二、完形填空(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
More and more schools are using personality tests to help students understand themselves better. Some people believe these tests are useful tools, 1___ others worry that they may do more harm than good.
Those in favour of personality tests say they help students discover their strengths and weaknesses. For example, a student who learns that they are creative might feel more 2___ about choosing art-related subjects. A student who finds they are organized may 3___ becoming a project manager in the future. Knowing your personality type can guide you to choose a job that truly 4___ you.
However, there are several problems. First, most personality tests are not 100% correct. A student might get different results on different days, 5___ on their mood. Second, knowing your “type” might limit your choices. If a test tells you that you are “not 6___,” you might never try painting or writing, 7___ you could actually be good at them. A famous educator once said, “Don’t let a test tell you who you are — go out and discover it yourself.”
In my opinion, personality tests can be helpful — but only if we use them wisely. They should be seen as a starting point for self-reflection, not as a(an) 8___ answer. The most important thing is to keep an open mind. Our personalities are not 9___; they can grow and change as we experience new things. As the saying goes, “Knowing 10___ is the beginning of all wisdom.” But wisdom also means understanding that you are always a work in progress.

Frank: Secret guitar? That’s cool, Alice! But maybe they are hurt because you hid it from them.

On July 23, 2026, Chinese mathematicians (数学家) Wang Hong received the Fields Medal, which is known as the “Nobel Prize” in math. This is the first time a Chinese national has received this honor.
Born in 1991 in Guilin, Guangxi, Wang Hong’s love for math began with a puzzle: “There are seven points on a plane (平面). If any three points form a line, how many lines can you draw at most?”
In schools, Wang would study new textbooks by herself. “I was used to asking myself questions and finding answers on my own,” she once said.
In 2007, Wang got into Peking University but missed the math program by a few points and ended up in the School of Earth and Space Sciences. After studying two majors (专业) during her first year, Wang transferred (转入) to math. But college-level math was tough, and most of Wang's classmates, unlike her, had training in mathematics olympiads (奥数竞赛). Wang started to doubt herself. “I felt like I was always struggling (挣扎),” she told China Science Daily.
Later, Wang tried other things, like architecture. But this only made her return to math. Now, Wang is a professor at New York University and the Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies in France.
Winning the Fields Medal has made Wang famous. But Wang credits (归功) her success to teamwork and luck. “What I’ve learned is that as long as you reach your goal, it doesn’t matter how long it takes. Others might be quicker, and you might take your time, but that's perfectly fine,” she said.
4. What can we learn about studying math from Wang Hong's early experience?
A. We need to try our best to win Fields Medal, the “Nobel Prize” in math.
B. We must think of the puzzle about points on a plane.
C. If we don't have training in mathematics olympiads, we will not succeed.
D. Puzzles get us interested, and we can ask and answer questions by ourselves.
5. What happened to Wang Hong when she entered Peking University?
A. She began to major in math program as soon as she entered Peking University.
B. She didn't get enough points to major in math program.
C. She had training in mathematics olympiads.
D. She doubted herself because she didn't do well in Earth and Space Sciences.
6. What does Wang Hong's words in the last paragraph mean?
A. All the slow people can succeed.
B. Success is about being the fastest.
C. If others are quicker, you should take your time.
D. Sticking to the goal is more important than speed.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Wang Hong according to her experience?
A. Unlucky and negative
B. Talented but proud
C. Hard-working and strong-willed
D. Quick-minded and humorous

For a long time, sheep have been the main animals used for grazing (放牧) in the UK. However, a new study found that cattle (牛) instead of sheep can increase butterfly numbers. How did cattle suddenly become a “savior” for the butterflies?
The study turned a 1,200-hectare site from sheep grazing to cattle grazing. After 18 years, the site had 4.9 times more butterflies than before. Sheep use their narrow jaws (下巴) to pick out certain plants they prefer, often biting away the wildflowers that butterflies depend on. Cattle, on the other hand, wrap (裹) their tongues around taller plants and pull them out. This helps clear areas of grass, giving wildflowers more room and light to grow. A volunteer project has also shown that cattle play an important role in butterfly protection in the UK, but in a different way.
The high brown fritillary butterfly (灿福蛱蝶) is one of the rarest British butterflies. “They are the pickiest (最挑剔的),” Paul Dunn, who started the project to help this kind of butterfly grow again, told the BBC. For three years, Dunn and other volunteers have encouraged locals to graze cows in the areas where the butterflies live in the Alun Valley. Surprisingly, the number of the butterflies is now on the rise.
This is because when cattle walk on bracken (蕨类植物), they create uneven (不平整的) ground. These bumpy areas form small, warm spots where caterpillars (毛毛虫) can grow well.
What's more, cattle help control the amount of bracken, preventing it from overgrowing. Too much bracken can make it difficult for the caterpillars' important food, the dog violet, to grow.
8. What might the underlined word “savior” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Helper. B. Owner. C. Neighbour. D. Stranger.
9. Which animal's eating habit helps butterflies according to Paragraph 2?
A.牛 B.羊 C.牛 D.羊
10. Which is a reason for the increase in the number of butterflies in the Alun Valley?
A. Cattle make the ground proper for caterpillars to grow.
B. Cattle help bracken grow better.
C. Cattle wrap their tongues around taller plants and pull them out.
D. Cattle make bracken, caterpillars' important food, grow better.
11. What is the writer's attitude towards using cattle to help butterflies?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Uninterested. D. Worried.
D
Now picture this: You are spending two weeks in a foreign country helping local kids with Chinese in the morning and sunbathing on a beach in the afternoon. That's exactly what voluntourism is all about.
“Voluntourism” is a blend (混合) of “volunteering” and “tourism”. It means doing volunteer work in the place where one is vacationing.
Voluntourism has many advantages. For local communities, volunteers bring them energy, skills and kindness. They build houses, clean the environment, provide medical care, and so on. For voluntourists, they get free meals and housing when volunteering. Also, it's a great way to learn about other cultures while making a positive change.
But there are problems too. First, some people say short-term voluntourism does not create lasting change. Building a house in one week might not be as helpful as training local workers. Another problem is that sometimes volunteers take away jobs and income (收入) from the locals. Also, some projects are not well planned. As a result, they may fail to meet what they expect, and even do harm to both voluntourists and local communities.
So, what should you do if you want to be a good voluntourist? First, research carefully. Choose a responsible (负责的) organization that listens to local people. Then, think about what skills you have to help those in need. Besides, consider the value of what you do: Does it meet the community's needs? Is it sustainable (可持续的)? When asking yourself these questions, always remember: Helping isn't just about you feeling good — it's about doing real good.
Voluntourism could be a wonderful experience if done right. However, if it is done wrong, things will be different. The key is to make decisions that will leave the world better than it was when you started.
12. Which of the following best describes “voluntourism”?
A. Travelers study in another place.
B. Volunteers use their skills to help others.
C. Tourists make money in another city.
D. Tourists volunteer while on a trip.
13. What might be a problem of short-term voluntourism according to Paragraph 3?
A. A shortage of workers. B. A waste of money.
C. Useless houses. D. No lasting change.
14. What should you do to be a good voluntourist?
① Consider what local people really need.
② Take every chance to volunteer.
③ Pay more attention to your own feeling.
④ Think about your skills.
⑤ Consider the value of your act.
A. ①②③ B. ①④⑤ C. ②④⑤ D. ②③④
15. Choose the best title for this passage ______.
A. Voluntourism: Make Money by Traveling
B. Voluntourism: Helpful or Harmful
C. Advantages of Being a Volunteer
D. Why Local Communities Need Help

Labor education is becoming important in China's educational system. Primary and middle schools now include it as a must-learn subject. China pushes for labor education in schools because they want students to learn a wide range of skills, including practical skills, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, so that students can use their brains and hands to help society in the future.
Western countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, have historically focused more on academic (学术) achievement. However, there is a growing trend (趋势) towards including labor education in school subjects. For example, the UK is increasingly including labor education as part of character education in its schools.
Labor education plays an important role in promoting social harmony (和谐) and community building in China. By taking part in community service projects and other activities, students learn to work together and help people in need. This helps them develop a sense of social responsibility (责任感). Labor education also promotes (促进) understanding between the city and countryside by teaching students practical skills such as farming and housework, which helps them better understand villages' challenges and needs. It is important for their personal growth and the development of society.
As China improves its labor education program, it is expected to have a positive impact on the country's workforce (劳动力) and society. By including labor education in schools, the country is taking a step towards creating a more skilled and responsible generation.
