My life experience is anything but ordinary.Raised by my hardworking single mother on
Australia's Gold Coast,I was encouraged to pursue higher education.Though I excelled
academically,my passion was cooking,a path my mother hesitated to support due to its
challenges.To please her,I enrolled in university while working part-time as a chef.However,
my love for the kitchen soon overshadowed my studies, and I dropped out to pursue cooking
full-time.
Over the next 12 years,I climbed the ranks as a chef, landing head chef positions in North
Queensland.Life seemed perfect-I was engaged, had great friends and enjoyed stability.Yet,
a lingering restlessness grew within me.A trip to Bali became a turning point.I realized I
craved something beyond routine existence.Despite guilt,I walked away from my settled life,
returning to my mother's home on the Gold Coast.
Soon,I fell back into old patterns-working in kitchens and feeling unfulfilled. Then,
Instagram changed everything. As an early user,I poured my creativity into the platform,
discovering a talent for photography and storytelling.By 2012,my audience grew to 200,000
followers, and tourism boards began reaching out.Recognizing the opportunity,I quit my job
to pursue travel photography and social media full-time.
The early days were tough.I created a"solo influencer package",offering brands social
media content, photography and campaign reports. As a pioneer in Australia's influencer
market,my services became highly sought-after.I traveled relentlessly-50 trips a year at my
peak-while expanding into consulting,public speaking,and project management
Now,I run a multifaceted business,blending photography,social media,and travel.I
co-founded the Travel Bootcamp, teaching others to build careers in the industry, and launched
an online photography course for beginners.Next year,I'll lead my first photography tour,
combining my passions with conservation and community support.
My journey has been challenging yet deeply fulfilling.Money is no longer the main
driver-instead,I seek meaningful experiences and opportunities to inspire others. What began
as a small idea has grown into a life of adventure, creativity, and purpose.

Tomatoes and fries make a tasty pair. But the connection between tomatoes and potatoes
may go beyond making a good meal.Potatoes today might have evolved with the help of an
early tomato, according to a new paper published in a leading scientific journal recently.
A team of scientists analyzed the genomes (of wild potatoes, tomatoes, and their
ancestors. They found that each potato species contains a mix of genetics from tomatoes and a
potato-like ancestor, suggesting the modem potato resulted from an event between the two.
"This is one of the largest genomic collections of wild potatoes ever analyzed,"says Zhiyang
Zhang,a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the lead author of the
study.
Scientists already knew that tomatoes and potatoes were related to some degree-both
belong to the Solanum (group, after all, along with the eggplant. And potatoes and
tomatoes are each other's closest living relatives. So,they took a closet look at their genes.
Zhang and his team found that wild tomato plants interbred with a potato-like plant genes
called Etuberosum(无块茎茄属)around nine million years ago.Alone, neither plant had the
genes to make these underground parts-but together, they could grow the feature.
That event, the authors suggest;occurred in the Andes Mountains. The underground parts
allowed the potato to survive in this unforgiving habitat and spread across the world. They
enabled plants to reproduce without seeds making them adaptable."Evolving these
underground parts gave potatoes a huge advantage in hard envirenments, fueling an explosion
of new species,"says Sanwen Huang,a genome researcher at the Chinese Academy of
Agricultural Sciences and the study's senior author,in a statement.Zhang's team hopes that
understanding the potato's evolution can help scientists develop innovative ways to breed the
species and make the food stronger today.Zhang is already looking into ways potatoes might
be grown from seeds.Seed potatoes could be more genetically diverse and resistant to various
risks, such as drought. The work also demonstrates how different species can be unexpectedly
connected by evolution."Next time you eat potatoes,"Huang adds,"thank a tomato."

A few years ago trainers were the footwear in fashion.Today the queues outside trainer
stores are shorter and less frequent.Styles of trainers that once sold for more than four times
their original price are being offered at a discount. Are customers running away from trainers?
"Sneaker culture is dead,"an influencer complained."Sneakerheads"who trade in trainers
worry that the Sneaker collecting market, valued at around S6 billion,is declining.Online
marketplaces in France and the Netherlands have recently gone out of business.Sneakersnstuff,
a European retailer, filed for bankruptcy in January 2025,citing"a global decline in the limited
-edition sneakers market".
The end of"the crazy pursuit of sneakers"is not the only reason why sneakers seem less
trendy. In the past, brands restricted supply by using limited-edition releases to create
excitement about specific collections. But recently they have pumped out lots of products,
even restocking once-rare styles prized by collectors, says Dylan Dittrich, author of
Sneakonomic(球摧收藏经诩Growth,a book about sneaker collecting.Although this strategy
can boost sales,it lowers demand and pushes prices down.Counterfeits()have also
advanced in leaps and bounds.On Reddit,a social-media site,shoppers praise the high-quality
sneaker replicas or fakes. But there is another, simpler reason why sneakers have slipped:
changing fashions. Some styles are out of date.Pairs that are in fashion right now are better
suited to athletics than auction houses(拍卖行),
Sneaker enthusiasts are being lured by other forms of footwear, such as boots, loafers(
and ballet flats.Sportswear firms are trying to cater to changing tastes.New Balance and
Hoka have released loafers, and Adidas has created sneaker versions of Mary Jane shoes.
Meanwhile, sneaker collectors are seeking only what others do not have.In a sportswear
auction at Sotheby's,the world's largest auction house, many Nike shoes sold for below their
estimated value. The priciest pair, fetching S190,500,was worn and signed by Kobe Bryant,a
basketball player who died in 2020.These days,Dittrich observes,"It takes a special sneaker to
produce a special price."

When I was 22 years old,I applied for a college course. The receptionist was surprised by
the blank space under "educational history"on my application form.
I grew up in a Gypsy()family in the UK,and formal education was not part of daily
life.Instead of sitting in classrooms,we learned from family, nature and experience.
Though I never attended school,I loved books.Through reading,I discovered history,
science, literature and places far beyond my own world.
As I grew older,I realized many people misunderstood Gypsy families, thinking we didn't
want to learn or contribute to society.Others judged us simply because we lived differently.
When I worked and traveled abroad,I often hid my background, fearing judgement.
Eventually,I decided it was time to challenge myself, getting out of my usual groove. The
first months of college were difficult. Many classmates already knew things I had never learned.
There were moments when I doubted myself, but I refused to give up.Step by step,I gained
confidence.I completed the course with excellent results and later continued my studies at
university.
Living in a city sometimes feels strange after spending my childhood surrounded by fields,
forests and open skies. But I have never forgotten where my life and culture root.

W:Would you take a trip if you could not use your cellphone during it?A new travel company is asking its
customers to do that. The company is called Off the Grid.14Zach Beattie is its founder.12The company's
first trip was to Barcelona,Spain,in July.It is also planning trips to Lisbon,Portugal and Tulum,Mexico.
1The 7-to 10-day tours are for small groups,no more than 16 people.Trip prices begin at S1,500.The
cost includes stays in hotels, some meals and ground transportation. It does not include airfares.Travelers are
permitted to bring cameras to take photographs. But the company also employs a photographer to take lots of
pictures during the tour.14Beattie started the business with the money he saved from a design job at a
mapping company. He employs guides to lead each trip. But he will help lead the first few tours himself.
Kensey Neely is 30 years old, from Missouri. She plans to go on the Lisbon trip. She has been"trying to
find a way to step out of her comfort zone".15Neely doesn't think it will be easy to give up her phone, but
she says,"I believe once I do it during the trip,I won't be as tied to my phone when I get back."
M:6You look great, sweetie.I think you're ready for your first day of work.Just remember to be
confident when you introduce yourself.
W:OK.And I'll try to wear a smile often.I don't want to give my co-workers a bad impression.Well,I've takena
notebook and my laptop. Is there anything else I should take?
M:6You should take the lunch box.Your mom has prepared lunch for you today.
W:Alright.I must go now,or I'll be late.8Have you seen my car key?
M:It's on the table.
