Sleep for humans almost always means there is a bed or a mat near here. Animals, however, have many different ways of sleeping.
For warmth, some animals sleep in groups, such as lions, monkeys, penguins and so on. Elephants also sleep in a group, but they sleep in groups for protection. The larger elephants make a circle around the younger elephants. The larger elephants sleep standing up, while the younger ones lie down to sleep.
Some animals sleep in trees. Birds will lock their feet onto a branch to keep from falling out of the tree. Other animals, like squirrels, make nests (筑巢) in the trees to sleep in.
Most animals look for dry places to sleep. However, ducks often sleep in water. So do sea otters. They hold hands when they sleep in groups to keep from floating away.
Most animals lie down to sleep. However, some large animals, like horses, can sleep standing up. The flamingo sleeps standing on just one leg.
Most animals sleep at night, but some animals are nocturnal. Nocturnal animals sleep during the day. Bats and owls are nocturnal animals. They wake up when the sun goes down!

Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman, a book by Richard P. Feynman, was a very interesting read. Feynman shares his thoughts on life in an easy and honest way through many fun stories.
Feynman loved learning new things so much. He always wanted to know more. You may think a great scientist only cares about science, right? But Feynman liked asking questions and wanted to learn about everything. He showed an interest in painting and even held his own art show. He also joined a Brazilian bongo band (巴西邦戈乐队) and played with its members. The list goes on and on! This made me think: We should be passionate about our work, but we should also try new hobbies.
I learned another lesson from Feynman’s science studies. That is to never just trust someone else’s data (数据). Every time he did a science test, he would check the numbers himself, even if (即便) others had shared them elsewhere. We often need to learn from the work of others. When their results are wrong, however, we will be misled (误导). So, we should never believe any information without thinking.
Feynman, I think, was a true scientist and a lover of life. He is no longer with us, but his work will still help many people.
1.Which hobby of Feynman’s is mentioned (提及) in the passage?

A.Feynman cared about science and had no other hobbies.
B.The writer thinks people should not spend time on new hobbies.
C.People can get great ideas about work and life by reading this book.
D.We can trust the data if others have shared it elsewhere.
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.An Interesting Book About Science
B.Richard Feynman: A Scientist Who Loved Life
C.Richard Feynman’s Hobbies
D.How to Be Like Feynman
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 4.B

Do you have a sleeping problem? Then you may need to see more sunlight, especially in the morning, a new study says.
A team of researchers (研究人员) from New York, US did the study, reported Yahoo news. The team did a study on 109 office workers across the US. They found that some of the workers saw lots of light during the morning hours, between 8 am and lunchtime. They found that they had a better sleep than others. They also fell asleep more quickly at night.
Why is sunlight so important to your sleep? Researchers say it helps set your “body clock”. When there is less and less sunlight at the close of the day, your body starts to make melatonin (褪黑素). It makes you feel sleepy. Your body makes the most melatonin at night. During the day, sunlight tells your body to make less melatonin, which keeps you awake.
Researchers suggest we see 15 minutes of sunlight in the morning. It can help balance (平衡) the melatonin in our body.

How can you remember a song for a long time? Why does your teacher use songs to teach you English? There is a reason (原因) for this.
Scientists are studying something between music and remembering a foreign (外国的) language, like English. “Singing could be a new way of learning, especially for learning a foreign language. If children find it difficult to learn foreign languages, this new way may help. On her blog, Dr Ludke wrote, “A listen-and-repeat (重复) singing way can help to learn foreign languages and open the door for future study in this area.”

Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington D.C., likes using songs in teaching Chinese. She said, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids, we usually use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics (歌词). It works, and it is fun for children.” “Sometimes I think if I had learnt English that way when I was young, maybe I could speak English much better,” Hua Zhuying said.

A.Writing science books. B.Painting and playing music.

B.The writer thinks people should not spend time on new hobbies.
C.People can get great ideas about work and life by reading this book.
D.We can trust the data if others have shared it elsewhere.
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.An Interesting Book About Science
B.Richard Feynman: A Scientist Who Loved Life
C.Richard Feynman’s Hobbies
D.How to Be Like Feynman

When making sandwiches, they put 2 pieces of bread on the plate and see that vegetables stay fresh (新鲜的) longer if they’re not cut too early, they learn science.
Cooking classes show students that they can learn from the mistakes. Li Mei learned this when she cooked her first cake badly in class. Her teacher said, “Don’t worry. Mistakes help us learn.” They talked about it together and found the mistakes. Then Li Mei cooked a cake again carefully. Her new cake came out perfect!

How can you remember a song for a long time? Why does your teacher use songs to teach you English? There is a reason (原因) for this.
Scientists are studying something between music and remembering a foreign (外国的) language, like English. “Singing could be a new way of learning, especially for learning a foreign language. The brain (大脑) likes to remember things in a catchy and relaxing way. For example, children can remember difficult words quickly when they are in a song,” said Dr Karen Ludke. If children find it difficult to learn foreign languages, this new way may help. On her blog, Dr Ludke wrote, “A listen-and-repeat (重复) singing way can help to learn foreign languages and open the door for future study in this area.”
Many language teachers know the importance of music and often use it in teaching and learning.
Our brain likes music in learning languages, especially for remembering. If you are still having problems in learning a language, why not try singing it out?

At school, students usually learn different subjects in the classroom. But these days, they are becoming more interested in a new subject—school gardening. Students learn it outside the classroom in the fresh air!
But some teachers are finding good ways to make it work. The school garden may be very small, but even a small garden can bring students great fun. First, teachers tell the students what vegetables to grow (生长,种植)—like tomatoes, carrots, or green beans. Then, they work together. It’s great to watch the young plants grow day by day. Picking a fresh tomato and eating it in the garden is a special joy. That’s why many students say gardening is their favourite activity.
Gardening teaches students a lot. Some vegetables grow fast, but others need a long time. This can teach students patience. They learn to wait and watch their plants grow slowly. Gardening also teaches students life skills. In the garden, kids learn how to work as a team.
