My family was hosting an exchange student from the UK named Tom. To show him the charm (魅力) of Chinese culture, my mother decided we would make dumplings together on a rainy Sunday afternoon. I had told Tom many times that I was a “pro” at making dumplings, showing off hundreds of perfect ones I had made with my mother. Tom was curious and excited, his eyes shining as he watched my mother prepare the fresh dough (面团) and filling.
We gathered around the kitchen table, which was covered with a thin layer of white flour (面粉). I picked up a piece of dough, rolled it into a circle, and started to explain the “art” of folding. “Watch carefully, Tom,” I said confidently. “The key is to create perfect pleats (褶皱) so the filling stays inside.” Tom followed my every move, his large hands struggling to handle the tiny, slippery piece of dough. He looked at me with great respect, waiting for my masterpiece to appear.
However, things didn’t go as smoothly as I had imagined. Perhaps I was too nervous or had been away from my mother’s kitchen for too long. When I tried to close my first dumpling, the skin suddenly tore, and the filling flowed out. My “perfect” dumpling looked more like a flattened pancake. I tried again, but the more I rushed, the worse it became. My face turned red as I felt my “expert” identity slipping away. Tom stared at my messy hands, his earlier excitement replaced by a confused silence.
Just then, my mother laughed gently and reminded me of old Chinese sayings: “Practice makes perfect, and mistakes are the best teachers”. She then turned to Tom and said, “In China, it’s not about how the dumpling looks, but the love we put into making it together.” This taught me that I had been so focused on boasting that I had forgotten to actually enjoy the moment with my friend.
4. How did the author feel about making dumplings at first?
A. It was simple. B. It was impressive.
C. It was graceful. D. It was challenging.
5. What was the author trying to do in Paragraph 2?
A. Show his cooking skill. B. Teach Tom to make dumplings.
C. Prepare the dumpling dough. D. Wait for Tom’s dumpling masterpiece.
6. What do we know about the author in Paragraph 3?
A. He felt embarrassed about his work. B. He showed his “pro” to Tom skillfully.
C. Tom was satisfied with his masterpiece. D. Making dumplings went smoothly as he expected.
7. What did the author think important about the experience of making dumplings?
A. A perfect shape. B. The delicious filling.
C. The shared moment. D. A lesson from failure.

Language is not just a tool for communication; it’s also a playground for the mind. English, in particular, is noted for its rich vocabulary and influence from many different languages, which provides a great basis for creativity and humor. One example of this is the use of puns (双关语) the clever or humorous use of a word that has more than one meaning, or of words that have different meanings but sound the same.
Puns can be categorized (分类) into different types, Homophonic puns rely on word pairs that sound alike but have different meanings, like “A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it’s two-tired.” Homographic puns use words that are spelled the same but have different meanings and sometimes different pronunciations, for example, “I can’t bear the weight of that bear.”
Compound puns often combine homophonic and homographic elements, creating even more complex wordplay, for example, “I was struggling to figure out how lightning works, but then it struck me.”
The history of puns in English literature and culture is rich and interesting. Following their development shows how language, culture, and humor have changed over time. Puns have been a part of English literature from the early days, appearing in medieval (中世纪的) texts and Shakespeare’s plays, often used for humor or to show double meanings. During the Victorian Era, strict social norms promoted the use of puns, as they allowed people to comment on issues subtly (巧妙地) while avoiding directness. Today, puns are widely used in advertising, television, and social media, reflecting how English wordplay adapts to different contexts and media.
People’s opinions of puns have changed throughout history. Once seen as a sign of cleverness, puns were sometimes criticized (批评) as low-level humor. However, in recent years, they’ve regained popularity, largely because of the Internet and social media, which allow for quick sharing and creativity in pun-based humor.
12. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A. The development of language over time.
B. The difficulty of learning a new language.
C. The creative and playful aspect of language.
D. The different functions of language in daily life.
13. Which of the following contains a homographic pun?
A. You can call a bee from America a USB.
B. Six is afraid of seven because seven ate nine.
C. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.
D. I only know 25 letters of the alphabet; I don’t know Y.
14. What was the major purpose of using puns in the Victorian Era?
A. To break social rules.
B. To express ideas indirectly.
C. To spread different opinions.
D. To make communication easier.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The rise and fall of the popularity of puns.
B. The new changes of language in recent years.
C. The relationship between language and society.
D. The influence of social media on modern humor.

Alice was a senior high school student who lived at home with her parents rather than living in the school dorm. Every day, her mom Coco would nag (唠叨) her a lot, and this had lasted for years.
In the morning, before Alice went to school, Coco would stand by the door and say, “Alice, don’t use your phone when the teacher is talking.” When Alice came back home after school, Coco would keep asking, “Did you make any new friends at school? Getting along well with your classmates is really important.” Sometimes, she would also say, “Tell me something interesting that happened at school today.”
At first, Alice tried to listen patiently. But as time went by, she got more and more tired of Coco’s nagging. She often thought, “Mom talks too much. I wish I could go to a university in another city. That way, she won’t nag me all the time.”
Two years later, Alice’s dream came true. She was admitted to a university far away from home. However, one month before she left, Coco started nagging again, this time about her college life.“Remember to wash your clothes regularly in college. Study hard but also take care of your health,” Coco would repeat every day. Alice felt even more annoyed. When the day came for her to leave home, she was very happy, thinking she would finally be free from her mom’s nagging.
But things didn’t go as Alice expected at college. One roommate liked to stay up late watching movies, and the other often left her things everywhere. Alice didn’t know how to get along with them. Besides, she had no idea how to manage her spare time meaningfully. She didn’t have many friends there. Her heart was brimming with a feeling of being alone.

Zhou Chengyu was in charge of the rocket connector system--described as a vital role. Social media users have been celebrating her brilliance and referring to her as pride of the country. Her story in particular has drawn the public’s attention given her young age.
Being the youngest of the team, Zhou Chengyu was born in 1996 in the province of Guizhou. She is certainly not “old” enough compared with her colleagues, but she is known at work as "Big Sister” as a sign of respect. Once in a 3-km running contest, she actually beat half of her male counterparts. Although work shifts are not uncommon at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site, each shift requires huge courage because of the different background knowledge. However, for Zhou Chengyu, she experienced multiple (多种的) positions in 5 launching tests and now she is the youngest commander at the site.
Despite carefulness and high responsibility at work, she is just like her peers in normal life. Eating snacks and shopping are her favorite free-time activities. Her high school teacher remembers her as tough and determined. “She always had a dream of becoming scientist,” said her physics teacher.
According to her colleague, Zhou Chengyu was very surprised when she found out she went viral online. She said that she was happy when she saw people online regarding her as the pride of the country, and yet she kept saying that she was “nobody but normal worker at a launch site” and there are a lot more people just like her going unnoticed while doing the hardest job to guarantee a better future for the Chinese space program.

C. The relationship between language and society.
D. The influence of social media on modern humor.

【答案】范文:
I’m writing to share how I beat my fear of speaking English and improved my oral skills.
Here are my practical methods. I started with imitating textbook audios and reading aloud, focusing on pronunciation, intonation and stress to build my language sense. Also, I seized every chance to speak, including answering in class and attending the English corner. I never feared mistakes, for they meant progress.
For those stuck in oral English, just remember: every small practice gets you closer to fluency.

【答案】范文:
One evening, Alice found herself missing the very words she used to hate. She picked up her phone to call Coco. As soon as Coco answered, she said softly, “Mom, I miss your nagging. My roommates are difficult to get along with, and I don’t know how to manage my time.” Coco listened patiently and gave gentle advice: “Try talking to your roommates nicely about your sleep schedule, and also, join a club to make friends.” She also reminded Alice to eat healthy and get enough sleep. Alice nodded repeatedly, tears welling up in her eyes. For the first time, she felt the warmth of her mom’s words.
Alice felt much better after talking to her mom on the phone. She followed Coco’s suggestions. She had a calm chat with her roommates, and they agreed to respect each other’s habits to create a more harmonious atmosphere. She also joined a book club, where she met some like-minded classmates. Gradually, she no longer felt like a stranger in the new city. From then on, whenever she faced troubles, she’d call her mom, no longer feeling annoyed by the nagging. Instead, she knew it was the most precious gift her mom could give — a love that followed her, even from far away.
