第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Four Works of Art Across Time
These four artworks, created in different times, show how artists express people, light, and history in unique ways.
Girl with the Red Hat By Johannes Vermeer
Girl with the Red Hat is one of Johannes Vermeer’s smallest works, and it is painted on a wooden panel instead of the canvas he usually used. The girl turns in her chair and looks straight at the viewer, which creates a strong sense of connection. The artist’s skillful use of color is this painting’s most striking characteristic, for both its compositional and its psychological effects.
Georgia O’Keeffe — Hands and Thimble By Alfred Stieglitz
This photograph focuses on hands instead of a face. Stieglitz believed that a part of the body could still show a person’s true self. The hands move gently over dark cloth, holding a needle, while one finger wears a thimble (顶针). Stieglitz’s innovative approach to composing, cropping, and printing photographs made him an influential figure in 20th-century art.
Woman with a Parasol-Madame Monet and Her Son By Claude Monet
The artist’s wife Camille stands on a hill with their son Jean behind her. Monet worked quickly to record this moment. The sky is painted with loose and quick strokes, while the grass is thicker and more detailed. Small touches of yellow suggest flowers in the field. Light falls on the woman’s dress, especially the white parts, making them shine. Completed in a single outdoor session, this is a celebration of color and light.
The Mill By Rembrandt van Rijn
In the 19th century, viewers considered Rembrandt’s painting of The Mill to be one of the master’s greatest creations. They celebrated the dramatic outline of the post-mill against a dark, stormy sky, unaware that the romantic aura and rich golden tone of the scene were caused by darkened and discolored varnish (清漆). They owed the heavy atmosphere to Rembrandt’s frame of mind in the period of the mid-1650s, when he encountered severe financial difficulties.
21.What is special about Girl with the Red Hat?
A.It is painted on a board. B.It was completed outdoors.
C.It only uses dark colors. D.It shows more than one figure.
22.What can be known about Woman with a Parasol?
A.It features detailed faces. B.It catches a short-lived scene.
C.It avoids natural elements. D.It is created in an indoor studio.
23.What do the four works mentioned in the text have in common?
A. They all show people in outdoor settings.
B. They all show the artists’ concern with visual effects.
C. They were all misunderstood when first created.
D. They were all made during periods of financial difficulty.
B
My father kept lists. He listed the 539 books he read in his last 25 years and the 322 episodes of C-Span’s Booknotes he watched. He also wrote down daily shopping lists and simple task lists. He recorded everything in pocket-sized notebooks kept right beside his reading chair. He never stopped, not until December 31, 2004, when cancer finally took him away.
Born in 1927 to a working-class family in Lowell, Massachusetts, Dad left his hometown several times — first for college in Boston at 16, then to work as an engineer in Maryland in 1951, and later at MIT. It might have seemed that he had left Lowell far behind, but deep down, he always saw himself as a working-class kid from Lowell.
At 75, he returned to Lowell, the land of his forefathers. Even with large-screen TVs, CD players and personal computers all around, he loved entertaining us with his childhood stories: penny candy, milk delivered in glass bottles, and running barefoot in summer. These stories connected him to a distant past, a link in the long chain of his family’s history. As he sensed his life drawing to an end, he picked up his notebook once again and started a final list: the Last List.
I didn’t discover this list until the 20th anniversary of his death, when I opened a small, purple notebook. What I found took my breath away. In black ink, Dad had recorded 1930s Lowell by listing 68 items of lost sights, facilities and ways of life: doctors making house calls, old two-piece telephones, two years of college Latin... 68 items in all. All of them were gone from daily life, never to return, preserved only in memory.
Gone, and only in memory — that was exactly how I felt about Dad. Leafing through his list, I stepped into his inner world for the first time. The 68 items were more than dispassionate observations of 1930s Lowell; they were overflowing with warmth, affection and longing that crossed time and distance. Tears flowed.
24. What can we learn about the author’s father?
A. He was addicted to shopping. B. He was ashamed of his origin.
C. He was dedicated to his research. D. He was attached to his hometown.
25. Which of the following belonged to the old way of life in Lowell?
A. Notebooks. B. CD players. C. Penny candy. D. Mobile phones.
26. Which of the following best describes Dad?
A. Quite imaginative. B. Spiritually rich.
C. Highly optimistic. D. Totally unrealistic.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Dad’s Lists. B. A Trip to Lowell.
C. The Last Wish. D. Reading, a Lifelong Hobby.
C
It may be surprising that climate change can affect cows’ diets, which in turn affect cheese’s nutritional value and sensory qualities — including its taste, color, and mouthfeel. This is at least true for Cantal, a hard cheese from central France, researchers report in the Journal of Dairy (乳制品) Science.
Cows in this region traditionally feed on local grass. But as climate change causes more severe droughts, some dairy producers are shifting to alternative feeds like corn for their cows. “Farmers seek feeds that yield more or are more drought-tolerant than grass, but they also want to know how these dietary changes affect their products,” explains animal scientist Matthieu Bouchon.
For almost five months, Bouchon and colleagues at France’s National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment tested 40 dairy cows of two breeds(品种) by creating a dry condition and supplementing grass with corn in varying amounts. The researchers regularly sampled the cows’ milk and analyzed its fatty acids, proteins, and beneficial microbes — key components that shape the production, quality and nutrition of cheese.
The team found that a corn-based diet did not reduce milk yield and even led to an estimated reduction in methane, a major greenhouse gas emitted by cows. However, cheese from grass-fed cows was richer and more flavorful than that from cows mostly or entirely fed on corn. Grass-based diets also resulted in cheese with more heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and higher levels of beneficial lactic (乳的) acid bacteria. To preserve quality, the researchers suggest farmers should include fresh grass in cows’ corn-based feed.
French producers will possibly need different strategies to fit their environment and cow breeds. But Bouchon is certain of one thing: “If climate change continues on its current path, we will feel it in our cheese.”
28. What is the root cause of choosing alternative feeds?
A. Climate change. B. The shortage of grass.
C. Producers’ concern. D. Farmers’ request.
29. Which aspect of the research does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Its influence. B. Its findings. C. Its significance. D. Its design.
30. Which may be reduced with the corn-based diet?
A. The flavor of cheese. B. The yield of milk.
C. The emission of methane. D. The content of omega-3.
31. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To provide tailored strategies for farmers.
B. To stress French dairy producers’ worries.
C. To explain how climate change may affect cheese quality through cows’ diets.
D. To compare cheese from grass-fed and corn-fed cows.
D
Humans have evolved to spend long periods doing physical exercise. But why doesn’t everyone enjoy exercising? The complexity of the human brain is to blame.
Evolving an ability doesn’t automatically mean we’ll want to use it. While physical exercise isn’t that bad, it’s still typically unpleasant. It has to be: you’re pushing your body to its physical limits, which leads to significant discomfort.
Another issue is that the human brain is highly sensitive to wasted effort. Studies have shown that it calculates the effort required for actions and tends to stop us from squandering vital resources on fruitless efforts, like walking over 30 km for a handful of berries.
The thing is, regular exercise to get “in shape” requires constant and considerable effort — all for gradual progress and uncertain rewards. So, your brain’s tendency to ask, “Is it worth it? ” will be hard to quieten. This particular feature also means we typically prefer things which offer minimum effort for maximum reward.
Thankfully, the human brain is a complex organ. It isn’t ruled by its more primitive drives. While many species’ thought processes are limited to “Food, eat it!”, “Danger, run!”, “Pain, avoid!”, we’ve evolved beyond that. Our brains can form multiple long-term goals and ambitions. We can imagine a desirable future situation, figure out how we’d achieve it, and do just that. Or at least work toward it. This directly impacts how our brain processes motivation and willpower. It makes us capable of delayed satisfaction: we can recognize that rejecting a reward now can lead to a greater reward later, and act accordingly.
So how does the brain process motivation? The self-discrepancy (自我差异) theory suggests we have several “selves” active in our minds at any given time: our “actual” self, our “ideal” self, and our “ought” self. Your “actual” self is how you are right now. Your “ideal” self is what you want to be. And your “ought” self is the self that does what you ought to be doing to become your “ideal” self. So, if your “ideal” self is a professional footballer, and your “actual” self isn’t, your “ought” self is the one that spends a lot of time training, exercising, and getting better at football.
As far as your brain is concerned, there are processes that discourage exercise, and processes that encourage it. Ideally, you’ll end up putting more weight on the latter than the former.
32. What can be learnt from the first two paragraphs?
A. Some people are born physically weaker than others.
B. Some people dislike pushing themselves too hard physically.
C. Most people have the habit of doing physical exercise.
D. Most people do physical exercise for comfort and pleasure.
33. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “squandering” in Paragraph 3?
A. Conserving. B. Mixing. C. Misusing. D. Sharing.
34. According to the author, how are humans different from many other species?
A. Humans can imagine a desirable future and work toward it.
B. Humans benefit more from painful experiences.
C. Humans care more about immediate rewards.
D. Humans are skilled at avoiding dangers.
35. According to the self-discrepancy theory, who presents the most active “ought” self ?
A. A footballer dreaming of becoming a movie star.
B. A student eating potato chips while watching TV.
C. A professional dancer performing at a theatre.
D. A swimmer training to win an Olympic medal.

Travelling is such a wonderful opportunity and being able to travel on a budget makes it easier for people. Also, you spend less on one adventure and save for another. 36
In this post, I’ll share all my top tips for travelling on a budget.
Choose your destination carefully
37 My first tip for travelling on a budget is to research places that are good for travelling on a budget. Maybe it’s somewhere that’s cheap and easy to get to, somewhere where the currency gets you good value because of the exchange rate, or somewhere that has a lower cost of living than home!
Avoid tourist traps
Big cities and tourist hotspots are often a lot more expensive than places off the beaten track! Try and choose less well-known destinations, if you can. Even within your destination, avoid restaurants on the main street and try a small restaurant on a side street. 38
Pack well
Firstly, pack light. 39 It’ll only cost you more in baggage to bring more than you need. However, one of the most important tips for travelling on a budget is that it’s important to check that you take everything you need, not forgetting anything! If you forget something, it could cost a lot of money to buy that essential missing item when you’re abroad.
40
Sure, you might not be able to guarantee the weather, but your chosen destination will be a lot less busy and crowded during that period. Not only will you save a lot of money, but you’ll have it all to yourself !
A.Travel off-season.
B.Consider the weather.
C.Read others’ backpacking experiences.
D.You won’t wear half the clothes you want to take.
E.Budget travel doesn’t have to be any less fun either.
F.The food will probably be better as well as cheaper.
G.Some places are naturally more expensive than where you call home.

Leo had always been an active teenager who loved outdoor adventures. On a sunny Saturday morning in October, the weather was perfect for a hike, so he decided to explore Oak Hill Forest Park, a famous national park near his hometown.
Before Leo walked out of the door, his father stopped him and gave him a serious warning: “Leo, remember to stay on the marked tourist paths. The forest is extremely huge and it is easy to get lost if you go deep.”
Leo nodded quickly, giving his father a reassuring (使人放心的) smile, but in his heart, he did not take the advice seriously at all. He believed he was experienced and strong enough to solve any unexpected situation.
The autumn scenery in the park was breathtaking. As Leo hiked along the main path, he felt a sense of boredom. He wanted a real adventure. Suddenly, he noticed a narrow, overgrown dirt path leading away from the main path into the deeper woods. “This must be a secret shortcut to the top of the mountain,” he thought excitedly. Forgetting his father’s words, he stepped onto the quiet, wild path, eager to explore the unknown.
Two hours passed quickly as he walked deeper and deeper. Gradually, the tall pine trees grew much thicker, completely blocking out the warm autumn sunlight. The temperature began to drop rapidly. It was then that Leo realized he could no longer find the path he had been following. He looked around, but every direction seemed exactly the same. Alarm started to wash over him. He quickly pulled out his smartphone, but to make things worse, the screen flashed and went black — the battery was dead.
With no one in sight, despair flooded over Leo. He sat down under a tree, shaking with both cold and fear, deeply regretting his decision. Just as he was about to lose hope, a friendly voice called out, “Is anyone there?” It was a forest ranger (护林员).
