Here are four places that I’m always thrilled to eat at, for every budget. Leftfield Every neighbourhood deserves a restaurant like this: one where you feel like an invited guest on every visit. This family-run bistro has wonderful views over Bruntsfield Links towards Arthur’s Seat. On the menu you’ll find the freshest Scottish seafood, cooked with creativity and care. Start with Shetland mussels (£12), then try sea trout, and wild garlic butter sauce (£20). Pomelo On cold days I daydream about hot hand-ripped noodles at Pomelo: chewy and spicy with Sichuan peppercorns (£11.50). Chef Jun Au’s vibrant take on modern Chinese cooking is fresh and fun with a small changing menu. Come for the noodles at lunchtime, or in the evening for family-style dishes to share (from £8.50). To secure your spot, we recommend that you book in advance. Spaces do fill quickly. Montrose Montrose offers Scottish ingredients at a more affordable price. The award-winning drinks list includes low-intervention wines, homemade bitters and soft drinks. In the wine bar, order oysters and olives, then playful dishes like suyo cucumber, burnt vegetable dressing and egg yolk (£8). The weekend set lunch is a delicious demonstration of this kitchen’s creativity. The Palmerston Few restaurants have claimed the heart of Edinburgh residents quite like The Palmerston. It’s a bright airy space, a former bank branch transformed into an elegant easy-going restaurant. Sustainability and local produce guide the menus, with proper starters, mains and puddings. Settle in with a large plate of baked Berkshire pork (£27) with a glass of something delicious. 21. What do we know about Pomelo? A. It has a set menu. B. It can get quite busy. C. It takes no reservations. D. It serves only noodles. 22. Which restaurant can you go to for sustainable food? A. Leftfield. B. Pomelo. C. Montrose. D. The Palmerston. 23. What’s the purpose of the text? A. To compare food prices. B. To describe creative menus. C. To share dining experiences. D. To introduce food destinations. B Nick Dowling was the only person in the doctor’s waiting room when the practice nurse came out, glanced around and said to the receptionist with a confused look: “I was expecting to meet a student here.” Dowling raised his hand. At 60, he has undertaken an apprenticeship (实习) and hopes to qualify as a registered nursing associate this autumn. Dowling grew up in Scotland. He graduated from an engineering degree in the mid-1980s, and at 21, headed to the US. He found work at a local nursing home, feeding patients and emptying their bedpans. The shock and initial distaste were so great that he vowed (发誓) not to return after his first shift. But the senior nurse persuaded him to stick at it — “probably because of the level of care she showed for the patients”, he says. He stayed for six months, after which he settled in England and into a “proper job” and thought little more of it. The “proper” career was in management for a range of manufacturing companies. Rather than having a career plan, Dowling has always kept in mind the advice he once heard to keep his “eyes open to opportunities and have the courage to seize them”. “I knew I needed to start at the bottom. An ad came up for a healthcare assistant with a team called responsive services,” he says. “It took me a long time to actually make the connection and think: hang on, I’ve done this work before, as a naive 21-year-old. And then there was something about a circle closing… And there definitely is now, further down the track.” “T.S. Eliot wrote [in Four Quartets]: ‘The end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time,’” he says. “There might be a bit of that going on.” While the original work was accidental, now it is a choice. And although it’s tiring, Dowling hopes to have a seven-year career after he qualifies. As a specialist in change management, does he know why he sought this move? “I value learning,” he says. “And I think learning and change are synonymous (同义词).” 24. What made the practice nurse confused? A. The empty waiting room. B. The doctor’s whereabouts. C. The identity of the apprentice. D. The receptionist’s arrangement. 25. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Dowling’s nursing experience. B. The senior nurse’s persuasion. C. Dowling’s return to the UK. D. The senior nurse’s care for patients. 26. Why did Dowling quote T.S. Eliot’s words? A. To express his love for poetry. B. To justify his return to nursing. C. To reflect on his missteps in career. D. To stress the need for career planning. 27. What message does Dowling want to convey in the last paragraph? A. Learning requires a great effort. B. Learning helps make wiser choices. C. Learning must begin at an early age. D. Learning and change are inseparable. C Bumblebees can use tools to solve a problem, according to experiments that demonstrate their remarkably advanced cognitive (认知) abilities. In the latest research led by Olli Loukola, an ecologist at the University of Turku in Finland, the bees were first trained to associate a blue artificial flower with a reward of sugar water. During the test, the flower was moved to the ceiling of a transparent chamber whose ceiling was too high for them to reach, but with insufficient space for them to hover (盘旋). A ball was also introduced into the chamber. To reach the flower, the bee had to roll the ball under it and climb on top — a behavioural sequence they had never been trained to perform. In the most basic version of the test, 95% of the bees were successful in reaching the flower. A question remained, however, about whether the bees were really solving the problem. An alternative possibility was that the bees simply enjoyed the sensation of rolling a ball along and — separately — were attracted towards the blue dot, meaning that they fortuitously ended up positioning the ball in the right spot. To test this, the scientists put the bees through increasingly complex versions of the challenge. In the final setup, the bees were allowed to explore a left and right chamber, one of which featured the artificial flower, before the ball was introduced. The scientists then illuminated (照亮) the chamber with red light, preventing the bees from seeing the blue flower, and introduced the ball. To complete the task, the bees needed to recall the location of the flower and position the ball beneath it. This time, some 80% of the bees rolled the ball under the blue circle, convincing Loukola that the bees had solved the problem spontaneously. It’s a first, he says, for an insect with a brain the size of a sesame seed. The cognitive flexibility that Loukola’s individual bees demonstrated may pay off in the wild when environmental conditions change suddenly. “Today they might find flowers from here, but tomorrow those flowers are not blooming anymore,” says Loukola. “If the workers can flexibly find new ways to get food for the colony, that’s the skill that they need to have.” 28. What task did researchers set for the bees? A. Reaching the blue flower. B. Hovering above the ceiling. C. Getting a sip of sugar water. D. Rolling the ball into the chamber. 29. What does the underlined word “fortuitously” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Surprisingly. B. Tirelessly. C. Cautiously. D. Accidentally. 30. What was the function of the red light in the chamber? A. Making the ball invisible. B. Brightening up the chamber. C. Blocking the blue flower from view. D. Confusing the left and right chambers. 31. What does the last paragraph focus on? A. The implication of the findings. B. Possible direction for further study. C. A call for protecting animal habitats. D. Genuine concern about bees’ survival. D Nearly half of Americans and around 40% of Britons now use smartwatches, smart rings, or phone apps to track their sleep. But are these devices accurate? And do they actually help? A new study published in Nature found a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and biological ageing, which provides a standard to judge whether the sleep-tracking tools work properly. Using data from roughly 500,000 people, researchers discovered that those who slept between 6.4 and 7.8 hours per night showed slower ageing than those who slept either more or less. Sleep trackers promise to help users hit this sweet spot. Most trackers distinguish sleep from wakefulness fairly well. Several studies have compared them to polysomnography (多导睡眠监测) — the gold standard that uses monitors to record eye movements, brain activity and heart rate. A 2024 paper found that three popular wearables agreed with polysomnography about 95% of the time in telling sleep from wakefulness. However, trackers become less reliable when identifying different sleep stages. A good night requires cycling between REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep and several stages of non-REM sleep. Wearables match polysomnography on sleep-stage classification only 50-80% of the time. “That earns a C+ to B+,” says Harvard scientist Rebecca Robbins. Yet many devices still include these inaccurate readings in their sleep scores. Despite trackers’ shortcomings, most sleep researchers view them positively. They say the devices give them a better, more objective sense of how long they slept. Plus, they do seem to improve sleep habits. In a survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine 55% of adults who reported using sleep trackers said they had changed their behaviour after learning from the data. One small study, published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in 2020, found that wearing a sleep tracker for a week improved self-reported sleep quality. Too much data can have downsides, though. Unlike trying to eat healthily or exercise, putting more thought and effort into sleeping can backfire. As many as 30% of sleep-tracker users report feeling anxious about their data — and that anxiety can feed into a vicious cycle, since concern about poor sleep is itself one of the most common causes of sleepless nights. But sleep data is not worth losing sleep over. There is a simpler alternative: whether you wake up feeling rested is the best indicator of how good your night actually was. 32. What is the key finding of the new study? A. Longer sleep ensures health. B. Sleep duration impacts aging. C. Middle-aged people sleep less. D. Sleep trackers are widely used. 33. What can be inferred about sleep trackers? A. They misjudge sleep stages. B. They match the gold standard. C. They exactly track brain waves. D. They poorly sense wakefulness. 34. What does the author suggest for judging sleep? A. Ignoring sleep data. B. Listening to your body. C. Using simpler devices. D. Relying on trackers’ scores. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. New Findings on Sleep Cycles. B. Ways to Judge Sleep Quality. C. Sleep Trackers: Help or Harm? D. Can Sleep Data Cause Anxiety? Beyond Paper — The Culture of Giving Cards The tradition of sending greeting cards has survived the rise of digital communication. The picture on the cover showed a peaceful view of the sea: a lighthouse, calm blue waters, and a sky painted in soft evening light. I stared at it with determination — but also with doubt. Could I really piece this together? At first, I started with excitement, picking up random pieces and trying to fit them together. But nothing worked. Every attempt failed, and soon the puzzle looked like a mess. Frustration grew inside me. “This is impossible,” I said quietly, pushing a few pieces aside. Just then, my grandfather walked into the room. He had been reading by the window. “Having trouble already?” he asked with a gentle smile. I said, “They all look the same. I don’t even know where to start.” He laughed a little and sat down beside me. “Every puzzle starts with patience. Begin with the edges,” he said, his voice calm and certain. That was the first turning point. Taking a deep breath, I followed his wisdom. I searched carefully for the straight-edged pieces. Slowly, the outside line began to take shape. Mountains of pieces suddenly seemed a little smaller. For a while, things moved along well. I grouped similar colors together — sky blues in one group, sea greens in another. My grandfather watched quietly, occasionally pointing out a corner piece I had missed. I began to feel proud of my system. But just when I thought I had mastered it, I ran into another problem. Some pieces looked nearly identical. I forced them into spots that seemed right, only to realize later that the picture didn’t line up. My “perfect system” had failed. I felt upset again. Grandfather smiled knowingly. “You can’t force what doesn’t fit,” he said gently. “Sometimes it’s better to wait and look again.” Paragraph 1: Grandfather’s words stayed in my mind as I studied the pieces once more. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Grandfather nodded with satisfaction as I placed the final piece into its spot. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2027届湖北名校联盟Z20高三上学期期中考试英语试卷 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段录音。 Which event are the speakers celebrating today? How can they really understand the world if they can’t tell what’s real? M: You’re right. My colleagues and I have talked about this too. W: The other day, Anna was crying over an AI video that said her favorite band had broken up, only it wasn’t true. M: Oh, yes. Many of my students also fell for that one. W: Hi-tech parenting is no joke! Mom and Dad never had these kinds of worries when we were growing up! M: True. But like it or not, the technology isn’t going anywhere. Tourists will visit us in July, looking for a welcoming, clean, and well-cared-for town. Therefore, it’s time to pull together for a good spring clean! The town council has replaced all bins with smart garbage sorting and recycling stations, so please familiarize local residents with how to use them. Additionally, we need volunteers for regular litter checks to keep the streets rubbish-free. Over the next few months, the council will also hold events to clean up rivers and parks, repaint signs, clean writing off walls, and plant flowers. It will be a great chance to bring new life to our communities. The town website will update the information regularly. Every small effort helps — let’s show everyone what a wonderful town we have! B 22. D 23. 根据Pomelo部分中的“To secure your spot, we recommend that you book in advance. Spaces do fill quickly.(为确保有座位,我们建议你提前预订。座位很快就会满。)”可知,Pomelo这家餐厅座位紧张,会十分繁忙。 【22题详解】 细节理解题。根据The Palmerston部分中的“Sustainability and local produce guide the menus, with proper starters, mains and puddings.(可持续理念与本地食材主导菜单,提供地道的前菜、主菜和甜点。)” 根据第一段中的“Here are four places that I’m always thrilled to eat at, for every budget.(下面是四家我总想去品尝美食的地方,适合各种预算。)” B Nick Dowling was the only person in the doctor’s waiting room when the practice nurse came out, glanced around and said to the receptionist with a confused look: “I was expecting to meet a student here.” Dowling raised his hand. C 25. A 26. B 27. 根据第一段“Nick Dowling was the only person in the doctor’s waiting room when the practice nurse came out, glanced around and said to the receptionist with a confused look: “I was expecting to meet a student here.” Dowling raised his hand. At 60, he has undertaken an apprenticeship (实习) and hopes to qualify as a registered nursing associate this autumn.(尼克・道林正独自待在医生候诊室里,这时执业护士走了出来,环顾四周,一脸困惑地对前台说:“我还以为会在这里见到一名学生。” 道林举起了手。现年 60 岁的他正在参加学徒培训,希望今年秋天能取得注册护理助理资质。)”可知,让护士困惑的是学徒的身份。 【25题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段“He found work at a local nursing home, feeding patients and emptying their bedpans.(他在当地一家养老院找到了工作,负责给病人喂食、倒便盆。)”和“He stayed for six months, after which he settled in England and into a “proper job” and thought little more of it.(他留下来干了六个月,之后定居英格兰,找到了一份 “正经工作”,这件事也就渐渐被抛在了脑后。)” 根据倒数第三段““I knew I needed to start at the bottom. An ad came up for a healthcare assistant with a team called responsive services,” he says. “It took me a long time to actually make the connection and think: hang on, I’ve done this work before, as a naive 21-year-old. And then there was something about a circle closing… And there definitely is now, further down the track.”(“当时有一则招聘启事,是应急服务团队招聘医疗助理,” 他说,“我花了很久才反应过来,心里想:等等,我 21 岁懵懂的时候,就做过这类工作。那一刻有种兜兜转转回到原点的感觉…… 如今一路走来,这种感受愈发真切。”)”可知,道林引用T.S.艾略特的话是为了阐释自己重返护理行业的缘由与心境。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段““I value learning,” he says. “And I think learning and change are synonymous (同义词).”(“我重视学习,”他说,“我认为学习和变革是同义词。”)” C Bumblebees can use tools to solve a problem, according to experiments that demonstrate their remarkably advanced cognitive (认知) abilities. A 29. D 30. C 31. 根据第二段“In the latest research led by Olli Loukola, an ecologist at the University of Turku in Finland, the bees were first trained to associate a blue artificial flower with a reward of sugar water. During the test, the flower was moved to the ceiling of a transparent chamber whose ceiling was too high for them to reach, but with insufficient space for them to hover (盘旋). A ball was also introduced into the chamber. To reach the flower, the bee had to roll the ball under it and climb on top — a behavioural sequence they had never been trained to perform.(在由芬兰图尔库大学生态学家Olli Loukola领导的最新研究中,熊蜂首先被训练将一朵蓝色人造花与糖水奖励联系起来。测试期间,这朵花被移到透明舱室的顶部,舱顶太高,熊蜂够不着,但空间又不足以让它们盘旋。舱内还放入了一个球。为了够到花,熊蜂必须把球滚到花下方,然后爬到球上面——这是一套它们从未被训练过的行为序列。)”可知,研究人员给熊蜂设定的任务是够到蓝色的花。 【29题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段中“An alternative possibility was that the bees simply enjoyed the sensation of rolling a ball along and — separately — were attracted towards the blue dot, meaning that they fortuitously ended up positioning the ball in the right spot.(另一种可能性是,蜜蜂只是单纯喜欢滚球的感觉,并且——另外——被蓝色圆点吸引,这意味着它们fortuitously把球放到了正确的位置。)” 根据第四段中“The scientists then illuminated (照亮) the chamber with red light, preventing the bees from seeing the blue flower, and introduced the ball. To complete the task, the bees needed to recall the location of the flower and position the ball beneath it.(然后科学家用红光照射舱室,阻止熊蜂看到蓝色的花,并引入球。为了完成任务,熊蜂需要回忆花的位置,并把球放到花下面。)”可知,红光的作用是挡住蓝色花朵,使其不被熊蜂看到。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“The cognitive flexibility that Loukola’s individual bees demonstrated may pay off in the wild when environmental conditions change suddenly.(Loukola研究的个别熊蜂所表现出的认知灵活性,可能在环境条件突然变化时在野外带来好处。)”以及“If the workers can flexibly find new ways to get food for the colony, that’s the skill that they need to have.(如果工蜂能灵活地为蜂群找到新的获取食物的方法,那就是它们需要具备的技能。)” D Nearly half of Americans and around 40% of Britons now use smartwatches, smart rings, or phone apps to track their sleep. B 33. A 34. B 35. 根据第一段“Using data from roughly 500,000 people, researchers discovered that those who slept between 6.4 and 7.8 hours per night showed slower ageing than those who slept either more or less.(研究人员利用大约50万人的数据发现,每晚睡眠在6.4到7.8小时之间的人,其衰老速度比睡眠时间更长或更短的人都更慢。)” 根据第三段“Wearables match polysomnography on sleep-stage classification only 50-80% of the time.(可穿戴设备在睡眠阶段分类上与多导睡眠监测的吻合度只有50%到80%。)” 根据最后一段“There is a simpler alternative: whether you wake up feeling rested is the best indicator of how good your night actually was.(有一个更简单的替代方法:你醒来时是否感觉休息好了,才是衡量你夜晚睡眠实际质量的最佳指标。)” 根据第一段“But are these devices accurate? And do they actually help?(但是这些设备准确吗? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: Grandfather’s words stayed in my mind as I studied the pieces once more. I calmed down and abandoned my previous impulsive way of forcing pieces to fit. Instead of sticking to my fixed grouping method, I took my time to observe the tiny differences in shape and pattern among those similar pieces. Whenever I met tricky parts, I chose to set them aside temporarily and move on to easier ones. Gradually, more parts of the puzzle fell into place. The outline of the lighthouse stood out vividly, and the messy pile of pieces turned into an orderly and beautiful sea scene. Paragraph 2: Grandfather nodded with satisfaction as I placed the final piece into its spot. The whole delicate picture was perfectly completed, bathing in warm evening light. A sense of accomplishment and joy welled up in my heart. I finally understood grandfather’s words. True patience means not keeping stubbornly to wrong methods, but adjusting wisely and waiting patiently. This puzzle taught me a valuable life lesson: never force things blindly. Only with calmness and flexibility can we overcome difficulties and achieve success. 词汇激活 行为类 ①坚持:stick to/insist on ②把……转变成:……turn…into… 情绪类 ①快乐:joy/delight ②成就:accomplishment/achievement 【点睛】[高分句型1] Instead of sticking to my fixed grouping method, I took my time to observe the tiny differences in shape and pattern among those similar pieces.(运用了动名词短语作宾语) [高分句型2] Only with calmness and flexibility can we overcome difficulties and achieve success.(运用了部分倒装结构) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $2026学年第一学期高三年级十月联考英语听力材料朗读现在开始,该部分共有两节,请注意做题时先将答案标在试卷上,该部分录音内容结束后,你将有两分钟的时间将试卷上的答案转涂到答题卡上。 Text one, look at this photo of us cutting the cake.
