Happy birthday to the Qinghai-Xizang Railway! Located on the “roof of the world”, the 1,956-kilometer railway had its 20th birthday this July.
Travel between the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau(高原)and the rest of China used to be difficult. In the 1950s, it took animals three or four months to carry goods from Qinghai to Lhasa, Xizang. Now, trains can do it in 48 hours.
The railway has helped businesses grow. Near Xining Railway Station, a market for caterpillar fungus(冬虫夏草)has developed. In the past, business people had to drive for days to Xizang to collect the medical plants. Now, people in Xizang can bring the medical plants by train, and packages from the market can reach many parts of China the next day, Xinhua reported.
Lhasa West Station has changed too. The area used to be open land with dirt roads. Now, it’s a modern transport center with 11 lines that carry cars, electric machines, vegetables, fruits and many other goods. Local products, such as apples from Nyingchi and Shannan, are also sold to Nepal by rail.
To protect the local environment, many parts of the railway are built on bridges so that wild animals can pass safely below. Today, the number of Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊)in Xizang has grown from about 70,000 in the 1990s to more than 300,000. “Now, you can often see them running alongside the railway,” Hao Baojun, who has worked on the line for 40 years, told Xinhua.
But the changes do not stop there. Earlier this year, China started a new power project for the railway. Once it is finished, more trains on the line will run on electricity instead of diesel(柴油).
25. How does the writer show changes in transportation in Paragraph 2?
A. By telling stories. B. By giving reasons.

27. Why are many parts of the railway built on bridges?
A. To protect local environment and wild animals.
B. To stop wild animals from walking across the railway.
C. To make trains run faster.
D. To save money when building the railway.
28. What will happen after the new power project is finished?
A. No trains will run on the railway. B. More trains will use electricity.
C. No trains will use diesel. D. All the trains will stop using electricity.

Two Chinese Mathematicians Make History at the 2026 Fields Medal Ceremony
Known as “the Nobel Prize of mathematics”, the 2026 Fields Medals were announced on July 23 at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. Four young scientists got this world’s top prize for math.
Two winners, Deng Yu and Wang Hong, are Chinese and have caught great attention from media around the world. This is an important moment that has never happened before. For the first time, Chinese mathematicians won this award, ending Western countries’ control of this famous prize for many years. Both finished their college studies at Peking University and then went abroad to continue their research.
Given by the International Mathematical Union every four years, the Fields Medal is only open to scientists under 40. Every winner gets two official prizes: a 14-karat gold medal with a picture of Archimedes and 15,000 Canadian dollars. The prize honors important new discoveries in different areas of mathematics.
Deng Yu works as a professor at the University of Chicago. He showed great talent in math when he was young. He won a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad during high school and studied for his bachelor’s degree at Peking University. His important research made great progress on a key problem in Hilbert’s Sixth Problem. He created strict mathematical models to connect tiny molecular movements and large fluid motion, linking pure mathematics and physics.
At the same time, Wang Hong is 35, the youngest winner. She entered Peking University when she was 16. Now she is a Silver Professor at New York University’s Courant Institute. She solved the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a problem no one could work out for a hundred years. It sits at the crossing of harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. She said her success came from teamwork. Her mathematical ideas help create new developments in cryptography and computer science.
The fact that they both studied at Peking University shows that China’s basic mathematics education has made great progress. Their historic success broadens worldwide top-level mathematical research and encourages young people to study basic science subjects.

C. By making a comparison. D. By listing numbers only.
26. What can we know about Lhasa West Station?
A. It was a modern transport center long ago.
B. It now has 11 lines to carry different kinds of goods.
C. People can only send apples to Nepal by rail here.
D. It mainly sells local fruits and vegetables to local people.

29. What can we know about the Fields Medal from Paragraph 3?
A. It is given to old and experienced math experts.
B. It rewards creative and valuable math research results.
C. Winners can get a gold medal and 15,000 US dollars as their prize.
D. It is held once every five years.
30. What can we learn about Wang Hong’s success?
A. She finished her research by herself.
B. Her study at a foreign university was the key to her success.
C. Teamwork played an important role in her achievement.
D. She solved the century-old problem when she was 16.
31. What can we infer from the two mathematicians’ learning experiences?
A. Studying abroad is necessary for math learners.
B. Young people can only succeed by solving old math problems.
C. Math talent is the secret of great researchers.
D. China’s basic mathematics education can lay a solid foundation for top math research.

Time poverty (贫穷) can happen when study, work, or social duties take too much of a person’s time, leaving little or no time for fun or personal interests. It can also happen when people feel like they have no time to reach their goals or finish tasks before the deadline (截止日期).
People who don’t have enough time fail to perform well at work and remain nervous. Too much stress can harm mental (精神的) health. What’s more, less quality time with friends and family can make a person feel lonelier. So how can you stop being time poor?
Manage your time properly. The time wasted every week can become longer if you don’t realize it. In order to make better use of your time, you can make careful plans before you actually spend it. Try to find out things that are not important now and put them off. In this way, you can stick to your plan and focus better on your work.
Make quality time a true value in your life. It’s important to focus on how you spend your time with someone or doing something. Pay attention to one thing at a time. For example, when you are spending time with your family, enjoy yourself instead of worrying about work.
We all have the same 24 hours each day. By managing your time properly and enjoying quality time, you can make the most of your life and become the real owner of it.
