It is believed that Laozi lived in the late Spring and Autumn period, more than two thousand years ago. The result was a book of about five thousand characters, the Dao De Jing. / “Dao” is commonly translated as “way” or “path”. The book is not a set of rules. It is a series of short observations about strength, softness, leadership and peace. / Its most famous line is “The highest good is like water.” Water gives life to everything and does not compete with anything. It always flows to the lowest place, and yet it can cut through rock. / The book has been translated into more than a hundred languages, and it is one of the most widely read works in the world. He studied hard and became a teacher. / He believed that education should be open to everyone, not only to rich families. It is said that he had about three thousand students, and that he taught them by asking questions rather than by giving answers. / For fourteen years, he travelled from state to state, hoping to advise rulers. Few listened. He returned home at the age of sixty-eight and spent his last years editing old books and teaching. / After his death, his students wrote down his conversations in a book called the Analects. Many of its sentences are still repeated today: “Learning without thinking is useless; thinking without learning is dangerous.” / Confucius did not build a machine or win a war. 任务四范文:The saying that has influenced me most is “The highest good is like water.” I first read it on a poster in our school library, and I did not understand it at all. Later my teacher explained that water helps everything and competes with nothing. That idea slowly changed the way I work in a group. I used to argue until others agreed with me; now I try to listen first, like water finding the lowest place. The old wisdom is simple, but it is not easy to follow. It has had a quiet influence on my life, and I think that is exactly what the saying means.
