My First Month in Senior High
On September 1st, I walked into No. 1 Senior High School. My hands were cold and my heart was beating fast — I was really nervous. I carried a big bag with new textbooks and followed the students to my classroom.
The first hard thing was military training. We stood under the hot sun for 40 minutes. My legs hurt so much that I wanted to sit down. Then, Li Mei, a girl next to me, said quietly, “Come on, we can hold on together.” Her words made me strong. After that, we helped each other tidy our uniforms and shared our water. Slowly, I wasn’t shy anymore, and we began to laugh.
The class meeting was another important day. Our teacher asked everyone to talk about a “small goal” for this term. At first, I was afraid to speak. But when I saw my classmates talking bravely, I stood up and said, “I want to join the English club and practice speaking.” The class clapped loudly. Later, two classmates told me they wanted to join me.
Now, a month has passed. I don’t feel nervous when I walk in the school. Senior high isn’t only about exams and homework — it’s about making good friends and trying new things. I know this is just the start, and I’m ready for it.

During this year’s 8-day National Day Holiday, tourists across China enjoyed a variety of cultural activities —from traditional to modern—and discovered many new travel destinations (目的地).
Items on China’s national list of intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) were popular among travelers in many places. In Lantian County, Shaanxi Province in northwest China, tourists were surprised by the art of Dawaz, which means aerial tightrope (空中钢丝)walking in the Uygur language. At the same time, in Changzhou City in east China, music festivals attracted large crowds of visitors. The local government took steps to make visitors feel comfortable: it arranged 500 coaches for long-distance travel, set up over 10,000 free parking spaces, and extended subway operation hours until 11:30 p.m.
Big cities were not the only places attracting visitors during the holiday. Travelers preferred natural scenery, less crowded spots, and cost-effective travel experiences. Data from Ctrip(携程), a major Chinese travel booking platform, showed that travel orders for small cities rose by 140% year-on-year, which was much higher than the growth rate for big cities.
Wu Sa, a leader from the Economic Research Institute, said that big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Chengdu remained popular as usual. But he also noted that many travelers were heading to new, less well-known places.
Science and space-related sites also became popular travel spots this holiday. These included the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China and the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope in Guizhou Province, southwest China. “I mainly wanted to take my child to see China’s advanced space technology and the development trend of big data, so he can understand our motherland’s advanced technology,” said a tourist named Hu Wannping.
8.What made tourists go to Changzhou City?
A.Music festivals held there.
B.Aerial tightrope walking shows.
C.Celebrations of traditional cultural events.

9.What does the underlined word “cost-effective” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Only for poor people. B.Costing a lot of money.
C.Reasonable in price. D.Needing much time to book.
10.What can be inferred from the text?
A.Tourists are open-minded as to the choices of travelling.
B.Scientific and space projects received the least attention.
C.Orders for major destinations in big cities are decreasing.
D.The growth of visitors is causing various social problems.
11.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Cultural Events Across China During Holidays
B.New Choices of Travel Destinations on National Day
C.Well-Known Cities Are More Popular among Visitors
D.Traditional Culture Attracts Tourists around the World

A sleepover (过夜) program, which is designed to make kids believe that their favorite toys enjoy reading, can help encourage children to pick up more books, a new study suggests.
Toys sleepover programs are designed to get children interested in books. Children take their toys to a library for the night. At this point, workers and volunteers take photos of the toys which explore the library and read books. The next day, the children collect their toys and the photos of what the toys did during the night. They are given the books their toys chose to read.
It was found that before the sleepover the children did not spend time looking at the books in their play area at preschool. Immediately after the sleepover, the number of children who read to the toys was higher than the number who did not, but after three days the effect decreased gradually.
The researchers also tested a method for sustaining the effect. They reminded the children of the sleepover a month later, by hiding the toys and showing them the photos again the next day. This simple method brought an increase in the number of children reading to their toys.
The study proves for the first time that children who take part in sleepover programs read picture books to their toys more. “We wanted to know if there really was an effect, and if so, how long it lasts. Surprisingly, not only did the children show interest in the books, but they also began to read to their toys. This means that a new behavior pattern appeared that the children hadn’t had before. We did not expect anything like this,” said one of the researchers.
Reading is important for the development of children’s language skills and imagination. When parents read to their children, it is a passive way of reading for the child. However, when children read to their toys, it is a more active, self-directed way of reading, helping them develop into more active readers, researchers said.
12.What is the purpose of the sleepover program?
A.To develop children’ s language skills.
B.To help children to sleep well.
C.To encourage children to read more.
D.To guide children to form a good sleeping habit.
13.What do children do in the sleepover program?
A.Go around the library with their toys.
B.Sleep with their toys.
C.Read together with their toys.
D.Take their toys to the library.
14.What made the researchers surprised after the study of the sleepover program?
A.Children showed no interest in the books.
B.The effect of the sleepover program could last long.
C.Children began to read to their toys on their own.
D.Whether the sleepover program had an effect remained unknown.
15.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Toys Are Kids’ Best Reading Partners
B.A Sleepover Program Encourages Kids to Read
C.Active Reading Improves Kids’ imagination
D.New Ways to Develop Kids’ Language Skills

Choosing the Right School Club for You
High school is a time to explore interests, make friends, and develop new skills. Joining a school club is one of the best ways to do this. 16 However, it can be hard to decide which one fits you best. Here are some practical tips to help you make the right choice.
17 What activities make you lose track of time? Do you enjoy painting, playing music, or writing? Are you interested in science experiments or helping the community? Your true interests will make club activities more enjoyable and meaningful. For example, if you love nature, the Environmental Club might be a great fit.
Consider your time and schedule. It’s important to consider how long you can spend on club activities. Some clubs require weekly meetings, while others have events on weekends or after school. If you have a busy schedule with homework and part-time jobs, choose a club that doesn’t take up too much time. 18
Don’t be afraid to try something new. Joining a club that you’re curious about can be a great adventure. You might discover a hidden talent or a new interest that you never knew you had. 19 Most of them end up loving the experience. For example, a quiet student might find joy in the Drama Club by performing on stage.
Trust your feelings. After considering all these factors (因素), go with the club that makes you feel excited. A club that matches your interests will keep you motivated (有动机的) to take part. 20 If a club doesn’t feel right for you, it’s okay to try another one.
A.Ask for advice from others around you.
B.Think about your hobbies and interests.
C.There are different clubs for you to choose from.
D.It’s not a good idea to join too many clubs at once.
E.Many students join clubs outside their comfort zones.
