第二节 读后续写 (满分 25 分) 。
67. I was curious about the exchange. So I went immediately to Laddie and asked him what had happened. The truth was that the little girl came up to him and gave him a quarter, so he gave her two quarters in return. He said he wanted to show her an idea that when people are generous, they will receive more than they give. I felt shocked by what Laddie said and got lost in thought. Minutes later, I had a question and wanted to know its answer.
I asked Laddie why he refused to take my money and kept smiling. He explained he wanted to help me do something but he couldn't take credit for what he did not do. He continued to tell me about the reason why he kept smiling to the people in the street. That's because he wanted to pay something back for their kindness. What a generous man he was, even though he still was stuck in his life. However, he had a great spirit.

A non-profit group in Greece, called Gentle Carousel Greece, uses small horses to provide pet therapy to sick and disabled people.
The horses are bred as miniature animals and stand about 72 centimeters tall. They are specially trained to provide comfort to disabled children, sick people, or older adults. During two years of training, the horses are taught how to work in confined environments with children and adults with special health needs. Caregivers say the horses provide a form of pet therapy that offers valuable social interactions and new learning experiences.
Gentle Carousel Greece is run by 68-year-old Mina Karagianni. She learned about the Florida-based organization over the Internet while she was searching for information on a pony she had rescued. After learning about the groupˈs activities, she got the idea to start her own operation.
So, she made changes to her land to care for the horses. She turned her property into what she called a "Magic Garden". She had everything she needed to care for the horses. She also ran a small restaurant and party area. Karagianni launched her Greek group in 2014. The organization has served about 12,000 children since it began.
The horses were recently brought to a school outside Athens for children with special needs. Nine-year-old Josifina Topa Mazuch seemed drawn to Ivy, a small gray horse standing no taller than her pink wheelchair. She ended up leading the animal down a school hallway. "They made me feel really happy, and I really want them to come again," she said.
At the special needs school, teacher Eleni Volikaki said she saw "incredible" reactions from the children. "It seems that something awakens their senses," Volikaki noted. The horses could often get students to make more progress than with other therapy methods.
Although facing financial difficulties, Karagianni keeps going because she sees the great benefits the children and adults receive from the animals. She plans to seek help and inspire more people to get involved.

If you want to seem sincere and receive more responses to your texts, spell out words instead of abbreviating them, according to a new research published by the American Psychological Association.
Researchers conducted eight experiments with a total of more than 5,300 participants using various methods. Across the experiments, individuals who used texting abbreviations were perceived as more①insincere and were less likely to receive replies because they were seen as putting less effort in text conversations. The research was published online in the Journal of Experimental Psychology.
"In daily interactions, we often encounter people who could be considered good texters or poor texters," said lead researcher David Fang, a doctoral student at Stanford University. "We thought texters might like abbreviations because it would convey an informal sense of closeness, so we were surprised that abbreviations created negative perceptions about people who use them."
Texting has become a dominant form of digital communication, and most texters use some abbreviations, such as IDK for "I donˈt know" or GOAT for "greatest of all time". In a preliminary survey by the researchers, 99% of respondents reported they used texting abbreviations, and 84% of them believed that others would like abbreviations. But people might not realize that abbreviations come with costs.
In the experiments, texters who used abbreviations received shorter and fewer responses and were less likely to receive contact information from the other texter. Texting abbreviations could contribute to②loneliness if people find that social bonds weaken over time because they receive less frequent or positive replies to their texts, Fang said. But he doesnˈt believe people should stop using abbreviations altogether.
"We often③tailor the effort we put into conversations to match the significance of the relationship. In some cases, it makes sense to invest less effort and accept being perceived as less sincere, like quickly texting with a delivery driver," Fang said. "However, our findings are especially relevant when we want to appear more sincere and strengthen social ties, such as at the beginning of a relationship or when we need to make a good impression."
28.What was unexpected about the research results according to David Fang?
A. The research attracted over 5,300 participants.
B. People cared so much about how others texted.
C. The texters using abbreviations were considered insincere.
D. Abbreviations were considered to convey a sense of closeness.
29.How is a recipient likely to react to messages full of abbreviations?
A. Respond with shorter messages.
B. Ignore the messages.
C. Spell out responses in full words.
D. Stop using abbreviations.
30.Why is a delivery driver mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To illustrate the fact that abbreviations are widely accepted.
B. To indicate abbreviations can be used in some interactions.
C. To emphasize the importance of sincerity in communication.
D. To explain the necessity to put more efforts into conversations.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Pros and Cons of Abbreviations in Texting
B. IDK Is OK, Why Bother with "I Donˈt Know"?
C. The Hidden Cost of Abbreviations in Texting
D. Shortcuts to Better Interpersonal Relationships

Will your job be done by a robot in the future? Bank of England economists predict that almost half of all UK jobs are under threat from automation. But could even the admired profession of teaching soon have to compete against powerful electronic educators?
At first glance, teaching might seem impossible to be replaced by robots. Teachers use a range of soft skills that machines find hard to copy exactly. They judge pupilsˈ needs and tailor feedback accordingly. They adapt materials to make them more engaging and effective. And they provide kind care: looking out for students who drop behind or disturb the class.
Despite that, some believe the future of education will be technological. Futurist Thomas Frey, from Business Insider magazine, predicts that “by 2030 the largest company on the Internet is going to be an education-based company that we havenˈt heard of yet.”
He thinks that “bots”—online robot teachers—will make education so efficient that students will be able to compress(压缩)an entire undergraduate degree into six months of learning. A bot learns what your “idiosyncrasies”“ interests” and “reference points” are, “and it figures out how to teach you in a faster and faster way over time,” according to Frey.
Whether or not such incredible speeds will be reached over the next decade, there has been a huge increase in online learning platforms. Companies such as Udemy and Khan Academy produce courses that allow millions to learn at home for free at their own pace. But there are limitations. Without the face-to-face inspiration of a classroom environment, the majority of students fail to complete online courses. How to keep motivation to learn is one more skill that online teachers will need to master.
Indeed, Frey admits there is some way to go: “Nobody has quite cracked the code for the future of education.” What do teachers themselves think about this? Professor Donald Clark from Derby University in the UK thinks that we should accept change, even though people will lose their jobs.
32.Whatˈs the second paragraph mainly about?
A. Teaching by robots can be replaced.
B. The advantages of teaching by human teachers.
C. Human teachers will be replaced by robots.
D. The potential of the electronic educators.
33.What does the underlined word “idiosyncrasies” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Personalities. B. Senses. C. Nationalities. D. Families.
34.Why are Udemy and Khan Academy mentioned?
A. To tell how online learning is progressing.
B. To show the significance of online learning.
C. To explain how online learning works.
D. To suggest the shortcomings of online learning.
35.What might be talked about following the last paragraph?
A. How robots will change in the future.
B. How artificial intelligence will destroy jobs.
C. How educators will meet the future challenge.
D. How electronic educators will lose their jobs.

A while ago, when I was a 25-year-old youth, I traveled across the United States on a journey to make a film. During that trip, I ended up in Seattle where I met Laddie McCrea.
Laddie was a hobo(流浪汉). He was about 60-70 years old and looked 100. Laddie had shoulder length white hair covered with weeds from the previous night's bedding(垫草). He was in rags with an unpleasant smell of alcohol and garbage.
When I first met Laddie, he was standing on a busy downtown Seattle sidewalk. He greeted every passer-by with a smile, a pleasant greeting and an extended palm(手掌). Each day, society was rushing past Laddie, either unaware of his existence or avoiding him, a smelly, begging hobo.
I found Laddie to be an excellent character for my movie, so I wanted to pay him to allow me to stand in the background and film him. However, He rejected the money but accepted my requirement. Then, I spent three days hidden among the crowd, filming Laddie. Most of the time he was unaware of my existence. Each day he stood in a busy section of town greeting the world with a smile and an extended palm, in order to earn enough change for the evening's night cap.
One special day, as I watched from a bench off in the distance, a young girl, around 6 or 7, with a pretty dress, approached Laddie from behind and tugged on his shirt. Laddie turned to the girl. She then reached up and handed him something. At that, Laddie showed his happiness and reached in his pocket, gave her something and the girl ran back to her parents excitedly showing them what she had received.
