While famous foreign architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.
Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Wang Shu, a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize — which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture — on February 28. He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.
Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus(校园) of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations.
The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The curves(曲线) of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.
Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages. He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements(元素).
Wang’s works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize.
Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. "That is only evidence that traditions once existed," he said.
"Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition means old things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created, " he said.
"Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are, " said Wang.
The study of traditions should be combined with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, he said.
4. Wang’s winning of the prize means that Chinese architects are ___________.
A. following the latest world trend
B. getting international recognition
C. working harder than ever before
D. relying on foreign architects
5. What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most?
A. Its hilly environment.
B. Its large size.
C. Its unique style.
D. Its diverse functions.
6. What made Wang’s architectural design a success?
A. The mixture of different shapes.
B. The balance of East and West.
C. The use of popular techniques.
D. The harmony of old and new.
7. What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang?
A. Spread them to the world. B. Preserve them at museums.
C. Teach them in universities. D. Recreate them in practice.

Dreams seem to occur at random, from everyday situations to unpredictable experiences. Now, a new study shows that our personal features as well as real-life events actually shape what we dream about, creating patterns in our subconsciousness (潜意识).
The study, published in Communications Psychology, analyzed thousands of dream and waking experience reports collected over four years. The researchers used natural language processing tools to quantify the structure of dreams. They found that personal features like how often someone daydreams, their attitudes about dreams, and their sleep quality all influence dream content.
Researchers noticed that dreams don’t simply replay scenes from our daily lives. Instead, dreams seem to mix familiar places like workplaces, hospitals, and schools into new scenes that blend memories with imagination. The reported dreams tended to focus more on visual details, feature more characters, and make less logical sense. They were also less self-focused and less driven by conscious thinking.
These dream transformations weren’t the same for everyone. Participants who spent more time daydreaming during the day tended to have dreams that jumped rapidly from one scene to another. Those who placed more importance on dreams described them as more vivid and immersive. Sleep quality also played a role.
The team used three large language models, LLaMA 3, ChatGPT-4, and ChatGPT-4 Turbo, to rate dream reports on 16 different features, such as mood, strangeness and freedom of movement. “By combining large-scale data with computational methods, we were able to uncover patterns in dream contents that were previously difficult to find,” Elce said. “This opens new possibilities for studying consciousness, memory, and mental health in a better way.”
8. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A. Data analysis. B. Sleep observation. C. Personal surveys. D. Life event tracking.
9. Which of the following best describes the nature of the dream?
A. Creative. B. Conscious. C. Realistic. D. Repetitive.
10. What is the main advantage of the language models?
A. Increasing the number of dream features. B. Enhancing the accuracy of human brains.
C. Simplifying more personal dream reports. D. Identifying the structures of various dreams.
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. To Control Dreams, Control Your Day. B. Better Sleep Creates Better Dreaming.
C. AI Now Fully Understands Our dreams. D. Dreams Are the Mind’s Hidden Patterns.

Sweeteners are widely used in products from yogurts to toothpaste. They claim to let people enjoy sweet tastes without gaining weight or suffering dental problems. However, a growing body of research is suggesting that these substances may bring unexpected consequences.
These sweeteners include artificial ones and plant-based substances, including a family of chemicals called sugar alcohols and stevia. Some are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, so they are added in tiny amounts to foods. Based on the observation that most are passed out of the body unchanged, scientists assumed they pass through without affecting metabolism (新陈代谢).
However, this thing might not be that simple. Short-term controlled studies have shown that replacing sugar with sweeteners does result in lower weight gain. But long-term observations have found the opposite: people who take more sweeteners tend to gain more weight than those who take the least. Other studies indicate that they also have higher rates of heart disease, high blood sugar and cancer than those who avoid them.
Proving cause and effect is difficult, as it would require considering many factors: people who use sweeteners may already be at higher risk for these diseases and are attempting to eat more healthily. Nevertheless, the overall evidence was concerning enough to cause the World Health Organization to issue an official warning in 2023, advising against using sweeteners for weight control or disease prevention. (This does not apply to people with high blood sugar.)
There are several possible explanations about how sweeteners might cause harm. Some have been found to start the same harmful processes in the stomach and digestive system as sugar. Studies on mice suggest they may affect the function of immune cells that help prevent cancers. New evidence also suggests they can upset the balance of stomach microbes, potentially allowing harmful types to grow. “There are many unanswered questions,” says Dr Herbert Tilg, “but these findings are increasing the level of concern.”
Avoiding these sweeteners is easier said than done, as food companies often combine several in one product to create a more natural taste. Regular buyers of packaged snacks or carbonated drinks will find them hard to avoid. The wise choice is to stay away from these products completely. And if you desire something sweet, choose a piece of your favourite fruit instead.
12. What did scientists assume about sweeteners based on early observations?
A. They affect the function of immune cells in mice.
B. They cause serious damage to the digestive system.
C. They result in lower weight gain over the long term.
D. They pass through the body without affecting health.
13. What do the long-term observations indicate compared with short-term studies?
A. Both short and long-term studies reach the same finding.
B. Short-term studies show loss, while long-term ones suggest gain.
C. Short-term studies are overall more reliable than long-term ones.
D. Long-term studies found higher disease rates than short-term ones.
14. What does the underlined word “upset” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Restore. B. Protect. C. Disturb. D. Measure.
15. Why is it difficult to prove that sweeteners cause health problems?
A. Sweeteners are in such tiny amounts they are hard to measure.
B. There are not enough long-term studies to support the findings.
C. People choosing sweeteners may already face health conditions.
D. Most sweeteners go through the body without leaving any trace.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We all know that our dogs have feelings, and that they can be happy or sad. But, do dogs actually cry real tears when they get sad? Dogs are highly sensitive pets, and they experience a variety of emotions, just like humans. ____16____ They might just have watery eyes. As far as scientists know, humans are the only species that cry for emotional reasons.
Dogs do “cry” when they’re sad. However, dogs use voices to express feelings rather than having watery eyes. They begin doing this at a young age by crying out for their moms when in trouble. ____17____ As they get older, dogs may continue this whining (哀鸣) when sad.
Once they have matured, dogs consider their human owners to be the pack leader, or mother figure, and will direct their whining or crying towards them. Many specialists believe dogs suffering from separation anxiety will whine for their mothers. ____18____
____19____ They can also be sad, in pain or attempting to let you know that they’re feeling uncomfortable or want something. Also, dogs may howl (嗥叫) occasionally, which is just another form of “crying”. In fact, many experts believe that howling is a dog’s ultimate expression of sadness.
If dogs don’t produce emotional tears, why do they tear up at all? Studies show there is oftentimes a medical reason behind dogs having tears. ____20____ A dog’s tear ducts (泪管) work somewhat differently. For dogs, the tears or liquid will flow back into the throat and nose rather than from the eyes.
A. This is because dogs are social animals.
B. However, no science proves dogs cry for sadness.
C. Separation anxiety isn’t the only cause of dogs whining.
D. Similarly, when sad, they go to their parent-like person.
E. Virtually, that may be a sign of a serious health condition.
F. The reasons for dogs crying or howling are exactly the same.
G. They learn to make distinct sounds that can be recognized instantly.

My name is Mae. I’ve always been passionate about exploring and solving problems — whether fixing a broken toy or figuring out how a phone app works. This led me to join our school’s Coding (编程) Club. In our first lesson, Ms. Davis told us that coding is more than writing lines of code. It is about using technology to make life easier for others.
“Your project,” she announced in class one day, “is to create a simple app that solves a real-life problem.” “You have one week to prepare,” she added gently, hoping this would give us enough time to find inspiration and finish the project.
The challenge stayed with me as I walked to my neighbor Mrs. Thompson’s apartment after school. She had invited me for tea, as she often did on Tuesdays. Mrs. Thompson was kind and cheerful, but lately she had been a little forgetful, often misplacing her keys or repeating the same story twice without realizing it. When I arrived, she was in the kitchen.
“Mae! Good timing,” she greeted me warmly, and then stopped, glancing at the kettle. “Did I already boil water for tea?”
I checked the kettle — it was still warm. We laughed about it as I poured water, and soon we were chatting. Our conversation turned to her weekly book club with friends. Mrs. Thompson smiled, talking about her two old friends. Mr. Brown arrived late for the game, and Mrs. Smith failed to bring her glasses twice. “We’re quite a group,” she said.
Then her expression grew thoughtful. “We manage, of course. But sometimes I think wouldn’t it be nice if something simply reminds us? Take medicine. Water the plants. Friday for book club.” She tapped her head with a soft laugh.
Her words sank in. At that moment, an idea formed in my mind. As I stood up to leave, I smiled mysteriously, “Give me a few days, and I’ll bring you a little surprise.”
“Oh? I’ll try not to forget that,” she laughed.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

B. The balance of East and West.
C. The use of popular techniques.
D. The harmony of old and new.
7. What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang?
A. Spread them to the world. B. Preserve them at museums.
C. Teach them in universities. D. Recreate them in practice.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. D

【答案】8. A 9. A 10. D 11. D

【导语】文章主要介绍了一项新研究,表明个人特征和现实生活事件会塑造梦境内容,并在潜意识中形成模式。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“The study, published in Communications Psychology, analyzed thousands of dream and waking experience reports collected over four years. The researchers used natural language processing tools to quantify the structure of dreams.(这项发表在《传播心理学》上的研究分析了四年来收集的数千份梦境和清醒体验报告。研究人员使用自然语言处理工具来量化梦境的结构)”可知,研究人员是通过分析数据来进行这项研究的。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Instead, dreams seem to mix familiar places like workplaces, hospitals, and schools into new scenes that blend memories with imagination. The reported dreams tended to focus more on visual details, feature more characters, and make less logical sense.(相反,梦境似乎将工作场所、医院和学校等熟悉的地方混合成新的场景,将记忆与想象融合在一起。报告的梦境往往更注重视觉细节,具有更多角色,且逻辑性较差)”可知,梦境会将记忆与想象融合,创造出新的场景,因此具有创造性。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The team used three large language models, LLaMA 3, ChatGPT-4, and ChatGPT-4 Turbo, to rate dream reports on 16 different features, such as mood, strangeness and freedom of movement. “By combining large-scale data with computational methods, we were able to uncover patterns in dream contents that were previously difficult to find,” Elce said.(该团队使用三种大型语言模型,LLaMA 3、ChatGPT-4和ChatGPT-4 Turbo从情绪、陌生感和运动自由度等16个不同特征维度对梦境报告进行评分。“通过将大规模数据与计算方法相结合,我们能够发现以前很难找到的梦内容中的模式,”Elce说)”可知,语言模型的主要优势是识别各种梦境的结构。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Now, a new study shows that our personal features as well as real-life events actually shape what we dream about, creating patterns in our subconsciousness.(现在,一项新研究表明,我们的个人特征和现实生活事件实际上塑造了我们的梦境,在潜意识中创造了模式)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍梦境并非随机,而是受个人特征影响,并在潜意识中形成隐藏模式,因此D项“梦境是心灵的隐藏模式”最适合作为本文标题。
D
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. C

【导语】本文介绍了甜味剂的使用现状,对比短期与长期研究的不同结论,分析甜味剂潜在健康风险以及因果难以证实的原因。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Based on the observation that most are passed out of the body unchanged, scientists assumed they pass through without affecting metabolism (新陈代谢). (基于大多数甜味剂会原样排出体外这一观察结果,科学家曾假设它们穿过人体,不会影响新陈代谢)”可知,科学家基于早期观察假设甜味剂在穿过人体排出时保持原样,不会影响人体的新陈代谢(即不影响健康)。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Short-term controlled studies have shown that replacing sugar with sweeteners does result in lower weight gain. But long-term observations have found the opposite: people who take more sweeteners tend to gain more weight (短期对照研究表明,用甜味剂代替糖确实会使体重增加较少;但长期观察得出相反结果:摄入更多甜味剂的人往往体重增加更多)”可知,短期研究显示减少,而长期研究显示增加。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“New evidence also suggests they can upset the balance of stomach microbes, potentially allowing harmful types to grow. (新证据还表明它们会____胃部微生物的平衡,有可能让有害微生物繁殖。)”可知,they(指代甜味剂)会“upset”胃部微生物的平衡,从而导致有害菌群的生长。由此可推断,upset在此处意为“打破,扰乱”,与“Disturb(扰乱)”意义相近。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Proving cause and effect is difficult, as it would require considering many factors: people who use sweeteners may already be at higher risk for these diseases and are attempting to eat more healthily. (证明其中的因果关系很难,因为需要考虑诸多因素:选择甜味剂的人或许本身患病风险就更高,他们正尝试吃得更健康。)”可知,证明甜味剂导致健康问题的因果关系很困难,因为选择使用甜味剂的人可能本身就已经处于患病的高风险之中(即已经面临潜在的健康状况)。

【答案】16. B 17. G 18. D 19. C 20. E

My Hero — Yuan Longping
The scientist I admire most is Yuan Longping, known as the “Father of Hybrid Rice”. Born in 1930, he devoted almost his whole life to rice research.
I respect him greatly for two reasons. First, he developed hybrid rice, which greatly increased rice output and helped feed more people around the world. Second, he was hard-working and modest. Even when famous, he kept working in fields and cared little about fame or money.
His spirit encourages me to study hard and try to make a difference in the future.

【答案】 That night, I sat at my desk, notebook open and mind racing with details. I decided to design a gentle reminder app especially for the elderly. I listed simple functions: important dates, daily tasks, and warm notes. I focused on making the words big and the buttons easy to touch. Whenever I felt stuck, I thought of Mrs. Thompson’s kind smile and her wish for something to help her remember. I carefully tested every part again and again, making sure it was simple and helpful. Deep in my heart, I hoped this little app could bring convenience and warmth to her and more elderly people.
A week later, I presented my project to Ms. Davis. I introduced the app’s purpose and showed how it worked. Ms. Davis praised my thoughtful idea and spoke highly of my project. After class, I brought the app to Mrs. Thompson. She was delighted and tried it at once. “This is exactly what I need,” she said happily. Watching her smile, I truly understood what Ms. Davis had meant: coding is not just code, but a way to use technology to care for others.
