QUOTES FOR WORRIERS
You’ll never find a rainbow if you look down!
Send me a worry, and I’ll send you a quote (暖心语录) for free! If you like the quote, please let me know.
Drummer Boy
I got a drum kit (套装) for my 16th birthday. There’s a cool band at school. Their drummer, Lucas, is leaving as his family’s moving. The band asked if I’d try out and Lucas will teach me. But I’m not sure if I’m good enough. I don’t want to get my hopes up and be upset if I don’t make it.
Tim 7:20 p.m./2nd May
Here’s a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “Man often becomes what he believes himself to be.” If you keep saying you can’t do something, you might end up unable to. But if you believe you can, you’ll get the ability, even if you don’t have it at first.
Shall I Stay or Go?
I’m in a difficult situation. My aunt and uncle in the US invited me for a month. It sounds great, but they live in a small town and have no kids. I’m worried there won’t be anyone my age to hang out with. I’m afraid I’ll regret whatever I decide. Help!
Alice 9:10 p.m./3rd May
Winston Churchill said, “A negative (消极的) thinker sees the difficulty in every chance; a positive (积极的) thinker sees the chance in every difficulty.” Even if there are problems, there are also great things you can do there that you can’t at home. So, go and remember the rainbow!

One morning, the little prince came to a garden full of roses, where he met a fox. The fox looked at him with bright eyes and did not run away.
“Good morning,” said the fox politely.
“Who are you?” asked the little prince. “You are so lovely to look at.”
“I am a fox,” it said.
“Come and play with me,” the little prince begged. “I am so unhappy.” “I cannot play with you,” the fox answered. “I am not tamed (驯服).”
“What does ‘tamed’ mean?”
“It is something too often forgotten,” said the fox. “It means to build a relationship. To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy, just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. You, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique (独一无二的) in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world...”
“I begin to understand,” said the little prince. “There is a flower... I think she has tamed me...”
“My life is rather dull,” the fox went on. “I run after chickens, and men run after me. All chickens are just alike, and all men are just alike. But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life. I shall know the sound of your footsteps, which will be different from all the others. Other steps make me hurry back underground, but yours will call me like music out of my burrow (地洞).”
The little prince did tame the fox. When the hour came for him to leave, the fox grew very quiet, and a tear shone in its soft eyes.
“Ah,” said the little prince, “I shall want to cry.”
“My secret is very simple,” said the fox. “It is with the heart that one can see rightly; what is valuable cannot be seen with the eyes alone.”
“What is valuable cannot be seen with the eyes alone,” the little prince repeated slowly, so that he would remember it.
“It is the time you have spent on your rose that makes her so important.”

I looked at my blank page, then at the rest of the class. They were all busily scribbling away. It made me feel sick. All I’d written was the title “What I Want to Be When I Grow Up”. I had more ink (墨水) on my fingers than on the paper.
If I wrote, “I don’t know”, our teacher, Ms Clark, would not be impressed. It would be a lie anyway because I did know, but I wasn’t about to tell anyone yet. They’d just laugh at me.
“You have five minutes to finish,” Ms Clark announced, checking her watch, “and then Angela Shaw will collect your papers.”
“She would pick me,” I whispered to my friend, Lisa. “I don’t know what to write. Any ideas?”
“How about her?” Lisa pointed with her pen at Ms Clark’s back.
“I can’t say I want to be her!”
“No silly! I mean a teacher”.
Sucking my pen for inspiration (灵感), I had time to write, “I want to be a teacher when I grow up because they finish work early, have long holidays and get free pens and paper. You can also tell everyone what to do and be as bossy as you like….” when the bell went.
Lisa handed me her paper. She’d written about 30 lines and I’d only done five. Luckily some of the others hadn’t written much either. I noticed this as Ms Clark put them in her folder.
“Thank you, Angela. Wait! What have you been chewing? Your lips are blue.”
“Nothing, Ms Clark.” I rubbed my mouth and remembered my leaking pen.
“What did you write about?” I asked Lisa. I was curious because she’d written so much. “I said I wanted to be the first woman to walk on the moon.”
“Wow! Do you really? I’d love to see you in one of those bubble helmets. Imagine, one day I might turn on the TV and there you’d be, waving a flag and singing the national anthem.” I laughed as I pictured Lisa floating in space.
“No, I just thought it would make a good story, though it would be fun, wouldn’t it? I like writing. That’s what I want to be-a famous writer!” said Lisa.
“I might have to beg for your autograph!” I joked, and was about to tell her my secret ambition (抱负) when some other girls joined us, so I didn’t.
1.What does the underlined sentence “I had more ink on my fingers than on the paper.” mean?
A.She liked playing with ink while thinking in class.
B.She felt very bored with the writing.
C.She thought hard but nothing came to her mind.
D.She felt unsure about the writing.
2.What can we infer from the passage about Angela?
A.She didn’t write her real dream on the paper.

3.Which is the best title for this story?

C.Angela’s lips turned blue because of her leaking pen.
D.Ms Clark knew Angela’s secret dream very well.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.B 4.C
【导语】本文主要讲述了Angela在课堂上完成以“长大后想做什么”为题的作文时,因害怕被嘲笑没有写下自己真实的梦想,课后和好友Lisa交流各自真实抱负的小故事。
1.词句猜测题。根据文章第1段“All I’d written was the title ‘What I Want to Be When I Grow Up’. I had more ink on my fingers than on the paper.”可知,Angela只写出了作文标题,纸上几乎没有内容,墨水都沾在了手指上,说明她苦思冥想也没想出可写的内容。
2.推理判断题。根据文章第2段“It would be a lie anyway because I did know, but I wasn’t about to tell anyone yet. They’d just laugh at me.”以及最后一段“and was about to tell her my secret ambition (抱负) when some other girls joined us, so I didn’t.”可知,Angela有自己的秘密梦想,既没有告诉别人,也没有写在要上交的作文里。
3.最佳标题题。根据文章第1段的作文主题“What I Want to Be When I Grow Up”,结合全文围绕Angela和Lisa的未来梦想展开叙述的内容,可推知“未来的梦想”最能概括故事核心,适合作为标题。
4.细节理解题。根据文章“‘Thank you, Angela. Wait! What have you been chewing? Your lips are blue.’”和“‘Nothing, Ms Clark.’ I rubbed my mouth and remembered my leaking pen.”可知,Angela的嘴唇变蓝是因为她的笔漏墨,她咬笔思考时墨水沾到了嘴唇上。
A story happened when the telegraph (电报) was the fastest method of long-distance communication. One day, a young man went to an interview for a job as a Morse code operator (莫尔斯电码报务员). Answering the ad in the newspaper, he went to the office address. When he arrived, he walked into a large, busy office filled with noise, including the sound of the telegraph. An office worker asked him to wait until he was called to go into the inner office. Seven other people were already in the waiting area for the interview (面试). The young man sat down and waited with them. After a few minutes, the young man stood up, crossed the room to the door of the inner office, and walked right in. Naturally the other people wondered what was going on. They were sure that the young man had made a mistake and would be refused.
A few minutes later, however, the boss came out of the inner office with the young man and said to the other people, “Gentlemen, thank you very much for coming, but the young man has got the job.” The other people were surprised, and one of them said, “Wait a minute. I don’t understand. He was the last to come in, and we never even got a chance to be interviewed. Yet he got the job. That’s not fair!”
The boss said, “I’m sorry, but all the time you’ve been sitting here, the telegraph has been sending out the following message in Morse code: ‘If you understand this message, then come right in. The job is yours.’ None of you heard it or understood it. This young man did. The job is his.”

Wei Shijie, known as the “nuclear weapon expert” (核武器专家), is a respectable scientist living in Qingdao. For 26 years of his early life, he worked silently for China’s nuclear science, staying unknown to the public. He devoted (奉献) his best years to the country’s development. However, life was hard for him. In his later years, his two children suffered from serious illnesses and could not take good care of themselves. The aging old man had to shoulder the heavy stress of the whole family alone.
In 1998, a young woman named Wang Yueling came to Qingdao and began to work as a helper for Mr. Wei. At first, she only helped with science articles. But soon, she saw the scientist’s hard life and his selfless love for the country. Moved deeply, she decided to stay and look after the whole family.
For more than twenty years, Wang Yueling has stuck to her promise. She takes good care of the two sick children’s daily life, comforts them patiently and helps the elderly scientist deal with trivial family chores. She never asks for reward. To thank her lifelong kindness, Mr. Wei even named her one of the legal guardians (法定监护人) of his children, trusting her completely with his family’s future.
Their simple but touching story shows the warm side of ordinary life. The scientist devoted himself to our nation quietly, while the ordinary woman devoted her best years to guarding the scientist’s family. True respect never lies in words, but in long-term efforts and silent kindness.

“When men trained me, they trapped me in a corner. They held my nose so hard that I could hardly breathe. They pulled my mouth open and put a sharp bit (马嚼子) inside. They beat me non-stop. No one gave me a chance to figure out what they wanted.”
She went on, “Later I was sold to a fashionable gentleman. They put a tight check-rein on me. It made my neck ache for hours. The sharp bit hurt my tongue and jaw. I was filled with anger all the time. I bit people simply because they treated me so badly.”
At Birtwick Park, John and James treated Ginger with great patience. They never shouted at her or hit her. Week after week, they spoke to her in soft voices and provided her with good food and clean water. At first, Ginger still kept her guard up. She found it hard to trust human beings. She would step back whenever someone drew near. Slowly, her anger faded away little by little.
“I do believe Ginger is starting to like me,” James said one day.
“She will become as good-natured as Black Beauty one day,” John replied. “Kindness is all she needs, poor thing. We must give her enough time to open her heart.”

How many boundaries (边界) do we cross without realizing it?
On Aug 30, I stood at the starting line of the Sydney Marathon, excited to take part in my first World Marathon Majors (世界马拉松大满贯). I had just traveled all the way from China to Australia. Around me were about 40,000 runners from over 140 countries.
The first 24 kilometers felt almost easy as I moved through the streets of Sydney. Then I met a boundary, one I could not “see” but could otherwise feel in my body. At 24 kilometers, my legs became heavy, and running suddenly felt like a challenge.
My pacer noticed the change in my running form and showed me a small adjustment that helped me save energy. He was from Sydney. As we ran together, he talked about pacers he had met from the US, the UK, Norway, and China.
It reminded me of a friend I met during a half marathon in Tokyo in 2024; we finished the race together. In 2025, she sent me information about entering the Sydney Marathon. I managed to get a place, but she did not. Although she was not there on race day, her support somehow played a key role in helping me get to the starting line.
That is what I love about running. It provides us with more boundaries to break: the borders between countries, the bonds (纽带) between friends, and the connections between strangers. When I finally crossed the finish line, I realized that the marathon was never just a race. The farther I ran, the more boundaries I broke—and the more connected my world became.
1.What do we know about the Sydney Marathon?
A.It was the writer’s first marathon. B.It started at the Harbour Bridge.
C.The runners came from many countries. D.The whole race was 24 kilometers long.
2.What happened to the writer at 24 kilometers?
A.She hurt her legs in an accident. B.She decided to slow down and walk.
C.She began to feel tired but kept running. D.She thought about giving up the race.
3.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The pacer’s talk about other pacers. B.The writer’s run with her friend.
C.The change in the writer’s running. D.The pacer’s advice on the writer’s form.
4.What does the writer want to show by mentioning her friend?
A.She wished her friend had been there. B.One cannot finish a marathon without others’ help.
C.Marathons have helped her connect with others. D.There are many talented runners in the world.
【答案】1.C 2.C 3.A 4.C

Beth had a serious disease, and she was worse than the doctor expected. Jo and Meg didn’t know much about looking after sick people, so Hannah looked after Beth. She was an excellent nurse. Jo sat next to Beth’s bed day and night and watched her. The doctor came twice a day, but Beth got worse.
The days seemed very dark now and the house seemed empty. Nobody laughed. Meg and Jo worked and waited with heavy hearts. They missed their sweet little sister. Everybody missed the little girl. Mr Laurence locked his piano because nobody came to play it. The neighbors sent all kinds of nice things for her and their good wishes. Even poor Mrs Hummel came to the house to say sorry. The girls were surprised to discover how many friends shy little Beth had.
Doctor Bangs came the following morning. He looked at Beth and held her hot hand in his. Then he turned to Hannah and said in a low voice, “Tell Mrs March to come home.” Jo ran downstairs, wrote a short telegram (电报) to her mother and went out into the snowstorm to send it.
For the rest of the day, a breath of fresh air seemed to blow through the house. Something better than sunshine brightened the quiet rooms. When the girls met, their pale faces broke into smile. They hugged each other and whispered, “Mother’s coming! Mother’s coming!”
The snow continued to fall all day. The hours passed very slowly. The doctor came and told them to expect a change in Beth’s condition, for better or worse, at about midnight. Hannah lay down on the sofa and fell asleep. Mr Laurence walked up and down the sitting room, looking worried. Laurie lay on the rug (小块地毯) and looked into the fire. The girls didn't sleep at all that night.

【导语】本文改编自《小妇人》,讲述了 Beth 重病期间,家人悉心照料,邻居送来关怀,母亲赶回家的故事,展现了困境中的亲情与友情。
1.细节理解题。在文章第二段末尾明确提到“The girls were surprised to discover how many friends shy little Beth had”,直接点明了Beth的性格是害羞的,对应选项C“shy”。
2.词句猜测题。结合划线句的上下文:文章第一段提到Beth病情持续加重,第二段后文写到“Nobody laughed. Meg and Jo worked and waited with heavy hearts. They missed their sweet little sister.”,都体现出姐妹们因为Beth病重,内心十分悲伤、满心担忧妹妹的状态,和选项A的描述完全吻合。
3.篇章结构题。我们可以从《小妇人》的原作背景和节选文本的叙事逻辑梳理: 首先,四姐妹和邻居相识交好(a. Beth made friends with her neighbours),这是所有后续事件发生的前提; 之后Beth生病,邻居们前来探望慰问,对应b. Mrs Hummel came to the house to say sorry; 第二天Bangs医生前来诊视Beth,握住她发烫的手判断病情危急,对应d. Doctor Bangs looked at Beth and held her hot hand; 随后Jo冒雪出门给妈妈发电报告知情况,对应c. Jo went out to send Mother a short telegram; 到了夜里医生告知大家Beth的病情在午夜会出现重大转折,对应e. The girls were told to expect a change in Beth's illness。 最终顺序为a-b-d-c-e,对应选项C。
4.推理判断题。文中第二段提到“Mr Laurence locked his piano because nobody came to play it”,结合前文Laurence一家和四姐妹交好的设定,可以推断出之前女孩们常常为Laurence先生弹奏钢琴,在Beth病重后就没人再来弹琴了,完全符合文本逻辑。D选项“The girls used to play the piano for Mr Laurence.”符合。
Imagine this. There’s an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like? The delicious cake or the healthy apple? A bestseller, Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength, suggests that willpower (意志力) is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term.
Here is a famous experiment in the book: the Marshmallow (棉花糖) Test. From 1968 to 1970, Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 children aged four to six. In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow on a table in front of them. They were given two choices: they could either eat it or, if they waited fifteen minutes, they’d be given a second one (and then they could eat both).
So, what did the kids do? Well, as you can imagine, 70% ate the first marshmallow within the fifteen minutes. But the other 30% showed willpower—they controlled themselves and waited for the second marshmallow. But then Mischel discovered something really interesting. Twenty years later, he got in touch with the children, who, by then, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who had strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle (肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. So, if you do daily “self-control exercises”, such as making your bed or brushing your teeth, you’ll improve your overall willpower. And daily willpower exercises will help you with those bigger goals, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.
Be careful though. Just like any muscle, your “willpower muscle” can get tired. If you’ve had to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat. That way, you’ll build up your willpower again.
And one last thing, the writer mentions people who learn foreign languages usually have a lot of willpower. So, congratulations!
1.What were the children asked to do in the experiment?
A.To eat it right away
B.To wait for fifteen minutes
C.To share it with others
D.To choose one now or wait for two
2.What did Mischel find about the children twenty years later?
A.The waiters achieved all their goals
B.The test helped children finish university
C.Better marks made students more popular
D.Early self-control may predict later success
3.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Most children have strong willpower
B.Willpower benefits us and can be built up
C.The experiment trained their young muscles
D.Language learners should rest their tired muscles
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.B

If you have ever had to struggle through a lesson after spending half the night on homework, fighting to keep your eyes open, you are not alone. A recent survey of teenagers shows that over 60% get less than eight hours’ sleep on school nights, and nearly 15% sleep fewer than six hours.
What makes sleep so important is that, while you are asleep, your brain is still quietly at work: it sorts through what you have learned during the day and stores it in lasting memory. In one study, students with eight hours’ sleep did much better in a memory test than those who stayed up all night to review. Getting enough sleep also helps you stay focused in class, think faster and keep a good mood. Students who sleep poorly often feel tired or angry more easily, and some even fall asleep at their desks.
If heavy schoolwork is one reason so many teenagers go to bed late, the habits formed around bedtime are very often another. It has become common to lie in bed with a phone, moving from one short video to the next message long after the lights are off. The blue light from screens tells the brain that it is still daytime, so it is harder to fall asleep. Tea, coffee and cola, drunk late in the day, can leave the mind too awake to rest even around midnight.
The encouraging part is that a few small changes are often enough. Doctors have some simple advice. Try to go to bed and get up at about the same time every day, even on weekends. Keep your phone out of the bedroom, or do something relaxing before sleep, such as reading a paper book. When homework truly cannot be completed, an honest talk with the teacher is wiser than staying up late to get it done. A brain that has rested well simply learns faster; sleep, looked at in the right way, is not time lost but time quietly put to work.
1.What percentage of students in the survey get less than six hours’ sleep?
A.15 %. B.About 60 %. C.Over 80 %. D.Nearly 100 %.
2.What does the brain do while we are sleeping?
A.It rests completely at night.
B.It organizes learning into memory.
C.It gives off special blue light.
D.It keeps the tired mind wide awake.
3.A student who stays up late going over a lesson again and again may _______.
A.remember it for a longer time
B.develop a stronger memory slowly
C.remember less than a rested student
D.become more focused in the morning
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Why does Sleep Matter So Much?

C.How can Students Change Bad Habits?
D.What does The Study’s Memory Test Show?
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.C 4.A

Have you ever used Rock Paper Scissors as a way to deal with a disagreement? In fact, this simple game originated (起源) in China over 2,000 years ago.
According to Wuzazu (《五杂俎》) from the Ming Dynasty, the game dates back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). It was first called “Shoushiling”, meaning “hand command (指令) game”. Later, the game spread to Japan and became modern rock-paper-scissors. From Japan, it reached Europe and America in the early 20th century.
Although the game seems to depend on luck, research shows several winning tips:
◇First, throw matters. Studies show men often start with Rock, while women prefer Scissors. Adjust (调整) your first move to match it-Paper beats Rock, and Rock beats Scissors.
◇Losers change patterns. After losing, most players change to a move that beats the other’s last choice. Use this tip to guess their next move.
◇Beginners love Rock. New players often choose Rock because it feels strong. Beat them with Paper. Chinese scientists have found these patterns through research.
Today, Rock Paper Scissors has become an organized sport. The World Rock Paper Scissors Association (WRPSA) runs official championships (锦标赛), including yearly World Championships with prize money up to $10,000.
China now officially recognizes rock-paper-scissors as a competitive game. It has held national championships since 2003. In 2019, Beijing hosted the World Championship, and organizers said the game is an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) full of ancient Chinese wisdom.

Many teenagers know that they spend too much time on electronic products, but “use less” is too general to be useful. A phone can be a dictionary, a camera, a timetable, a music player and a door to games. If teenagers do not know which use is necessary and which use is only a habit, they may either give up too quickly or argue with adults about every minute.
A better method is to divide screen time into three groups. The first group is necessary use, such as checking homework messages or looking up a word. The second group is useful but controllable use, such as watching a lesson video. The third group is habit use, such as opening short videos whenever there is a free minute. Only the third group should be cut first.
Another method is to create “ending points”. Many apps are designed without a natural end. One video leads to another, and one game asks for one more round. Teenagers can set an ending point before they begin: three videos, twenty minutes, or one completed task. The key is to decide before the app begins to pull attention away.
Parents can help, but the way they help matters. A rule made only by adults may lead to secret use. A rule made together is easier to follow. For example, a teenager may agree to put the phone outside the bedroom after 10 p.m., while parents agree not to check messages without permission. In this way, control does not mean losing trust.
Electronic products are not enemies. The real goal is to make them tools again. When teenagers name their screen habits, set ending points and build fair rules with adults, they are more likely to control the screen instead of being controlled by it.
1.Why does the writer begin this passage by saying “use less” is too general?
A.To show that electronic products have different uses and need clearer management.
B.To explain why teenagers are unable to use phones for school work.
C.To suggest that adults should count every minute of screen time for teenagers.
D.To show that electronic products are mainly designed for games and short videos.
2.Which kind of screen use should teenagers reduce first according to this passage?
A.Looking up a new word during homework.
B.Watching a lesson video for a planned task.
C.Checking a timetable before leaving home.
D.Opening short videos whenever there is a free minute.
3.What is the purpose of creating “ending points”?
A.To make teenagers finish homework before using any app.
B.To help teenagers decide limits before apps draw away their attention.
C.To encourage teenagers to choose apps that have a natural ending.
D.To help parents decide which electronic products should be used at home.
4.Which sentence best expresses the writer’s opinion?
A.Teenagers can manage screens better when they separate uses, set limits and make fair rules.
B.Parents should make phone rules first so that teenagers can follow them more quickly.
C.Electronic products become useful when teenagers use them mainly for lessons.
D.Screen control depends more on bedroom rules than on teenagers’ own habits.
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.B 4.A
【导语】本文主要讲述了青少年如何管理电子产品使用时间,核心结论是通过区分用途、设定结束点和制定公平规则,让青少年重新掌控屏幕,而非被屏幕控制。
1.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“A phone can be a dictionary, a camera, a timetable, a music player and a door to games.”及“If teenagers do not know which use is necessary and which use is only a habit...”可知,作者认为“少用”太笼统,因为电子产品有多种用途,需要更清晰的管理区分必要使用和习惯使用。
2.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The third group is habit use, such as opening short videos whenever there is a free minute. Only the third group should be cut first.”可知,应该首先减少的是习惯性使用,如只要有空就打开短视频。
3.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“The key is to decide before the app begins to pull attention away.”可知,设定“结束点”的目的是在应用程序开始转移注意力之前决定限制。
4.主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“When teenagers name their screen habits, set ending points and build fair rules with adults, they are more likely to control the screen instead of being controlled by it.”可知,作者的观点是青少年通过区分用途、设定限制和制定公平规则能更好地管理屏幕。
①Gossip is the information passed from one person to another about other people’s lives. You may think gossip is bad. Even dictionary entries suggest that it is often unkind or untrue. However, this common idea is unreasonable.
②Firstly, a study by Robbins and Karan in 2019 shows that gossip is common but much of it is just people sharing information. For their study, 467 people’s conversations were recorded. Robbins and Karan found that, on average, these people gossiped for 52 minutes a day, with three quarters of the time spent communicating non-evaluative (非评价性的) information. Only about 14 percent of the gossip was considered malicious, a much smaller percentage than the common idea suggests, although to be fair, that was double the percentage of positive (积极的) gossip.
③Scientists consider gossip to be an important reason why our ancestors (祖先) were able to stay alive. It helped spread important news, but more importantly, it provided information about who was trustworthy and who might not work well with others in a group. It allowed humans to build small communities with those who could be trusted, ensuring a greater chance of living. Today, it seems that not much has changed. Gossip still allows us to form relationships and find out who we can work with best. Gossip also explains the principles (行为准则) of our society. When we hear someone criticize (批评) a person’s behaviour, it is clear that such behaviour is unacceptable and should not be copied.
④Of course, these days, our world is changing the nature of gossip. Our networks are now larger, and some gossip can spread like wildfire. Our obsession (痴迷) with gossip about well-known people may seem unimportant to some, but it serves to bring people closer. Problems come up when gossip includes untrue information. This kind of gossip can destroy people’s lives.
⑤So scientists say that it’s important to share information that is unlikely to hurt others. If we fail to do this, people will see us as someone who can’t be trusted and may even avoid us. Similarly, gossiping to improve one’s own place in society is unacceptable. It’s best to share information that may act as a warning to others or encourage them to behave better. It’s these things that normally push people together rather than make them turn away from each other.

①Almost everybody has had pimples (青春痘). It is a normal part of growing up. When kids reach teens, their bodies experience many changes. During this period, most teenagers often develop pimples. Also, many people continue to have pimples after teens. What can a teenager or an adult do to deal with pimples? Unluckily, many ways are really just myths.
②Many people believe that popping (挤) pimples is the best way. Popping a pimple will cause more redness and pain, or even probably turn into an illness. For that reason, doctors normally encourage people not to pop their pimples.
③Also, do you think that washing your face often will be helpful? Of course, it is a good idea, but washing your face too much could make the skin painful, making the pimples even worse.
④Another widely believed myth is that not wearing make-up can help lower the chance of developing pimples. In fact, some kinds of make-up actually have special medicine in them to fight pimples. As a result, not all of them are bad for you.
⑤Along with make-up, people believe that eating fatty foods or chocolate can cause pimples. The truth is that eating a candy or a piece of pizza will not cause pimples. Even so, both teenagers and adults should still try to eat foods that are good for their bodies and their skin.

In our modern world, patience seems to be disappearing. We want everything instantly (立刻)—instant coffee, instant noodles, instant information. We get annoyed when a website takes more than two seconds to load or when we have to wait in line for more than five minutes. But patience is actually a valuable skill that can improve many parts of our lives.
Learning to wait is difficult, especially for teenagers who are used to getting what they want quickly. But practicing patience can bring surprising benefits. Students who are patient usually perform better on exams because they take their time and avoid careless mistakes. People who are patient in relationships have stronger relationships because they listen more and react less. Even physical health can improve—studies show that impatient people have higher blood pressure and get stress-related illnesses more easily.
Patience is especially important when learning new skills. Mastering a musical instrument, a new language, or a sport needs months or even years of practice. Without patience, many people would give up before they see results. The great violinist Itzhak Perlman once said, “If you want to build a violin, you don’t start with the strings—you start with the wood.” This reminds us that good things take time and that we need to trust the process.
One way to develop patience is to practice mindfulness. When we focus on what is happening now instead of worrying about the future or regretting the past, we naturally slow down and become more patient. Simple activities like breathing exercises or meditation can help train our minds to be more patient.
Patience is not about doing nothing or being passive. It’s about recognizing that some things take time and being willing to wait for them. It’s about believing in the process, even when we can’t see the end result. In a world that values speed, patience is a rare and precious quality. Those who master it will find that it enriches every area of their lives.
1.What does the passage suggest about patience in modern society?
A.It is becoming more common.
B.It is no longer a valuable skill.
C.It is only important for older people.
D.It is disappearing as people want results at once.
2.What does the underlined word “mindfulness” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Paying attention to the present.
B.Doing things as quickly as possible.
C.Worrying about what will happen in the future.
D.Remembering past experiences to learn from them.
3.What is Itzhak Perlman trying to tell us by saying “If you want to build a violin, you don’t start with the strings — you start with the wood.”?
A.People should not start a task until they are fully prepared.
B.We should choose the right materials before starting a task.
C.Real progress comes from patience and trusting the process.
D.Great achievements depend more on talent than on practice.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Only students and athletes need to develop patience.
B.People should avoid modern technology to live a better life.
C.Modern technology is the main reason why people are impatient.
D.Patience is a valuable skill that can be developed through practice.

(Ginger was a horse, who easily got angry from birth. She had suffered very bad treatment from her early owners. When she arrived at Birtwick Park, she often bit people because she had never known real kindness.)
One day, Ginger shared her painful past with Black Beauty.
“When I was young, I was separated from my mother. I never had a kind master to look after me,” she said.

A.remember it for a longer time
B.develop a stronger memory slowly
C.remember less than a rested student

D.What does The Study’s Memory Test Show?
Next time you play, use these tips-and remember you are taking part in a tradition with over 2,000 years of history.

C.Over 2,000 years ago. D.In the early 20th century.
3.Where was the 2019 World Championship held?
A.In Japan. B.In Beijing. C.In America. D.In Europe.
4.Why should you probably throw Paper when playing against a beginner?
A.Because beginners usually throw Rock first. B.Because beginners never change patterns.
C.Because Paper beats Scissors. D.Because beginners are good at guessing.
5.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Rock Paper Scissors is a game that requires both luck and thinking.
B.Chinese scientists invented modern rock-paper-scissors in Japan.
C.The game only became popular after the World Championship in 2019.

When we are at an early age, we do not exactly know who we are and what kind of person we want to be. For most people, they cannot fully understand this world and set up a lifelong goal at a young age. However, knowing what you want could quicken the pace (步伐) to understand yourself and pin down the direction of your development. How to find your potential (潜力) is a serious question. The earlier you know, the better it will help you in your later life. If you are uncertain about yourself, keep reading and refer to the tips below.
Firstly, try to know yourself from your most intimate relationships. They can be your family members, relatives, and they can also be your close friends. Since birth, we are influenced by our families. We take after our parents and they are our first teachers. So why not talk to them and let them give you some advice? If you are still not sure about what you are meant to do, reach out to some of your mentors for advice.
Secondly, explore yourself in the social settings. Your goals could be influenced by your social connections. You can join some Students Unions or clubs to find where your interests lie. While you interact with others who share similar interests, you will get to know more about yourself and have a clearer idea what you want to do in the future.
Thirdly, read more books. Books allow you to learn about other people’s lives. When you learn about others’ experiences, your horizon (视野) will be broadened, and in turn you will know more about yourself as a person. So, why not read more?
As a matter of fact, there are many ways to find yourself. The key is you have to take action. Knowing yourself is essential for preparing for your direction in advance.

1.What does the word “malicious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

That’s not to say we should pay attention to everything we hear, but it gives us direction.

A.To discuss the influence of gossiping.
B.To explain the reason why gossip is common.
C.To remind people of the problems of gossiping.
D.To guide people to be careful when gossiping.
⑥Another myth is that stress can cause pimples. Stress comes in many forms, like a big exam at school or problems with friends. While it is true that stress can cause a person’s skin to create extra oil, this extra oil does not necessarily cause more pimples.
