I enjoy the virtue I get from walking to the library to pick up my book. The space
devoted to holds(j预约图书)is almost as big as the rest of the shelves.now.They don't have
as many books out on the main bookshelves anymore. It feels like an orphanage for books
nobody wants to put a hold on.
I am certain the books I order gossip about me while waiting. The nonfiction looks
down on the popular novels, and the literary classics on everything else. They have plenty
of time.When I place a hold,I'm number 257 in line for 22 copies.This convinces me that
others want to read it,too.Since everything is done on the honor system now and there are
no overdue fines,I have to try really hard to get the little princesses read and returned.
The other day,I returned a book with nothing new to pick up,so I wandered the
shelves like in the old days.Anyway, there was a novel I hadn't read,by an author I admire!
I checked it out and sneaked away as though I'd found a diamond ring in a dark alley.I
started reading it that night. It was not that good. This author had won the Pulitzer Prize, but
not for this sad little one.Still,I gave it every chance.Maybe it would prove itself on the
last page.
It did not.
6/10
And it was almost overdue. But the library wasn't urging me to do it.Apparently.
word was out:Nobody clse wanted to read it,either.And.when I went to return it,the
library was closed. The sign directed me to the renewed location,3 miles from home.
Renovations were complete.
It was gorgcous. There was art;there was light;there were cozy chairs.community
rooms.and large windows. In a world where facts are sometimes manufactured to order and
the truth can twist out of reach.there is comfort and harmony in a library that stays put.
I rcturned my book.four wecks late.No onc was in line to check it out.As I slipped
the book into the return slot.I gave it a gentle pat."Find a shelf and make yourself at homc."
I whispered.The library is my home now,too.

A new study has found that breathing does more than just move air in and out of your
lungs it could even be used to identify who you are.Scientists at Israel's Weizmann
Institute of Science discovered that each person has a distinct breathing pattern, known as a
nasal (breathing "fingerprint"a unique pattern that reveals clues about a person's
physical and mental health.Notably.brain scientist Timna Soroka shared,"We were able to
identify differences between less depressed and non-depressed individuals."
The researchers originally set out to better understand bow our sense of smell works.
In humans.the brain proccsses smell during inhalation ()and this close connection
between the bram and breathing led the team to wonder:could our breathing patterns reflect
the way our brains are wired-and be unique to each of us?To explore this question, they
developed a lightweight, wearable device that tracks nasal airflow continuously for 24
hours.
The study, published in the journal Current Biology, tested 100 healthy young adults
as they went about their regular routines-running,studying,resting,and more. The
results showed breathing patterns can identify individuals with 96.8 percent accuracy."I
thought it would be really hard to identify someone because everyone is doing different
things,"said Soroka."But it turns out their breathing patterns were remarkably distinct!"
Beyond individual identification, the study also found clear links between breathing
patterns and body mass index (BMD,sleep-wake cycles, and mental health traits such as
anxiety and depression. For example, people who scored higher on anxiety tests tended to
have shorter inhalation periods.Importantly, the researchers noted that they only know there
is an association between breathing and mood, but they don't know the cause-and-effect
direction-whether feeling anxious changes breathing,or a certain breathing pattern
causes anxiety. If the latter is true, changing how we breathe could potentially improve
mood.
However, the current device has drawbacks:it uses soft tubes under the nose that can
be uncomfortable to wear and may slip during sleep, and it doesn't track mouth breathing.
The team is working on improving the device and further exploring the breathing-mood
connection to unlock more practical applications
61.Why is breathing"fingerprint"mentioned?
A.To explain how the brain processes smell.
B.To introduce a newly-invented tracking device.
C.To show a link between breathing and depression
D.To stress the uniqueness of personal breathing pattern.
2.What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Trained.
B.Powered.
C.Controlled.
D.Connected.
8/10
63.What can we infer about the relationship betwcen breathing and mood?
A.Changes in breath cure anxicty.
B.Anxiety always causes abnormal breathing.
C.Their exact relationship remains unclear.
D.Brcathing is responsible for negative mood
04.What is a limitation of the current wearable device?
A.It cannot track nasal airflow for 24 hours straight.
B.It fails to monitor breathing through the mouth.
C.It is too heavy to be wom during daily activitics.
D.It can only be used to test healthy young adults.
65.What is the main finding of this research?
A.Our fingerprints tell a lot about our health.
B.A groundbreaking device reveals mental health.
C.Brcathing patters link to identity and health
D.Anxicty levels link to shorter inhalation periods.
第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
In the early 2010s,I was sent to live in rural Florida. One day,I received a bowl full
of wild turkey eggs from a tractor driver.I had to act fast, buying an incubator (at
short notice and turning the eggs twice a day,as a turkey hen would.I would regularly"talk"
to them, recreating the sounds a wild turkey would make on its nest,in order to get the eggs
accustomed to my voice.A week or so into the experiment,I started to hear responses from
them and the first tiny beak broke through.Soon,I had a new family of 16 wild
turkeys.
I built a large pen (to protect these lovely birds, complete with upright branches
for them to rest on;at a week and a half old, they could already fly.During the day we
explored the surrounding countryside.I quickly became familiar with each bird's
personality:Little Friend, who always wanted to be by my side;Sweet Pea,who enjoyed
being held and softly touched;Rosita, who was fascinated by squirrels.
While living with the turkeys,I discovered their communication was far subtler than
T'd realised. For example,we encountered many snakes as we explored and I was soon able
to discern the different sounds they made.I also identified various sounds of snakes. After
six months,I had a good ear for different sounds, though occasionally I'd miscall and get a
very different reaction from the one I'd expected.
The project lasted two years. The turkeys grew fast, but my separation from them
began when they started roosting in trees outside their pen, where I could not follow.I felt a
