For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, some still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.
Lin’s eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography”. He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family weren’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was “Language Arts”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, to him it couldn’t be worse.
Then he saw it, “Cooking” sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient. It could be done alone and it was also creative.
Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts (疑惑), but he agreed. Much to his parents’ surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practiced at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.

When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him do lots of housework such as carrying out the rubbish, watering the flowers, and sending newspapers. But when he grew up, he was better off than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who had worked hard in childhood had a richer and a happier future. “Children who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said Daniel Brown, the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Brown’s study followed these children in great detail (细节). Interviews were repeated at ages of 25, 31 and 47. Under Brown, the researchers compared the children’s mental-health scores with their childhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility (责任心), independence, confidence, and competence-the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate (合作) and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently (精彩地) in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”
1.Which of the following housework did Justin Tong NOT do when he was a child?
A.Sending newspapers. B.Carrying out the rubbish.
C.Watering the flowers. D.Selling newspapers.

A.He enjoyed a happy life. B.He felt sorry for the other kids.
C.He always sold newspapers. D.He seldom collected rubbish.
3.Who will probably succeed in the future according to Paragraph 2?
A.Children who enjoy happier and richer lives.
B.Children who work in the home or community.
C.Children who take part in Daniel Brown’s study.
D.Children who feel good about people around them.
4.How did Brown follow the children in his study?
A.By giving housework and praise. B.By setting goals and showing love.
C.By interviewing and giving scores. D.By solving problems and testing them.
5.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To talk about an interesting study. B.To introduce Justin Tong’s success.
C.To tell us about childhood activities. D.To encourage children to work hard.

I think I ate at least 30 of those amazing cookies that were always available.

The Elves (精灵) and the Shoemaker
Once upon a time there was a poor shoemaker. He worked very hard, but he couldn’t earn enough money to live on. At last, all he had left was just enough leather (皮革) to make one pair of shoes.
That evening, he cut out the leather and left it on his work table. He said his prayers and went to bed. The next morning, he found a beautiful pair of shoes already made on his table. He could not believe his eyes. The shoes were perfect-not a single stitch was wrong. Soon a customer came and paid a high price for the shoes. The shoemaker used the money to buy leather for two more pairs.
That evening, he cut out the leather for two pairs and left them on the table. The next morning, both pairs were finished. Again, customers came and paid him well. Now he could buy leather for four pairs. The same thing happened again and again. Every night he cut the leather, and every morning the shoes were made.
One night, the shoemaker and his wife decided to find out who was helping them. They hid behind a curtain and waited. At midnight, two little elves came in. They were naked and had no clothes. They sat down at the work table and began to make shoes. They worked so fast-their tiny fingers flew as they cut, stitched, and hammered.
The months turned to years but his hobby never became different again.
Now Lin is an adult and runs a wonderful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.

ONLINE REVIEW: The Lucky Inn ★★★★ Lucky to have stayed at the Lucky Inn
By Posie
I wish I could live there! I went there on a ladies-only trip in July, and we were treated like queens. The staff go above and beyond. Mario at the front desk was incredible. He even upgraded our room because he knew we were all tired moms who’ve rarely got to have a trip like this. We went to the spa once for those heavenly massages. I think I ate at least 30 of those amazing cookies that were always available.

I enjoy learning it.”可知,此处询问对方对剪纸这项活动的感受或看法;英语中询问某人看法的常用句型为“How do you feel about…?”、“What do you think of…?”或“How do you like…?”,故用“How do you feel about paper cutting/What do you think of paper cutting/How do you like paper cutting”提问,与Daisy表达个人看法的答语紧密衔接。

五、任务型阅读
Read the passage and finish the tasks. (阅读短文完成下列任务)
Before sunrise, the shoes were finished, and the elves ran away.
“How can we thank them?” the shoemaker’s wife said. They helped us, but they have no clothes. Let’s make them a warm coat and a pair of trousers each.” The shoemaker agreed.
They worked hard and made beautiful clothes for the elves. That night, they left the gifts on the table instead of leather. At midnight, the elves came. They saw the clothes and put them on. One little elf turned to the other and said, “______________________________.” They danced and sang with joy. Then they ran away and never came back. But the shoemaker did not need them anymore. He had become rich and successful.
