5.6 The power of plants - Presenting ideas & Reflection 【Teaching Objectives (aligned with core competencies)】 1. Language competence: Students can present a poster about plants in English, use the unit expressions (give..., use...for..., mean a lot to..., more than a plant for...), and talk about why plants are important. 2. Cultural awareness: Students value plants as natural and cultural treasures, and decide to protect and plant more plants in real life. 3. Thinking quality: Students organise information into a poster outline, evaluate other groups' posters fairly, and reflect on their own learning. 4. Learning capacity: Students learn to plan in groups, prepare and deliver a short presentation, vote and give feedback, and self-assess with the reflection checklist. 【Key and Difficult Points】 Key Points: ① Make and present a poster about plants with a clear title, reasons plants are important, uses of plants, and photos. ② Use the unit expressions: "Animals need them for food", "We make...from...", "We use...for...", "It means a lot to...". ③ Reflect on and self-assess what they have learned in the unit. Difficult Points: ① Organising poster content clearly and speaking confidently in front of the class. ② Giving fair, specific feedback and votes to other groups. ③ Honestly reflecting on one's own progress and what still needs improvement. Trial Lecture Verbatim Script: Welcome Remarks Hello, my superstars! For four lessons we have been exploring the power of plants: we read the secret inside a leaf, learned the simple future tense, discovered the importance of corn, and wrote about tea and our families. Today is the exciting day we have been waiting for — we will present our posters about plants! Then we will look back and see how much we have grown. Are you ready to shine? I can already see your colourful posters on the desks, and I know every group has worked so hard. Today, remember: speaking English in front of the class is not a test, it is a gift you share. So smile, speak proudly, and let us celebrate the wonderful world of plants together. Let us go! Ⅰ. Lead-in: task review Let us quickly review what a great poster needs. On the board is our outline: a bright title, like "Powerful Plants" or "The Magic of Plants"; why plants are important in nature; how we make use of plants, with photos; and what plants mean to different cultures. Remember the tip: make sure others can read your poster, and use bright colours! Now, which groups are ready to present? I see hands everywhere — wonderful! Before we start, let us warm up with a quick chant about plants. Clap with me: Plants give us food, plants give us air, plants make the world so green and fair! Again! Great energy. Now, look at your own group poster. What plant did you choose? Why? Take ten seconds to remember your reasons. Ready? Good. We want every group to shine today. Ⅱ. Preparation Before we present, let us take two minutes. Each group chooses one presenter, and the others stand beside the poster. Practise your first sentence together. Use these starters: "Welcome to our poster. Our plant is... It is important because... We use it for..." Go, two minutes! (The teacher listens to each group.) Teacher: "Group One, I loved your opening line. Group Two, speak a little louder, please. Everyone is doing a great job." Teacher: "Group Three, remember to point at your photos when you talk. Group Four, your title is beautiful and bright — well done. Now, take a deep breath, smile, and remember: we are all friends here, so just share your work proudly. A good presenter looks at the audience, speaks slowly, and points to the poster. You are all ready." Students: "We are ready!" Teacher: "I love that energy. Let us begin! I will be taking notes on your wonderful presentations, and we will celebrate every group's hard work at the end." Ⅲ. Presentation and voting Now, the moment! Group One, please come to the front with your poster. The rest of us, listen carefully and be ready to vote after. Go ahead!" Group One: "Welcome to our poster about bamboo. Bamboo is important because pandas eat it, and it grows very fast. We use bamboo for chopsticks, baskets and even buildings. Bamboo means a lot to Chinese culture. Thank you!" Teacher: "Wow! A super clear presentation. You used We use...for... and mean a lot to... perfectly. I loved that you pointed at the panda photo. Group Two, your turn!" Group Two: "Our poster is about tea plants. Tea is good for our health, and it is a key part of Chinese culture. We make tea from tea leaves. Without tea, our mornings would be very different. Thank you!" Teacher: "Excellent! You used Without tea,... beautifully. And your black-tea cup drawing is lovely. Group Three, you are next!" Group Three: "Our poster is about corn. Corn gives us food like tacos and popcorn. We even make toys from corn. Corn means a lot to Mexican culture. Thank you!" Teacher: "Fantastic! You took us all the way to Mexico. Group Four, our last presenters, come on up!" Group Four: "Our poster is about trees. Trees give us wood, shade and oxygen. We use wood for desks, houses and paper. Without trees, the natural world would be very different. Thank you!" Teacher: "What a powerful ending to our presentations! You are all confident little speakers. Now, let us vote. Raise your hands for the best three posters. ... And the winners are... Group One, Group Two and Group Three! Big applause to all our presenters — you were all amazing!" Ⅳ. Reflection Now let us slow down and reflect on our whole unit. Look at the reflection mind map: "Importance of plants". Plants are important in the natural world. Plants are useful to people. Plants mean a lot to different cultures. Let us self-assess. On a scale of 1 to 3, one is excellent, two is good, three is not yet: can you now describe plants with unit words? Can you use the simple future tense? Can you describe why plants are important? Who wants to share your honest thought? Yes, please!" Students: "I think I am a two or three. I can describe plants, but I still mix up will and be going to sometimes." Teacher: "That is such an honest and brave answer! Knowing what you need to improve is the first step. We will do a quick review next lesson. Who else?" Students: "I am a one for describing plants! I love this unit, and I will water the plants at home from now on." Teacher: "What a wonderful promise to plants! I am so proud of your growth. Now, finish the sentence on your reflection sheet: I still need to improve... Take one minute. (Students write.) Time. Who wants to read their sentence? Yes, please!" Students: "I still need to improve my pronunciation of /eɪ/ and /ɔɪ/." Teacher: "Great self-awareness! We will practise those sounds again. And what is one thing you will remember about this unit forever? Yes, you!" Students: "I will remember that a plant is like a factory making sugar and oxygen. It is amazing!" Teacher: "That is exactly the spirit of this unit. You learned science, language and love for nature all at once. Let us finish our reflection together: plants are important in the natural world, they are useful to people, and they mean a lot to different cultures. When you close your books today, remember one promise: we will try our best to protect plants, because without them our world would be very different." Students: "We will protect plants!" Teacher: "I love to hear that. You have grown so much this unit, and I am proud of every one of you." Closing Remarks What an amazing final lesson! We presented our colourful posters about bamboo, tea and corn, voted for the best ones, and honestly reflected on our learning. You now know plants give us food, oxygen, medicine and culture, and you can use the simple future to talk about a greener future. I saw so much confidence today — you spoke like little teachers, listened like kind friends, and thought like little scientists. Homework: first, write three sentences about what you will do to protect plants. Second, take your poster home and show it proudly to your parents. Third, finish your reflection sheet. Thank you for a wonderful unit, everyone! You are the future protectors of our green world. See you in Unit 6, where we will meet our amazing animal friends! 【Blackboard Design】 Unit 5 Presenting: Poster about plants Outline: Title / Why important in nature / How we use plants / What they mean to cultures Useful: Animals need them for food. We make...from... We use...for... It means a lot to... Vote: best 3 posters & best 3 presentations. Reflection: importance of plants — nature, people, culture; self-assess 1/2/3. 【Defense Questions】 Q1: What is the purpose of the Presenting ideas lesson? Answer: It is the output stage of the whole unit. Students organise all they have learned into a poster, present in English, and reflect on their progress, turning passive knowledge into active communication. Q2: How do you prepare students for presenting? Answer: I give a clear poster outline and useful sentence starters, then a short group rehearsal where I walk around and give quick feedback on volume and content. Q3: How do you run the voting fairly? Answer: I ask students to listen actively during each presentation and vote for the best three using clear criteria: clear content, good English and a bright poster. This trains fair evaluation, not just popularity. Q4: Why is self-reflection important? Answer: Reflection helps students notice their own growth and the gaps they still have, such as mixing up will and be going to. It makes them active learners rather than passive listeners. Q5: How do you end the unit on an emotional high? Answer: I connect the unit theme to real action, asking students to water plants at home and protect nature, so the learning goes beyond the classroom into caring for the natural world. 【Post-class reflection】 ① The poster presentations were confident and full of unit language; the whole class listened and voted respectfully. ② A few presenters spoke too fast and too softly; I will add a "speak to the back row" reminder next time. ③ The reflection was honest, and several students noticed their grammar gaps; I will start Unit 6 with a five-minute simple-future review. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
