“I’m going to walk a thousand miles by the end of the year,” I announced to my mom after a sweaty Friday morning hike. It was mid-May, and I had walked 315 miles since the start of the year, with 685 miles left. My mom raised her eyebrows in doubt, which was rational because I was out of shape and suffering from severe depression.
My depression came after my 37-year-old brother Wayne died suddenly in a car accident last September. We had been extremely close, and his loss greatly affected my life, leaving me with a poor appetite, sleepless nights and no desire to go out.
A simple hiking trip with my husband Billy on our 23rd wedding anniversary completely changed my negative state of mind. Though I was totally exhausted and breathless after climbing the small mountain, I felt a long-lost sense of achievement and a warm, subtle connection to my late brother Wayne. Deeply inspired by this special experience, I began walking regularly four to five times a week in my neighborhood.
I met countless unexpected obstacles on my long journey of walking. I was once caught in a sudden heavy rain on a lonely street and got completely soaked from head to toe. Worse still, I badly sprained my ankle during a long-distance hike, which brought continuous sharp pain and stopped all my outdoor exercise for a whole week.
Witnessing my endless hardships and persistent effort, my family sincerely hoped that I could lower my difficult walking goal. “You can finish 750 or 800 miles, and it is also meaningful,” they comforted me patiently. However, I firmly refused to give up my original promise. I bought professional supportive hiking boots, recovered gradually day by day and stuck strictly to my walking plan.
In late December, I finished the last few miles with Billy in the park where I had once got injured. After months of persistent walking and constant self-improvement, I finally accomplished my tough annual goal. This long and tough journey brought me profound changes, reshaping both my physical condition and inner mindset in the process of overcoming repeated difficulties and setbacks.
4. What does the underlined word “rational” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Unbelievable. B. Reasonable. C. Confusing. D. Accidental.
5. Why did the author decide to walk regularly?
A. To heal her inner sorrow. B. To forget her late brother.
C. To build up physical strength. D. To celebrate her anniversary.
6. What kind of person was the author?
A. Outgoing. B. Generous. C. Determined. D. Cautious.
7. What does the author’s experience show?
A. Love cures physical injuries.
B. Accidents may change our life.
C. We can learn a lot from failure.
D. We can grow through hardships.

In northern Chile, the Atacama Desert offers one of the clearest night skies on Earth. When darkness falls, more and more stars appear until a whole galaxy stretches across the sky. The desert is extremely dry, high above sea level, and far from city lights, making it a key place for space study. Chiara Mazzucchelli, a Chilean astronomy leader, said, “The conditions in the Atacama Desert are unique in the world.” She also noted that the area has more than 300 clear nights each year.
The desert has attracted many important research centers. Every year, scientists from different countries come here to study the universe. Julia Bodensteiner, a visiting researcher, said, “We are lucky to be here.” The land is rocky, the air is thin, and the nights are freezing, but the desert remains an ideal place for observing space.
However, the desert’s darkness is now facing serious danger. Last year, a green energy project was planned only a short distance from an important observatory. Scientists warned that extra light, dust, small ground movements, and changes in the air could make space study impossible. As people’s resistance grew, the project was canceled in January. Still, the event showed that current rules for protecting the night sky are not strong or clear enough.
Eduardo Unda-Sanzana, an astronomy expert, recalled that twenty years ago the Atacama was an ocean of darkness. Today, city growth, industry, mining, and wind farms are changing the area step by step. He also warned, “We’ve had 70 years to learn from history and avoid repeating those same mistakes.” His words refer to an earlier research station in Chile which had to close because of pollution caused by mining and it now flashes a red signal to those who fail to protect the desert’s valuable night sky.
The good news is that this problem has made more people take action. Scientists, local communities, and government officials are now pushing for better laws and stronger protection. If they work together, the Atacama Desert can remain a bright window to the universe and a place that inspires future discovery.
8. What makes the Atacama Desert ideal for space research?
A. Its comfortable weather. B. Its advanced equipment.
C. Its attractive natural scenery. D. Its unique natural conditions.
9. Why was the green energy project canceled?
A. For the scientists’ plan. B. For the public opposition.
C. For its low economic value. D. For its dangerous surroundings.
10. What should the closure of the research station be regarded as?
A. A research failure. B. A warning sign.
C. A mining accident. D. A policy challenge.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Atacama Desert’s Dark Sky Is at Risk
B. Why the Atacama Desert Attracts Global Scientists
C. How Light Pollution Harms the Atacama Desert’s Stars
D. The Atacama Desert Faces Pressure from Human Activities
D
One of the most important effects of artificial intelligence (AI) is on how information is spread online. Instead of typing questions into search engines, people increasingly ask chatbots for direct answers, because this new way seems faster and easier.
This change promises to bring more knowledge to more people in less time, and in that sense it is a real step forward. Yet there is also a hidden problem. As AI-powered search tools remove the need for people to look for the sites with answers, they are stopping the flow of traffic to those pages, and those lost visitors often mean lost money for the people and groups that created the content.
The problem is already becoming clear. By one estimate, monthly traffic from search engines has fallen by 15% in the past year, and the loss is not limited to news websites. Science and education sites have lost many readers; reference sites are down; and health sites have seen an even sharper fall. Human traffic is the economic fuel of much of the internet, so when that fuel becomes weaker, many websites may find it harder to continue producing useful material.
A steady flow of traffic helps build online communities. A large public knowledge site has warned that AI summaries without clear sources may discourage people from contributing, while a well-known question-and-answer community for programmers has reported that fewer questions are being asked. As the old model weakens, more content is being placed behind paywalls, and many creators are turning to email, social media, audio, video, and offline events, whereas countless small sites, which are valuable but often lack money and influence, cannot protect their work so easily.
Still, the future does not have to be negative. Some people think that AI systems should pay when they read website content, while others are building tools that can trace where answers come from so that original sources can be rewarded. If a fairer system can be developed, the web may continue to grow, and both AI and content creators may benefit together.
12. What does paragraph 2 act as in the text?
A. A comment. B. An example. C. A transition. D. A quote.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The meaning of human traffic.
B. The introduction of the estimate.
C. The survival strategies of websites.
D. The harm caused by a drop in traffic.
14. Which word can best describe the situation of small sites?
A. Stable. B. Hopeful. C. Difficult. D. Unclear.
15. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To offer probable solutions. B. To make a final conclusion.
C. To provide some new topics. D. To give a further explanation.
Why You Should Not Compare Yourself to Others
Comparing yourself to others is a common habit. ____16____. When you focus on what others have or achieve, you may feel unhappy and forget your own progress. Learning to stop comparing yourself to others can lead to a healthier and happier life.
____17____
Comparing yourself to others can make you feel bad about who you are. There will always be someone who seems smarter, richer, or more successful than you. If you keep measuring yourself against them, you may feel like you are never good enough. This can slowly make you doubt your own abilities.
Comparison hides your progress
Comparison often makes you forget your own progress. You may have worked hard to improve, but when you look at others, your gains seem small. This is unfair to yourself because your journey is your own. What matters is not whether you are ahead of someone else, but whether you are moving forward. ____18____.
Comparison ignores your differences
____19____. Someone may seem to have an easy life, but you cannot see their struggles and sacrifices. Likewise, others cannot see the challenges you face every day. Comparing your inside with someone else’s outside is never fair. What looks like success may hide pain, and what looks like failure may be a brave step forward.
Comparison wastes your energy
Comparing yourself to others also wastes the energy you could use to improve your own life. When you spend time worrying about what others are doing, you have less time to focus on your own goals. This makes it harder to grow and enjoy what you already have. ____20____. When you do that, you can make real progress and feel more satisfied.
A. Comparison makes you envious.
B. Comparison steals your confidence.
C. Some people may think little of you.
D. However, it often does more harm than good.
E. Putting your energy into your own path is far more useful.
F. No two people live the same life, so comparison is meaningless.
G. When you stop comparing, you can clearly see how far you have come.

In the past, whenever my classmates talked about their fathers’ jobs, I kept quiet. Some said their fathers were doctors, teachers, or managers. Their words were full of pride, but mine were hard to say. My father worked in a desert area and planted trees year after year. In my eyes, his job was dirty, tiring, and unimportant. He was often away from home, and when he came back, his face was dark from the sun and his hands were rough and dry. I loved him, of course, but I did not want to tell my friends what he did. Deep in my heart, I even felt a little ashamed.
That feeling stayed with me until the summer holiday of my first year in high school. One day, my father told me that I could go with him to his workplace and stay there for several days. At first, I did not want to go. I thought the trip would be boring, and I could not imagine why anyone would choose to live in such a place. But my mother smiled and said, “You should go and see with your own eyes.” Her words made me think for a while. In the end, I agreed, though not very willingly.
The trip was much harder than I had expected. After a long bus ride, the buildings slowly disappeared, and the view outside the window changed. Yellow sand spread far into the distance. The wind blew strongly, and I could see small trees standing alone in the heat.
When I arrived, my clothes were already covered with dust. The place where my father and his workmates lived was simple. Their rooms were small, and the food was plain. There were no busy streets and no fun at all. That night, I lay on the bed and could not sleep well because the wind kept beating against the window.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
The next morning, my father woke me up before sunrise.

D 9. B 10. B 11. A
根据第一段中“The desert is extremely dry, high above sea level, and far from city lights, making it a key place for space study. Chiara Mazzucchelli, a Chilean astronomy leader, said, “The conditions in the Atacama Desert are unique in the world.(这片沙漠极度干燥、海拔极高且远离城市灯光,使其成为太空研究的关键场所。智利天文学领军人物基亚拉·马祖凯利表示,“阿塔卡马沙漠的条件在全世界都是独一无二的。”)”可知,是当地独特的自然条件让它成为太空研究的理想场所。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“As people’s resistance grew, the project was canceled in January.(随着民众的反对情绪不断加剧,这个项目在一月份被取消了)”可知,该绿色能源项目被取消的原因是公众的反对。
根据第四段中“His words refer to an earlier research station in Chile which had to close because of pollution caused by mining and it now flashes a red signal to those who fail to protect the desert’s valuable night sky.(他的话指向智利早年的一座研究站,这座研究站因采矿造成的污染被迫关闭,如今它向所有未能保护这片沙漠珍贵夜空的人发出了红色警示信号)”可知,这座研究站的关闭应当被视作一个警示标志。
C 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第一段中“Instead of typing questions into search engines, people increasingly ask chatbots for direct answers, because this new way seems faster and easier.(人们不再通过在搜索引擎中输入问题来获取答案,而是越来越多地直接向聊天机器人提问,因为这种方式似乎更快、更便捷。)”介绍了“人们转向 AI 聊天机器人获取信息”这一变化现象;第二段“This change promises to bring more knowledge to more people in less time, and in that sense it is a real step forward. Yet there is also a hidden problem. As AI-powered search tools remove the need for people to look for the sites with answers, they are stopping the flow of traffic to those pages, and those lost visitors often mean lost money for the people and groups that created the content.(这一变化有望在更短的时间内将更多知识传递给更多人,从这个意义上说,确实是一大进步。然而,也隐藏着一个问题:随着人工智能驱动的搜索工具让人们不再需要去查找载有答案的网站,它们也正在切断流向这些页面的流量,而那些流失的访客往往意味着内容创作者和相关组织的收入损失。)”先肯定该变化的积极意义,随即通过转折引出核心问题,后文所有段落均围绕这一问题展开论述。由此可知,第二段起到了承上启下、衔接现象与问题的过渡作用。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“The problem is already becoming clear. By one estimate, monthly traffic from search engines has fallen by 15% in the past year, and the loss is not limited to news websites. Science and education sites have lost many readers; reference sites are down; and health sites have seen an even sharper fall. Human traffic is the economic fuel of much of the internet, so when that fuel becomes weaker, many websites may find it harder to continue producing useful material.(问题已经变得越来越明显。据估计,过去一年中,来自搜索引擎的月度流量下降了15%,这种流失不仅限于新闻网站。科学与教育类网站读者锐减,参考类网站流量下滑,健康类网站的访问量更是大幅下滑。真实用户流量是互联网大部分业态的经济动力,当这种动力减弱时,许多网站可能难以持续提供有价值的内容。)”可知,第三段主要谈论了流量下降带来的负面影响与危害。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“As the old model weakens, more content is being placed behind paywalls, and many creators are turning to email, social media, audio, video, and offline events, whereas countless small sites, which are valuable but often lack money and influence, cannot protect their work so easily.(随着旧有模式逐渐削弱,越来越多的内容被置于付费墙之后,许多创作者转而依赖电子邮件、社交媒体、音频、视频以及线下活动,而无数小型网站虽有价值,却常常缺乏资金和影响力,难以轻易保护自己的作品。)”
根据最后一段“Still, the future does not have to be negative. Some people think that AI systems should pay when they read website content, while others are building tools that can trace where answers come from so that original sources can be rewarded. If a fairer system can be developed, the web may continue to grow, and both AI and content creators may benefit together.(然而,未来未必是悲观的。
D 17. B 18. G 19. F 20. E
前文“Comparing yourself to others is a common habit.( 拿自己和别人比较是一种常见的习惯。)”提出“和他人比较是很普遍的习惯”,后文“When you focus on what others have or achieve, you may feel unhappy and forget your own progress.( 当你专注于别人拥有或取得的成就时,可能会感到不快乐,并忘记自己的进步。)” D选项“However, it often does more harm than good.( 然而,它往往弊大于利。)”
下文“Comparing yourself to others can make you feel bad about who you are. There will always be someone who seems smarter, richer, or more successful than you. If you keep measuring yourself against them, you may feel like you are never good enough. This can slowly make you doubt your own abilities.( 与他人比较会让你对自己产生负面感受。总有人看起来比你聪明、富有或成功。如果你不断用他们的标准来衡量自己,可能会觉得自己永远不够好。这会逐渐让你对自己的能力产生怀疑。)”可知,本段内容围绕“和他人比较会让人自我否定、怀疑自身能力”展开,核心是损害自信心。B选项“Comparison steals your confidence(比较会偷走你的自信)”精准对应段落主旨,与后文 “doubt your own abilities”形成呼应。
本段主题是“Comparison hides your progress比较会掩盖你自己的进步”,前文“What matters is not whether you are ahead of someone else, but whether you are moving forward.( 重要的是你是否在前进,而不是是否比别人快。)” G选项“When you stop comparing, you can clearly see how far you have come.( 当你停止比较,就能清晰看到自己已经走了多远。)”
本段主题是“Comparison ignores your differences比较会忽略人与人之间的差异”,后文“Someone may seem to have an easy life, but you cannot see their struggles and sacrifices. Likewise, others cannot see the challenges you face every day.( 有些人看似生活轻松,但你无法看到他们所经历的挣扎与牺牲。同样,别人也无法体会你每天所面对的挑战。)”具体解释:你看不到他人背后的挣扎,他人也看不到你的难处,拿内在和外在对比并不公平。
F选项“No two people live the same life, so comparison is meaningless.( 没有两个人的人生完全相同,因此比较毫无意义。)”
前文“When you spend time worrying about what others are doing, you have less time to focus on your own goals.( 当你花时间担忧他人的事时,就少了专注实现自己目标的时间。)”说明“关注他人会减少专注自身目标的时间”,后文“When you do that, you can make real progress and feel more satisfied.( 当你这样做时,反而能取得真正的进步,并获得更多的满足感。)” E选项“Putting your energy into your own path is far more useful.( 把精力投入自己的人生道路会有用得多。)”

Li Hua
Dear Jack,
I’m glad to hear you’re interested in Tang poetry! Tang poetry, flourishing in the Tang Dynasty (7th–10th centuries), is the representative achievement of the golden age of Chinese literature. Poets like Li Bai, Du Fu, and Wang Wei expressed deep feelings about nature, friendship, and life in only a few lines.
To enjoy it, first read the Chinese original and a good English translation side by side. Then learn about the poet’s life and background, which helps you understand the poem’s meaning. Finally, read poems aloud, because their rhythm is beautiful.
I hope that my suggestions can help you!
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, my father woke me up before sunrise. I followed my father and his workmates into the desert, carrying tools, young trees, and water. After a short walk, I was already out of breath. The soft sand made every step heavy, filling my shoes, while sweat ran down my back. My father carefully demonstrated how to dig a hole, place a tree, cover its roots, and water it gradually. I tried to do the same, but after planting just a few trees, my arms were sore and my legs shook. Meanwhile, my father kept working tirelessly without any complaint.
During the lunch break, we had a chat under a tree. My father explained that years ago, this area was covered only with shifting sand. Without trees, many people would have lost their homes. He added that numerous young trees died from extreme heat and lack of water, requiring them to plant repeatedly. At that moment, I finally understood why he had stayed there for so many years. He was not simply planting trees; he was protecting the land and helping others live better lives. I learned that true greatness does not come from a famous job title, but from doing something truly useful for others.
