4.6 Time to celebrate - Presenting ideas & Reflection

【Teaching Objectives (aligned with core competencies)】

1. Language competence Students can present a festival or holiday poster in English using the outline: name, time, place, reasons to celebrate, and activities, with expressions like "It takes place on...", "It is a celebration for...", "The best part of the festival is...".

2. Cultural awareness Students introduce a Chinese or foreign festival with respect, compare ways of celebrating (tradition, green ways, duty), and feel proud of and curious about world festival cultures.

3. Thinking quality Students select festival information, organise it into a clear poster outline, and evaluate peers' presentations politely.

4. Learning capacity Students learn to research information in groups, organise ideas with an outline, practise before presenting, and reflect on their learning with a self-assessment checklist.

Welcome Remarks

Hello, my wonderful students! Welcome to the last lesson of Unit 4. We have learned about the Spring Festival, a green Christmas, and people on duty like Dr Leng. Today is our big day: you will present your festival posters! Get ready to show the class a festival you love. Let us celebrate English together!

Ⅰ. Lead-in

First, let us review. What have we learned in this unit? Yes, you, please!

Students: "We learned festival words, adverbs of frequency, and stories about celebrating in different ways."

Teacher: "Excellent! Some follow traditions, some celebrate in new green ways, and some celebrate by working on duty. Today you will present a poster about one festival. Let us remember the steps. Step one: choose a festival. Step two: collect information. Step three: organise with the outline. Step four: present and vote. Are you ready? Great! I can already see your colourful posters in my mind."

Ⅱ. Preparation

Work in groups of four. Step one: choose a festival or holiday — from China or another country — and vote. Step two: collect information: name, time, place, reasons to celebrate, activities. Step three: organise with the outline. Useful language: "It takes place on...", "It is a festival in...", "...is a celebration for...", "My family always have... at...", page number 0

"The best part of the festival is...". Remember: make the title big and colourful! You have six minutes to prepare. Go!

(The teacher walks around helping groups.)

Teacher: "Group One, which festival did you choose? Good choice! Don't forget the reasons to celebrate. Group Three, your poster about the Water-splashing Festival looks colourful — remember to say why people splash water. Group Two, add one activity you actually do, not just facts. Group Five, make your title big enough to read from the back row!"

Teacher: "Two minutes left! Practise saying your poster out loud together. Remember: look at your friends, speak slowly, and smile. A confident speaker makes a great poster."

Ⅲ. Presentation

Time to present! Welcome Group One first!

Group One: "Hello everyone. Our poster is about the Spring Festival. It takes place in January or February. It is a festival in China. It is a celebration for family reunions. My family always have dumplings and fish at the Spring Festival. The best part is getting red envelopes. We love it!"

Teacher: "Brilliant poster! You used all four outline parts and your title is big and colourful. Class, what do you think? Yes, you!"

Students: "I like the red envelope part. It made me smile."

Teacher: "Thank you for the comment. Group Three, please!"

Group Three: "Our poster is about the Water-splashing Festival. It takes place in April. It is a festival of the Dai people in Yunnan. It is a celebration for the New Year. People splash water to wash away bad luck. The best part is playing in the water with friends."

Teacher: "Excellent! You taught us about an ethnic festival beautifully. Group Five, please!"

Group Five: "Our poster is about Christmas. It takes place on December 25th. It is a festival in Western countries. It is a celebration for family and giving gifts. People put up trees and have a big dinner. But we also learned that we should have a green Christmas!"

Teacher: "Wonderful! You even connected to our green Christmas lesson. Great thinking! Group Two, please!"

Group Two: "Our poster is about the Mid-Autumn Festival. It takes place in September or October. It is a festival in China and some other Asian countries. It is a celebration for family reunion and the full moon. My family always have mooncakes and watch the moon together. The best part is sitting in the yard with my grandparents."

Teacher: "Beautiful! The full moon and mooncakes — you described the feelings, not just facts. That is what makes a poster come alive. Group Four, please!"

Group Four: "Our poster is about the Dragon Boat Festival. It takes place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is a festival in China. It is a celebration for Qu Yuan, a great poet. People hold dragon boat races and eat zongzi. The best part is watching the races by the river."

Teacher: "Excellent cultural introduction! You explained why people celebrate, which is exactly what a good poster needs. Group Six, please!"page number 1
