When her daughter got married in 2009,Anne Reeder searched everywhere for
the right hat."I needed one to match my dress, but there were hardly any suitable hats
for me,"she says."I had to go for a straw one at last and probably looked a bit silly.

Reeder attended weekend classes to learn millinery, the art of hat making."I've
always loved drawing and sewing and I could always do with more hats to round off
my clothes,"she says."Millinery seemed like the perfect combination of my
interests."
The experience of making something reminded Reeder of her early passion.
When she was young, she wanted to go to art school. However,Reeder's desire
clashed with her father's vision for her career. Her father wanted her to have a career
that could support herself. He didn't think an art school education was suitable.
"Making hats decades later released that creativity and allowed me to start
again,"Reeder says.
Once retired in 2014,Reeder signed up for an intensive hat-making BTEC
qualification at Kensington and Chelsea College.Once a week, she would travel to
London and begin the complicated process of making hand-crafted pieces."We
learned everything from finding inspiration to drawing and making 3D models on
paper.I can lose myself in it,put the radio on and get going,"she says.
Reeder,77,now has a hat-making workshop in her home."It has really refreshed
my interest in fashion and fabric(),"she says."I went to India a few years ago
and bought lots of offcuts(边料)to make headbands(头带),and I also recycle old
dresses into hats.I'm thinking of making a whole collection out of secondhand fabrics
next."She is still eager to learn new techniques."I'll keep going as long as I can, since
people always need something interesting to wear."

Fresh peas often take so long to reach grocery stores that they usually lose their
original flavor when you eat them.Frozen peas, which are frozen within hours of
being picked, keep their sweetness and crispness(),not to mention their bright
color.
While people in cold climates have been preserving food by freezing for longer
than we probably can record,in the early 20th century, processed food companies had
a lot to learn when it came to making defrosted()fish and other food stuffs
delicious..Frozen food always took on a depressingly mushy(糊状的)texture(质地)】
The idea of making food eatable for the future by freezing had been appealing
for quite some time.Sir Francis Bacon conducted a food-freezing experiment in 1626.
He noticed food could be stored longer in winter,so he had a chicken's body stuffed
with snow to see if it would be well preserved. His death soon after stopped him from
continuing the experiment.
A turning point in the frozen food industry's history came when Clarence
Birdseye,a naturalist, lived in Labrador. There he learned about the customs of the
Inuit, who would go ice fishing and then let their catch immediately freeze in the very
第9页(共14页)
cold air. When this frozen fish, which was left out in the cold, was eventually cooked,
it tasted fresh and delicious. He applied the same method to cabbages, and it worked
wonderfully
However, frozen food didn't find its feet then.Large numbers of Americans first
tasted frozen food in the 1940s,during World War II,when there was a shortage of
canned goods.Even more significant was the fact that while men were off fighting,
women took jobs outside the home, causing them to seek faster ways to fix meals.
It took trial and error to discover the foods that froze well and to improve
refrigeration in transportation systems,in stores, and in people's homes.

第10页(共14页)
65.What can we infer from the passage?

From now on,never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your
failures and shortcomings.Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted
within you when you were born.Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.
The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome
machine ever created:the human mind.Success is a choice and not a chance.You
were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be successful if only you make the
right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem().Your
level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to
exercise over yourself, and thus over your life.People with low self-esteem are people
who do not believe that they have any power or responsibility for their lives. They are
the perennial(victims and martyrs. They are leaves tossed by the winds of
chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that
you are responsible for everything that happens in your life.Failures think that
everything happens by accident and chance.Successful people realize that they are
responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause,we
can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe.
One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our
expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.
If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to
第11页(共14页)
achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding,
planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks
In short,in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional,
or spiritual, you are responsible.Once you recognize this, accept it,and firmly believe
it,you are on the road to success.
66.People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they
A.can't exercise control over themselves
B.don't have the power to live like the wind
C.are easily affected by windy weather
D.are ready to change their minds
67.What is the common thought of failures according to the passage?
A.Success is the result of hard work.
B.They are responsible people.
C.The failure is only because of bad luck.
D.Making efforts leads to a good future.
68.According to Paragraph 5,what can we do if we identify the cause of something?
A.We can avoid taking any responsibility for it.
B.We can determine the consequences that follow.
C.We can go back and change what has happened.
D.We can accurately predict every future event.

being a teacher was my ambition.

However, things didn't go the way I expected.I could not take science subjects
because they were not offered at my high school. At first I was very disappointed and
depressed.I thought that my dreams had been shattered once again, but a little while
later,I realized that this was a blessing:I had been given a chance to explore my
options a little further than that.
As I completed high school and was preparing to go to college,my greatest
attention was focused on accounting.Naturally, the subject becomes my best subject
now at college. Now I am an accounting major but I wish to declare finance a major
as well.
I value the importance of business in society very much.I want to be a financial
advisor in the future. To make my dream come true, now I am studying hard to gain
more knowledge about finance.
While I wish to achieve this,I agree that there is room for me to explore other
opportunities, too. Our ambitions always change with new circumstances, new
environments and as we get to know how big the world really is.

Dear Jim,I am writing to tell you something that is related to the club activity with the
theme of"Green Tianjin".The following are my suggestions.First of all,it is suitable
to organize a walking tour around the city to explore the green places in Tianjin while
promoting eco-friendly transportation,Additionally, why not set out to plant trees to
not only beautify the city but also purify the air?Last but not least, without joint
efforts,a green Tianjin wouldn't be built, and as consequence,I lay stress on the
cooperation between local volunteers and local environmental organizations.
All in all,as long as you take the above suggestions into account, you can succeed in
organizing this activity,so don't be stressed out.I am looking forward to participating
in this event and strengthening environmental awareness together.
Yours,Li Hua
