After I had pictured it over and over again in my mind, the big day finally arrived: my first day at senior high! I woke up early and rushed out of the door in my eagerness to get to know my new school.
The campus was still quiet when I arrived, so I decided to explore a bit. I was looking at the photos on the noticeboard when I heard a voice behind me. “New here?” Turning around, I saw a white-haired man. “Yes,” I replied. “I’m wondering what life is going to be like here.” “Don’t worry,” he gave me a smile. “You’ll soon find out.”
How true these words were! When my English teacher stepped into the classroom, I was surprised to see the same man I had met earlier.
“Good morning, everyone. Before we start, please come to the front one by one and introduce yourself to the class. I’ll go first...”
“What?” I tried to turn on my brain but the engine just wouldn’t start. “I should say my name, of course. But what else? What could I say to make a good first impression? Something about my insect collection, perhaps.” I was organizing my words in my head when the girl next to me gave me a nudge. “It’s your turn!”
With butterflies in my stomach, I breathed deeply. “Hi, I’m Meng Hao.” Everyone started laughing. I looked at them in panic. “Nice to know we share the same name,” said my new teacher. I had been too nervous to pay attention when he introduced himself! Although I was embarrassed, his words made me a lot more relaxed!
When we had all introduced ourselves, Mr Meng said, “Well done, everyone! I know this isn’t easy for many of you. But this is just the kind of thing you are going to face at senior high. Challenges like this might sometimes put you under pressure. But it all depends on what you do. Keep calm and be prepared. That way, you’ll make the most of your time at senior high.”
People say, “Well begun, half done.” I guess this was a good beginning to my new school life.

C
Many senior high students know the feeling: you lie in bed at eleven, decide to check your phone “for five minutes”, and the next time you look up it is one o’clock. A recent study of 1,200 students in Jiangsu found that those who used their phones for more than two hours after ten in the evening went to sleep almost an hour later than the others, and felt sleepy in class four mornings a week.
Why is this? Doctors say there are two reasons. The first is the light from the screen. Bright light tells the brain that the day is still going on, so the body waits before it feels ready to rest. The second is what the students are doing. Games, short videos and group chats keep the mind excited; even after the phone is put away, the brain is still busy with what it has just seen.
Li Lan, a school doctor in Nanjing, has noticed something else. “The students who sleep least are not always the ones who study most,” she says. “They are the ones who never plan their evening.” In her school, students who wrote down a simple plan — homework first, then twenty minutes of phone time, then bed — reported falling asleep about thirty minutes earlier after only three weeks.
Dr Li does not ask students to give up their phones. “A phone is not an enemy,” she says. “It is simply a bad companion at bedtime.” Her advice is practical: leave the phone outside the bedroom, or at least out of arm’s reach, and do something quiet for ten minutes before lying down — reading a few pages, or writing down the three things you want to do tomorrow.
8. What did the study of 1,200 students find?
A. Most students go to bed after one o’clock.
B. Late phone users slept later and felt sleepy in class.
C. Short videos are the most popular with teenagers.
D. A phone is a bad companion at bedtime.
9. Why does the light from the screen make it hard to fall asleep?
A. It hurts the eyes of young people.
B. It makes the phone too hot to hold.
C. It tells the brain the day is still on.
D. It makes the screen too bright to see.
10. What does Li Lan’s finding suggest about the students who sleep least?
A. They study harder than their classmates.
B. They seldom use phones at night.
C. They need help planning their time.
D. They always stay up past midnight.
11. What does the underlined phrase “out of arm’s reach” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Not easy to see.
B. Not easy to charge.
C. Not easy to repair.
D. Not easy to touch.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】文章主要讲述了睡前玩手机影响高中生睡眠的原因,并给出实用改善睡眠的建议。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“A recent study of 1,200 students in Jiangsu found that those who used their phones for more than two hours after ten in the evening went to sleep almost an hour later than the others, and felt sleepy in class four mornings a week.(江苏一项针对1200名学生的最新研究发现,晚上10点后使用手机超过两小时的学生,入睡时间比其他人晚近一小时,每周有四个早上在课堂上犯困)”可知,深夜玩手机的学生入睡更晚且课堂上容易犯困。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Bright light tells the brain that the day is still going on, so the body waits before it feels ready to rest.(明亮的光线会告诉大脑白天仍在继续,所以身体会等待一段时间才会准备好休息)”可知,屏幕光线会告知大脑白天仍在进行,导致难以入睡。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“They are the ones who never plan their evening.(他们是那些从不规划晚间时间的人)”可知,睡眠最少的学生需要得到时间规划方面的帮助。
【11题详解】
词义猜测题。根据最后一段中“Her advice is practical: leave the phone outside the bedroom, or at least out of arm’s reach, and do something quiet for ten minutes before lying down — reading a few pages, or writing down the three things you want to do tomorrow.(她的建议很实用:把手机放在卧室外,或者至少放在手臂够不到的地方,然后在躺下前安静地做十分钟的事 —— 读几页书,或者写下你明天想做的三件事)”可知,该建议让人把手机放在卧室外或手臂够不到的地方,因此“out of arm’s reach”意为“手臂够不到的地方”,也就是不容易碰到。
D
Can music help you concentrate at work? Researchers from the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff conducted a new study, and it has some interesting results.
The research examined the ability of 25 people, aged 18 to 30, to remember information while listening to various sounds. In one task they had to remember a list of eight consonant (辅音) letters, which were read to them.
Participants in the study were tested under three different conditions: in a quiet environment, while listening to music they liked, and while listening to music they didn’t like. The participants generally did better when they were working in silence. The background music seemed to make memorization and recall more difficult. However, scientists also found that listening to music before doing the tests seemed to help concentration.
“Despite describing their self-selected music as more pleasant, their performance was poor, just as it was when they listened to music they disliked,” explained one of the researchers. So, even if you’re listening to music you like, it’ll still get in the way of your work.
This would appear to go against the findings of scientists who have researched what is popularly known as the “Mozart Effect”. This concept was invented by French scientist Dr. Alfred A. Tomatitis in 1991. Tomatitis published a book, Why Mozart?, which described what he believed were the healing powers of listening to Mozart’s music.
He also suggested that Mozart’s music could help brain development. Later experiments suggested it might enhance children’s spatial (空间的) intelligence, leading to a widespread belief that classical music could improve a child’s IQ. The governor of the state of Georgia even once supported spending over $100,000 annually to supply classical CDs to every newborn in the state.
Another study seemed to further contradict the idea that music could help with concentration. The researchers found that surveyed university students mostly preferred studying in silence. Those listening to music preferred instrumental songs, saying that lyrics (歌词) are annoying.
So, if you’re studying for an exam, turn off your music!
12. Under which condition did participants perform best in the University of Wales study?
A. Enjoying their favorite music. B. Listening to disliked music.
C. Playing music after the memory task. D. Working in a quiet environment.
13. What led to the popularity of the “Mozart Effect”?
A. The government’s generous support.
B. Its connection with children’s intelligence.
C. Its power to cure IQ-related diseases.
D. The influence brought by a scientist’s book.
14. Why does the writer mention the survey of university students?
A. To compare ways of using music
B. To prove music’s healing power.
C. To show students’ preference in music.
D. To add evidence against music for focus.
15. What is the author’s attitude to studying to music during exam preparation?
A. Negative. B. Neutral. C. Supportive. D. Uninterested.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. A
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了一项研究表明背景音乐不利于记忆,反驳莫扎特效应,建议备考学习时关掉音乐。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Participants in the study were tested under three different conditions: in a quiet environment, while listening to music they liked, and while listening to music they didn’t like. The participants generally did better when they were working in silence.(研究参与者在三种不同环境下接受测试:安静环境、听喜欢的音乐、听不喜欢的音乐。参与者在安静环境下工作时整体表现更好。)”可知,参与者在安静环境中的表现最好。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段中的“He also suggested that Mozart’s music could help brain development. Later experiments suggested it might enhance children’s spatial (空间的) intelligence, leading to a widespread belief that classical music could improve a child’s IQ. (他还提出莫扎特的音乐有助于大脑发育。后续实验表明它或许可以提升儿童的空间智力,这使得人们普遍相信古典音乐能够提高孩子的智商。)”可知,莫扎特效应流行是因为它和儿童智力相关。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第七段中的“Another study seemed to further contradict the idea that music could help with concentration. The researchers found that surveyed university students mostly preferred studying in silence. Those listening to music preferred instrumental songs, saying that lyrics are annoying.(另一项研究似乎进一步反驳了音乐有助于集中注意力的观点。研究人员发现,受访大学生大多更喜欢在安静环境学习。听音乐的人偏爱纯音乐,称歌词很烦人。)”可知,作者引用大学生调查是为增加论据,证明音乐不利于集中注意力。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第八段中的“So, if you’re studying for an exam, turn off your music!(所以,如果你正在备考,关掉你的音乐!)”可知,作者认为备考学习不应该听音乐,对此持否定态度。
