Dear Mike,
I am glad to hear that you are interested in Chinese traditional culture.
I began to learn Chinese calligraphy two years ago. At first I only watched
short videos online. Later I joined the calligraphy club at our school and
practised the eight basic strokes every Wednesday afternoon.
Learning calligraphy has taught me a lot. It is not easy, and I often write
the same character dozens of times. But when I finally write it well, I feel
really proud. It also helps me become more patient.
If you come to China one day, I will take you to the club and we can
practise together. I am sure you will love it.
Yours,
Li Hua

The Kite That Flew Home
Every spring, Grandpa Zhou took his grandson Wei to the hill behind the village to
fly a kite. The kite was old, made of bamboo and paper, with a swallow painted on it.
“Your great-grandfather made it,” Grandpa said. “He flew it when he was a boy.”
Wei liked the kite, but he did not like the walk. The hill was steep, and Grandpa was
slow. One spring, Wei said, “Grandpa, let’s fly it in the field near our home. It’s
much easier.” Grandpa shook his head. “The wind on the hill is different,” he said.
“The kite needs that wind.”
That summer, Grandpa fell ill. Wei went to the hill alone, carrying the kite. He ran
and ran, but the kite would not rise. It fell again and again. Finally, an old man
sitting nearby said, “You are pulling too hard. Let the wind do the work.” Wei tried
again, and this time the kite went up, high and steady.
When he got home, he told Grandpa about it. Grandpa smiled weakly. “Now you know
why we walked up the hill,” he said. “Not every good thing comes easily.”
Grandpa died that winter. The next spring, Wei took the kite to the hill again. As it

Why Do Chinese People Eat Tangyuan?
The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It marks the end
of the Spring Festival celebrations, and it is also the first full moon of the new year.
On this day, families eat tangyuan — small round balls made of sticky rice.
The shape of tangyuan is important. In Chinese, “round” (圆) means “together”.
Eating round tangyuan with your family is a way of saying, “May we always be
together.”
The filling can be sweet or salty. In the south, people often use black sesame or
peanut; in the north, some families prefer meat. Today you can even find fillings
with fruit or chocolate.
Long ago, tangyuan were made at home, one by one, by hand. Now many people buy
them from shops. But the meaning is the same. As one grandmother in Suzhou said,
“It is not just a sweet ball. When the whole family sits around one bowl, that is
the real taste of the festival.”
28. When is the Lantern Festival?
A. On the 15th day of the first lunar month.
B. On the 1st day of the first lunar month.
C. On the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
D. On the last day of the Spring Festival.
29. What does the round shape of tangyuan stand for?
A. Good health. B. Being together.
C. Long life. D. A good harvest.
30. What can we learn about tangyuan fillings?
A. They are always sweet.
B. They are only made of meat.
C. They can be sweet or salty.
D. They are never made with fruit.
31. What does the grandmother in Suzhou mean?
A. Tangyuan are too sweet to eat.
B. Families should stop buying tangyuan.
C. Being together with family is the real meaning of the festival.
D. The Lantern Festival is more important than the Spring Festival.
(D)
Should Students Do Housework?
A recent survey at a middle school shows that only 35% of the students do housework
every day. The rest say they are “too busy with their studies”. This has started a
discussion among parents and teachers: should middle school students do housework?
Some parents say no. They think study comes first, and doing housework may take up
the time that should be used for homework. “I would rather do everything myself than
see my child fall behind,” one mother said.
Others disagree. They believe housework teaches children things that books cannot.
“When a child washes his own clothes, he learns to take care of himself,” a teacher
said. “When he helps cook dinner, he learns what it means to be part of a family.”
Perhaps both sides have a point. Study is important, but so is learning to live.
A child who can solve a maths problem but cannot boil an egg may find life hard.
The real question is not whether to do housework, but how to arrange time well so
that both study and life skills can grow together.
32. What does the survey show?
A. All students do housework every day.
B. About one third of the students do housework every day.
C. Most students hate doing housework.
D. Students have no time to study.
33. Why do some parents say no?
A. They think housework is too hard.
B. They think housework wastes money.
C. They worry it may take up study time.
D. They think children are too young.
34. What do the teachers think of housework?
A. It is a waste of time.
B. It teaches children life skills.
C. It should be done only at weekends.
D. It is less important than homework.
35. What is the writer’s opinion?
A. Students should not do housework at all.
B. Study should always come before everything.
C. Students should arrange time so that study and life skills grow together.
D. Parents should do all the housework for their children.

more than 600 students took part in over twenty events.
One of the most surprising stories came from Class 3. Two years ago, Zhang
Hui could not even run 400 metres. Her classmates often saw her sitting alone
on the bench during PE classes.
“I felt as if everyone could run except me,” she said. “I did not want to go to
PE classes at all.”
Her PE teacher, Mr. Zhao, gave her a small piece of advice: “Run just one
minute more than yesterday. Nothing else.” Zhang Hui started with five minutes
every morning. After six months, she could run three kilometres without
stopping.
In this year’s Sports Week, she took part in the 1,500-metre race. She did not
win, but she finished in the middle of more than forty runners, and the whole
class cheered her name.
“I am still not the fastest,” she said with a smile. “But I have learned that
one small step every day is enough to change a person.”
