Ben: 1.____________
Mr Li: Researchers counted the water, wood, oil and electricity used to make each one, then divided by the number of books read.
Ben: 2.____________
Mr Li: It depends. A paper book is used once; an e-reader must be read about fifty times to pay back what it cost to make.
Ben: 3.____________
Mr Li: No. If you read ten books a year, paper wins. If you read sixty, the screen wins.
Ben: 4.____________
Mr Li: That is the weak point. A battery lasts three or four years, and then the device is waste.
Ben: 5.____________
Mr Li: Twenty. So I borrow from the library, and I keep my old phone.
拓展提高(课内同源 + 课外同源)
Passage1(课内同源:把书读四十次)
Which is greener, a paper book or an e-reader? The honest answer is that the question is badly asked. / A paper book uses water, wood and energy before it reaches you, and it is read once. An e-reader uses far more energy and rare metals, but it is read hundreds of times. The comparison only works if you divide by the number of books. / One widely quoted study found that an e-reader has to replace about fifty paper books before it becomes the greener choice. A person who reads ten books a year and buys them all new will never reach that number. A person who reads sixty books a year will pass it in the first year. / There is a third choice that beats both: the library. A book that is borrowed forty times uses the same paper as a book that is read once. / “The greenest book,” our teacher says, “is the one that already exists.”
任务一:单项选择
1.Why is the question “which is greener” badly asked?
A.Because the comparison only works per book read. B.Because paper is always worse. C.Because e-readers are new. D.Because nobody has studied it.
2.What choice beats both paper and screen?
A.Borrowing from a library. B.Buying second-hand. C.Reading online. D.Reading less.

Passage2(课外同源:纸页上的地图)
Does it matter whether you read on paper or on a screen? For a long text, the research suggests that it does. / In 2014, a team in Europe asked hundreds of students to read the same texts in print and on screen, then tested them. On paper, the students remembered more, and they were better at saying where in the text an idea had appeared. / The researchers do not think this is about the screen itself. Paper gives the eyes and the hands more clues: a page has a shape, a left edge, a weight in the hand, and a position in a thick block of pages. These small physical clues help the brain build a map of the text. / A screen scrolls. Every page looks like every other page, and the position of a sentence is a number in a bar. / None of this means screens are bad. For finding one fact quickly, a screen wins. For a long argument that you need to follow and remember, paper still has the advantage. / The useful habit, the researchers say, is to choose deliberately: skim on the screen, and read deeply on paper.
任务一:单项选择
1.What did the 2014 study find?
A.Students remembered more when reading on paper. B.Students read faster on paper. C.Screens improved memory. D.There was no difference at all.
2.Why does paper help memory?
A.Physical clues help the brain build a map of the text. B.Paper smells good. C.Paper is heavier. D.Screens are too bright.
任务二:判断正误(T/F)
3.The researchers think the screen itself is the problem. ( )

任务四范文:I think our school should use e-textbooks for some subjects, but not all. Compared with paper books, a tablet is lighter: my bag would lose about three kilos, and my shoulders would notice. It is also cheaper in the third year, because one device replaces nine books. However, the answer depends on the subject. In maths and science, where we look for one fact and then write, a screen is fine. In Chinese and English, where we read a long text and remember where an idea appeared, paper is better, and the research supports this. My suggestion is to keep paper for reading lessons and use a tablet for everything else.
