Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other. War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks. ” Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on. 4. What made Kate angry one evening? A. She couldn’t find her books. B. She heard the author shouting loud. C. She got the news that her grandma was ill. D. She saw the author’s shoes under her bed. 5. The author tidied up the room most probably because _________. A. she was scared by Kate’s anger B. she hated herself for being so messy C. she wanted to show her care D. she was asked by Kate to do so 6. How is Paragraph 1 mainly developed? A. By analyzing causes. B. By showing differences. C. By describing a process. D. By following time order. 7. What might be the best title for the story? A. My Friend Kate. B. Hard Work Pays Off. C. How to Be Organized. D. Learning to Be Roommates. D 5. C 6. B 7. 根据第二段中“Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!”(凯特走进房间。很快,我听到她尖叫道:“把你的鞋子拿走!为什么在我床底下!”)”可知,凯特生气是因为看到作者的鞋子放在了她的床底下。故选D。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was. something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.(从她谈话的语气中,我立刻知道她奶奶病得很重。挂断电话后,她迅速爬到被子下面,抽泣着。显然,这是她不应该独自经历的事情。突然,一股温暖的同情之情在我心中油然而生。)”以及第四段中“Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side.(慢慢地,我收拾好铅笔,把书拿回来,整理好床铺,清洗袜子,扫地,甚至扫到她那边。)” 根据第一段中“I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always, looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier.(我从来都不是很整洁,而我的室友凯特却非常有条理。她的每样东西都有它的位置,但我的总是藏在某个地方。她甚至给每样东西都贴上了标签。我总是寻找一切。随着时间的推移,凯特变得越来越整洁,而我却越来越邋遢。)”可知,第一段主要通过对比作者和凯特的不同来展开的。故选B。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.(凯特和我在这一年剩下的时间里一直是室友。我们并不总是意见一致,但我们学会了生活在一起的关键:让步、清理和坚持。)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者与室友生活习惯不同引发冲突,最终学会相处之道的故事。可知,D选项“Learning to Be Roommates(学会成为室友)”最符合文章标题。故选D。 C It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at ail. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar. And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t. In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I will admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I’m pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, Gorge Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austin Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven't read him, but haven’t lied about it either) and Herman Melville. Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they are speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth! But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J.K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing this story (I will come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so.). 8. How did the author find his friend a book liar? A. By judging his manner of speaking. B. By looking into his background. C. By mentioning a famous name. D. By discussing the book itself. 9. Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report? A. Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list. B. 42% of people pretended to have read 1984. C. The author admitted having read 9 books. D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read. 10. By lying about reading, a person hopes to ________. A. control the conversation B. appear knowledgeable C. learn about the book D. make more friends 11. What is the author’s attitude to 58% of readers? A. Favorable. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Friendly. D 9. B 10. B 11. 根据第一段“A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at ail. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar. 根据第二段“The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I will admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I’m pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, Gorge Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant. 根据第四段“Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they are speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth! (当被问及为什么撒谎的时候,最普遍的理由是想给正在说话的人留下深刻的印象。如果对话变得更加深入,这可能会很棘手!)”可知,人们之所以选择撒谎是想给对方留下一个好的印象。但却无法深入话题。故推知他们无法深入探讨书的内容,真正博学地讲述书里的内容,却想表现得很博学。故选B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J.K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing this story (I will come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so.). (但当被问及他们真正喜欢哪些作家时,人们的名字是J.K.罗琳、John Grisham、Sophie Kinsella(啊,换句话说是大畅销书作家)。百分之四十二的受访者承认,在读完这个故事之前,他们转向书的后面阅读了结尾。我会坦白:我会这样做。令人惊讶的是,58%的人说他们从未这样做过。)”可知,作者对58%的人说“他们从来没这么做过”表示吃惊,表明作者态度是astonished。故推知作者对其抱有不相信的,怀疑的态度,故选C。 D We’ve considered several ways of paying to cut in line: hiring line standers, buying tickets from scalpers (票贩子), or purchasing line cutting privileges directly from, say, an airline or an amusement park. Each of these deals replaces the morals of the queue (waiting your turn) with the morals of the market (paying a price for faster service). Markets and queues — paying and waiting — are two different ways of allocating things, and each is appropriate to different activities. The morals of the queue, “First come, first served,” have an egalitarian (平等主义的) appeal. They tell us to ignore privilege, power, and deep pockets. The principle seems right on play grounds and at bus stops. But the morals of the queue do not govern all occasions. If I put my house up for sale, I have no duty to accept the first offer that comes along, simply because it’s the first. Selling my house and waiting for a bus are different activities, properly governed by different standards. Sometimes standards change, and it is unclear which principle should apply. Think of the recorded message you hear, played over and over, as you wait on hold when calling your bank: “Your call will be answered in the order in which it was received.” This is essential for the morals of the queue. It’s as if the company is trying to ease our impatience with fairness. But don’t take the recorded message too seriously. Today, some people’s calls are answered faster than others. Call center technology enables companies to “score” incoming calls and to give faster service to those that come from rich places. You might call this telephonic queue jumping. Of course, markets and queues are not the only ways of allocating things. Some goods we allocate by merit, others by need, still others by chance. However, the tendency of markets to replace queues, and other non-market ways of allocating goods is so common in modern life that we scarcely notice it anymore. It is striking that most of the paid queue-jumping schemes we’ve considered — at airports and amusement parks, in call centers, doctors’ offices, and national parks — are recent developments, scarcely imaginable three decades ago. The disappearance of the queues in these places may seem an unusual concern, but these are not the only places that markets have entered. 12. According to the author which of the following seems governed by the principle “First come first served”? A. Taking buses. B. Buying houses. C. Flying with an airline. D. Visiting amusement parks. 13. The example of the recorded message in Paragraphs 4 and 5 illustrates ________. A. the necessity of patience in queuing B. the advantage of modern technology C. the uncertainty of allocation principle D. the fairness of telephonic services 14. What does the underlined word “allocating” mean? A. locating B. distributing C. collecting D. judging 15. The passage is meant to ________. A. justify paying for faster services B. discuss the morals of allocating things C. analyze the reason for standing in line D. criticize the behavior of queue jumping 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第二段中“The morals of the queue, “First come, first served,” have an egalitarian (平等主义的) appeal. They tell us to ignore privilege, power, and deep pockets.(排队遵循的“先到先得”准则带有平等主义的内涵,它告诉我们,不去顾及特权、权力和财富。)”、第三段中“The principle seems right on play grounds and at bus stops.(这个原则在操场和公交站似乎是合理的。)” 根据第四段中“Sometimes standards change, and it is unclear which principle should apply.(有时标准会改变,我们并不清楚该适用哪一条原则。)”以及第五段“But don’t take the recorded message too seriously. Today, some people’s calls are answered faster than others. Call center technology enables companies to “score” incoming calls and to give faster service to those that come from rich places. You might call this telephonic queue jumping.(但不必把这段提示音当真。如今,有些人的电话会优先接通。呼叫中心的技术可以让公司给来电“分级打分”,优先给来自富裕地区的客户提供更快服务,你可以把这称作电话里的插队。)”可知,电话录音的例子用来说明分配原则具有不确定性。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“Of course, markets and queues are not the only ways of allocating things. Some goods we allocate by merit, others by need, still others by chance.(当然,市场和排队并不是资源allocating仅有的两种方式。有些资源按能力allocating,有些按需求allocate,还有的靠运气。)”可知,市场和排队并不是分配资源的唯一方式。有些资源按价值择优分配,有些按需分配,还有一些靠随机机会分配。allocating表示“分配”,和distributing同义。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是根据第二段中“Markets and queues — paying and waiting — are two different ways of allocating things, and each is appropriate to different activities.(市场和排队——付费与等候——是两种不同的分配事物的方式,各自适用于不同的活动。)” Training for a marathon (马拉松) requires careful preparation and steady, gradual increases in the length of the runs. ___16___, buy the best-fitting running shoes you can find. No one can say which brand will work best for you or feel best on your feet, so you have to rely on your experience and on the feel of each pair as you shop. When you have found shoes that seem right, walk in them for a few days to double-check the fit. ___17___. As always, you should stretch (伸展) at least ten minutes before each run to prevent injuries. During the first week, do not think about distance, but run five minutes longer each day. ___18___, it is wise to take a day off to rest. But during the next week, set a goal of at least a mile and a half per run. ___19___. After two weeks, start timing yourself. ___20___. Depending on the kind of race you plan to enter, you can set up a timetable for the remaining weeks before the race. A. After six days B. For a good marathon runner C. Before you begin your training D. With each day, increase the distance by a half mile E. If they still feel good, you can begin running in them F. Time spent for preparation raises the quality of training G. Now you are ready to figure out a goal of improving distance and time 【答案】16. C 17. E 18. A 19. D 20. 根据空后buy the best-fitting running shoes you can find(买一双你能找到的最合适的跑鞋)可知,此处是为了跑马拉松进行的准备工作。 Before you begin your training(在你开始训练之前)符合文意。 When you have found shoes that seem right, walk in them for a few days to doublecheck the fit.(当你找到一双合适的鞋子,穿上几天再检查一下是否合脚)可知,E选项中they指的是前面提到的shoes,属于指代一致性,另外feel good与the fit有关。 If they still feel good, you can begin running in them(如果它们仍然感觉不错,你就可以穿着它们开始跑步了)符合文意。 During the first week, do not think about distance, but run five minutes longer each day.(在第一周,不要考虑距离,而是每天多跑5分钟。) 再根据空后it is wise to take a day off to rest(明智的做法是休息一天)可知,剩余的就是六天的时间。由此可知,A项After six days(六天后)符合文意。故选A. But during the next week, set a goal of at least a mile and a half per run.(但在接下来的一周,设定一个目标,每次跑步至少1.5英里)可知,此处指在距离上开始制定目标。 With each day, increase the distance by a half mile(每天增加半英里的距离)符合文意。 During the first week, do not think about distance, but run five minutes longer each day. But during the next week, set a goal of at least a mile and a half per run.(在第一周,不要考虑距离,而是每天多跑5分钟。 After two weeks, start timing yourself.(两周后开始计时)可知,此处提到了逐日增加跑步的时间和长度,两周后最自己开始计时。 Now you are ready to figure out a goal of improving distance and time.(现在,你准备好去制定一个提高距离和时间的目标)符合文意。 I went to a group activity, "Sensitivity Sunday", which was to make us more ___21___the problems faced by disabled people. C It happened to me recently. A. Favorable. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Friendly. D We’ve considered several ways of paying to cut in line: hiring line standers, buying tickets from scalpers (票贩子), or purchasing line cutting privileges directly from, say, an airline or an amusement park. A. justify paying for faster services B. discuss the morals of allocating things C. analyze the reason for standing in line D. criticize the behavior of queue jumping Training for a marathon (马拉松) requires careful preparation and steady, gradual increases in the length of the runs. ___16___, buy the best-fitting running shoes you can find.
