No man is an island.
Human beings are social—we like being with other people and communicating. And one effective way of communicating is speaking face to face.
Intonation (语调) is one of the reasons why face-to-face communication is powerful, because it helps to express more meanings. For example, yesterday you invited your friend to go shopping at the weekend, and he texted that he’d like to. Now, when you read these words on your phone, you may think he has meant “yes”. However, without hearing his intonation, it can be very difficult to know: Did he reply with real interest, or was he just being polite?
Body language makes a big difference, too. Most communication experts agree that it has the biggest influence on how we receive messages. For example, if your friend rolls his eyes (翻白眼) when he says he’d like to go shopping, you can be sure this is actually the last thing he wants to do!
How we listen also plays a key role in face-to-face communication. When people speak to us, do we give them full attention, or do we think about how to reply? Do we show our interest in what they’re saying by nodding our head or looking at their eyes to encourage them to continue?
Communication isn’t just about words. Even if you don’t speak a foreign language well, you’ll still be able to have a basic conversation with the right body language and intonation and show that you are listening!
1.Why does the writer quote (引用) “No man is an island. ” at the beginning of the passage?
2.What makes face-to-face communication powerful according to the passage?
3.Suppose your friend texts “I’d like to” but you find he or she is unwilling when you talk face to face. What will you do? What can you learn from such a situation?
【答案】1.To show human beings are social. 2.Intonation, body language and listening. 3.I will talk face to face. Body language is important.

Some people believe that self-reflection (自我反思) is a good habit for teenagers. What exactly is self-reflection? It means slowing down and thinking about your own behaviour.
Many teenagers are too busy with schoolwork. So they seldom stop to look back on what they have done. They just keep moving forward without thinking. However, self-reflection plays an important role in our growth.
When you reflect, you can see your weak points clearly. For example, you may find that you often lose your temper when you are under great pressure. Then you can try to find ways to control your moods. Besides, self-reflection also helps you know your advantages. You may realize you are good at organizing group activities. This will build up your confidence.
You do not need a long time for self-reflection. You can spend five to ten minutes every night before going to bed. You may ask yourself these simple questions: What did I do well today? What mistake did I make? What should I improve tomorrow?

Personality is made up of our thoughts, feelings and daily actions. Two important factors shape our character: nature and environment. Some personality traits such as being outgoing or quiet are passed down by our parents when we are born, and these natural qualities are hard to change as we grow up. However, most of our personalities will slowly change because of our school study, new friends and all kinds of difficulties we meet in daily life.
If we don’t give up and keep trying after failing exams, we will become braver and much more confident day by day. Teenagers with positive personalities can easily get on well with their classmates and get better grades in all subjects. On the other hand, negative feelings like worry and laziness will slow down our study progress and make fewer friends around us. No one owns perfect personalities, but we can make small progress to fix our bad qualities with long-term daily effort.
1.What two factors shape people’s personalities?

With a high score of 8.2 on Douban, the movie became the dark horse of the summer. Rather than showing them as faraway characters, the story focuses on the Eight Immortals when they were still ordinary (普通的) humans with real flaws (缺点) and funny moments.
Director (导演) Mu Zhengyang wanted these traditional characters to connect with young people based on Chinese classics,” Mu said, “I always wondered why no one made a movie about the Eight Immortals.” To create a special look, the team studied traditional Chinese paintings. Mu added, “Someone told me they decided to become a kinder person after watching the movie. That is exactly it!”

Have you ever agreed with your friends even when you didn’t want to? This often happens because of peer pressure (同伴压力). Peer pressure is the influence from people in your same age group, and it is very common for teenagers. It can be direct, like a friend asking you to copy homework. It can also be indirect, like feeling you need to wear certain clothes to fit in.
Many young people follow their peers because they want to feel welcome and part of the group. They are afraid that saying “no” will make them look different or lead to being left out. However, this can put them in a difficult situation. They may feel stressed and unhappy because they are not being themselves.
So, how can we deal with peer pressure in a smart way? Here are some steps you can follow:
First, take a breath and think. When you feel pushed to do something, don’t answer immediately. Ask yourself: “Is this safe?” “Is this right for me?”
Second, plan your words. It’s easier to say “no” when you know what to say. You can be direct and say, “No, thanks. I’m not comfortable with that.” You can also give a simple reason like, “My parents would be really upset,” or suggest a different idea, such as studying together instead of copying homework.
Finally, find your people. Spend more time with friends who share your values and respect your choices. True friendship should be based on respect, not on pressure.
Remember, learning to handle peer pressure is a part of growing up. By being true to yourself, you build a stronger sense of self and healthier, happier friendships.
1.Why do some young people follow their peers?
2.What steps does the passage suggest to deal with peer pressure?
3.In your opinion, which way is better to deal with peer pressure, following others or saying “no”? Why?
【答案】1.Because they want to feel welcome and part of the group. 2.First, take a breath and think. Second, plan your words. Finally, find your people. 3.In my opinion, it is better to say ‘no’. Because it can help us avoid making mistakes.

Psychologist Sam Gosling asked pet owners to describe their own personalities. Cat people seem to be solitary—enjoy spending time alone. They are also more creative. Dog people seem to be outgoing, energetic and relaxed. They are more likely to see themselves as “responsible and loyal (忠诚的)”.
Asking people to describe their own personalities has limits (限制). Everyone wants to look good. So researchers used object recognition technology to identify (辨别, 鉴定) users who posted pictures of cats or dogs on social media. This way, they can know people’s real personalities.
Dog people looked more social and easygoing. They had more friends on social media than cat people did. Cat people were more likely to be single and to post about feeling tired, angry, or sad. But cat people also seemed more smart and open-minded. They liked social media pages about books, TV shows, and movies more than dog people did.
Sometimes people disagree with these findings because they can think of exceptions. Some cat owners are outgoing. Some dog owners are worriers. That doesn’t make research on cat and dog people wrong. Most research focuses on groups of people. It describes what is true in general, not what is true for each individual (个人).
Pet owners’ personalities might affect pet preferences because people choose pets that they think match their personalities. It seems reasonable for people who like alone time to choose cats. It is more likely for active, outgoing people to choose dogs. But it may not be that simple. Pet choices also might influence pet owners’ personalities, “It wouldn’t be surprising if it works both ways,” Gosling says.
1.What are cat people like according to Gosling?
2.Why did researchers use object recognition technology?
3.Who posted more often about feeling tired, angry, or sad?
4.What’s the possible relationship between pet owners’ personalities and pet choices?
【答案】1.They seem to be solitary and creative. 2.To know people’s real personalities. 3.Cat people. 4.They might influence each other.

Some people believe that self-reflection (自我反思) is a good habit for teenagers. What exactly is self-reflection? It means slowing down and thinking honestly about your own behaviour, feelings and decisions after something has happened.
Many teenagers are too busy with schoolwork. They spend most of their time doing homework or taking part-time after-school classes. They seldom stop to look back on what they have done.
Self-reflection will not bring quick changes to you. But if you keep doing it every day, little by little you will make great progress.

3.If you argue with your friend, how will self-reflection help you deal with this problem?
【答案】1.It means slowing down and thinking honestly about your own behaviour, feelings and decisions after something has happened. 2.We can know our weak points and advantages through self-reflection./Through self-reflection, we can see our weak points clearly and know our advantages. 3.Self-reflection will help me think about my own behaviour and mistakes in the argument.

2.Where do traits like being quiet come from?
3.Can failing exams change our personalities? Why?
4.What kind of students get along well with classmates easily?
5.Give one example of negative feelings that slow down our progress.
Chinese science scored big again! Du Mengran, a geoscientist (地质学家), and Liang Wenfeng, the founder (创立者) of DeepSeek, have been successfully chosen for Nature in 2025. Together with eight other great people from around the world, they won the honour because they have made many excellent achievements that have pushed for the development of global science this year.
Du was chosen for her excellent achievements in exploring the deep-sea world. In the submersible (潜水器) Fendouzhe, her team dived down to over nine kilometers more than 20 times. In the dark deep-sea environment, the team discovered the deepest-known animal ecosystem (生态系统) which is completely new to science on Earth for the first time. When facing the unknown, the best way to do is to go and see for yourself, she says. Her words have become an encouraging motto for many researchers.
Liang was chosen for developing new AI models. His company, DeepSeek, released (发布) its powerful and affordable AI model early this year. As soon as the model was released, it shocked the global technology community as it’s equal to the best US model including ChatGPT. It showed that the United States was not as far ahead in the AI field as many people had ever thought.
“Nature’s 10” is a yearly list of ten people who made huge contributions to science. It’s not a prize or ranking (排名) but a selection of important stories in science over the past year. It allows others to see these great people who are working hard to help us understand the world. It also encourages more young people to follow their dreams in science.

In China, intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) has been passed down from generation to generation. Behind every great piece of traditional artwork is an artist with a special personality. Master Wang, a famous wood carving artist in Suzhou, is a perfect example of this.
Wang has been curious about wood carving since his childhood. He believes that every piece of wood has its own soul. Making a beautiful sculpture requires not only excellent skills but also an amazing imagination. More importantly, a wood carver must be extremely patient. Sometimes, Wang has to sit in his small studio for over ten hours a day, paying attention to every detail of the wood. “A miss is as good as a mile. Any tiny mistake may ruin the whole work,” he often tells his students.
In modern society, many young people are too energetic and eager for quick success to choose such a lonely career. However, Master Wang never thought of giving up. He thinks that nothing is more meaningful than bringing a piece of dead wood to life. His organized and peaceful mind helps him create works that impress people from all over the world.

When people think of ancient Chinese immortals (仙人), they usually imagine perfect people who live in the clouds. However, a popular animated movie (动画电影) changed that view this summer. The film All wishes Come True! came to theaters in July and quickly won over millions of audience.
Each character wears clothes with special details, like lotus flowers and patterns of medicinal plants. The action in the movie is exciting as well. Kung fu masters created different fighting styles for each hero based on their personalities. Lü Dongbin uses formal and careful moves, while Tieguai Li uses wild, street-style moves. With bright traditional colors, every fight feels lively.
At its heart, the movie asks a question: What does it mean to be a hero? “Flying on clouds doesn’t make you a true immortal,” Director Mu explained that being a real hero means having the courage to stand up for others.” He wants people to know that doing the right thing always matters, even if results take time. Mu added, “Someone told me they decided to become a kinder person after watching the movie. That is exactly it!”
Now the movie is reaching more audiences abroad. When people around the world meet these characters, they can share the same laughter and warmth. After all, the greatest legends are never about perfect gods, but ordinary people who choose to be brave.
1.When did the movie come to theaters?
2.What were the Eight Immortals like before becoming gods?
3.Why did the team study traditional Chinese paintings?
4.According to the director, what does being a real hero mean?
5.What can you learn from the movie?
China is a country with a long history and rich culture, especially Tang Poetry and Song Ci.
Tang Poetry
Poetry in the Tang Dynasty reached the peak (巅峰) in the development of poetry. It’s worthy of its fame in Chinese culture. It’s an ideal mix of thought and art.
In terms of themes, those poems tell us about politics, wars, history, landscapes, street scenes, love and so on. In terms of style, Tang Poetry can be divided into classical poems, seven-character octaves (七言律诗) and five-character quatrains (五言绝句). Considering poets, we can find poets from emperors, officials, farmers, fishermen and even children. Two of the most famous poets we know are Li Bai and Du Fu. Poems of the Tang Dynasty enjoyed a golden environment because of the prosperous country and free rules.
Song Ci
Ci in the Song Dynasty showed another type of poetry at that time. This type of poem is the same as lyrics created for musical accompaniment (伴奏), and the words of Ci had to match the rhythm (韵律) of the music.
Ci, depending on its length, can be divided into xiaoling (short-sized, less than 58 characters), zhongdiao (middle-sized, 59~90 characters), and changdiao (long-sized, more than 91 characters).
Each Ci has a title as well as cipai which is the name of the musical style and decides the rhythm and form. The names of cipai were created from famous people or events in history.

Why?

Nowadays, more and more teenagers are suffering from different kinds of teenage problems. Some feel much stress from schoolwork. Some have disagreements with their parents. Some meet peer pressure from classmates.
Some teenagers feel stressed because of endless homework and after-school training classes. Their parents expect them to get high marks. In order not to let parents down, they stay up late almost every night. However, too much stress makes them tired and it is hard for them to focus in class. Their grades may even drop as a result.
The generation gap is another serious problem. Teenagers hope for more freedom to manage their own lives. They want to choose their hobbies and make some small decisions by themselves. But many parents still stick to their own ideas. They worry that teenagers are too young to make right choices. So arguments often break out at home. Many teens regret arguing with their parents, but they don’t know how to improve the situation.
Peer pressure also influences teenagers a lot. Some teenagers change their tastes or behaviors just to get along with their classmates. They risk wasting time and money just to follow others. They are afraid of being left out of the group.
It is normal for teenagers to meet these troubles. But we should learn proper ways to deal with them. Communicating patiently, taking active action and asking for advice are all helpful.

2.Why do some teenagers stay up late almost every night?
3.What do teenagers hope for when generation gap appears?
4.Who does peer pressure come from according to the passage?

Self-reflection will not bring quick changes to you. But if you keep doing it every day, little by little you will make great progress.
1.What does self-reflection mean?

Everyone feels stress sometimes. For teenagers, exams, homework and getting along with classmates are common causes of stress. A little stress is good because it pushes us to work harder. However, too much stress can make us feel worried and unhappy, and even get us down.
Here are some ways to deal with stress. First, talk to someone you trust, such as your parents, friends or teachers. Sharing your feelings can make you feel better. Second, take part in activities you enjoy, like sports, music or drawing. Third, make a plan for your study instead of worrying about it. A good plan helps you finish your work on time.
