II.Grammar and Vocabulary
Section A(10分)
Directions:After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and
grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the properform
of the given word;for the other blanks, use one word that bestfits each blank.
A Toy Car
I was about seven when my grandfather gave me a small toy car for my birthday.By any
ordinary standard,it was nothing remarkable-neither expensive nor rare, and certainly not the
sort of gift anyone would expect a child (21)(keep)for years.Yet I adored it.(22)I
went around the house, thet was rarely far behind.I took it with me on visits to relatives and,
more than once, placed it beside my bed before going to sleep.
As I grew older,(23)I spent my time began to change, and the little car eventually
found its way into a box filled with toys I had outgrown. The box was put away, and so,in a sense,

was the part of my childhood it contained.Years passed(24)my giving the car a single
thought.
It was not until I was in my twenties that I saw it again. My grandfather had died a few
months earlier, and one aftemoon I was helping my parents sort through things that had
accumulated around the house.(25)(open)an old box,I noticed something lying beneath a
pile of foigotten toys.It was the car.
(26)sieht of it caught me completely by surprise.Holding it in my hand,I was
suddenly aken back to the birthday(27)my grandfather had given it to me.Details I had
not thought about for years came rushing back:his face,my excitement, and the simple pleasure
of receiving something from someone I loved.
Strangely, the car I was holding was both the same object and something entirely different.
Once, its value had come from the hours of enjoyment it gave me.Now it mattered for another
reason altogether. It had become a physical connection to my grandfather and to a period of my
life that could never(28)(recover).
I cleaned the car carefully and placed it on a shelf in my room, where it(29)(remain)
today. To someone seeing it for the first time,it would probably look like an ordinary old toy.For
me,though, its real value lies not in what it is,but in the memories(30)(protect)from the
gradual fading of time.

The New Taste of Snacks:Texture
Take a closer look at supermarket shelves and you may notice a change in the way snacks are
being designed.Chocolate bars now contain crunchy biscuits, while sweets combine soft
centres with tiny hard pieces. These products offer more than new flavours. They create
experiences through the way food feels and sounds when eaten-a(n)3 known as texture.
Foud manufacturers have long worked to make their products appealing, but texture is now
as a major selling point.According to Mintel,a research fim,the proportion of snacks
promnoted for their texture climbed from 31%in 2023 to 41%in 2024 While "crunchy"remains
the most common description."chewy"and "gooey"are gaining33..
Achieving the4 texture,however,presents a technical challenge.Combining soft and
crunchy ingredients ()s difficult because water naturally moves from wetter materials to
drier ones.Biscuiis surroundod by chocolate may gradually lose (heir crunch.-Preserving it
requires careflly designed layers that prevent water from reaching them.
Yet manufacturers are struggling to keep pace with3:Mintel estimates that American
interest in6 snacks rose by 28%over two years, while sales volume increased by just 8%.

Several factors may accoumt for this gap.Weight-loss drugs, which rcduce appetite, may be
making consumers more7.When eating less, people may seek snacks that deliver greater
satisfaction through a combination of tas(o,sound and texture
Social media has further sped up the trend.Videos 3e.lt bifing in o crunchy foods
attract enormous audiences, particularly among younger consumers.tne sounds of eating have
become a form of entertainment in themselves, and companies are3c by creating snacks
that offer similar experiences.
For manufacturers, texture also provides an opportunity to disuinguish neir products in a
crowded market. With countless flavours already available,genuine0 in taste is
increasingly difficult.Experimenting with how food feels offers an alterna:ive way to attract
attention.
III.Reading Comprehension
Section A(15分)
Directions:For each blank in thefollowingpassage there arefour words orphrases marked A,B.
C and D.Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that besifits the context.
For most of my life, darkness simply marked the end of the day-a signal to go indoors and
turn on the lights. That changed when depression left me struggling with sleeplessness.41,I
filled my sleepless hours with reading and writing.Taen one spring night,I stretched out on the
grass in my garden under a sky full of stars. As I stared into the vast 42 above me,the
worries that had.occupied my mind seemed to lose some of their weight. For the first time in
months,I slept 43.
The experience made me wonder whether darkness might44 something that daylight
could not.Research suggests that it can.Psychologist Christopher Bames has found that spending
time safely outdoors after dark can have a 45 effect, providing both a sense of peace and an
opportunity for reflection.Other studies suggest that being beneath open skies may encourage
more flexible thinking. There is also evidence that the mind processes experience differently late
at night.Taken together, these findings suggest that darkness may influence not only what we
notice, but how we 46 the world around us.
47 by my own experience,I began exploring nearby fields after dark, watching stars
and listening for birds travelling through the night. Before long,I persuaded my children to join
me.Part of my purpose was to draw them away from their screens, but I also wanted them to
become more48 with darkness by discovering what it had to offer.
We soon learned that the character of the night changes with the moon.Having struggled
through a forest on a night so dark that we could hardly sce without torches,we began choosing
our 49 more carefully:darker nights for watching stars and brighter ones for walking and
watching wildlife. As we grew more confident outdoors, our early worries about walking in the
dark gradually 0 a sense of excitement and discovery.
The more time we spent outside after dark, the more51 we became of changes in our
senses. With fewer visual details52for our attention, sounds seemed clearer and distant
noises became easier to notice.Smells appeared stronger as well, partly because certain plants

produce stronger scents(()at night and partly because our own sense of smell may become
sharper after dark.
What had once seemed an cmpty,even53,space gradually revealed itself as a world
easily overlooked during the day.54artificial light benefits wildlife and makes the stars
easier to see, while peaceful experiences of darkness mnay also supporl sleep and mental wellbeing.
More importantly, night invites us to step outside55 patterns of seeing and thinking,
allowing us to encounter the same world from an entirely different perspective.

Section B(22分)
Directions:Read thefollowing three passages. Each passage isfollowed by several questions or
unfinished statements. For each ofthem there arefour choices marked A,B,C and D.Choose
the one thatfits best according to the information given in the passageyou havejust read.
(A)
Hundreds of competitors sat with pencils ready, their eyes fixed on the clock. At the
American Crossword Pnz7le Tournament, every second counted.A correct answer earned points,
a mistake could cost dearly, and finishing early brought a welcome bonus. When the starting
signal finally came, hundreds of papers tumed over at once. The room fell silent, apart from the
hurried movement of pencils.
I got off to a surprisingly good start.I completed four puzzles without a single mistake,
though my speed was hardly impressive Then came Puzzle Five,a challenge whose reputation
alone was enough to make experienced competitors nervous. Its clues looked innocent enough, but
the answers refused to fit.I tried one posslblllty, uossed it out,and tried another.Somewhere in
those empty squares was a clever trick, and everyone seemed to be discovering it except me.By
the time I understood the hidden pattern, the clock had already done its damage.
I expected to find equally frustrated competitors outside.instead, the hway was alive with
conversation and laughter.People compared answers, explained trieks ad cheerfully admitted
mistakes. One competitor described a clue that had completely fooled him, only to discover that

several others had fallen into exactly the same trap.Even thosc who had performed brilliantly
secmed morc interested in discussing the puzzles than cclebrating their scores.
This friendliness was particularly surprrsing given the level of compctition. Some participants
had won the tournament repeatedly, while ambitious newcomers were determined to challenge
them.Yet the compctition rarely felt personal.Unlike a gamc in which one player's victory
rcquires another's defeat, crossword solving allows everyonc to succced at the same challenge.
Somconc else's brilliant answer does not take away your chancc of finding it.
By the end of the weekend,my position in the rankings was nothing to celcbrate.Still,I
found myself looking forward to another attempl. The puzzles had defealcd me more than once,
but they had also given me somcthing unexpecled:the pleasurc of being surrounded by people
who could spend twenty minutes arguing happily over a singlc word.
56.What happened to the writer when solving Puzzle Five2
A.He struggled to understand its hidden trick.
B.He made mistakes because he worked too fast
C.He failed to finish as the clues were unfamiliar.
D.He lost confidence after seeing others'progress.
57.What surprised the writer about the competitors after the puzzles?
A.They were disappointed with their performances.
B.They were eager to learn from the game wim, ers.
C.They openly shared t!eir experiences and mistakes.
D.They spent more time discussing riles than answers.
58.What does the writer mean by "the competition rarely felt personal"(paragraph 4)?
A.Competitors rarely compared their performaness.
B.Competitors paid little attention to their rankings.
C.Competitors preferred cooperation to competitien
D.Competitors did not regard one another as enemies.
59.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The growing popularity of crossword tournaments.
B.The writer's experience at a crossword competition.
C.The challenge of becoming a skilled crossword solver.
D.The writer's efforts to compete with experienced players.

Suppose you want to write a story about the importance of patience. You could simply end it
with,"Patience brings success."But would readers remember that sentence?Probably not.A
stronger approach is to let them experience the idee through what your characters do.
Start by turning your theme into a specific situation.Instead of writing,"Tom leamed to be
patient,"show him planting a tree and checking it every moming, disappointed that nothing seems
to change. One day,he notices a tiny green leaf. The reader begins to understand his growing
patience without being directly told about it.

Next, consider using a symbol--an objcct that suggests somcthing beyond its ordinary
meaning.A trec,for example,can represent growth,hope or the results of long-term effort.The
key is to make it part of the story rather than add it simply to explain an idea.
A symbol becomes particularly effective when its role changes as the story develops.Look at
the writing plan in Figure 1.Notice how the same tree appears at different moments, whilc Tom's
actions and feclings gradually change.

Finally, trust your ending.Rather than explaining,"Tom realised that patience was
important,"you might write:"Tom leaned against the tree and watched the sunlight move across
the grass. He smiled, remembering how often he had once searched its branches for the first leaf."
The difference lies in what readers are invited to do.One ending tells them the lesson;the
other gives them enough details to discover it for themselves.
A well-developed theme should not feel like a message attached to a story. It should grow
naturally from the choices your characters make.
60.According to the passage,what makes a symbol particularly-effective in a storv?
A.Its role changes as the story develops.
B.Its appearance is described in great detail.
C.Its meaning is explained at the beginning.
D.Its connection with the theme is widely known.
61.According to the advice in the passage, which sentence would best show that a character has
learned to forgive others?
A.Emma realised that forgiving others was important.
B.Emma remembered the past and decided to forget it.
C.Emma believed that everyone deserved a second chance.
D.Emma opened the door and invited her old friend inside.
62.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To compare different ways of telling a story
B.To discuss how readers understand hidder meanings.
C.To explain how to express a theme through storytelling.
D.To introduce the importance of themes in famous stories.

The winners of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine were recognised for laying the
foundations of optogenetics,a technology that allows scientists to control individual brain cells
using light.Karl Deisseroth of Stanford University,Peter Hegemann of the Humboldt University
of Berlin and Georg Nagel of the University of Wurzburg helped develop this powerful tool,
which has transformed the study of the brain and its diseases.
The story began in the 1990s,when Hegemann was studying how a type of single-celled
algae (called Chlamydomonas responds to light. He nouced that the algae reacted faster
than cells in the human eye.In humans, detecting lighf involves several steps before an electrical
signal is produced.Hegemann suspected that the process in algae was much simpler, with a single
pibteln perfonning both functions.
Proving this was difficult until advances in genetics provided a breakthrough.Japanese
researchers identified two genes in the algae that appeared to produce light-sensitive proteins.
Working with Hegemann,Nagel introduced these genes into frogs'eggs, allowing the proteins to
be produced in quantities large enough for testing. The results confirmed Hegemann's theory:the
proteins could directly produce electrical signals in response to light.
The two scientists then introduced one of these genes into mammalian(哺乳动物的)cells
and discovered that it made them sensitive to light, too.Deisseroth took the idea further by
introducing the same gene into neurons, the cells responsible for sending signals in the brain.
Experiments showed that these modified neurons could respond to light and communicate with
neighbouring cells.
The findings, published in 2005,marked an important advance.Deisseroth's laboratory then
took the research further, successfully applying the technology to living mice.By using extremely
thin optical fibres (to direct light into specific brain regions, researchers could control
certain movements in mice by stimulating specific neurons.
Since then, optogenetics has become an important research tool, inspiring thousands of
scientific papers.Scientists now use it to investigate conditions such as depression, schizophrenia,
dementia, addiction and anxiety.Researchers are also exploring whether it could restore sight to
people with certain forms of blindness.
What began with a simple observation about algae has opened remarkable possibilities
for understanding and treating disorders of the human brain.
63.1
What was Hegemann's theory about how algae respond to light?
A.They use several proteins to detect light.
B.They produce electrical signals without ligly.
C.They rely on a single protein to respond to light.
D.They react to light in the same way as human eyes.
64.What can be inferred about optogenetics?
A.Its success depended mainly on the study of brain diseases.
B.Its early experiments were more effective in animals than in humans.
C.Its development required discoveries from different research fields.
D.Its practical applications were clear from the beginning.

65.What does the author mean by "What began with a simple observation about algae has
opened remarkable possibilities"(in the last paragraph)?
A.Small discoveries may lead to major scientific advances.
B.Simple experiments may be more useful than complex ones.
C.Scientific discoveries usually begin with unexpected results.
D.Research on basic organisms is easier than research on humans
66.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain why brain diseases are difficult to treat.
B.To introduce a new approach to understanding the brain.
C.To compare the achievements of three Nobel Prize winners.
D.To discuss the challenges of studying human brain cells.
Section C(8分)
Directions:Read the passage carefully.Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box.
Each sentence can be used only once.Niote that there are two more sentences than you need.
A.As a result, many people have begun to question whether reading printed books is a better
choice before bedtime.
B.However, the evidence is less convincing than it first appears.
C.Since several studies have linked evening screen use to poor sleep, blue light from electronic
devices has become a particular concern.
D.Such findings raise questions about products designed to block blue light.
E.The effects of screen use on sleep may also depend on what people do with their devices.
F.While reducing light exposure before bedtime may be sensible, there is little reason to focus
entirely on blue light.
Does Blue Light Really Keep Us Awake?
At bedtime, many people reach for their phones rather than a book.A 2025 survey of more
than 120 0v0 adults found that 41%used a screen every night during the hour before sleep.
61
The idea is not without scientific support. Our bodies follow a natural daily rhythm
controlled by a clock in the brain.Light plays an important role in keeping this clock working
pnoperly.Special cells in our eyes respond to light and send signals to the brain, affecting the
production of melatonin,a chemical that helps prepare the body for sleep. These cells are
especially sensitive to blue light. This explains why blue light has been widely regarded as a
possible threat to sleep.
68 In a 2015 experiment, researchers asked participanls to read either electronic or
printed books before bed.Although those using screens produced less melatonin and took longer
to fall asleep, the practical significance of these findings was limited.Participants had read for
four hours, yet screen readers took only about ten minutes longer to fall asleep.
第10页共12页
扫描全能王创建
可接只
A similar experiment in 2016 produced different results.Participants read for just two hours
and.were exposed to bright light during the day. This time, researchers found no significant
differences between the two groups in either melatonin production or sleep patterns.
69A 2023 review of 17 studies found no clear evidence that special glasses
improved sleep. The benefits of software that reduces blue light from screens also remain
uncertain
Scientists therefore wam against drawing broad conclusions from limited experiments.
70
Brightness and the length of exposure may matter more than the particular colour of
light.
For now,the practical advice is surprisingly simple:avoid excessively bright light before bed,
but there is no need to treat every blue screen as an enemy of sleep.
