Staying connected while traveling is easier than ever — here’s a guide to the best ways to stay online and in touch no matter where your adventures take you.
1. Buy a Local SIM Card
Yes, it’s easy, affordable, and widely available in most countries. Once you land, head to a convenience store and pick up a SIM card. You’ll often find these at airports, and they usually come with a variety of data plans. A few dollars could get you anywhere from 1 to 10 GB of data — or even more.
Local SIMs are great if you’re travelling in a single country or region for an extended period. Not only do they give you a local number, which is helpful for booking accommodations or restaurant reservations, but they also keep your internet speed fast and reliable.
2. Utilise Public Wi-Fi
Ah, the free Wi-Fi temptation. It’s everywhere — airports, cafés, shopping malls, and even on public transportation. It’s convenient, no doubt, and perfect for quick updates, checking maps, or sending a few emails. But be cautious. Public Wi-Fi can also be a hotspot for hackers.
To safeguard yourself, always use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN encodes your data and keeps your online activity private.
3. Download Maps and Offline Content in Advance
Sure, this one doesn’t provide live internet access, but it’s a great way to stay connected to essential information without being online. You can also download movies, music, or books to enjoy without Wi-Fi. Imagine you’re lost in a city with no signal and no clue where you are. Offline maps can be a lifesaver! They also reduce your reliance on data when travelling in areas with limited connectivity.
1. What advantage does a local SIM card have?
A. It offers fast internet. B. It is free of charge.
C. It works worldwide. D. It includes VPN service.
2. Why is a VPN recommended for public Wi-Fi?
A. It improves Wi-Fi speed greatly. B. It shields users’ data from hackers.
C. It finds nearby Wi-Fi hotspots. D. It offers free mobile data.
3. What can we conclude about offline content?
A. It works better with high-speed Wi-Fi. B. It greatly lowers travelling expenses.
C. It needs in-app payment for use. D. It helps when network is poor.

When Farin Kamangar was training as a physician in the 1980s, he asked patients about three lifestyle factors that could affect their health: alcohol, smoking and coffee. Though coffee didn’t have the same associations as smoking or drinking, Kamangar says, “the connotation was that this is not a good thing.”
Recently, though, coffee drinkers keep getting good news.
In 2026 alone, studies have found that coffee could reduce dementia risk, protect your liver and improve your gut microbiome. Kamangar, now an epidemiologist at Morgan State University, co-authored a 2025 literature review that drew on more than 100 studies and concluded “that moderate coffee intake is more beneficial than harmful across a wide range of health outcomes.” The American Heart Association has also acknowledged that coffee does little harm and may even benefit heart function. Systematic studies of the relationship started back in the late 1940s. So, why does the research keep changing?
According to geneticist Marilyn Cornelis, scientists are simply conducting research better. In the 1970s and 1980s, several studies found negative relationships between coffee and health, including a popular 1981 paper that found an association between coffee drinking and pancreatic cancer. The study interviewed around 1,000 patients at a hospital and found that those with pancreatic cancer drank more coffee — but many members of the control group had other medical issues that prevented them from drinking coffee at all. Subsequent studies, including one by the same research team, failed to replicate the results.
Modern researchers rely heavily on long-term group studies, which monitor tens of thousands of participants’ daily routines and health conditions over decades. Gregory Marcus argues that this type of evidence-based research has led to a “pendulum swing on caffeine,” and more accurately reflects the link between health and everyday habits.
Even so, long-term group studies carry obvious limitations. Most participants in such research consume coffee rather than other caffeinated products. Researchers have abundant data on coffee, but popular caffeinated drinks like energy drinks remain poorly studied. Much more evidence is required before scientists can reliably assess how these other caffeine sources influence public health.
8. What did Kamangar’s 2025 literature review suggest?
A. Coffee cures serious illnesses. B. Coffee equals alcohol in harm.
C. Over 100 patients joined the study. D. Moderate coffee does more good.
9. Why was the 1981 study’s result unreliable?
A. It failed to collect enough coffee-drinking patients.
B. Its control group could not drink coffee due to illnesses.
C. Researchers mixed up data from different hospitals.
D. Participants hid their real drinking habits on purpose.
10. Why does the writer mention energy drinks in the last paragraph?
A. To prove their greater benefits. B. To reject all caffeinated drinks.
C. To show weak related evidence. D. To explain coffee’s popularity.
11. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Lifestyle factors for public health B. Caffeine drinks among youngsters
C. Errors in 1980s early research D. Shifting views on coffee’s effects
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了人们对咖啡健康影响的认识从过去认为有害到如今认为适量有益的观点转变及其原因。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Kamangar, now an epidemiologist at Morgan State University, co-authored a 2025 literature review that drew on more than 100 studies and concluded “that moderate coffee intake is more beneficial than harmful across a wide range of health outcomes.”(现为摩根州立大学流行病学家的卡曼加尔参与撰写了一篇2025年的文献综述,该综述参考了100多项研究,并得出结论:“适量摄入咖啡在广泛的健康结果上利大于弊。”)”可知,卡曼加尔2025年的文献综述表明适量喝咖啡益处更多。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The study interviewed around 1,000 patients at a hospital and found that those with pancreatic cancer drank more coffee — but many members of the control group had other medical issues that prevented them from drinking coffee at all. Subsequent studies, including one by the same research team, failed to replicate the results.(该研究在一家医院采访了约1000名患者,发现胰腺癌患者喝咖啡更多——但对照组中许多成员有其他健康问题,导致他们根本无法喝咖啡。随后的研究,包括同一研究团队的一项研究,未能重复出这些结果。)”可知,1981年研究结果不可靠是因为其对照组中许多人因疾病而不能喝咖啡。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Most participants in such research consume coffee rather than other caffeinated products. Researchers have abundant data on coffee, but popular caffeinated drinks like energy drinks remain poorly studied. Much more evidence is required before scientists can reliably assess how these other caffeine sources influence public health.(此类研究中的大多数参与者喝的是咖啡,而不是其他含咖啡因产品。研究人员拥有关于咖啡的大量数据,但像能量饮料这样流行的含咖啡因饮料仍然研究不足。在科学家能够可靠评估这些其他咖啡因来源如何影响公共健康之前,还需要更多证据。)”可知,作者提到能量饮料是为了表明相关证据仍然薄弱。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第一段“When Farin Kamangar was training as a physician in the 1980s, he asked patients about three lifestyle factors that could affect their health: alcohol, smoking and coffee. Though coffee didn’t have the same associations as smoking or drinking, Kamangar says, “the connotation was that this is not a good thing.”(20世纪80年代,法林·卡曼加尔在接受医生培训时,会询问患者三个可能影响健康的生活方式因素:酒精、吸烟和咖啡。尽管咖啡与吸烟或饮酒没有相同的关联,但卡曼加尔说:“其含义是这不是一件好事。”)”、第三段中“In 2026 alone, studies have found that coffee could reduce dementia risk, protect your liver and improve your gut microbiome.(仅在2026年,研究就发现咖啡可以降低痴呆风险、保护肝脏并改善肠道微生物组。)”和第四段中“According to geneticist Marilyn Cornelis, scientists are simply conducting research better.(遗传学家玛丽莲·科内利斯认为,科学家只是把研究做得更好了。)”
D
To have a coffee delivered to an office in Shanghai, simply ask one of China’s AI super-apps to choose a cup of coffee on your behalf, press “confirm” and the beverage will be on its way. Handing over such important decisions brings risks, of course. When a reporter asked one popular AI app to deliver a “special coffee”, he received a rose-petal-vinegar-flavoured one.
Nevertheless, the pace with which such services are being adopted in China is remarkable. The country is speeding towards a future in which AI chooses, purchases and delivers many of the goods and services people consume, greatly changing its digital economy in the process.
For China’s tech giants, such as Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent, AI super-apps may offer an attractive new source of growth at a time when consumer spending in China is anaemic. Adjusted operating profit in Alibaba’s Chinese e-commerce division was down by 40% year on year in the first quarter of 2026. And although the company’s cloud business is booming, as enterprises spend more on its AI infrastructure, that growth requires enormous investment, putting pressure on cashflows.
Tech giants are also making such moves for self-protection. ByteDance tried an AI-powered device in December when it launched a smartphone with ZTE, a device-maker, which came pre-loaded with an AI assistant. But despite an initial burst of enthusiasm, with around 30,000 of the devices produced, the project was a failure, in part because Alibaba and Tencent blocked it from using their payment platforms.
That will not stop others from trying. Xiaomi and Huawei already have hundreds of millions of users. If Alibaba and Tencent attempted to slow down their AI-driven business development, China’s regulators might well intervene. As China’s internet enters its next era, a bitter fight for dominance is coming.
12. What can we learn from the coffee-ordering example?
A. AI super-apps avoid ordering errors. B. AI decisions may have unexpected results.
C. AI coffee delivery is nationwide. D. The reporter loved the special coffee.
13. What does the underlined word “anaemic” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Weak B. Sharply rising C. Fully recovered D. Completely destroyed
14. Why did ByteDance’s smartphone project with ZTE turn out to be a failure?
A. It faced tight funding limits. B. Its AI assistant drew public dislike.
C. Other firms blocked its payment access. D. ByteDance shifted focus to software.
15. What is the main theme of the text?
A. The risks of using AI super-apps for daily online shopping.
B. Reasons for Alibaba’s falling profit in its e-commerce department.
C. Advantages of smartphones equipped with artificial-intelligence assistants.
D. Tech giants’ pursuit of AI super-apps and the coming fierce competition.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. D
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍国内科技巨头布局AI超级应用,分析背后动因以及行业即将迎来激烈竞争的局面。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“When a reporter asked one popular AI app to deliver a “special coffee”, he received a rose-petal-vinegar-flavoured one.(当一名记者让一款热门人工智能应用点一份“特色咖啡”时,他收到了一杯玫瑰花瓣醋味的咖啡。)”可知,人工智能做出的选择可能带来意想不到的结果。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“For China’s tech giants, such as Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent, AI super-apps may offer an attractive new source of growth at a time when consumer spending in China is anaemic. Adjusted operating profit in Alibaba’s Chinese e-commerce division was down by 40% year on year in the first quarter of 2026.(对于阿里巴巴、字节跳动、腾讯等中国科技巨头而言,在中国消费支出anaemic的当下,AI超级应用或许是极具吸引力的新的增长来源。阿里巴巴中国电商部门2026年第一季度调整后营业利润同比下降40%。)”可知,阿里巴巴中国电商部门2026年第一季度调整后营业利润同比下降40%。由此可知,中国消费支出疲软。anaemic意为“疲软的、乏力的”,和weak同义。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“ByteDance tried an AI-powered device in December when it launched a smartphone with ZTE, a device-maker, which came pre-loaded with an AI assistant. But despite an initial burst of enthusiasm, with around 30,000 of the devices produced, the project was a failure, in part because Alibaba and Tencent blocked it from using their payment platforms.(12月,字节跳动曾联合设备厂商中兴推出一款内置AI助手的智能手机,尝试打造AI硬件产品。尽管初期反响热烈,该机型产量约三万台,但项目最终失败,部分原因是阿里巴巴和腾讯禁止它接入自家支付平台。)”可知,其他企业封锁了字节跳动的支付通道。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据最后一段中“As China’s internet enters its next era, a bitter fight for dominance is coming.(随着中国互联网进入下一个时代,一场争夺主导权的激烈竞争即将到来。)”
Forest bathing. Soft hiking. You do not have to be capital-O outdoorsy to know that stepping outside can feel incredibly restorative. You might water some herbs, take a quick walk or simply sit by the beach. Here are a few ways to bring more nature into your life.
Head for the trees.
Getting outside in any form can be helpful, but spending time in a park may offer additional benefits. It does not have to be a large or beautiful park. ____16____ One study found that adults who walked through a natural area experienced less rumination than people who walked along a busy urban route. Another study found that walking in nature was linked to lower anxiety and better memory.
Check on your plant babies.
When getting outdoors is difficult, indoor plants may bring a small part of nature into your home. One small study found that repotting a plant reduced activity in the sympathetic nervous system, which is involved in the body’s response to stress. ____17____ A separate review linked indoor plants with signs of physical relaxation, although many of the studies involved were small.
____18____
If you are short on outdoor time, nature may still be able to come to you digitally. Research suggests that looking at natural landscapes in photographs and videos may help the body relax and reduce feelings of stress. Even having a view through a window may offer some benefits. You could watch a nature documentary, hang a picture of your favorite beach or choose a desk overlooking a tree-lined street. ____19____ They may provide some of the calming effects of nature.
Build nature into your schedule.
Think about where nature could fit into your own schedule. Could you get off public transportation one stop early and walk through a park? Could you hold a meeting while walking around the block? Or could you spend part of your lunch break sitting beneath a tree? ____20____ You do not need a dramatic mountain view or an entire day in the forest. Sometimes a few trees, a houseplant or several quiet minutes watching birds are enough to help your mind slow down.
A. Once outdoor time becomes part of your routine, it requires less planning.
B. These experiences are not complete replacements for going outside.
C. Search for natural pictures online on your computer.
D. Add some green to your screen.
E. Natural scenery can greatly improve your mood.
F. Participants also experienced lower blood pressure.
G. A few trees and some greenery may be enough to change how you feel.
【答案】16. G 17. F 18. D 19. B 20. A
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了几种把更多自然元素融入生活、舒缓身心的方法。

I fell in love with Katrina right away. She was new to our school, but she didn’t seem shy or nervous. She smiled at everyone, even on the first day of class. Unluckily, we only got to enjoy that smile for the first three days of school. Our teacher told us that Katrina had cancer (癌症) and would be in the hospital.
Some of my friends in my class and I decided to go to see her in the hospital. She had just moved to a new town and didn’t even get a chance to make friends with anyone yet. We wanted to keep her company. That was how we came to know Katrina and how much fun she really was.
It was awkward at first because we didn’t know what to talk about, but when she started telling us about her hospital adventures, we were all laughing. And before we knew it, we had been there for almost three hours. She told us about the kid in the room next to her who would get up and pull the fire alarm for absolutely no reason. And sure enough, while we were sitting with her, the fire alarm went off. We all laughed when nobody feared and escaped. And she told us how much she missed her little animals: a rabbit, a bird, cats, dogs, etc. Later, her mom told us that her favorite thing was to go to the Humane Society and adopt (收养) the poorest animal. She always managed to take it home and make it beautiful.
After that day, we continued visiting her. We could see she was hopeful that she would eventually recover. However, during one of our visits, she learned from doctors that she only had a 50% chance to recover. She was quite scared, crying, “I don’t want to die.” And we heard her family was having economic problems and that her single mom was having little time to help take care of her animals. Suddenly, she felt her world became dark; she grew anxious and helpless.
We told her we were there to fight with her. We wouldn’t let her go.

【答案】范文
After returning to school, we wondered how to support her. Soon, we worked out ways. The next day, we started a fundraiser, which saw all students, parents, and staff were enthusiastic. That day, we ended up raising over $4,500. To further support Katrina, we took her animals home and helped take care of them. Moreover, we visited her as much as we could. And we gave her cards and gifts to cheer her up. Her room looked like a gift shop after a while. Gradually, Katrina became more hopeful and her smiles returned.
Finally, her cancer was gone and she would go home on her birthday and have a party. We were all excited to be invited to her party. On her birthday, we brought Katrina cakes, gifts, etc. And we celebrated her birthday and her success in survival by dancing, singing songs and playing games. Katrina and her mother quite thanked us for our support during their hardest time. Days later, when Katrina became strong enough, she returned to school and had fun with us again. We were already more than just classmates; we were also close friends.

Wang Hong, a 35-year-old Chinese mathematician, made history in July 2026 by winning the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Philadelphia. Known as the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics”, the Fields Medal is awarded every four years to outstanding mathematicians under the age of 40. Wang has become the first Chinese female scholar to receive this top honor in the global mathematics community.
Born in a small town in Guangxi, Wang showed exceptional academic talent in mathematics from an early age. She skipped grades twice during her primary school years due to her rapid learning ability. At the age of 16, she was admitted to Peking University. Though she initially enrolled in geophysics, she soon discovered her true passion lay in mathematics and transferred to the School of Mathematical Sciences.
Driven by curiosity and perseverance, Wang continued her academic pursuit overseas. She obtained her master’s degrees from top French institutions and earned her doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2019, under the guidance of Larry Guth, a leading expert in harmonic analysis. In 2025, she joined the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) in France, making her the first Asian tenured professor in the institute’s history.
Wang’s research mainly focuses on harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. Her most groundbreaking achievement is the full proof of the centuries-old Kakeya Conjecture, a tough problem that had puzzled mathematicians worldwide for decades. The complete research paper has provided new perspectives for combinatorial geometry and laid a solid foundation for follow-up studies in related fields.
In her award speech, Wang shared her understanding of mathematics. “Mathematics has no borders and no gender. What matters most is the courage to explore and the persistence to stick to what you love.” She hoped her story could encourage more young people, especially girls, to step into scientific research and pursue their academic dreams bravely.
4. What do we know about the Fields Medal from Paragraph 1?
A. For senior mathematicians. B. Top math-related honor.
C. It offers big prize money. D. No Asian females won it before.
5. Why did Wang Hong transfer to study mathematics in Peking University?
A. She disliked geophysics. B. She had early math talent.
C. Math attracted her more. D. She failed geophysics tests.
6. Which of the following is Wang Hong’s landmark academic achievement?
A. Solving the long-standing Kakeya Conjecture.
B. Building the theory of harmonic analysis.
C. Founding a new branch of geometry.
D. Publishing the longest math research paper in history.
7. What quality does Wang Hong stress most in her speech?
A. Courage and devotion B. Curiosity and tradition
C. Caution and observation D. Ambition and cooperation

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
