Bitcoin has been all over the news lately.Apparently, the idea of money that's not tied to a
如
specific bank-or a specific country-is appealing to many. But it's worth remembering that the
banking system that we now all live with is just that:a modern invention.
In the past, money's makeup varied from place to place, depending on what was
considered valuable there.Today,on an island in the Pacific,a specific type of shell still
意
serves as currency-and some people there are even hoarding it,convinced that one day,
it will make them wealthy beyond imagination.
On Malaita, the largest island that's part of the Solomon Islands, shells are accepted
at most places in exchange for goods.
“How much tuna(金枪鱼肉)you can get for your shells depends on their color and
shape,"Mary Bruno,a shop owner from the city of Auki on Malaita, said."One string of
darker shells might get you about two cans of tuna, but the red ones are worth more. For
的
the red ones, one string might get enough tuna to feed a big family for a long time.
There's only one place on the island where the shells, which are polished and strung
together to form 3-foot-long ropes, are made. The strings of red, white, and black shells all come
from the Langa Langa Lagoon.Once trapped out on the islands, the locals needed a currency to
use among themselves, and so the shell currency was born.
杯
Using shells for money was common throughout the Pacific islands as late as the early
1900s,but Malaita is unique in that they all still were used today. And just like Bitcoin,
阳
there are those who think the islanders are smart to invest (in this type of money,
which is reported to have risen in value over the last three decades. It might seem strange to
感
keep a bunch of processed,strung-together shells, but what is a pile of dollars?

The personal development author Napoleon Hill once wrote,"Whatever the mind of
man can conceive and believe,it can achieve.Regardless of how many times you may have
failed in the past or how lofty(崇高的)your aims and hopes may be..”
This statement is especially powerful because it reminds us that we are the only ones
who can be responsible for how far we will go.To reach any personal objective,we're
usually required to go beyond what is safe.
Stepping outside of our comfort zone is probably the most important step toward
experiencing the real change. But consistency (and continuing to move forward are
equally important,as it's extremely easy to slip back into old habits without realizing it.
For a long time,I knew that I wanted to live in Argentina,so I bought a one-way ticket
there halfway through my bachelor's degree. While I was in Argentina,I was able to finish
the last two years of my course online before flying home for graduation.
I currently still live in Argentina, and I can proudly say that taking the necessary steps
to make it a reality was one of the most important things I ever did.Of course,I'm not
implying that we should all buy one-way tickets to foreign countries and just see what
happens. But it's important for us to recognize what we want and try to bring our dreams to
life.
Living in a comfort zone can trick us into believing that we have plenty of time when,
in reality, years can fly by without us having accomplished what we really wanted to.
Remember,we won't always have tomorrow to do what we could have done today. So,
enjoy the discomfort we won't always have tomorrow to do what we could have done today.
So,enjoy the discomfort and allow it to encourage you to try new things. You never know
what you could be missing out on by remaining complacent(自满的).
24.What does the author mean by quoting Napoleon Hill's words?
A.Hard work is the key to achieving aims.
B.We should never lose faith even if we fail.
C.Our life is full of all kinds of possibilities.
D.Our own thoughts decide how far we will go.
25.What does the author suggest doing in order to achieve our aims?
A.Going beyond what is safe and sticking to it.
B.Getting rid of all our old habits and moving forward.
C.Living a stable life and making good use of our time.
D.Moving to another place to experience a different life.
—6
26.What do we know about the author from his experience?
A.He failed to get his bachelor's degree.
B.He moved back home after graduation.
C.He was satisfied with his decision about his one-way ticket.
D.He was not sure if he would enjoy the life in Argentina.
27.What is the author's main purpose in writing this article?
A.To share some of his important decisions in life.
B.To show that we should be content with our lives.
C.To persuade readers to step out of their bosses zones and pursue what they really want.
D.To tell readers that they have plenty of time and always have tomorrow to do what
they want.

WeGrow, where farming is part of the curriculum. They were interacting with WeGrow

program for kids to connect with We Work community members with careers in areas kids
might be interested in.But the main concern is that standardized tests are not available to
measure the students'overall progress.

Two deer jumped out in front of 16-year-old Amanda Floyd's car.She put on the
brake,stopping the car just in time.But later,she started texting.Distracted,Amanda
turned left and right, then crashed into another car.Luckily, she wasn't in a real car-she
was in a driving simulator(模拟器)at Roosevelt High School,Ohio,US.“I never really
realized that cars make a turn that much,"Amanda,a junior, said. She added that she
wouldn't text while driving anymore.
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT)and Ohio State Highway Patrol
brought the simulator to the school. They said they wanted to help students learn about the
danger of driving while drunk, texting,or talking on the phone.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving
claimed 3,450 lives in 2016 alone.Experts believe the actual figure is probably higher.
The simulator is basically a computer program.Like many computer games,it was a
hit with the students. They lined up and crowded around to watch each other take turns.
The simulator has a steering wheel(方向盘),brake and gas pedal(油门).It is made up of
three large computer screens on a table.
Students choose a distraction, such as driving while drunk or texting. They always
crash,of course. Then, they are pulled over by the police to be taught the bad results of
their driving:how much damage they've caused, what their fine is,if anyone died in the
accident, and if they're going to go to prison.
"It teaches how to drive without being on the road, said Shante Thompson,16.She
had just crashed into a deer.
ODOT spokesman Justin Chesnic said hundreds of kids have gone behind the wheel so
far.He said even more have benefited from watching their classmates.
"Driving is such a major responsibility,so take it seriously,"he said."Put away your
cellphone.A lot of the accidents out there are because of distracted driving. It can not only
change your life, but change someone else's life forever. The results are serious.

Once, when I was a teenager,my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for
the circus. Finally there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me.There were eight children, all probably
under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.Their clothes were
not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved,all of them standing
in line,two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about
the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or
sisters in a low voice. One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised
to be a highlight of their young lives.
The father and mother were at the head of the line, standing proud as they could be.
The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say,"You are my
knight in shining armor."He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if
to say,"You got that right".The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted.
He proudly responded,"Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so
I can take my family to the circus."
The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, lowered her head and
her lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked,"How much did you
say?"The ticket lady told him the price again. The man obviously didn't have enough
money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough
money to take them to the circus?Actually we were not wealthy in one sense,so I
understood how the kids would feel.I felt sorry for them.
Paragraph 1:
Seeing what was going on,my dad seemed to have an idea.
Paragraph 2:
Then my father and I went back home.
