At just 14 years old, Ryan Hickman from San Juan Hills High School, US, attracts a lot of eyes with a beach clean-up activity. On April 20, 2024, he and many volunteers started a five-week activity to pick up rubbish from five beaches along the Southern California coast and even some beaches in Mexico. He has collected about 2 million bottles from beaches, lakes and rivers since he was 2 years old.
“The rubbish ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Ryan told The Orange County Register. “I really can’t endure the pollution any more. Picking up a piece of rubbish may save a turtle’s life.”
Ryan first learned about the influence of pollution at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC太平洋海洋哺乳动物中心) in Laguna Beach. Watching the videos of ocean pollution there encouraged him to think about what he could do to help save them.
From a young age, he has developed a love for recycling. He kept collecting rubbish and bottles for a long time. One day, Ryan knew from the workers in PMMC that saving sea animals needed money. “Why not sell the bottles?” he thought. In 2017, Ryan handed a $10,000 check to the PMMC after picking up 50,000 pounds of rubbish and more than 200,000 recyclable bottles.
Ryan has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about what kids can do for the protection of sea animals. He said, “It’s meaningful. I’ll keep on doing it.”

You may feel that math is difficult and boring. Is it possible that you’ve been looking at math in the wrong way? Li Xing, a math professor at Ningxia University, thinks math can be beautiful and fun. I completely agree with what he said.
Numbers are beautiful
Many people today want to have beautiful looks. There is math hidden in beautiful human bodies. Measure (测量) the length from your head to your belly button and from your belly button to your feet. The ratio (比例) of these two numbers is always around 0.618. This is the golden ratio, which can be seen everywhere, like in nature, music and paintings.
In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers. As Li Bai wrote, “My boat has left ten thousand mountains far away,” “A thousand miles in one day”, —all these numbers show how fast Li Bai traveled and how happy he felt.
Curves (曲线) are beautiful
“Sine curves” are beautiful. They go towards the two opposite directions on and on without ever ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching the waves slowly moving. “Tangent curve” (正切曲线) is like a waterfall, just as Li Bai wrote, “dashing (冲) down three thousand feet from on high.”
Formulas (公式) are beautiful
There are some amazing formulas. Take the Pythagorean theorem for instance: in a right-angled triangle, the square of the longest side equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Isn’t that fascinating? As the Chinese-American mathematician Chen Xingshen once said, “it is truly enjoyable!”
36. If the ratio of a thing is around 0.618,________.
A. it has a golden color B. it only happens in human bodies
C. it looks like a human body D. it might bring people a sense of beauty
37. Why does the writer mention Li Bai and his poems in the passage?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To support his opinion.
C. To share the beauty of Li Bai’s poems. D. To offer advice on learning math.
38. What does a tangent curve look like?
A. B. C. D.
39. What does the underlined word “equals” probably mean?
A. the same as B. more than C. less than D. different from
40. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why math is beautiful and fun. B. Why math is difficult and boring
C. How we can learn math in a right way. D. How math helps us live a better life.
D
①Do you yawn? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.
②We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.
③Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
④Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (拉伸) the muscles (肌肉) in your face, mouth, and neck. Your ear drums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things.
⑤In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.
⑥Scientists don’t spend a lot of time studying yawning. Maybe it’s because yawning doesn’t hurt. It’s just something we do in our daily lives. But who knows? There might be many interesting things about yawning that we still don’t know.
41. What does the underlined word “contagious” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Able to spread quickly. B. Able to breathe easily.
C. Able to change easily. D. Able to sleep quickly.
42. Why do Olympic runners often yawn before a race?
A. They are too tired or too bored.
B. A yawn can let good things in.
C. A yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
D. A yawn can stretch the muscles in their faces.
43. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. Reasons for yawning B. Advantages of yawning
C. Problems of yawning D. Different ideas about yawning.
44. What can we probably infer (推测) from the last paragraph?
A. People use different ways to yawn.
B. We should do more research on yawning.
C. It’s hard to notice things quickly while yawning.
D. Some scientists think yawning is good for people.
45. What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

根据前文“stayed with the top group”、“kept a steady speed”和后文“the final part(最后赛段)”,马拉松比赛前期要留存体力留给后半程。
应用serious,固定搭配be serious about意为“对……认真、投入”,符合语境。若用nervous“紧张的”,不符合坚持训练的状态;curious“好奇的”,搭配be curious about意为“对……好奇”,和长期刻苦训练语境不符。
【20题详解】
句意:多年来,他严格训练。
根据后一句“He woke up early every morning and ran for hours, no matter the weather”,说明训练要求严苛。
