He’s a comedian, he’s an actor, he’s British and the whole world knows him as the silent, black-haired character Mr. Bean. That’s right, Rowan Atkinson.
Atkinson was born in Newcastle, England and was educated at Newcastle University and Oxford. While at Oxford, he met the writer Richard Curtis, who was studying there too, and they became friends. Curtis was the opposite of Atkinson. He had great love for words while Atkinson enjoyed nonverbal comedy. Together they began writing comedy reviews for the Oxford Playhouse. Shortly afterwards, Atkinson began appearing in smaller theaters in Edinburgh. After a show at the Hampstead Theater in 1978, he was offered a part in the BBC series Not the Nine o’clock News. This series got off to a slow start, but soon became a huge success, with Atkinson winning a BAFTA award for his work. However, being a very sensible man, Atkinson saw the whole acting job as a hobby, along with his growing interest in car racing.
Atkinson made his big-screen debut (初次亮相) in 1983’s unofficial James Bond film Never Say Never Again. That same year Atkinson appeared in the BBC series called Black Adder. The main hero named Edmund, tries unsuccessfully to become King of England after accidentally killing his uncle Richard III during a fight. This was followed by three hugely successful sequels (续集) each set in a different era of England’s history. The Black Adder series was voted the Best Comedy Show of the Year in 1990. He then went on to create Mr. Bean. A walking disaster, Bean was purely physical comedy, the opposite of Edmund. This character was a huge success and became another national treasure. In 1997 Bean came to the big screen. A few years later, Scooby Doo became a box office hit in the US in 2002. This was followed by Johnny English in 2003, a funny work of James Bond films.
In his spare time Atkinson collects classic cars and takes part in races. He also writes for the British magazine CAR. He is a very shy man, and has managed to keep his private life private.
41. How did Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson get to know each other?
A. They worked together for BBC B. They met in the Oxford Playhouse
C. They starred in the same series D. They went to the same university
42. According to the text, the BBC series Not the Nine o’clock News ________.
A. brought Atkinson fame
B. became successful immediately
C. made Atkinson give up physical comedy
D. showed Atkinson’s weakness
43. What do we know about Atkinson at the beginning of his career?
A. He kept writing comedies. B. He did not see acting as a job.
C. He did not like physical comedy. D. He had an argument with Curtis.
44. Which work would you recommend to someone who like humor mixed with history?
A. Black Adder. B. Mr. Bean.
C. Johnny English. D. Not the Nine o’clock News.
45. Where is the passage most probably taken from?
A. A guidebook introducing Rowan Atkinson’s comedy characters.
B. A critical review of Rowan Atkinson’s film.
C. An entertainment magazine’s column — Famous Stars.
D. A textbook chapter about British comedy history.

Until recently, the “science of the future” was supposed to be electronics and artificial intelligence. Today it seems more and more likely that the next great breakthroughs in technology will be brought through a combination of those two sciences with organic chemistry and genetic engineering. This combination is the science of biotechnology.
Organic chemistry enables us to produce marvelous synthetic materials. However, it is still difficult to manufacture anything that has the capacity of wool to conserve heat and also to absorb moisture. Nothing that we have been able to produce so far comes anywhere near the combination of strength, lightness and flexibility that we find in the bodies of ordinary insects.
Nevertheless, scientists in the laboratory have already succeeded in “growing” a material that has many of the characteristics of human skin. There is a good chance that our next step will be “biotech hearts and eyes” which can replace diseased organs in human beings. These will not be rejected by the immune system, as is often the case with organs from donors.
The application of biotechnology to energy production seems even more auspicious. In 1996 the famous science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke, many of whose previous predictions have come true, said that we might soon be able to develop remarkably cheap and renewable sources of energy and some of these power sources would be biological. Clarke and others have warned us repeatedly that sooner or later we will have to give up our dependence on non-renewable power sources. Coal, oil and gas are indeed convenient. However, using them also means creating dangerously high levels of pollution. It will be impossible to meet the growing demand for energy without increasing that pollution to catastrophic levels unless we develop power sources that are both cheaper and cleaner.
It is tempting to think that biotechnology or some other “science of the future” can solve our problems. Before we surrender to that temptation we should remember nuclear power. Only a few generations ago it seemed to promise limitless, cheap and safe energy. Today those promises lie buried in a concrete grave in a place called Chernobyl, in Ukraine. Biotechnology is unlikely, however, to break its promises in quite the same or such a dangerous way.
46. According to Paragraph 2, what is the author’s view on natural materials compared to synthetic ones?
A. Natural materials are superior in multiple properties.
B. Synthetic materials have surpassed natural ones in quality.
C. Organic chemistry cannot replicate natural materials’ features.
D. Future technology will eliminate the need for natural materials.
47. The examples of “biotech hearts and eyes” in Paragraph 3 are used to demonstrate ________.
A. the complete replacement of human organs is imminent B. the practical potential of biotechnology in medicine
C. the resolution of immune system rejection issues D. the cost-effectiveness of biological materials
48. Author C. Clarke is most likely to agree that in future societies ________.
A. biological power will play a dominant role in the market
B. all the predictions that he has made will come true
C. the use of fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal will be stopped
D. dependence on non-renewable energy must be reduced
49. Which of the following statements best describes an advantage of biotechnology mentioned in the passage?
A. It relies entirely on synthetic materials for energy production.
B. It provides both economical and eco-friendly solutions.
C. It ensures immediate replacement of all diseased human organs.
D. It has surpassed nuclear power in safety and efficiency.
50. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Biological power will probably live, up to all its promises.
B. Biotechnology is the only way to address our future energy problems.
C. Nuclear power is a limitless, cheap and safe kind of energy.
D. Biological power is less likely to be as threatening as nuclear power
D
Stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.
The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem (自尊). Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their life. They are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for whatever happens in your life. Losers think that everything happens by accident while successful people realize that they are responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to accept and believe. Thoughts and beliefs cause everything. Our attitudes and actions are a result of habits ingrained in us over a period of time. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success depends upon our level of confidence. We are responsible for either reinforcing (强化) good habits or kicking bad habits and consciously replacing them with consistently practiced good habits.
If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing (培育) the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.
In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.
51. People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they ________.
A. are ready to change their minds B. are easily affected by windy weather
C. don’t have the power to face their fate D. can’t exercise control over themselves
52. Losers would think that ________.
A. success is the result of hard work B. working hard will lead to success.
C. their failure is only because of bad luck D. they don’t make efforts to succeed
53. It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that ________.
A. whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes
B. developing confidence is the key to future success
C. thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind
D. setting our expectations is essential before taking action
54. The last paragraph serves as ________.
A. the proof of the author’s points B. the conclusion of the argument
C. an introduction to another topic D. a comparison between two views
55. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Success Is a Choice B. The secrets of Success
C. Develop Our Confidence D. How to Achieve Success

阅读表达
As a little girl, I loved reading until my eyes grew blurry. When preparing for my high school entrance exams, I could focus for hours without pause, like a monk in deep meditation. But in recent years, I’ve felt my ability to concentrate fading away, replaced by endless scrolling on my phone. My attention span now shortens like a snail retracting its body at the slightest touch. Reading for pleasure no longer feels refreshing — it has become a test of endurance. For someone who writes for a living, this is not only sad but also a professional crisis.
So, about a year ago, I made a simple promise to myself: every time I came across an unfamiliar word — whether in a book, an article, or a conversation — I would look it up and write it down. No fancy notebook or special pen was needed; I just kept a growing list on my phone. Every week, I spent a few minutes reviewing these words to help remember them.
This list has now grown to nearly 20 pages, and this small habit has quietly changed me. The reward isn’t about showing off with difficult words — which can sound annoying—but about exercising my brain. Each time I look up and record a word, I feel a gentle stretch, as if a sleepy part of my mind is waking up again. Even if I never use a word like “eidolon,” the very act of noticing and remembering it helps me break away from lazy, shallow thinking.
Of course, keeping this habit isn’t always easy. It can be very inconvenient. When reading on the subway, I often have to suspend my reading in the middle of a paragraph, take out my phone, and type a new word while trying not to bump into others. This slows my reading to a crawl. I also often forget to review my growing word list regularly.
Still, this practice has made my thinking sharper. I find myself choosing more accurate and lively words when I write or speak. There’s a real satisfaction in finding exactly the right word for a thought. In a time when phones often distract us, using mine to learn slowly feels quietly powerful. This habit has given me back the joy of a waking, working mind — something I was afraid I had lost for good.
66. What has replaced the author’s ability to concentrate in recent years?(no more than 10 words)

【答案】46. A 47. B 48. D 49. B 50. D

【答案】51. D 52. C 53. A 54. B 55. A

细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their life. They are leaves tossed by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.(你的自尊水平,始终取决于你在多大程度上能够驾驭自己,进而主宰人生。自尊心较低的人不相信自己有任何力量,或对自己的生活负有任何责任。他们就像随风飘落的树叶,随着天气的任何突然变化而四处飘荡)”可知,自尊心较低的人无法驾驭自己。故选D。
【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Losers think that everything happens by accident while successful people realize that they are responsible.(失败者认为一切都是偶然发生的,而成功人士则意识到他们要对事情负责)”可知,失败者认为一切都是偶然,即失败也是偶然,是运气不好而非自己的问题。故选C。
【53题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Thoughts and beliefs cause everything. Our attitudes and actions are a result of habits ingrained in us over a period of time. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success depends upon our level of confidence.(思想和信念决定一切。我们的态度和行为是长期养成的习惯的结果。一个人通常会达到自己预期的水平。我们有责任设定自己的期望。我们的成功取决于我们的自信程度)”可推断,思想信念决定态度,自信是态度的重要体现,我们的态度是关键,这和选项A的含义(我们是否成功取决于我们的态度)相吻合。故选A。
【54题详解】
推理判断题。根据末段“In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.(简而言之,在你生活的各个方面,无论是财务、身体、情感还是精神层面,你都负有责任。
故选A。

_______________________________________________________________________________
67. Why did the author start keeping a list of new words? (no more than 10 words)
_______________________________________________________________________________
68. According to the author, what is the main benefit of this habit? (no more than 10 words)
