In the past, working people in Britain only had holidays on special days. Now most people have about four weeks’ holiday every year plus public holidays.
When?
British people usually have their holidays in summer, in July or August. School children are on holiday from the end of July to the start of September. Lots of people buy a package holiday, which, in its basic form, contains round‑trip plane tickets, transportation in destinations, meals and a hotel or an apartment. Parents who take their child on holiday during term time need now to pay a fine of up to 100 pounds.
UK holidays
British people also like to go on holiday in the UK. Warm weather and sun are not guaranteed in the UK of course! What can young British people do on a UK holiday? Here are a few examples. Alton Towers is one of the top UK theme parks. It is famous for its frightening rides and is very popular with teenagers. The Eden Project is an environmental project in Cornwall. It contains thousands of plants from all around the world. You can explore one of the world’s largest indoor rainforests and also see top bands play at the Eden Project.

A couple of years ago, Brian Floca was on an island off the coast of Maine when a storm rolled in. “There was this kind of electric charge in the air,” he remembers. “Just the sensory feeling of the storm coming. The wind, the waves, all of these elemental forces unloading themselves on the island.” But also the feeling of — “Is this safe? Should I really be doing this?”
That memory stuck with Floca — and gave him a great idea. His new children’s book, Island Storm, is about two kids who feel a storm coming, pull on their boots and head to the sea. As the waves crash and the rain starts to fall harder and harder, they ask each other, “Is this enough? Or do we try for more?” They decide to go on. Storms accompany children through every stage of their growth, allowing them to push the boundaries, feel fear, and learn from their adventures.
“It’s a little bit about the urge that we all have sometimes in life,” says Brian Floca. However, he laughs, “The book is not to encourage kids to chase storms. It’s to encourage them to be kids by risk-taking.” Floca invited Sydney Smith for illustrations. “I don’t think there’s anyone who handles water and weather the way Sydney does and with the depth of feeling,” Floca explains. “The illustrations can even be a little bit fearsome, as they communicate that feeling of genuine fear you get when you’re in the presence of something frightening, like a summer storm.”
“I think about childhood a lot in the sense that it’s discovering the line by crossing it,” says illustrator Sydney Smith. “This book acknowledges that this is what childhood is about — going too far and going back and discovering it on your own. You’re allowed that freedom. That’s a childhood in an ideal world.”
And in the end, it’s also a book about safety. The pair are there for each other, their mom is waiting for them at home, and the skies will clear.
4. What inspired Floca to write Island Storm?
A. His love for adventures.
B. His encounter with a storm.
C. His curiosity about nature.
D. His memory of chasing storms.
5. What does the storm symbolize in the book?
A. The power of nature.
B. Parental authority and rules.
C. The risk of growing up.
D. Irresponsible childhood behavior.
6. What does Floca imply about the illustrations?
A. They outperform the plots.
B. They show multiple techniques.
C. They express emotion vividly.
D. They display real-life situations.
7. What is an ideal childhood like in Sydney’s eyes?
A. It allows limitless exploration.
B. It encourages continuous travel.
C. It provides complete freedom.
D. It combines adventure and safety.

A recent survey found children would rather be online influencers (网红) than astronauts. It made headlines and led to plenty of complaints about “kids these days” is influencing a promising career path? The lifestyles we see advertised on social media are enticing, but under the shining appearance lie uncertain income, pay inequality, disability and mental health issues.
Successful influencers will be the first to claim that anyone can make it in the industry. However, social media economy experts uncovered a huge income gap between successful influencers and everyone else. For most people trying to become an influencer, their passion projects of content creation often become free work for brands.
Most influencers are self-employed, often experiencing inconsistent income and a lack of protection that comes with long-term employment. The risks of self-employment are increased in the influencer industry by absence of industry standards and little pay transparency (透明度) . Influencers are often forced to assess their own value and determine fees for their work. As a result, content creators often undervalue their own creative labour, and many end up working for free.
Influencers are also often at the mercy of algorithms — the behind-the-scenes computer programs that determine which posts are shown, in which order, to users. Platforms share little detail about their algorithms, yet they finally determine who and what gains visibility and influence on social media. The threat of invisibility is a constant source of insecurity for influencers, who are under constant pressure to feed platforms with content. If they don’t, they may be “punished” by the algorithm — having posts hidden or displayed lower down on search results.
Constant online presence leads to one of the most common issues in the influencer industry: mental health concerns. Influencers can connect to their platform workspaces and audience at any time of day or night, which can lead to them overworking. Coupled with the fear of online criticism, it contributes to mental and physical health issues.
Although becoming an influencer may look attractive to more and more people, the industry’s dark underside needs to be made visible and improved through enhanced employment regulation and industry-led cultural change.
8. Which of the following words can replace “enticing” in paragraph 1?
A. Imaginative B. Similar. C. appealing. D. Fashionable.
9. What’s one of the reasons for influencers’ undervaluing their creative work?
A. Invisibility of payment. B. Instability of income.
C. Pressure of assessment. D. Risks of self-employment.
10. What may cause the influencers’ stress according to paragraph 4?
A. Having to work out the order of posts to be displayed.
B. Being punished by platform staff for personal reasons.
C. Being threatened to create new content without being paid.
D. Having little control and knowledge of the platform algorithms.
11. Why does the author write this text?
A. To stress the importance of visibility in the online world.
B. To reveal relationships between platforms and influencers.
C. To explain the reasons behind children’s career preferences.
D. To show the dark side of working as an online content creator.
D
Picture a robot. What do you see? A metal machine built to last forever? Unfortunately, this very quality now threatens to drown the planet in extremely durable (持久的) e-waste. What if, instead, those machines were designed to break down and disappear — like life does? In a new study, researchers crafted a robotic arm, and a controller to operate it, from pork gelatin and plant cellulose — materials strong enough to function yet delicate enough to degrade (降解) in the soil. After testing, both structures broke down in soil within weeks.
Biodegradable robotics often falls under the umbrella of soft robotics. The field originated from materials science and chemistry rather than conventional robots that come from mechanical engineering. But a lot of early soft robots still relied on chemical materials that continue to exist as pollution.
Pingdong Wei, a materials scientist at Westlake University in Hangzhou, teamed up with his friend Zhuang Zhang, a robotics engineer now at Fudan University in Shanghai, to assemble (组装) robots for the study. They started with cellulose layers from cotton, then added glycerol for flexibility and dried the layers for strength. “Cellulose is also cheap and easy to assemble,” Wei says. To build sensors, the researchers used a conductive gelatin from pork. They then folded the layers and sensors into 3D structures.
Wei and Zhang found the controller and robotic arm stood up to both heavy use and a week of inactivity. Finally, they buried them both in a 20-centimeter-deep hole near their campus. Within eight weeks the machines were almost entirely gone.
Wei and Zhang envision robots that can handle dangerous waste and then disappear. They also propose robots that aid surgeries and then safely break down inside the body. But it’s important to note that the technology is in very early stages.
“If we truly want to have a sustainable robot that goes outside in nature,” a materials scientist Florian Hartmann says, “we also need to think of electronics or power supplies, or even batteries, that are biodegradable.”
12. What do we know about early soft robots?
A. They are made of natural materials. B. They are too delicate for heavy use.
C. They will produce e-waste pollution. D. They come from mechanical engineering.
13. Why did Wei and Zhang bury the controller and robotic arm?
A. To see if they can work in soil B. To check if they can stay inactive.
C. To test if they can break down. D. To assess if they can handle waste.
14. Which of the following best describes the robots in the new study?
A. Safe to operate. B. Easy to degrade.
C. Costly to produce. D. Complex to assemble.
15. What does Hartmann mainly talk about in the last paragraph?
A. The necessity for sustainable robots. B. The potential applications of soft robots.
C. The possibility of improving power supplies. D. The suggestions for future soft robot research.
第二节:(每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
I have had sustainable living for years. To me, one benefit of sustainable living is its impact on personal well‑being. I remember initially resisting the idea of gardening, thinking I didn’t have the time. ____16____. Digging in the dirt and tending plants transformed my weekends. I felt rewarded watching something I cared for grow and flower.
____17____. I used to be afraid of my monthly household bills until I invested in energy‑efficient appliances (电器) and started reducing water waste. It’s incredible how being mindful of consumption leads to substantial savings — not to mention the satisfaction of knowing I’m contributing to a healthier planet.
When it comes to practical tips for sustainable choices, I’ve found that starting small can lead to significant changes. For example, I began by eliminating single‑use plastic bags from my shopping routine. I still remember the first time I brought my reusable bag to the store. ____18____. And over time, it became second nature — something I did without even thinking. I have noticed how a small change can influence my mindset.
Another impactful decision I made was to set up a compost (堆肥) bin in my kitchen. At first, I was uncomfortable about the idea of sorting food leftovers, but the process proved to be a rewarding challenge. Turning waste into nutrient‑rich compost reduces landfill contributions. ____19____. How satisfying it is to see my garden grow well from something I would have otherwise thrown away!
I’ve also become a fan of mindful purchasing habits. I started asking myself if I truly need an item or if it’s just impulse (冲动) buying. ____20____: From tidying my home to investing in quality items that last longer. I have experienced a liberating feeling of not being tied to material possessions, a journey worth taking.
A. It felt good to make a stand for the environment
B. Sustainable living also brings with it cost savings
C. Maybe anxious people often mistakes it for food
D. Sustainable living helps develop a sense of responsibility
E. Gardening is a great way to connect with nature in daily life
F. Moreover, it enriches my garden by adding nutrients to the soil
G. But once I tried it, my mental clarity improved very significantly

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11.
