Another problem is that quick access (to information makes us believe it is always in our heads
In the past,we had to work hard to get knowledge. We knew what knowledge lay in other brains or books,
and what lay in our heads. But easy access today gives us an erroneous idea-the knowledge we find is
part of what we have known all along.
Dependency on a network also increases the possibility of being harmed. If the things we depend on
stop working,we will be in trouble.Imagine this:if the systems we depend on for health, like food and
energy, stop working,it will cause serious problems.Without food we get hungry, without energy we feel
cold. The greatest danger to a civilization is that if it loses its memory,it could enter a dark age.
We leave old skills behind to learn new ones.As long as knowledge remains stored in our networks
and can be found,it may not be truly lost.Yet over time,we might become strangers to future people.

Another problem is that quick access()to information makes us believe it is always in our heads.
In the past,we had to work hard to get knowledge. We knew what knowledge lay in other brains or books.
and what lay in our heads. But easy access today gives us an erroneous idea-the knowledge we find is
part of what we have known all along.
Dependency on a network also increases the possibility of being harmed. If the things we depend on
stop working.we will be in trouble.Imagine this:if the systems we depend on for health, like food and
energy, stop working,it will cause serious problems.Without food we get hungry;without energy we feel
cold. The greatest danger to a civilization is that if it loses its memory.it could enter a dark age.
We leave old skills behind to learn new ones.As long as knowledge remains stored in our networks
and can be found,it may not be truly lost.Yet over time,we might become strangers to future people

In 2018, Science magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach. Most said students should spend less time remembering facts and have more space for creative activities.
This idea seems reasonable today. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can get knowledge easily. Besides, civilizations develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter?
▲ For one, human beings have biases(偏见), and smart machines may increase them. Many people believe smart machines are objective(客观的) , but they are trained through repeated testing and scoring. In this process, humans still decide the correct answers.
** 九年级英语科期中检测题(A) (共8页) 第5页**
Another problem is that quick access(访问) to information makes us believe it is always in our heads. In the past, we had to work hard to get knowledge. We knew what knowledge lay in other brains or books, and what lay in our heads. But easy access today gives us an erroneous idea — the knowledge we find is part of what we have known all along.
Dependency on a network also increases the possibility of being harmed. If the things we depend on stop working, we will be in trouble. Imagine this: if the systems we depend on for health, like food and energy, stop working, it will cause serious problems. Without food we get hungry; without energy we feel cold. The greatest danger to a civilization is that if it loses its memory, it could enter a dark age.
We leave old skills behind to learn new ones. As long as knowledge remains stored in our networks and can be found, it may not be truly lost. Yet over time, we might become strangers to future people.
56. What did most young scientists suggest in Science magazine?

There used to be many poor villages in Nanxiong City of northern Guangdong Province. Take a small village in Wujing Town as an example. Several years ago, villagers there mainly grew tobacco(烟草) in a traditional way. The old tobacco drying rooms were inefficient and produced lowquality products. People could hardly make enough money to support their families. Many young people had to leave their hometown and find jobs in big cities. As a result, many children and old people stayed at home alone. The village's annual income(年收入) was only about 20,000 yuan in 2020.
Then, great changes took place. In 2022, with the support of the
government, new technology was introduced. Fifty modern tobacco drying
rooms were built. These new rooms run on electricity and green biological
materials. They work more efficiently and make tobacco taste much better. At the same time, they help cut down production costs for the villagers.
** 九年级英语科期中检测题(A) (共8页) 第7页**
In 2024, solar panels(太阳能电池板) were put on the roofs of these drying rooms. This created a “generate(产生) electricity above, dry tobacco below” model. The solar power station produces over 800,000 kilowatthours of electricity every year.
Thanks to this “tobacco+solar” model, the village has changed completely. The village's annual income has increased a lot. Many young people have returned to work in their hometown. They can now work near their families and take good care of them. The villagers have moved into new houses and live much better lives. Their living conditions have improved greatly in recent years.
76. What were the old tobacco drying rooms like?
77. What was the annual income of the village in 2020?

79. When were the solar panels put on the roofs of the drying rooms?

My grandma is 68 years old. This spring, she started forgetting little things, like where she put her glasses. She felt really worried and decided to do something. She developed the habit of doing simple memory exercises after breakfast. She usually spent about thirty minutes playing card‑matching games or recalling words and poems. At first, it was challenging, but she didn’t give up. After a week, my grandpa joined her, and they turned it into something fun together. Little by little, Grandma found herself less forgetful. Now, she even runs a small memory‑sharing group at the community centre. Every weekend, the group members share old songs and family stories happily. Grandma says she feels more connected to her past and to others.
