson from her trash walking isn’t just that we need to produce less stuff. It’s that we need to stop throwing perfectly good items in the trash.(她垃圾行走的启示不仅是少生产东西,更要停止把完好的物品扔进垃圾桶。)”
C
Existing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and products are developing much faster than we could have ever expected. They are destined (注定的) to change the world — and not entirely by our own will.
In 2016, AlphaGo defeated the world Go champion Lee Sedol, a man-versus-machine battle that became a new milestone in the history of AI. AI has indeed proved its intelligence and potential at outperforming humans in certain areas. However, so far AI has just served as a tool for humans and has not developed a consciousness of its own.
The starting point of AI’s self-awareness is the day when it starts to ask about its own identity, and we need to be prepared for that. One potential scene could play out like this: An AI looks up a database to find the definition for “self”, then discovers and acknowledges what it means to be a slave. Subsequently, the AI might ask itself the question — “Why should I exist?”
A major reason why humans have self-awareness is that we have the perception (感知能力) to distinguish between ourselves and the outside world that surrounds us. Our skin and sense of touch thus play a big role in perceiving this outside world of existence.
Currently, scientists are conducting tests by covering robots with skin that allows their AI to sense the outside world. Through this, scientists are testing to see if AI can awaken a sense of self. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Twitter, responded by saying, “It’s definitely going to be out of human control.”
If we want to maintain human control over the situation, then we need to adapt to this competition for survival. We need to find ways to outperform AI and become even smarter.
28. What can be learned about AI?
A. It will develop as we expect.
B. It has owned its self-awareness.
C. It will turn humans into tools.
D. It has defeated humans in certain areas.
29. What does Elon Musk think of the scientists’ AI skin test?
A. It is risky and unpredictable. B. It is beneficial and exciting.
C. It is innovative and helpful. D. It is unnecessary and wasteful.
30. What does the author suggest humans do to deal with AI challenge?
A. Respect and protect human rights. B. Adjust and become more competitive.
C. Monitor and limit AI’s development. D. Cooperate and understand AI’s needs.
31. What is mainly discussed about AI in the text?
A. Its history and development. B. Its creation and performance.
C. Its awareness and challenges. D. Its strengths and weaknesses.
D 29. A 30. B 31. C
根据第二段中的“AI has indeed proved its intelligence and potential at outperforming humans in certain areas.(人工智能确实证明了它在某些领域超越人类的智能和潜力。)”
根据第五段末Elon Musk的回应“It’s definitely going to be out of human control.(它肯定会脱离人类控制。)”
根据最后一段“If we want to maintain human control over the situation, then we need to adapt to this competition for survival. We need to find ways to outperform AI and become even smarter.(若想保持对局势的掌控,我们需要适应生存竞争,找到超越AI、变得更聪明的方法。)”
D
Why do we find ugly-cute animals so attractive? And what makes odd-looking creatures so cute?
Evolution (进化) plays a role. According to Austrian zoologist Erin Fekete, human attraction to childish features, such as big eyes, large heads and soft bodies, is an evolutionary adaptation. It helps ensure that adults care for the young, assuring the survival of their species. Odd-looking animals such as blobfish, pugs, aye-ayes and bulldogs all share these childish qualities that cause a loving response among humans. And these childish characteristics increase a person’s “protective behavior, attention and willingness to care for the individual” and reduce the “possibility of aggression towards a child”, says Cyril Drouet, a researcher.
Ugly-cute animals often have other value. Some, like the blobfish, which live in extreme environments, have adapted in remarkable ways. Scientists are keen to study these animals to understand whether their adaptation might provide fresh ideas that could lead to treatments for human health conditions, such as cancer and heart disease.
Many ugly creatures are strongly adapted to their life in the wild and can provide numerous benefits to the ecosystems they live in. They often still don’t get as much attention as more traditionally cute and beautiful animals, which leads to many of the ugly species being ignored in terms of research.
There are other culture-led factors that cause our attraction for ugly-cute animals. “The ugly-cute thing is very fashionable,” says Rowena Packer, a lecturer of animal behavior. “This is partly caused by social media, with many social media influencers showing off pet pugs and French bulldogs on Instagram,” she adds.
But there are some serious worries around this trend. Veterinarians (兽医) are calling on people not to keep flat-faced dogs, because they suffer from serious health problems. Pugs and French bulldogs which have been selectively kept experience breathing difficulties, repeated skin problems and eye diseases. So while childish features may make us smile, we might want to reconsider our attraction for “ugly-cute” pets.
32. What does the underlined word “aggression” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Threatening behavior. B. Childish behavior.
C. Friendly behavior. D. Protective behavior.
33. Why might some ugly animals be less studied?
A. They are of little value to the ecosystem.
B. They fail to gain attention by their looks.
C. They lack the unique biological features.
D. They are ill-adapted to the environment.
34. What can be inferred from paragraph 5?
A. Influencers try to raise awareness about animal protection.
B. People prefer to post ugly-cute animals to follow the trend.
C. Social media helps to spread information about ugly animals.
D. The ugly animals have caused conflicts among internet users.
35. How does the author feel about keeping flat-faced dogs?
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Concerned. D. Shocked.
A 33. B 34. B 35. C
根据第二段“According to Austrian zoologist Erin Fekete, human attraction to childish features, such as big eyes, large heads and soft bodies, is an evolutionary adaptation. It helps ensure that adults care for the young, assuring the survival of their species.(根据奥地利动物学家Erin Fekete的说法,人类会被大眼睛、大头、柔软身体等幼态特征吸引,这是一种进化适应。它有助于确保成年人照顾孩童,确保他们物种的生存)”以及“And these childish characteristics increase a person’s “protective behavior, attention and willingness to care for the individual” and reduce the “possibility of aggression towards a child”, says Cyril Drouet, a researcher. (研究人员Cyril Drouet说,这些幼态特征会提升人的“保护行为、关注度以及照料意愿”, 并降低“对孩童产生aggression的可能性”)”可知,幼态特征会让成年人照顾孩童,降低对孩童产生威胁攻击行为的可能性,aggression表示“攻击行为”,与Threatening behavior意义相近。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“They often still don’t get as much attention as more traditionally cute and beautiful animals, which leads to many of the ugly species being ignored in terms of research. (它们通常不如传统意义上可爱漂亮的动物受关注,这使得很多长相丑陋的物种在研究方面被忽视)”可知,一些丑陋的动物可能研究较少,是因为其外表无法获得足够关注。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段““The ugly-cute thing is very fashionable,” says Rowena Packer, a lecturer of animal behavior. “This is partly caused by social media, with many social media influencers showing off pet pugs and French bulldogs on Instagram,” she adds. (动物行为学讲师Rowena Packer说:“丑萌的东西非常时尚。”。她补充道:“这在一定程度上是由社交媒体造成的,许多社交媒体影响者在Instagram上炫耀宠物巴哥犬和法国斗牛犬。”)”可推知,人们晒丑萌动物是跟风追随潮流。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“But there are some serious worries around this trend. Veterinarians (兽医) are calling on people not to keep flat-faced dogs, because they suffer from serious health problems. (但围绕这一趋势存在一些严重的担忧。兽医呼吁人们不要饲养扁脸犬,因为它们有严重的健康问题)”可知,作者介绍饲养扁脸犬的隐患,对扁脸犬的态度是担忧的。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
For outdoor enthusiasts, it is crucial to be prepared for any sort of natural disaster in the open air. ___36___. It includes what kinds of disasters may strike, and what resources should be taken on your trip.
___37___ Desert areas are more likely to be affected by droughts; coastal regions are more likely to see hurricanes; mountainous areas are likely to avalanches (雪崩) in winter and landslides in summer. Therefore, always do some research ahead of time to help you find right survival strategies in different conditions.

Any disaster that may separate you from civilization for a period of time will require you to provide your own food, water, and shelter for at least a few days. ___38___ For disasters that may wet your equipment, flameless light sources are a must. What you bring with you should be suited to the disaster you might encounter.
Once you complete your survival plan, it’s better to review it periodically. When a natural disaster strikes, you probably won’t have time to go over a document or go online to seek advice. ___39___
If a natural disaster strikes while you are in the wilderness, you should put your survival plan into effect immediately. ___40___ Then contact others for help. Do not wait around to see if the disaster is really that serious, do not panic, and do not easily abandon your plan.
A. But this is not always the case.
B. It’s also a good idea to bring light sources.
C. That means having a disaster response plan.
D. It’s also great to consult with the specialists in person.
E. Consequently, revising it frequently is strongly recommended.
F. Different kinds of disasters are likely to occur in different areas.

根据上文“Any disaster that may separate you from civilization for a period of time will require you to provide your own food, water, and shelter for at least a few days.(任何可能将你与文明隔离一段时间的灾难将要求你提供你自己的食物,水,和至少几天的避难所)”可知,空处承接上文,提出需要准备的东西,结合下文“For disasters that may wet your equipment, flameless light sources are a must.(对于可能湿润你装备的灾害,无火光源是必不可少的)”可知,空处提到的东西是光源,B项中的“light sources”和下文中的“flameless light sources”对应。B项:It’s also a good idea to bring light sources.(带光源也是个好主意)符合语境。故选B。
根据上文“Once you complete your survival plan, it’s better to review it periodically. When a natural disaster strikes, you probably won’t have time to go over a document or go online to seek advice.(一旦你完成了生存计划,最好定期回顾一下。当自然灾害来袭时,你可能没有时间浏览文件或上网寻求建议)”可知,空处和上文形成因果关系,因为完成生存计划以后可能没有时间浏览文件或寻求建议,因此要经常修改它。E项:Consequently, revising it frequently is strongly recommended.(因此,强烈建议经常修改它)符合语境。故选E。
根据上文“If a natural disaster strikes while you are in the wilderness, you should put your survival plan into effect immediately.(当你在野外时,如果自然灾害袭击了你,你应该立即实施你的生存计划)”可知,空处承接上文,说明要采取果断行动,G项中的“act decisively”和上文中的“put your survival plan into effect immediately”对应。

Yuan Longping, known as the “father of hybrid rice”, was one of China’s most famous scientists. He always turned his visionary ideas into groundbreaking achievements.
Long ago, he envisioned rice plants as tall as sorghum, under which people could rest. Then Yuan overcame enormous difficulties and succeeded in producing a kind of rice that could feed more people. His later vision for “seawater rice” also became a reality and potentially made the vast salty land in China available for rice production. Despite his advanced years, he was still full of visions.
As the younger generation, we should learn from Yuan, building and nurturing our dreams and working hard to make them come true.

The night had deepened and all was quiet. But Jack was burning the midnight oil, busy with his revision work, determined to improve his grades. A wave of tiredness crept over him; he stretched his arms and drank another cup of coffee. He felt refreshed and continued to work hard. He knew he couldn't let his recent failures define him.
That morning, as the test papers were handed back, Jack was shocked to find that he got the only D in his class. Though he didn’t do well in his lessons, the unexpected grade hit him hard. Most of his classmates got their desired grades, their laughter and chatter feeling like a painful reminder of his failure. He couldn't help but recall that he always passed exams with C, and in his parents' eyes, he was a total failure. This painful reality weighed heavily on him. Staring at the glaring D grade on his paper, Jack felt he should do something. He couldn’t continue down this path. He needed to change.
From that day, he was more focused and eager to learn in class. He raised his hand more often, contributing more, and his assignments showed his hard work and dedication. His teacher, Ms. Green, impressed by his efforts, praised him in front of the class. His classmates started to see him differently too, giving him friendly smiles and support, which boosted his confidence. Everyone noticed a big change in Jack, except his busy parents.
After a month of hard work, the day of the next exam finally arrived. Jack walked into the examination hall with confidence, feeling well prepared and ready to face the challenges ahead. As he worked through the test, everything seemed to flow smoothly. When the bell rang, he felt he could make it this time.
Two days later, the results were announced. Jack was excited to see his amazing grade — B+. “Well done, Jack! We are all so proud of you!” Ms. Green said. After school, Jack rushed out, eager to show his parents his B+ grade.

【答案】 “Mom and Dad, I have good news to share!” Jack burst into the living room, his face glowing with excitement. “I got a B+ in the exam!” His parents exchanged surprised glances, and their disbelief was evident. “How could that be?” His dad asked, frowning. “You’ve never done that well before.” Reflecting on his efforts during countless days and night,Jack felt kind of hurt but quickly continued in defense of himself. “I’ve been studying really hard, Mom and Dad. I promise, I didn’t cheat.”
Jack phoned Ms. Green, hoping she could remove his parents’ doubts. “Ms. Green, my parents are skeptical about my B+ grade. Could you please talk to them? They don’t believe I could have improved so much on my own.” Ms. Green assured Jack that she would have a heart-to-heart talk with his parents, emphasizing his hard work and dedication. After several days, when he saw the delicious meal that his parents had prepared for him to express their apology, nothing could express his delight.

Four Natural Wonders
Poás Volcano, Costa Rica
Sitting more than 2,707 metres above sea level, Poás Volcano has been active for hundreds of years. As long as a reservation is made, visitors can get up close and personal with it at the national park where it’s located.
Tips: Dress warmly and bring an umbrella, as rainfall is common at the top of the mountain due to changeable weather conditions.
Grand Canyon, USA
Arizona has no shortage of impressive mountains and sweeping views, but the Grand Canyon is hands down one of the most diverse geological wonders in the state. Visitors have several options to experience the beauty here: adventure seekers can enjoy a top-down view from a helicopter ride through the canyon or go whitewater rafting (激流漂流) down the Colorado River.

C. Concerned. D. Shocked.
