When I was a kid, I was the girl who kept the training wheels on my bike as long as possible. Even my younger sister had got rid of them much earlier than me. But as I began to grow older, this changed.
All this happened on the Bike Safety Day. It is supposed to be (应该是) a fun day at school when all of us kids bring our bikes to school and the school provides us with the opportunity to ride outside and learn proper bike safety. Sounds like fun, right? No. In fact, it caused me to panic. What was I going to say when my friends asked me about my training wheels?
With the pressure of everyone seeing my training wheels, I determined to let them go. This was the first big change I’d ever made on my own.
I went to my parents and told them all about my dilemma (困境). They were more than happy to help. We went outside and got my bike. Instead of running away and hiding behind, I stood in front of my bike and took great pride in my decision as my dad removed the training wheels.
I got on and steadied myself. My heart raced but my feet and hands were calm. My dad started to push before my feet even moved and suddenly I was off. The fear faded away and a relaxed mind came into its place. It was crazy to think how quickly I learned something that took so long for me to even try!
My confidence soared (高涨). This was going to be the start of a brand new world for me. My accomplishment would carry me forth to new goals and wins. I realized that if I set my mind on doing something, I could achieve it.
24. What does the school expect the students to do on Bike Safety Day?
A. Have their bikes checked. B. Ride outside for fun.
C. Acquire bike safety skills. D. Remove the training wheels.
25. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The author’s friends. B. The author’s parents.
C. The safety problems. D. The training wheels.
26. What happened when the author finally rode without the training wheels?
A. She felt extremely embarrassed. B. Everything turned out to be easy.
C. She ended up falling down. D. Her sisters followed her example.
27. What does the author think is necessary for her to achieve a goal?
A. Patience. B. Determination. C. Pressure. D. Concentration.
C
Social media (社交媒体) has its positive aspects, but it can also bring some problems.
Have you ever been bored and decided to check your We Chat moments, only to find out that your best friend is at the Great Wall or one of your classmates is eating delicious noodles at your favorite restaurant, or one of your basketball teammates is visiting the giant pandas in Sichuan? Have you had the feeling that others are enjoying life more than you are? If your answers are both “Yes”, you are experiencing FOMO — the fear of missing out.
Researchers have found that over 75% of young people are experiencing FOMO from time to time. Social media is the main culprit for it. Because it is so easy today for people to see what their friends are doing, eating, buying and talking about. And they are afraid of missing out on important and new information when they are away from social networks. However, it is impossible for us to enjoy the same activities others are enjoying on social media. Failing to realize this truth, we often let FOMO lead us to compare our lives with those of others. This comparison (比较) leaves us feeling dissatisfied. However, our lives have both good and bad moments, but all we see on social media are the picture-perfect moments others share. FOMO also makes us check social media more often, which can cause feelings of sadness, loneliness and boredom.
So what should we do if we have FOMO? Researchers advised that we face it and change our way of thinking. They also explained that taking part in social activities could help us realize that nothing bad was happening. What’s more, they suggested finding the joy in the present and not believing the unreal information or news on the Internet. “Take it as a chance to do what you really love, and turn your FOMO into your JOMO — joy of missing out.” one researcher said.
28. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 2?
A. To show what FOMO is with examples.
B. To find out if people suffer from FOMO.
C. To ask questions about people’s daily lives.
D. To give examples about people’s using social media.
29. Which one can replace (代替) the underlined word “culprit” in Paragraph 3?
A. goal B. reason C. result D. problem
30. According to paragraph 3, why does social media make people feel dissatisfied?
A. Because our lives have both good and bad moments.
B. Because it leads us to compare our lives with those of others.
C. Because it is impossible for us to make friends by social media.
D. Because we can see the picture-prefect moments.
31. According to the last paragraph, what are the right ways to deal with FOMO?
①Join a voluntary group.
②Accept what you are having now.
③Check your friends’ We Chat moments from time to time.
④Develop your hobbies.
⑤Stop believing the news on the Internet.
A. ③④⑤ B. ②③⑤ C. ①④⑤ D. ①②④

Students who plan to use AI tools to write their college application essays (文章) should think twice: Essays written by AI sound very similar to each other and lack personal voice, even when details (细节) like race or sex are included.
Researchers from the Cornell University compared 30,000 college application essays written by humans to ones written by eight AI tools. They discovered that AI essays were easy to tell from actual human writing because they used similar sentence patterns and repeated the same kinds of ideas.
“The application essay allows applicants to show who they are, beyond all the standard (标准的) information on the application form,” said Rene Kizilcec, senior author of the new study. “AI tools can help students improve their writing and are likely a good idea for weak writers. But asking for a full article will result in something that just does not sound like a real applicant.”
The researchers explained that AI models cannot easily copy a person’s natural writing style. This makes them unsuitable for important writing tasks like college applications. When AI tools were asked to write from the view of a specific (具体的) person, such as “an Asian woman from California”, the results sounded even less human. The essays often listed personal details in a boring and unimaginative way. Surprisingly, the team found that another AI program could easily tell the difference between human and AI-written essays. This means universities and colleges could likely find out essays written mainly by AI tools.
First author Jinsook Lee advises high school students to use their own ideas to brainstorm and write some simple essays, and, if allowed, use AI only to polish (润色) their essays. Applying to college can be stressful, but Lee actually enjoyed writing her own essays. “It was a great chance to look back on my life and my background (背景),” she said. “I think it was the first experience for me to be really thoughtful.”
32. What is a problem about AI-written essays?
A. They are short on personal style. B. They are always off-topic.
C. They use many uncommon words. D. They hardly give explanations in detail.
33. What does the paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the study?
A. Its aim. B. Its background. C. Its researchers. D. Its findings.
34. What does Lee advise high school students to do?
A. Think for themselves when writing.
B. Turn to AI models for help anytime.
C. Use AI models to organize essays firstly.
D. Avoid using AI tools for any writing.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Can AI Influence Students in College Application?
B. Should Students Use AI Tools for College Essays?
C. Do Colleges Accept AI-based Application Essays?
D. Will AI Change How College Students Write Essays?
