She was the first Chinese woman to receive this great honour. But behind the prize lies a long and difficult story. In the 1960s, malaria was still a terrible problem in many parts of the world. Millions of people died from it every year, and the medicines used at that time were no longer working well. In 1969, Tu Youyou was asked to lead a team to search for a new treatment. Tu and her team turned to traditional Chinese medicine. They tested hundreds of herbs and made more than 380 extracts. At first the results were disappointing. Then Tu read an old book which said that the plant should be treated with cold water rather than boiled. That small change proved crucial. The new extract, which was later named artemisinin, worked very well. To make sure it was safe, Tu and two other members of her team took the medicine themselves before testing it on patients. It was a brave and committed decision. Tu Youyou is a modest person. She has said that the prize belongs to the whole team, not to her alone. Her story shows that great achievements often come from patience, careful observation and a willingness to try again. 26.What can we learn about Tu Youyou from the first paragraph? A.She won the Nobel Prize in Literature. B.She was the first Chinese woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. C.She received the prize at the age of forty. D.She worked alone all her life. 27.Why was a new treatment for malaria needed in the 1960s? A.Because malaria had disappeared in most countries. B.Because people refused to take any medicine. C.Because the medicines used at that time were no longer working well. D.Because no herbs could be found in China. 28.What made a difference to Tu’s team? A.Buying new machines. B.Testing on animals only. C.Working with foreigners. D.Changing how they treated the plant. 29.How did Tu and her team check that the medicine was safe? A.They took it themselves first. B.They waited for ten years. C.They used it on animals only. D.They stopped the research. 30.What is the main idea of the text? A.How to become a famous scientist. B.Tu Youyou’s discovery and the qualities behind it. C.Why traditional medicine is better than modern medicine. D.The history of malaria around the world. 五、阅读七选五 Many people wonder what makes a person of great achievement. Talent certainly helps, but it is far from enough.    31     Here are some of the qualities that such people share. First, they are curious. They keep asking why things are the way they are, and they are never satisfied with a simple answer.    32     Second, they are patient. Research often means years of work with little reward, and results may come only after many failures.    33     Third, they are brave enough to test their own ideas. Tu Youyou and her team, for example, took an untested medicine themselves.    34     Finally, they stay modest.    35     They know that any great discovery is the work of many hands, and they are always ready to learn from others. A.Without patience, many good ideas would never become real. B.So what do these people have in common? C.Such courage is what turns a clever idea into a real cure. D.This curiosity is the starting point of every discovery. E.They give credit to their team rather than take it all for themselves. F.Money is the most important thing in scientific research. G.Scientists should never talk about their work with the public. 参考答案 1.physiology 2.crucial 3.vital 4.commit 5.committed 6.academic 7.objective 8.evaluate 9.property 10.distinct 11.crucially 12.commitment 13.analysing 14.acknowledged 15.obtained 16.boiled 17.scientific 18.conclusion 19.insisted 20.discovery 21. made a discovery 22. led to 23. die from 24. graduated from 25. by chance 26.B 27.C 28.D 29.A 30.B 26.细节理解题。根据第一段“She was the first Chinese woman to receive this great honour.(她是第一位获得这一殊荣的中国女性)”可知,屠呦呦是第一位获得诺贝尔生理学或医学奖的中国女性。故选B。 27.细节理解题。根据第二段“the medicines used at that time were no longer working well.(当时使用的药物已经不再有效)”可知,20 世纪 60 年代需要新疗法的原因是原有药物失效。故选C。 28.细节理解题。根据第三段“Then Tu read an old book which said that the plant should be treated with cold water rather than boiled.(后来屠呦呦读到一本古书,书中说这种植物应当用冷水而不是煮沸的方法处理)”可知,改变处理植物的方法是关键。故选D。 29.细节理解题。根据第四段“To make sure it was safe, Tu and two other members of her team took the medicine themselves before testing it on patients.(为确保安全,屠呦呦和另外两名团队成员在给病人试用之前自己先服用了这种药)”可知,他们靠亲自试药来验证安全性。故选A。 30.主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章先讲述屠呦呦发现青蒿素的经过,最后一段又点出好奇心、耐心、勇气与谦逊等品质,故全文主旨是屠呦呦的发现及其背后的品质。故选B。 31.B 32.D 33.A 34.C 35.E 31.上文“Talent certainly helps, but it is far from enough.(天赋固然有用,但远远不够)”说明光有天赋不够,B选项“So what do these people have in common?(那么这些人有什么共同之处呢?)”承接上文,并引出下文的几条品质。故选B。 32.上文“They keep asking why things are the way they are, and they are never satisfied with a simple answer.(他们不断追问事情为何如此,而且从不满足于简单的答案)”讲的是好奇心,D选项“This curiosity is the starting point of every discovery.(这种好奇心是每一项发现的起点)”承接上文。故选D。 33.上文“Research often means years of work with little reward, and results may come only after many failures.(研究往往意味着多年付出却回报很少,成果可能要在多次失败之后才出现)”讲的是耐心,A选项“Without patience, many good ideas would never become real.(没有耐心,许多好想法永远不会成为现实)”承接上文。故选A。 34.上文“Tu Youyou and her team, for example, took an untested medicine themselves.(例如屠呦呦和她的团队亲自服用了未经检验的药物)”讲的是勇气,C选项“Such courage is what turns a clever idea into a real cure.(正是这种勇气把聪明的想法变成了真正的良药)”承接上文。故选C。 35.上文“Finally, they stay modest.(最后,他们保持谦逊)”讲的是谦逊,E选项“They give credit to their team rather than take it all for themselves.(他们把功劳归于团队,而不是全部据为己有)”承接上文,与下文“任何伟大发现都是许多人共同努力的结果”相呼应。故选E。 第1页 第1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
