A growing number of smaller companies are adopting a four-day workweek. Now the results of a recent trial at Microsoft (MSFT) suggest it could work even for major corporations.

The results were striking: While the amount of time spent at work was cut substantially ___32___ measured by sales per employee went up by nearly 40% compared to the same period the previous year, the company stated in a release last week.
In addition to curtailing working hours, managers urged staff to cut down on the time they spent in meeting and responding to emails. They recommended that meetings should last to longer than 30 minutes. Employees were also encouraged to ___33___ down the number of meetings by using an online messaging app (Microsoft’s, of course). The effects were widespread. More than 90% of Microsoft’s 2,200 employees in Japan said they were ___34___ by the new measures, according to the company. III. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
In the early 1920s, Ernest Hemingway was a little-known journalist in Europe. Then, in 1925, he published “In Our Time”, a book of short stories; in July of that year, he started to ____41____ “The Sun Also Rises”, his first novel, which fictionalized his adventures. It became the most ____42____ book about the “Lost Generation” in post war Europe.
Hemingway became famous “gradually and then suddenly”. Eight other novels and novellas followed, as did Pulitzer and Nobel prizes. He remains the most famous American novelist of his century, ____43____ mentions in Google’s collection of written or spoken a texts. His Wikipedia page also gets more views than those of his contemporaries, including F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck (see chart). Why?
There are three reasons. First nobody had ____44____ like him before. A short clean sentence is a fine thing. He knew what to____45____, as he explained: “If a writer knows enough of what he is writing about, he may omit things that he knows and if the writer is writing truly enough, the readers will have a feeling of those things strongly as though the writer had stated them.” This ____46____ style influenced writers of fiction — notably Norman Mailer, Cormac McCarthy and Raymond Carver — as well as journalists.
Second, his heroes attracted famous ____47____. He defined courage as “grace under pressure”: martially, for the soldier Frederick Henry in “A Farewell to Arms”; physically, for the fisherman Santiago in “The Old Man and the Sea”. In 1955, John F. Kennedy, the 35th US President, asked for Hemingway’s ___48___ to use this definition in his biography “Profile in Courage. John McCain, a late politician, ____49____ Hemingway’s favourite novel “For Whom the Bell Tolls” in one of his own books: “The world is a fine place and worth the ____50____ for and I hate very much to leave it.”
Third, and perhaps most important, Hemingway’s life became ____51____. He married four times, drank hard, was wounded in the First World War, reported on the Omaha Beach landings in the second, ran with the bulls in Spain and survived a plane crash in Africa. But beneath the seeming confidence, his inner world was ____52____; he suffered from depression. That has provided adequate material for biographies and documentaries.
But adaptations of his work are ____53____. Fitzgerald and Steinbeck enjoy higher ratings and more reviews on their literary works. For example, The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald has been adapted into several widely discussed films and TV series. Hemingway’s heroes, ____54____, are becoming old-fashioned. If so, he may end up like Lord Byron and Oscar Wilde: read ____55____ by a few, read about by many.

(A)
My 14-year-old son, John, and I spotted the coat almost at the same time. It was hanging at a secondhand clothing store. While the other coats looked rather depressed, this one looked as if it were holding itself up. The thick, black wool of the chesterfield (长大衣) was soft and unworn. It was beautifully tailored and had an unbelievable price tag of $28. We looked at each other, saying nothing, but John’s eyes shone. Dark, woolen coats were popular with teenage boys; but could cost several hundred dollars new. This coat was even better, bearing that touch of classic elegance from long ago.
John tried it on and turned from side to side, eyeing himself in the mirror with a serious, studied expression that soon changed into a smile. The fit was perfect.
John wore the coat to school the next day and came home with a grin. “How did the kids like your coat?” I asked. “They loved it!” he said merrily, carefully folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat.
Over the next few weeks, a change came over John. Agreement replaced protest; quiet, reasoned discussion replaced argument. He became more sensible, more polite, more thoughtful, eager to please. “Good dinner, Mom, ” he would say every evening. One day when I suggested that he might start on homework before dinner, John, who was always putting off doing stuff, said, “You’re right. I guess I will.”
When I mentioned this incident to one of his teachers and remarked that I didn’t know what caused the changes, she said laughing. “It must be his coat!” At the library, we ran into a friend who had not seen our children for a long time, “Could this be John?” he asked, looking up to John’s new height, assessing the style of his coat and extending his hand, one gentleman to another.
Sometimes, watching John leave for school, I’m reminded of what it felt like to be at his age — a time when it was as easy to try on different approaches to life as it was to try on a coat.
56. Why did John’s eyes shine when he saw the coat?
A. It was the first time that he had been to a secondhand store.
B. It was pleasant for him to share the same taste with mom.
C. He fell in love with that coat and wanted to put it on.
D. He managed to get his mom to buy him a new coat.
57. What does the underlined word “grin” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A big smile. B. A sad look. C. A jealous remark. D. An anxious thought.
58. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. There was a trend of loving such coats among teenage boys then.
B. John used to be disobedient towards parents’ demands.
C. John acted like a gentleman after wearing the coat.
D. The teacher didn’t understand why John changed a lot.
59. Which of the following might the best title?
A. A Special Shopping Experience B. A Caring Mother
C. A Magical Coat D. John’s Taste for Clothing

I was reading college freshman essays when I was slowed and stunned by these words: “My new AI Bestie.” I had assigned my students a 500-word essay on artificial intelligence. As I expected the majority of essays detailed the functions and use of ChatGPT.
What I did not anticipate was the “bestie” line in this particular piece, followed by more description of how she formed both a personal confidante and professional counseling relationship with her ChatGPT.
A recent study reports that 70% of teens have used AI companions, with half using them regularly. The mental health implications are substantial: disruption of social skills, increased isolation, loneliness, and a new form of addiction. At its best, AI is a tool that guides us downstream. But for many young people, it is becoming a wave that could overwhelm them.
What AI fails to offer us is touch, which separates humanity from machines. Humans are neurologically wired to require touch from other sentient (有感知能力的) beings. In a recent meta-analysis, German researchers confirmed that touch significantly benefits both physical and mental health. Interestingly, while robotic massage offered physical benefits, the mental health gains were notably weaker.
Growing up in the ’70s, the options for non-sentient connections were limited to stuffed animals, pet rocks, and imaginary friends. Moving into the teen years, a number of my friends held fast to their favored stuffed animals, if in a more private manner. I never engaged in any of these relationships. I did, however, spend countless hours alone in my backyard playing real basketball with imaginary opponents, complete with graceful movements and mixes of victories and defeats. This activity was my go-to in good times and bad, whether I was feeling alone or connected. The physicality calmed and complemented me. The soft leather ball in my sweaty hands. The conversation between the sun and the light breeze on my face and forearms. This rapid heart rate experience cleared my mind and opened a space for me to explore my loss or celebration. Often, it moved me to reach out to others in search of comfort and connection.
Loneliness doesn’t fade away at the borders of any time or generation. Nor does the need for us to engage all of our senses in separate and shared synergy
Following my panic after reading my student’s AI essay, I returned to my smartphone’s newsfeed. There, I saw a trend of Millennials and Gen Zers migrating towards the unplugged activities of the older generations: board games, community gardens, fishing, and vinyl records.
Reading these reports about the shift to broader, collective sensory experiences that are essential to our psychological well-being replenishes (重新充满) my hope for humanity. No, we won’t eradicate the AI footprint. That should never be the goal. AI has too much constructive value for our world. We just need to redouble our efforts to understand the benefits and limitations of its place in our lives.
63. The word “confidante” (paragraph 2) most likely refers to a person (or thing) that one can ________.
A. program with professional skills.
B. trust with private thoughts and feelings.
C. purchase at an affordable price.
D. use to complete academic assignments.
64. By stating “At its best, AI is a tool that guides us downstream. But for many young people, it is becoming a wave that could overwhelm them”, the author means that ________.
A. AI is most useful when it is used near rivers and oceans.
B. AI is a powerful force that can either assist or drown its users.
C young people are using AI to create powerful waves on social media.
D. the primary function of AI is to predict natural disasters like floods.
65. The author mentions his experience of playing basketball in the backyard mainly to ________.
A. show his personal way of coping with emotions through sensory engagement.
B. prove that imaginary relationships are far better than using AI friends.
C. argue that sports are the only solution to the problem of loneliness.
D. compare his childhood hobbies with the current trends of his students.
66. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Rise of AI: From Tools to Best Friends.
B. Why AI Can Replace Human Touch.
C. Human Touch in a Digital World.
D. How College Students Use ChatGPT to Write Essays.
Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
At a Loss for Words
Imagine a friend is heading out to face a difficult task. As a last word before they disappear, you want to encourage them. What might you say? If you are speaking English, the likeliest choice is “good luck”.
If you stop to think about it, that is a little odd. Though you might indeed hope luck smiles on your friend, neither they nor you can do much about the probability.___67___That is why the French, in this situation, say “bon courage”, not “good luck”.
English does not allow you to pair any old adjective with any old noun in a fixed expression. You may wish someone “good morning”, “good afternoon” or “good night”, but not “good weekend”.___68___However, in other languages it is perfectly usual.
___69___. English-speakers wish each other a happy birthday, but speakers of many other languages say “congratulations” as if the birthday girl had done something impressive merely by surviving another year. The Dutch also say “gefeliciteerd” to members of the family, including the one who really deserves congratulating: the mother. This is close to obligatory(义务的),while it would come as a strange surprise in English.
It is tempting to draw deep cultural conclusions from the presence of this or the absence of that in a language.___70___ For example, the English do say the typical French words bon voyage and bon appetit, and there’s no reason to stop there. Congratulate your mother-in-law on your wife’s birthday, and you can prepare for a delighted smile back. It may seem awkward or tricky at first but you can make it stick if you try.
A. Special occasions are another way in which languages differ.
B. It is natural to be critical of languages that lack expressions you think necessary.
C. What you really want to wish them is courage not fortune.
D. Having no English equivalent is annoying for those who are used to it.
E. You can say that phrase if you like, but your neighbour would look at you strangely.
F. But not having a word for something doesn’t mean you can’t coin one—or borrow it.
IV. Translation
Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.

They came to fruition in a Nordic-inspired picture book that artist Kasing Lung created. After the initial release of the book, the popular toy company Pop Mart created the first collectible collection for sale in 2019, and since then, sales have soared as new collections are released.

From collection to collection, each can be seen wearing various outfits, different facial features and fun accessories, due to ____25____ each drop seems unique. Lung says they are well-natured little creatures who have nothing but good intentions and ____26____ they sometimes inevitably end up in a difficulty.

First, nobody had ____44____ like him before.

Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
My 14-year-old son, John, and I spotted the coat almost at the same time.
D He managed to get his mom to buy him a new coat.

As I expected, the majority of essays detailed the functions and use of ChatGPT.
C. young people are using AI to create powerful waves on social media.
D. the primary function of AI is to predict natural disasters like floods.

根据第三段中的“At its best, AI is a tool that guides us downstream. But for many young people, it is becoming a wave that could overwhelm them (在最佳状态下,AI是引导我们顺流而下的工具。但对许多年轻人来说,它正变成一股可能将他们淹没的浪潮)”可知,作者用“顺流而下的工具”比喻AI的辅助作用,用“淹没的浪潮”比喻AI可能带来的负面影响(如社交技能受损、孤独感加剧等),即AI既能帮助用户,也可能对用户造成困扰。故选B项。
【65题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“The physicality calmed and complemented me. The soft leather ball in my sweaty hands. The conversation between the sun and the light breeze on my face and forearms. 【66题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,作者从学生作文中“AI挚友”的表述切入,指出AI陪伴对青少年的负面影响(缺乏触觉、加剧孤独等),通过自身经历强调人类触觉与感官互动的重要性,最后提到年轻人回归线下活动的趋势,呼吁平衡AI使用。核心围绕“数字世界中的人类触觉与感官联结”展开。C项“数字世界中的人类触觉”为最佳标题。故选C项。
C 68. E 69. A 70. F
下文“That is why the French, in this situation, say “bon courage”, not “good luck”.(这就是为什么法国人在这种情况下说“要有勇气”,而不是“祝你好运”)”提到法国人常说“bon courage”,指的是要有勇气,表示鼓励、加油等含义,关键词为courage“勇气”,空处位于段中,为承上启下,也需要提到courage。
上文“English does not allow you to pair any old adjective with any old noun in a fixed expression. You may wish someone “good morning”, “good afternoon” or “good night”, but not “good weekend”.(英语不允许你在固定表达中把任何旧形容词和任何旧名词搭配在一起。
下文“English-speakers wish each other a happy birthday, but speakers of many other languages say “congratulations” as if the birthday girl had done something impressive merely by surviving another year.(说英语的人互相祝对方生日快乐,但说其他许多语言的人说“祝贺”,好像寿星女仅仅是又活了一年就做了什么了不起的事似的。)” 故选A项。
下文“For example, the English do say the typical French words bon voyage and bon appétit, and there’s no reason to stop there.(例如,英国人确实会说典型的法语单词bon voyage和bon appétit,而且没有理由在那里停下来。)”

________________________________________________________________
If it takes you a shorter time to know exactly/perfectly/be well-informed of customers’ needs, you will be more likely to succeed in applying for a position as sales manager.
了如指掌”是know exactly/perfectly/be well-informed of,“客户的需求”是customers’ needs,“你将有更大的可能成功申请到销售经理的职位”用一般将来时,“有更大的可能做某事”是be more likely to do,“成功做某事”是succeed in doing,“申请”是apply for,用动名词作宾语,“销售经理的职位”是a position as sales manager,因此整句话翻译为“If it takes you a shorter time to know exactly/perfectly/be well-informed of customers’ needs, you will be more likely to succeed in applying for a position as sales manager”,故答案为If it takes you a shorter time to know exactly/perfectly/be well-informed of customers’ needs, you will be more likely to succeed in applying for a position as sales manager.
(as)(汉译英)
________________________________________________________________
With people’s awareness of health raised, they no longer indulge in excessive eating and drinking during holidays as they used to. As the saying goes, the key to health consists in diet.
With people’s awareness of health raised作状语,其中people’s awareness of health“大家的健康意识”作介词宾语,和raise“提高”为被动关系,故用过去分词raised作宾补;主句部分“逢年过节时不再像以前那样胡吃海喝了”,陈述事实用一般现在时。结合句意可知,主句主语为“他们”用they,表示“不再胡吃海喝了”用no longer indulge in excessive eating and drinking。“不再像以前那样”用as they used to,其中as引导的方式状语从句;表示“正所谓健康的关键在于饮食”可用as引导的非限制性定语从句,“正所谓”译为as the saying goes,“健康的关键在于饮食”主语使用名词短语the key to health,谓语动词consist in意为“在于”可作谓语,使用一般现在时第三人称单数形式,diet作其宾语。故翻译为With people’s awareness of health raised, they no longer indulge in excessive eating and drinking during holidays as they used to. As the saying goes, the key to health consists in diet.

Dear Wang Lei,
I’m glad to hear that you’ve decided to pursue Psychology, a field you’re truly passionate about. However, I understand your dilemma with your parents. Here’s my advice: try having an open and honest conversation with them. Explain why Psychology matters to you and how it aligns with your interests and career goals. You could also highlight the growing importance of Psychology in today’s society, such as its role in mental health and human behavior.
